Sesame and Lilies with Unto this Last

London - Sisley's, 1900. London - Sisley's, 1900 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Two collections of essays and lectures of social criticism by John Ruskin. From Ruskin's Manchester lectures of 1857, his confidence as a lecturer grew, for he relished the direct contact with an audience, the opportunity to extemporize, and the persuasive effect the immediacy of his presence and delivery had. Such lectures and addresses could then be gathered up, revised, and issued in volume form, and throughout the 1860s this was his method of publication. These lectures should be read as a continuous and developing discourse, rather than as closed studies of fixed subjects. They were critiques both of contemporary culture and of the society that produced that culture -DNB. Condition: In a half calf binding. Externally, fine, just a few marks. The front hinge is slightly strained. Internally, firmly bound, generally clean and bright, with a few spots and a little browning to the first and last few pages. Overall: NEAR FINE..

        Les Caracteres de La Bruyere

Paris - Bibliotheque-Charpentier, 1900. Paris - Bibliotheque-Charpentier, 1900 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Leatherbound volume with marble paper covered boards and gilt title to the spine. The volume is in French. Jean de La Bruyre (1645 1696), was a French essayist and moralist. His Caractres appeared in 1688, and at once, as Nicolas de Malezieu had predicted, brought him bien des lecteurs et bien des ennemis (many readers and many enemies). His unpopularity was, however, chiefly confined to the subjects of his sarcastic portraiture, and to the hack writers of the time, of whom he was wont to speak with a disdain only surpassed by that of Alexander Pope. The plan of the book is thoroughly original, if that term may be accorded to a novel and skilful combination of existing elements. The treatise of Theophrastus may have furnished the first idea, but it gave little more. With the ethical generalizations and social Dutch painting of his original La Bruyre combined the peculiarities of the Montaigne Essais, of the Penses and Maximes of which Pascal and La Rochefoucauld are the masters respectively, and lastly of that peculiar 17th century product, the portrait or elaborate literary picture of the personal and mental characteristics of an individual. The result was quite unlike anything that had been before seen, and it has not been exactly reproduced since, though the essay of Addison and Steele resembles it very closely, especially in the introduction of fancy portraits. In the titles of his work, and in its extreme desultoriness, La Bruyre reminds the reader of Montaigne, but he aimed too much at sententiousness to attempt even the apparent continuity of the great essayist. The short paragraphs of which his chapters consist are made up of maxims proper, of criticisms literary and ethical, and above all of the celebrated sketches of individuals baptized with names taken from the plays and romances of the time. These last are the great feature of the work, and that which gave it its immediate if not its enduring popularity. They are wonderfully piquant, extraordinarily life-like in a certain sense, and must have given great pleasure or more frequently exquisite pain to the originals, who were in many cases unmistakable and in most recognizable. Condition: The binding is tight and firm with both covers and all pages securely attached. There is some wear to the extremities including bumping to the corners and heavy rubbing to the edges of the boards. Internally the pages are generally clean and slightly age-toned with the occasional handling mark and some pencil annotations. Overall the volume is in good condition..

South Africa and the Transvaal War

01 - London - The Caxton Publishing Co., 1900. 01 - London - The Caxton Publishing Co., 1900 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A history of South Africa and the Transvaal War (the first of the Agnlo-Boer wars). With hundreds of illustrations throughout, many of which are coloured, and numerous folding maps. With the defeat of the Zulus, and the Pedi, the Transvaal Boers were able to give voice to the growing resentment against the 1877 British annexation of the Transvaal and complained that it had been a violation of the Sand River Convention of 1852, and the Bloemfontein Convention of 1854. Major-General Sir George Pomeroy Colley, after returning briefly to India, finally took over as Governor of Natal, Transvaal, High Commissioner of SE Africa and Military Commander in July 1880. Multiple commitments prevented Colley from visiting the Transvaal where he knew many of the senior Boers. Instead he relied on reports from the Administrator, Sir Owen Lanyon, who had no understanding of the Boer mood or capability. Belatedly Lanyon asked for troop reinforcements in December 1880 but was overtaken by events. Complete in six volumes, with supplementary seventh volume (a second supplementary volume was added in 1902). Condition: In decorative redcloth bindings with gilt detailing. Externally smart, with just some light bumping. Slight cocking to one spine. Two hinges slightly strained. Internally, generally firmly bound, with just a couple of pages working loose. Pages are bright, with just the occasional handling markand patch of foxing. Small loss to endpapers of volume II. Overall: VERY GOOD..

