        Characters of romance.

London, William Heinemann 1900.. Folio (19 1/2 x 15 1/2 inches).. Title and [16] coloured plates loose in publishers orig.-clothportfolio.. Campbell 97. - First edition. - Considered to be Nicholson's most important work. - "Nicholson's designs for Characters of Romance were probably finished by July 1900. A single edition of lithographic reproductions of the drawings was published in October 1900. These sixteen illustrations, each of which has its title inscribed within the border, are as follows: Miss Havisham (from Dickens' Great Expectations), Mr Weller (from Dickens' The Pickwick Papers), Don Quixote de la Mancha (Cervantes' Don Quixote), John Silver ((R.L. Stevenson's Treasure Island), Rochester (Charlotte BrontA"'s Jane Eyre), Sophia Western (Fielding's Tom Jones), Porthos (Alexandre Dumas' The Three Musketeers), Chicot (Dumas's Les Quarante Cinq), Baron Munchausen [sic] (Rudolph Erich Raspe's Baron Münchausen), Miss Fotheringay and Captain Costigan (Thakeray's Pendennis), Madge Wildfire (Sir Walter Scott's The Heart of Midlothian), Mulvaney (Rudyard Kipling's Soldiers Three), Jorrocks (R.S. Surtees' Handley Cross), Gargantua (Rabelais' Gargantua), Mr Vanslyperken (Captain Marryat's The Dog Fiend) and Commodore Trunnion (Tobias Smollett's Peregrine Pickle). The titles given above are the titles given in the publication's list of contents which occasionally differ slightly from the titles inscribed on the plates" (Campbell). - "Nicholson's woodcuts were reproduced by lithography except for a few portfolios printed directly from the original blocks and hand coloured. Each has a heavy bordery. Nicholson was known as the man who puts a thick black line round everything and within this border is a striking design, usually a single figure, made up of contrasting masses of black and one or more colors. The decorative appeal of these woodcuts was immediate and lasting" (Ray, The Illustrator and the Book in England, p. 178). - Portfolio slightly rubbed and less stained, the plates clean and very fine.

Eigenh. Brief mit U. ("Th. Herzl").

[Wien], 9. IV. 1900.. 1 S. 8vo. All the gifts and possibilities of the adult woman are already evident in [Gretel]. And it is her peculiar charm that she never knows nor suspects the existence of what is already awake in her. In her glance you read all the measure of intelligence that one needs for life, for, fortunately for her, she does not know what life is ... She lacks only knowledge, experience, destiny; otherwise she is a complete human being" (zit. n. A. Chouraqui, A Man Alone: The Life of Theodor Herzl, S. 168). - Unveröffentlicht.

YUKON GOLD RUSH - ALs from Taylor to C. M. Lockwood, Salem, OR. July 9, 1900.

Nome, AK: 1900. 4 filled sheets of lined paper [25 lines per page], with the first three with penciled text written recto only. The 4th also with 7 lines written on verso, Taylor's signature underneath. Letter accompanied by addressed & stamped envelope, postmarked. Taylor left Oregon for Nome to establish a Post office... from Enroute [Vol 7, Issue 3], Nancy Pope tells us: "On June 21, 1900, John P. Clum, Alaska Territorial postal inspector, appointed Fred Lockley, Jr. and Ben Taylor as postal clerks in Nome, a city that had barely existed the year before." In this letter, less than a month after being appointed to this service, Taylor describes this wild gold-fever environment to his Salem colleague: Saloons are thick. One place has 15 in one row all side by side they run open as a grocery store at home and are full of every gambling game you can think of. Women go in just the same as men just like saloons at fair time. Every one has music of some kind. Some have dance halls. You dance with a girl then they take her up to the bar and treat costs 50 cents and that is the way it goes on that line. To try to describe it proper would be impossible. Ever since I been here you could count 50 ships in the harbor any day and they are coming and going every day. When we landed on the beach there was the worst jam you ever saw. Freight piled 10 feet high as far as you can see millions of dollars laying on the beach in everything you can think of, and everyone trying to get their stuff first, and only 4 or 5 feet from the water and that space filled with wagons and dog teams, men with carts and any old thing you could ask for. I wish you could see the power plants on the beach they are stretched out for miles up and down the beach. Steam, gasoline, coal, oil, windmills etc... .I wish you could see them and all the different kinds of machines for saving gold. Everyone has a different idea. And talk about your boat building, the people are making thousands of them to go to the different streams prospecting and mining. Tents on the beach are as thick as they can stick for 20 miles most all camped on the sand from 20 to 60 feet from the water. This town is a mushroom town, sprang from 5 thousand to 30000 in a week or two, such a jam on the street you can hardly push yourself along sometimes. The streets is so narrow in some places I can step across the street from side walk to side walk in two steps hardly as wide as out alleys at home. I have seen one team block the whole street. A drunk man can lay down on the side walk or in the street and sleep all day people walk around him and never bother him atall. ... I could write for a week if I had the time to spare but will tell you all when I get home... .I am making from 5 to 7 dollars a day now working in the Post Office. Am going mining in a few days... . A wonderful first-hand account of life in Nome, during the heyday of the Yukon Gold Rush. "Received / Jul 23 1900 / C. M. Lockwood" red stamp to top of ALs p. 1. ALs & envelope with 'pin' holes to top left, otherwise, both in VG condition.

