ETATS - UNIS. EXPOSITION UNIVERSELLE 1900 PARIS....

Coventry: Stevengraph Works, [1900]. A stunning silver & black weave. Image: 10" x 8-1/2". Overall: 11-3/4" x 10". No manufacturer's mount. In the mid-19th C, the town of Coventry, England, was the centre of a ribbon weaving industry. Thomas Stevens, a local weaver, adapted Jacquard looms to weave colourful pictures from silk. By 1862, Stevens could produce four different designs. Business boomed and Stevens acquired two larger factories; by 1875 he was calling his product the "Stevengraph", named after himself. He exhibited internationally in America, France & Holland, winning some 30 medals & diplomas. In 1878 Stevens moved to London and began to mount his Stevengraphs as framed pictures - by the late 1880s Stevens had over 900 different designs. [Wiki]. This Stevengraph [by Stevens?] celebrates the 1900 Paris World Fair, depicting the US Pavilion, which was designed by Charles Coolidge. This an unusually large size Stevengraph, much larger than the bookmark format [et al] usually seen. Not in LeVan Baker catalogue, nor found in Godden's work, Stevengraphs and Other Victorian Silk Pictures. Tape (?) discolorations at cloth margins, in one spot [top center] just touching the outer edge of the primary image, otherwise confined to margins....

        The Shadow of Quong Lung

      J. B. Lippincott Co. Philadelphia 1900 - First Edition. Octavo, original G. L. H. illustrated cloth and dustjacket. Rare Hubin listed mystery, "A 'yellow peril' novel chronicling the evil career of the sadistic and powerful Quong Lung in San Francisco's Chinatown underworld. Portions of the book originally appeared in 1897 and 1898 as prize-winning short stories in the San Francisco Examiner and the Argonaut. Quong Lung's pastimes include extortion, kidnapping, subversion of the Chinese Exclusion Act, slavery, prostitution, revenge, and murder. Late in the book, it is revealed that Quong Lung is Yale-educated. Coincidence? Although many Chinese characters are portrayed sympathetically as innocent victims, insight into the author's point of view can be found in a brief but telling preface: 'This book does not set forth to be that detestable thing, a 'book with a purpose'; but if it should incidentally draw attention to the terrible conditions of life of the slave girls in Chinatown, and if any amelioration of those conditions should ensue, I shall feel that I have not written in vain ? Of course, the best thing to do with Chinatown would be to burn it down; but the scheme is too Utopian to be discussed in a mere preface.'" Very Good, surface wear to cover image, in Good dustjacket, white cloth tape at verso of top and lower spine ends, lower rear panel chipped a centimeter deep along edge, top front panel with few inches of loss.         WITH OUR SOLDIERS AT THE FRONT OR CONFLICT AND VICTORY IN SOUTH AFRICA

London: Religious Tract Society, [c. 1900].. Thick octavo. Pictorial blue cloth, lettered in gilt. Well-read and worked over, but generally sound (see below). A copy of the 6th impression of this detailed account to date of the South African War (i.e. Second Boer War), with the bookplate of Lt. Col. George Blakemore Robbins (1850-1920) of the 91st Highlanders. Robbins served from 1872-1890, including service in the Zulu War of 1879, the battle of Gingindlovu, the relief of Ekowe, and subsequent operations. His continued interest in the following years of the South African wars is amply demonstrated by his remarkable attention to this copy of Johnson's book. Leaving aside the occasionally quite substantive and interesting annotations in the actual text, this copy has been inflated to substantial extra bulk by the insertion of photographs (with at least two of them original prints), illustrations, and periodical and press clippings; six original manuscript maps of battles and battlefields in ink and colored pencil, five of them folding; manuscript rosters of command at various battles, as well as occasionally of casualties, and of the body-count of the enemy; manuscript transcriptions of documents, telegrams and dispatches; and a variety of other such material. A three page manuscript chronology of principle events and battles is inserted in front, as well as a manuscript key to references to specific battles in the text. Manuscript insertions in the "List of Illustrations" barely begin to account for the added material. Due to the bulk of the insertions, several gatherings and leaves are loose, but remain in place. A unique record of Robbins's passionate interest in the events following his own service in the region.

An original watercolour painting - possibly of a sparsely settled Adelaide seaside suburb - unsigned, but the artist is identified on the verso as H.P. Gill

      - The watercolour is on paper (135 x 227 mm), unmounted as produced; apart from a tiny light crease to one top corner, it is in fine condition. It is undated, but probably circa 1900. Harry Pelling Gill (1855-1916), art curator and teacher, was born in England; he trained and taught at the Royal College of Art from 1877-82. He was then appointed master of the school of design in Adelaide. 'He arrived in Adelaide in September and organized elementary and advanced classes, instruction in crafts, teaching of drawing and correspondence lessons. He also gave instruction to trainee teachers. In 1889 Gill became director for technical art . He published books on geometrical drawing and design . In 1892 he was appointed honorary curator of the art gallery and, following the resignation in December of Louis Tannert as master of the school of painting, Gill assumed control of all the board's art teaching activities. Gill had shown promise as an artist and hoped to win repute in Australia. However, teaching and administration had left little time for his painting. His rare decorative and aesthetic compositions, and also his landscapes, are painted with meticulous detail without sacrificing the overall unified effect. This is a quality passed on to some of his students, including the Hambidge sisters and Gustave Barnes in his early work. Gill's landscapes and some of his interiors show that he was interested in the accurate rendering of light - a rare quality in Adelaide before 1900' (Australian Dictionary of Biography). This charming painting - of coastal tea tree (or similar) flourishing prominently against a backdrop of a few substantial dwellings scattered along a line in the relatively featureless landscape - certainly satisfies these criteria.         Praktischer Leitfaden für Buntbuchdruck