Wilson, was a British journalist and naval historian. The Second Boer War and the earlier, much less well known, First Boer War (December 1880- March 1881) are collectively known as the Boer Wars. The Second Boer Warwas fought from 11 October 1899 until 31 May 1902 between the British Empire and the Afrikaans-speaking Dutch settlers of two independent Boer republics, the South African Republic and the Orange Free State. It ended with a British victory and the annexation of both republics by the British Empire; both would eventually be incorporated into the Union of South Africa, a dominion of the British Empire, in 1910. The conflict is commonly referred to as The Boer War but is also known as the South African War outside South Africa, the Anglo-Boer War among most South Africans.         London to Ladysmith via Pretoria

London: Longmans, Green, & Co., 1900. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. Near fine. This is a collector-grade copy of the British first edition, first printing of Churchill's fourth published book. London to Ladysmith via Pretoria is the first of Churchill's two books based on his newspaper despatches sent from the front in South Africa. In October 1899, the second Boer War erupted between the descendants of Dutch settlers in South Africa and the British. Churchill, an adventure-seeking young cavalry officer and war correspondent, swiftly found himself in South Africa with the 21st Lancers and an assignment as press correspondent to the Morning Post. Not long thereafter, on 18 November 1899, Churchill was captured during a Boer ambush of an armored train. His daring escape less than a month later made him a celebrity and helped launch his political career. London to Ladysmith via Pretoria contains 27 letters and telegrams to the Morning Post written between 26 October 1899 and 10 March 1900. It was published in England in mid-May 1900 and sold well. Churchill returned from South Africa in July 1900 and spent the summer campaigning hard in Oldham, where he won his first seat in Parliament on 1 October 1900 in the so-called "khaki election". The British first edition is striking, bound in tan cloth with an illustration of an armoured train on the front cover accompanied by the author's facsimile signature and with the Union flag and Transvaal flag in gilt on the spine beneath a red subtitle. The binding is visually arresting, but the first edition proved notoriously fragile and prone to wear, soiling, and spotting. This first edition, first printing copy is a near fine, collector-worthy example, quite scare thus. The khaki cloth binding is square, tight, and remarkably clean and bright for the edition. The illustrated front cover - the signal feature of the edition - is the cleanest and brightest we have seen in a number of years. Spine presentation is very nearly as good. The spine remains nicely rounded with bright gilt and red subtitle. Only the foot of the spine is slightly soiled, with some dulling of the publisher's name. The blank rear cover is nearly as clean as the front cover. Wear is trivial, confined to tiny corner bumps and trivial wrinkling at the spine ends. The contents suit the binding, remaining unusually crisp and bright. The book feels unread. The sole previous ownership mark is a neatly and compactly inked five line previous owner inscription on the upper right first free endpaper - notably in Dutch but inscribed in "London" - and dated "Juli. 1900." (July, two months after publication). The original black endpapers are intact with only a .75 inch cosmetic crack to the paper at the lower front gutter. All maps and plans are intact, including the notoriously fragile folding maps which remain properly folded. Light spotting appears almost entirely limited to the page edges. This copy is accompanied by a red full goatskin clamshell preservation case with rounded spine, raised bands, and gilt stamping.         Sankt Peterburg – Transvaal’: Izdanie Gollandskogo Komiteta dlia Okazania Pomoshchi Ranenym Buram [St. Petersburg – Transvaal: Publication of the Dutch Committee for the Relief of the Wounded Boers]