Writing Folio (or Blotter) Promotion with Chinese-style Faux Lacquer (Faux Mother-of-Pearl and Paper Mache Boards), Produced by F. Hoffmann-La Roche & Cie.

Paris - Handsome folder promoting opium as a pharmaceutical! N.d., circa 1900 to 1910. 30 by 23 cm. Tabularly-presented text is on the endpapers, with four leaves of heavy blank yellow paper bound in by string. On the two page table of particular interest, in our view, is the drug called "Pantopon 'Roche'" whose composition is "Opium Total". Other drugs, we note, contain "barbiturate." The opium-connection might explain the Chinoiserie decoration of the binder. Of course, the boards are also very decorative, making this binder a prized promotional giveaway, which we assume it would have been to the company's customers and other contacts. The Basel-based Hoffmann La Roche was founded in 1896 and soon had offices in Paris. It remains to this day a pharmaceutical giant. Minor surface loss to the black faux lacquer surface along the edges. Ink and pencil marks abounding on the yellow blanks, suggesting these were used as blotter paper. Minor loss and looseness to the endpaper at the spine.

Pre-dates the UK publication. Author's only novel, having just published a short seafaring tale 'Man Overboard' in Harmsworth's Magazine (1899).         Savrola

London, Longmans, Green & Co.,, 1900. A Tale of the Revolution in Laurania. Octavo, contemporary black cloth rebind, title gilt to the spine. Bookplate of Culcheth Sunday School Circulating Library to the front pastedown, occasional blind stamps to the text. A little rubbed, somewhat cocked, endpapers browned, marginal browning else, a sound copy. First UK edition. This novel represents the author's only attempt at full-length fiction, a melodramatic tale of a liberal revolution in an autocratic Mediterranean state: the hero, Savrola, was a compound of himself and Lord Randolph. An interesting choice for a Sunday School library. The UK edition was delayed by the serialization of the story in Macmillan's Magazine between May and December 1899, so the US issue of November 1899 was actually published first.

