Charlotte's Jane Eyre was the first to know success, while Emily's Wuthering Heights, Anne's The Tenant of Wildfell Hall and other works were later to be accepted as masterpieces of literature.

Monterey County Cattle Association Broadside

Salinas Index Print. N.D.. Broadside. Linen broadside with black text and depicts 51 cattle brands. Broadside measures 10" x 11 ¾" and is in very good condition. At one time folded twice, light soiling on verso marks where folded; three out of the four sides have minor fraying; bottom left quarter of broadside has light foxing or soiling; corners have light foxing. Broadside reads: "$200 Reward! The above reward will be paid for such information as will to the conviction of any person or persons guilty of stealing stock belonging to any of the following named members of the Monterey County Cattle Association." Underneath that statement are names of association members with their brand illustrated next to name. It was printed by Salinas Index Print, which could be related to the Salinas Weekly Index newspaper, circa 1900. The financial base in the Salinas Valley of California was, and still is, agriculture, and "mixed grain farming and stock raising prevailed in the ranches of southern Monterey County" in the late 19th century (Monterey County Historical Society). Fifty-four names of stock-raisers are printed the broadside, some prominent names of early cattle ranching families and businessmen included are Bardin, Carr, Graves and Abbott. J. D. Carr, W. B. Ford and H. Corey were recorded by the California State Board of Agricultural to have participated in the Monterey County Fair Association (1878). Not only are broadsides rarely made of linen, this piece also contains illustrated brands and documents cattle rustling in California. An unusual and handsome find. The long legacy of farming and ranching associated with Monterey County makes this broadside a valuable piece of California history. .

"(In Pr. Denis Coullaud, La mano rende meravigliosa primavera 1992). » (in Pr.

[Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Panoramic sketch of the southern anchorage, Tungyin Island, south of Shanghai, circa 1901

Graphite on artist's paper, 180 x 645 mm (sheet), folding to 180 x 215 mm, captioned and initialled at lower right 'Southern Anchorage "Tungyung" / S.P.S.'; unmounted; original fold lines and some creasing; removed from an album of sketches, watercolours and photographs compiled by S.P. Sabin, a P. & O. officer who served on various ships in the Far East between 1900 and 1908, including S.S. Oriental, S.S. Coromandel and S.S. Sobraon. In April 1901 Sabin's ship S.S. Sobraon ran aground on rocks near Tungyin Island, south of Shanghai, on its return voyage to London. It is likely that this sketch of the anchorage at Tungyin was made by Sabin on the Sobraon's outward voyage, en route from Hong Kong to Shanghai.

1900 - Juillet 1901)

Exceptional album gathering a total of 57 original photographs on albumen paper in vintage prints. These photographs were made between 1900 and 1901 by the military doctor Henry Coullaud (1872-1954).Contemporary binding in half blue percaline with corners, smooth back mute, plates of flowery paper, a red label presenting Chinese ideograms was laminated on the first board. The Chinese calligraphy on this label, as explained by Professor Denis Coullaud, is the name of the doctor: "" In Kou-Lou, the wonderful hand that makes the spring ". Thus one could translate a Chinese inscription whose characters stood out in black on the crimson background of a narrow vertical banner. It was called a "pagan". On a beautiful spring morning of the year 1900, this present was brought in great pomp, preceded by a nasal music of a clarinet, accompanied by the small sound of a small flute, and rhythmic tambourine. The Wang family, whose patriarch had been successfully operated on the cataract, thanked the physician-major Coullaud. The Chinese had translated its name by phonetic approximation, drawing the two characters "kou" and "lou". (In Pr. Denis Coullaud, The Wonderful Hand That Makes Spring , 1992).Each photograph was annotated (place and legend) by the photographer who also wrote a dedication on the back of the title page of the first album: "To my sister, loving memory of his brother Henry, Bordeaux October 25, 1901".A young military doctor weary of garrison life in the metropolis and dreaming of adventure, Henry Coullaud asked the Ministry to leave for the Chinese Campaign. His request accepted, he embarked on August 19, 1900 on the Alexander III in the 1st battalion of the Regiment of Foot infantry. The beginning of the album contains photographs of the crew of the Alexander III. Several shots then represent the stopovers made by the crew: Port-Saïd, Djibouti, Singapore and finally the harbor of Ta-Kou reached forty-two days after the departure of Marseille. This first part, concerning the actual crossing, consists essentially of port photographs and several photographs representing the Djiboutian population. It is a precious testimony to the beginning of the development of the then capital city of the French Somali Coast.A second part concerns the different Chinese cities in which Dr. Coullaud practiced: Tong-Kou, Tien-Tsin, Pao-Ting-Fou, Ting-Tcheou (Tin-Tjô), Cheng-Feng, Sou-Kiao, Si-Gnan -Shien and Tai-To. His photographs, of a raw realism, offer us a vast panorama of the life in China, at the same time of Sino-French relations but also of the urban and rural life of the natives. It includes the official activities of the French delegation: scenic tours, artistic performances organized (theater, parade acrobats or Chinese orchestra overflowing with French flags on the occasion of July 14), military journals and official photographs mixing senior dignitaries Chinese and French graduates, etc. Some clichés also depict the impartiality of the judicial machine in the midst of the Boxers' revolt: Chinese police in archaic uniform, insurgent heads exposed in cages in the public square, but also fivefold capital execution. The amateur photographer also gives pride of place to historical monuments, realizing views of cities, pagodas, towers, gates and other walls. But what seems to fascinate the young doctor above all else is the life of the street. We note several shots of women with tiny feet bandaged, a few years before the prohibition of this millennial erotic mutilation. Coullaud also immortalises the daily life of the little people, through country scenes and small trades (barbers, washing machines ...), but also those of notables and even mandarins solemn poses.Through this unique album, important testimony to ethnological value, Major Henry Coullaud gives us an overall view of Chinese life at the turn of the twentieth century.14 août 1900 - 18 septembre 1901 Album : 24x19cm, photographies : 9,5x5,8cm 1 album reliés

Through the First Antarctic Night 1898-99. A Narrative of the Voyage of the "Belgica" among Newly Discovered Lands, and Over an Unknown Sea about the South Pole

William Heinemann, London 1900 - Octavo, with colour frontispiece and three other coloured plates, 74 plates, and 21 illustrations and maps in the text; original blue cloth, ship image in white on front cover. First UK edition, first issue (with the larger lettering at base of spine); published simultaneously with and today somewhat scarcer than the New York edition, which had a different cover design. Frederick Cook joined the Belgian Antarctic Expedition as surgeon and anthropologist, in which capacity he had served on the Peary Greenland expedition, though he and Peary fell out. The expedition was caught in the ice after crossing the Antarctic circle whereupon 'Cook soon proved the most invaluable of the scientists, devising an antiscorbutic diet and observing some of the curious physical and mental effects caused by the absence of sunlight. He devised a crude form of light therapy to treat what is now commonly known as seasonal affective disorder, alleviating the condition by placing the afflicted crew members before an open fire? the extraordinary services rendered by Frederick Cook, upon whom the survival of the expedition had depended, were fully acknowledged. He received the gold medal of the Royal Geographical Society of Belgium and a knighthood from the King' (Howgego). Cook was the first to publish, beating the accounts of Gerlache and Lecointe, the expedition leaders, into print. Provenance: Private collection (Australia) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