St. Petersburg: Ispolneno v Khudozhestvennoi Fototipii i Tsinkografii A. I. Vil'borg, 1900. St. Petersburg: Ispolneno v Khudozhestvennoi Fototipii i Tsinkografii A. I. Vil'borg, 1900. Quarto (32 x 23.5 cm). Original string-bound pictorial wrappers; [34] leaves on coated stock, preceded by tissue guards, many of them printed. Numerous color lithographs, as well as photographs in unusual configurations, with ornamental floral frames in the Jugendstil manner. Signed and inscribed to Charles Richard Crane on the front fly leaf in the year of publication. Wrappers discolored and lightly chipped, with a larger (2 x 2 cm) loss to lower right corner of front wrapper (and two first pages); a few tissue guards slightly displaced and creased along edges; internally very good, save for smudge to margins of one page. Given the fragile string binding, rarely encountered in such good condition. This lavishly illustrated album, which reflects some of Russia's greatest cultural achievements around 1900, was published for a fundraising campaign to establish field hospitals in the Transvaal during the Boer War between the Transvaal Republic and the British Empire (1899-1902). The album features lithograph reproductions of works by Sergei Solomko (who illustrated the front wrapper), Ilya Repin, Nikolai Roerich, and Vladimir Makovsky, among many others. Also contains portraits of leading actors and musicians, with captions and small messages of support printed on the tissue guards, by contemporary intellectual and political figures such as Dmitry Mendeleev, Anatolii Koni, Andrei Beketov, Cesar Kui, and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. The movement in support of the Boers was unsurpassed in its scope and in the organizational prowess of its leader, the minister of the Dutch Reformed community of St. Petersburg, Hendrik Gillot, whose appeal to the Russian people is reproduced within. This copy belonged to the famous American industrialist and slavophile Charles Richard Crane, almost undoubtedly America’s most important early slavophile. His engagement with Russian and Slavic culture still resounds today in the established Russian studies programs of America’s leading universities and the Slavic collections of many American libraries. An early investor in Russian industry, Crane was also responsible for significant cultural exchange in the fin-de-siecle, bringing artists and intellectuals such as Vasilii Vereshchagin and Pavel Miliukov to America for the first time, as well as acting as patron for an entire generation of important artists, intellectuals, and politicians in Eastern Europe. He was the financial impetus behind Alfons Mucha’s famed Slav Epic, as well as a financial backer of the early Czechoslovak Republic. After the collapse of Tsarist Russia, Crane helped rescue numerous Russian cultural monuments from destruction at the hands of the Soviet Regime. He was responsible for the purchase and transportation of the famous Danilov bells from their home in the Danilov Monastery, then threatened with destruction, to the bell tower of Lowell House at Harvard University in 1931. Inscribed to Crane by Russian jurist and politician Nikolai Reitlinger (Chicago, November 1900), in English and Russian (a language Crane studied, but never mastered). KVK, OCLC show only two copies, at the LOC and the University of Miami.

Signed photographs of Forster and his friends

, [c.1900-c.1950]. [c.1900-c.1950]. Six original photographic prints and a photographic postcard (sizes ranging from 85×56mm to 178×130mm). Two photographs slightly creased at the corners, one with a small closed tear to top edge, and the earliest photograph very slightly discoloured, but all generally in very good condition. A cache of original photographs showing E. M. Forster throughout his adult life, three captioned on the rear in Forster's hand, likely from his own collection. The first shows Forster the moustacheless youth in his Cambridge rooms, an original print of the much-reproduced picture of him reading intently with a print of the Apollo Belvedere hanging on the wall above him. Rob Doll, in a 2002 essay entitled "E. M. Forster's The Longest Journey: An Interpretation", has a compelling gloss for the picture: "Forster sits reading a book, with his back to the picture of the beautiful young Apollo, chaste god of poetry. The scene emblemizes Forster's sexual situation at that time; his homosexual feelings found an outlet only in art and literature, through knowledge, that is, rather than through participation. For a long time Forster would settle for such a secondary expression of passion, for the image rather than the reality." (Website: "Pharos: E. M. Forster", access 31/07/13) Certainly the reading adds resonance to Forster's own copy of this image. Two photographs show Forster as friend to Auden and Isherwood: one captioned photograph depicts Forster on a sunny beach in Ostende, Belgium, in the 1930s, overdressed for the beach in hat, trousers, suit and cardigan, lounging in conversation with Isherwood and "[?]Merin" wearing only swimming trunks; the other a photographic postcard (produced by Holiday Snaps of Margate), also captioned, shows Forster and Auden walking together in Dover in 1937; the letter from Isherwood on the reverse reads: "All well here. We had a nice bathe today, including Bob, whose throat is much better. Ted is learning to swim. The weather has been splendid. Wystan leaves tomorrow; but Oliver now is coming. The play is practically finished. Love from us both and please remember us to your mother. C." The play Isherwood mentions may be his and Auden's "On the Frontier: a melodrama in three acts" (Faber, 1938). One particularly interesting photograph shows Forster in Bombay conversing with three figures, one a lady captioned by Forster as Sophia Wadia (influential theosophist and wife of labour activist B. P. Wadia) to whom the others are listening intently, and another an elderly man captioned by Forster as Abbas Tyabji, the famous freedom-fighter known by Gandhi as "The Grand Old Man of Gujarat". Forster has dated the photograph to 1945, though it is likely that he meant 1935 since Tyabji died in 1936. Two solo portraits show Forster in middle-age, the one jovial and apparently on holiday, the other somewhat older and desolate in expression, captioned by Forster as being at West Hackhurst, his mother's house, where he lived from 1925 until his mother's death in 1945. The last is a photograph of Forster the balding gentleman in his hat and coat.