      J. Müller Verlag, Berlin 1900 - Quarto. 48pp, 38 numbered plates, 3 unnumbered plates with tissue-guards. Original publisher's cloth with gold decoration and lettering on front board. Decorative endpapers and title-page. Fascinating work designed to give "those printers and pressmen who have little opportunity for on-the-job training in this branch [i.e. color printing] a way of doing all color printing, of whatever sort, effectively and with full assurance of a good result, and of mixing colors for the work at hand correctly and efficiently" (pp.vii-viii). A brief chapter on the theory of color is followed by chapters on color printing, printing of multicolored illustrations, and halftone three- and four-color printing. Following this is an explanation of the color tables and then the tables: thirty-three tables of color samples composed and arranged by various methods, four plates of the same picture in different color combinations, and several examples of monochromatic halftone illustration. Tables 1-3 display seventy-two standard colors. Tables 4-33 form a coherent set of colors and color combinations using inks supplied by Berger & Wirth. There are about 600 colors presented in related groups in finely nuanced sequences, including various degrees of gloss. Inks or mixtures used are identified for each color. Each color sample also appears in three degrees of brightness: the solid color, the color in thick parallel lines alternating with thin white lines (imitating dark halftone), and the color in thin lines alternating with white (light halftone), making 1,800 color possibilities in all! * This copy contains the extremely rare additional leaves in the back pocket that are invariably lacking. Minor shelf wear to binding. Minor foxing to first pages and edges. Text in German. Binding and interior in overall near fine condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Bureaux de la Revue, Paris 1900, 11,5x18,5cm, 2 volumes reliés. - Originale.binding editor to bradel half dark green calico, smooth back, as part of black morocco, gilt small iron and double gold in net queue.Douze numbers from January to December 1900. conservées.Chaque number Covers Edition is illustrated with a literary xylographie.Contributions Henry Bataille, Paul Claudel, Paul Fort, Henri Ghéon, André Gide, Francis Jammes, etc.Publication founded in 1890 by Henri Mazel, the Hermitage is a monthly magazine owned by the first wave Small journals Symbolists. In 1895, the magazine between declining and its new director, Edouard Ducoté, uses André Gide. The editorial team is reduced to twelve regular contributors, friends Gide. After many difficulties and attempts to overhaul the editorial team (Remy de Gourmont to make a pass and will also contribute financially in 1905), the Hermitage breathed his last in 1906. The Hermitage manages to detach other important magazines of the time as the Mercure de France or La Revue blanche because it boasts eclectic and apolitical; on its cover, you can also read that it is "the only journal that deals with politics or sociology [but] which deals only with literature and art." His illustrations are small art nouveau, and, true to his state of mind symbolist, employees are more interested in poetry than novel. Tiphaine Samoyault, French literary critic, says that the Hermitage expresses a transition straddles the fin de siècle aestheticism and poetry avant-garde of the 1910s. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.

        [Photo Album]: Wyoming

Wyoming. [circa 1900]. Oblong octavo. Gray paper wrappers with the word "Photographs" stamp in maroon and surrounded by a dragon on the front cover, measuring 7" x 10". A collection of 17 black and white photographs affixed to stiff gray paper without captions. Most photographs measure 4.5" x 6.5" with some measuring 3.5" x 5". Very good plus with some creasing and tiny tears. The photo album depicts scenes of turn-of-the-century Wyoming including landscape shots of rock faces, the Great Plains, and a horse drawn wagon crossing a gully. The people throughout the album, possibly relocated because of the boom in job creation due to mining and oil, are seen posing with guns, outside tiny turf homesteads and cabins, and on rock formations with small children. One photographs shows two of the men in the group pointing rifles at one another while the rest happily pose for the camera. The final images shows men working on a wagon while their horses graze by a chained up dog or coyote. A small, but interesting album with nicer than usual images, archiving the second wave of settlers to Wyoming, as well as the land's impressive natural features. .

Encre sur papier, 1900. Fine. Encre sur papier Début XXème, 20 x 31 cm. - Original ink drawing and pencil sketch overleaf. Signature stamp of the artist's signature in the lower right corner of the work, and signature stamp of the workshop at the back. This drawing is part of a series of ten studies for Bertin to 1920-1925. A small asymmetric lack of origin, otherwise very good condition. Provenance: the artist's studio, referenced to catalog Atelier Louis Anquetin (Thierry de Maigret, 28/11/08). Louis Anquetin, Étrépagny born in 1861 and died in Paris in 1932, is an important French painter. He began his career with avant-garde artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. With Émile Bernard, he is the inventor of Cloisonnisme. From 1884 to 1893, Louis Anquetin continues to explore new opportunities introduced by the release of Impressionism in French painting. From 1893, after a long confrontation with the "old masters", he adopts a bias pictorial that will line the general art movement, and take away from his friends. Dazzled by the baroque art and its creative force, so he thinks his childhood friends were involved in a pathway leading to the death of painting. He believes in a "perfect painting" which is embodied in the re-remember the lessons of Michelangelo and Rubens among others. His work becomes more conventional, he advocated a return to business by offering to reflect on the a priori conditions of any possible form of art in accordance with the rules of perspective and anatomy, as practiced by the masters the sixteenth and seventeenth century. Leaving only a few works that can be described as monumental, Anquetin turns prolific with its many studies and sketches, who considered that the design was "a very powerful means of expression" compulsory foundation of all arts plastics. Working voluntarily countdown of his time, Louis Anquetin made possible the existence of an original modern figuration. By his obstinacy and his passion for painting, he has indeed prevented is completely closed the way to the great Western tradition.