Photo Album - Japan in Transformation - Meiji Era - Mie Prefecture

Mie, Japan, 1900. Mie Prefecture, Japan, circa 1895-1925. Original Photograph Album from the progressive Meiji period, mainly centered in Mie-Ken, which illustrates an era characterized by modernization, including the integration of females in educational institutions as well as the work force, Western influence in medicine, rural development, and dress. Contains 116 photographs, albumens and silver print gelatins, mounted recto and verso onto black cardstock leaves, a scant few with embedded captions in Japanese. Oblong folio string-tied album made in Asia and measuring approximately 37 x 28 cm, black cloth boards with embossed motif to front. Photographs vary in size, the smallest measuring approximately 3,5 x 5,5 cm, and the largest 27 x 21 cm. Occasional fading or creasing, otherwise in Very Good Condition, a rare compilation of images. The Meiji era was a time of rapid change, extending from 8 September 1868 through 30 July 1912, and represents the first half of the Empire of Japan, during which Emperor Meiji-Tenno led Japanese society from being an isolated, pre-industrial, feudal society, to a modernized nation. Fundamental changes affected its social and political structure, economy, military, and foreign relations. Industrialization was accelerated such that it rose as an imposing military power by the year 1905. Japan's samurai increased to 1.9 million, each being paid fixed stipends. The military was augmented with nationwide conscription and a mandatory four year service term by every male. The Japanese Land Tax Reform of 1873, or chisokaisei, instituting for the first time, the right of private land ownership. Rapid growth was also seen in industrialization, resulting in improved infrastructure and modern communications, the developement of shipyards, iron smelters, spinning mills, and a railway system, increased production, international trade, and consequently, massive migration to industrializing centers from the countryside. Education, military, medicine, and improved infrastructure are the highlights of this album, which, congruent with the period, illustrate the larger story of an industrious transformation for Japan, with overtones of Western influence integrating into indigenous tradition. The compiler of the album is unidentified but was conceivably a leader in children and adult education, and also an advocate of feminism in Japan. Captioned photos from 1907 to 1920 are taken of various graduating 6th grade classes (the highest level before college or university studies). At least two of the latter are taken at Takenogun. A photograph of a large formal gathering is captioned "Shimazu Women's Meeting Place, October 1902" [translation from Japanese]. Nurses also pose in group photographs. Perhaps most fascinating views are the glimpses into medical science, with one particularly striking image of nine male medical students dissecting human cadavres under the guidance of two surgeons or anatomists. Being early in the learning and implementation of Western chirurgery, one cannot help but notice the conditions which would also provide excellent opportunity for studing bacterial infection. The latter is a very rare and large photograph measuring 26 x 21 cm. In one of the school graduate photographs, a male teacher appears to be blind, evidently having had surgery to sew his eyes closed, and having healed from burn wounds on his jaw and neck. [Prior to the arrival of German physician Philipp Franz von Siebold in 1823, ancient Chinese medicine had been predominant in Japan. Only in the Dutch settlement of Dejima in Nagasaki, where he was posted as resident physician and scientist, were Japanese able to learn about Western culture and Western medicine. Through medical education and services provided, Philipp Franz von Siebold introduced Western surgery. Finally in 1854, when Emperor Meiji opened his nation to the world, several German physicians were invited to provide medical education in Japan. Physician Keiko Okami was the first Japanese woman to obtain a degree in Western medicine, first being an English school teeacher in Japan, then graduating from Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1889. The German medical education system continued until about 1950.] A recent newspaper article announces a philanthropist gesture in Mie-ken, by local physician Dr. Kotani, who constructed a children's amusement park on an unused parcel of land. This is accompanied by a caricature sketch and small portrait photograph of him. Illustrating further advancement in medicine, and simultaneously in women's recognition and rights, some early photographs show Japanese nurses using their instruments and making patient notes, with a doctor in the room. Their uniforms are those of St. Luke's Hospital which was founded in Tokyo in 1891. We also find a group of eight graduate nurses. And, a group of men poses in front of the maternity ward of Hamada Hospital, as per the caption. [The Kyoto Nursing School was founded in 1886, although nursing would not become an officially established part of Japan's health care system in 1899 with the Midwives Ordinance. The Registered Nurse Ordinance was passed in 1915, legally substantiating registered nurses in Japan. In 1927 St. Luke's College of Nursing became the first college of its type established in Japan, and finally in 1952 Japan established its first nursing university. The foundation for the Imperial Japanese Army's Medical Department was laid earlier however, when in 1870 thirteen students were sent to Germany to study western medicine. By 1877, a medical school staffed with German professors was opened at the Imperial University. Although advanced knowledge by the beginning of the Second World War, the Imperial Army unfortunately maintained the medical system it had during the Russo-Japanese War, and consequently suffered more deaths from disease than necessary.] A photograph captioned and dated 15 June 1924 captures a large number of male labourers who were in the process of building irrigation canals, or yosui, while another taken on the same day, is captioned "Miyogi Co. or Miyagi Co." [The Meiji Irrigation Canal was a economically significant irrigations works project which opened its first channel in 1880 and continued being built into the 1930s, as part of Japan's great modernization strategy. It especially transformed Anjo from a barren land into a model of modern agriculture.] Other images are of men serving in the Japanese military, some of whom may have fought in the Russo-Japanese War in 1904-1905, men in traditional samurai and martial arts costume, one of whom resembles Morihei Ueshiba. Changes in clothing are demonstrated throughout the album, with women in the kimono with geta footwear and sandals, men and women donning tabi socks, elders in traditional robes, while in contrast western styles appear mainly with men in business suits and western shoes, and young men in formal university uniform. Mie-Kei (Mie Prefecture), Kansai region, Honshu, Japan: Mie is known for its ancient Ise Shrine, an important Shinto shrine complex known as Jingu, one of the religious order's holiest and most important sites, and a popular pilgrimage site. During the Edo period or Tokugawa period, the area now known as Mie Prefecture consisted of several feudal domains, each ruled by an appointed lord, within four dividsions - the Ise Province, Shima Province, Iga Province and part of Kii Province. During the Meiji Restoration, the former provinces were reorganized on several occasions, including the seat of leadership. The Mie Prefecture took its present-day form in 1876, when it merged with its southern neighbor.. Very Good.

Album of photographs of the scenery and people of Norfolk Island in the South Pacific Ocean

Norfolk Island 1900 - (13 1/2 x 10 1/2 inches). 42 carbon prints on 42 cream card album leaves, each mounted within ruled frame with printed caption below, the photographs measuring approximately 6x8 inches. Contemporary red morocco, upper cover titled in gilt within a gilt border, marbled endpapers, gilt edges Provenance: Hon. B.R. Wise, Attorney General (lettered in gilt on upper cover) Early photographs of a remote Pacific Island. Norfolk Island, a largely autocratic dependency of Australia, was first sighted by Captain James Cook on his second voyage and settled by the First Fleet in 1788. For the first half century of the 19th century, the island was largely used as a penal colony, with many of the worst offenders transferred from Australia to the remote island. In the 1850s, after use of the island as a penal colony was abandoned, the island was settled by the Pitcairn Island descendents of the Bligh mutineers. In the 1860s, the Anglican church established a large Melanesian mission on the island. The present images, by an unknown but likely Australian photographer, comprise views of Kingston, various lagoons and bays, landscape scenes featuring the island's iconic pine tree and other vegetation, images at the Melanesian Mission and group portraits of the island's inhabitants (presumably including Bligh mutineer descendents). The original owner of this album was Bernhard Ringrose Wise (1858-1916), whose name appears on the upper cover; Wise served as the Attorney General of Australia from 1899-1904.
