        Autograph Letter Signed ("R. Koch").

Berlin, December 4, 1900 - 2 1/2 pp recto and verso, 8vo (conjoined leaves). On stationery of The Royal Institute for Infectious Diseases, large tear from second leaf affecting a portion of text, some tape repair and a small hole to first leaf. In the present letter Koch excuses himself from a lecture invitation on the grounds that he is 1) too busy catching up after his return (from the tropics), 2) that he was been away too long from the society to know the group, and 3) that he will still be engaged in malaria research at that date. "The pace of travel and discovery was frenetic. After having spent only nine months in Germany over a period of four years Koch returned to Berlin in October 1900. By that time, Pasteur, Koch and their disciple microbe hunters, seeking salvation for humankind and perhaps a little glory for themselves, had in the space of just over two decades identified 21 germs that cause disease. 'As soon as the right method was found, discoveries came as easily as ripe apples from a tree,' Koch said. And it was Robert Koch who had developed those methods." (Persson Smallpox, Syphilis and Salvation, 2010, p 90). WITH: Cabinet card woodburytype portrait of Robert Koch, light spotting to mount.

THE QUEEN OF THE WORLD OR UNDER THE TYRANNY.

London: Lawrence and Bullen, Ltd., 1900 - Octavo, pp. [i-v] vi [vii] viii [1] 2-293 [294: printer's imprint] + 24- page publisher's catalogue dated "Spring Season, 1899" inserted at rear, original red cloth, front and spine panels stamped in gold, edges untrimmed. First edition. A science fiction novel in which the protagonist, Gerald Pierce de Lacy, is sent three hundred years into the future by occult means. The world of 2174 is an authoritarian dystopia ruled by the Chinese who possess weapons of mass destruction (including something that might be a disintegrating ray) and a huge fleet of flap- winged airships of great speed and power. The Chinese empire is attacked by rebel forces based in Antarctica, the hidden headquarters of their leader, England's King Arthur. The insurgents are soundly defeated and the king is killed in a battle fought with fantastic weapons. "Yet this nominal victory for the Chinese marks the beginning of the downfall of their empire, for the rest of the world rises in rebellion. The English fleet destroys the Chinese capital, and eventually the empire falls . [Lenore, King Alfred's daughter becomes] Queen of England, or, as the book title has it, Queen of the World. De Lacy would be Lenore's consort, but he is snatched back to the nineteenth century . A curious work. Similar to the work of George Griffith, but superior in many ways. It is hack work done by a good writer who has dashed off a thriller hastily without worrying about loose ends, inconsistencies, or clarity." - Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 1607. Clarke, Tale of the Future (1978), p. 26. Clarke, Voices Prophesying War: Future Wars 1763-3749, p. 231. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 165. Negley, Utopian Literature: A Bibliography 859. Sargent, British and American Utopian Literature, 1516- 1985, pp. 122-23. Suvin, Victorian Science Fiction in the UK, p. 80. Bleiler (1978), p. 147. Reginald 10627. Offsetting to free endpapers with the upper right corner of the front free endpaper clipped, former owner's label pasted to front free endpaper (dated 1899), corners a little soft, spine a little faded, mild soiling to edges, a very good or somewhat better copy. A scarce book. (#139159) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Ian Hamilton's March

London: Longmans, Green, & Co., 1900. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is the British first edition, first printing, first issue of Churchill's fifth published book. Ian Hamilton's March was the second of Churchill's two books based on his newspaper despatches sent from the front in South Africa during the Boer War. In October 1899, the second Boer War erupted between the descendants of Dutch settlers in South Africa and the British. Churchill, an adventure-seeking young cavalry officer and war correspondent, swiftly found himself in South Africa with the 21st Lancers and an assignment as press correspondent to the Morning Post. Not long thereafter, on 15 November 1899, Churchill was captured during a Boer ambush of an armored train. His daring escape less than a month later rendered him a celebrity and helped launch his political career. Churchill's first book of Boer War despatches, London to Ladysmith via Pretoria was published in England in mid-May 1900 and sold well. Ian Hamilton's March completes Churchill's coverage of the Boer War, publishing 17 letters to the Morning Post, spanning 31 March through 14 June 1900. The narrative in Ian Hamilton's March includes the liberation of the Pretoria prison camp where Churchill had been held. Though a companion and sequel to London to Ladysmith, it is notably different in appearance, content, and scarcity. The first printing saw only 5,000 copies - half as many copies as London to Ladysmith. Where Ladysmith bore a lavishly illustrated binding, Ian Hamilton's March was bound in red cloth matching the style of Churchill's first published book, The Story of the Malakand Field Force - fitting, as these were the first and last Churchill first editions published by Longmans, Green, and Co. While London to Ladysmith via Pretoria had swiftly published Churchill's dispatches in the wake of his capture and escape, for Ian Hamilton's March "the texts of the originally published letters were more extensively revised and four letters were included which had never appeared in periodical form" (Cohen, A8.1.a, Vol. I, p.105). Churchill effected these revisions while on board the passenger and cargo steamer Dunottar Castle, which was requisitioned as a troop ship, en route home to England. Arriving home from South Africa in July 1900, Churchill spent the summer campaigning hard in Oldham, where he won his first seat in Parliament on 1 October 1900 in the so-called "khaki election". This British first edition of Ian Hamilton's March was published just a few weeks later. This first edition, first printing is in very good condition. The binding remains tight with none of the hinge fraying that we commonly see, and only slight wear, confined to extremities. The spine is a little dulled and soiled, but, as with the binding as a whole, better than we normally find. The contents remain quite bright with a crisp feel. All maps and plans are intact, as is the original frontispiece and tissue guard, as well as the original black endpapers. Light spotting appears confined to the prelims and page edges. A tiny Hawick bookseller sticker is affixed to the lower front pastedown. Previous ownership marks are otherwise confined to the front free endpaper verso and the facing recto as follows: a pencil name, address, and date of "10th Oct 1900" (notably, the day of publication), a different name and Hawick address (same city as the bookseller sticker), and finally a more recent owner bookplate.         Through the First Antarctic Night 1898–1899. A Narrative of the Voyage of the "Belgica" among Newly Discovered Lands and over an Unknown Sea about the South Pole.

London: William Heinemann, 1900 - Octavo. Original pale blue cloth, gilt lettered spine, lettered and with pictorial block in white on front cover, Spine rolled and lightly sunned. An excellent copy. Coloured frontispiece, 3 other coloured plates, 74 half-tone plates and numerous illustrations to the text. First edition. Cook had previously travelled as surgeon and anthropologist on Peary's second expedition to Greenland - and had fallen out with the leader over his treatment of the Inuit and his subordinates - when he joined the Belgian Antarctic Expedition in a similar capacity. When the expedition became trapped in the ice after crossing the Antarctic Circle, "Cook soon proved the most invaluable of the scientists, devising an antiscorbutic diet and observing some of the curious physical and mental effects caused by the absence of sunlight. He devised a crude form of light therapy to treat what is now commonly known as seasonal affective disorder, alleviating the condition by placing the afflicted crew members before an open fire" (Howgego). Having previously disagreed with Peary on the subject of publications, Cook pre-empted the official report by publishing an account in the New York Herald in 1899, followed by the present work in 1900. Amundsen, who served on the Expedition as first mate, contributes Appendix V, "The Navigation of the Antarctic Ice-Pack", and further distinguished himself by becoming the first person to ski on Antarctica. Howgego C24; Spence 311.

The Masterpieces of George Sand: Amandine Lucille Aurore Dupin, Baroness Dudevant

Philadelphia: George Barrie & Son, [1900] Complete 20-volume set. Translation by George Burnham Ives. 8vo. Half brown calf with compartments and gilt letterng and decorations and tan decorated paper over boards. Various paginations. Top edge gilt. Frontispiece with captioned tissue guards, full-page illustrations with captioned tissue guards, decorative tan endpapers. Very good overall. Bit of occasional edgewear only. A tight, quite handsome custom bound full set of the "Edition de Nohant," with colophon noting the limitation to 1000 numbered sets (this #83) and this set printed for Charles N. Mann (likely the Philadelphia antiquarian and book collector,1840-1912). Though not so marked, this set hails from the library of Adlai E. Stevenson III, Illinois senator, and before him the library of his father, Adlai E. Stevenson II (1900-65), Illinois governor and twice presidential candidate -- whose wife Ellen Borden (1907-72) likely acquired it, she being the family member who read and collected fine literature and poetry. Uncommon set, nice condition, unusual provenance.

Neudamm, Germany: J. Neumann, 1900-1921. First edition.. Small bumps to two outer corners only and a very faint crease to the cloth along the upper edge of volume 2, the lime green cloth is very bright and clean as is the text and all color plates; a tight copy in almost fine condition.. Pp. (xiv), (240), (iv); (xiii), (240), (iv); (vii), (232) with 176 fine chromolithographic plates (4 are double-page), all finished by hand-coloring and based on the original watercolor paintings by Toni Gurke, wife of the author, M. Gurke. Publisher's original lime green cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt and with blind-stamped gilt-decorations on the front covers, all original tissue guards present, sm folio (12 3/4 x 10 inches). A comprehensive review of nearly two hundred flowering cactus species. Many cactus species represented are from Central and South America. This work is exceedingly rare and is often found in an incomplete state - the set offered here is complete and in the original publisher's binding.
