Drawing "View of a Cliff in Soghanlü Dere (Onion Valley)" for The Century article Troglodyte in Cappadocia by J.R. Sitlingrton Sterrett

1900. 9 3/4x12in. Fine. 9 3/4x12in. Harry Fenn was an English-born American illustrator, landscape painter, etcher, and wood engraver. Fenn began his artistic career as a wood engraver but quickly switched to drawing for illustration and watercolor painting. His works as an engraver were first commissioned in 1867 (dated 1868) for Whittier's Snow-Bound published by Boston's Ticknor and Fields for the Christmas trade. He was a skilled and successful illustrator in the United States in the latter part of the nineteenth century, which was a time when illustrations in periodicals and books were the primary means of visual image sharing. He illustrated landscapes throughout the world, especially the United States, as well as recreated depictions of architecture and plant life. His enormous popularity informed the public about distant lands and led the middle class to appreciate printed pictures as works of art.

        HOLDENVILLE TIMES. SPECIAL.

[ca.1900] - Broadside, 21 1/2 x 15 3/4 in., printed in six columns. Uniformly browned, old fold lines, with some minor chipping and wear along folds, affecting some letters in the text. Archivally deacidified, and backed with thin paper. This newspaper broadside prints the text of the Creek Treaty, as approved by the Senate of the United States on February 26. "Printed copies cannot be had from Washington for some days [and] [t]he heading and the signatures are omitted for convenience" in this special edition. According to the treaty, Creek lands were to be divided, appraised, and allotted, as per the Dawes Commission. "All citizens who were living on the first day of Apri[l], eighteen hundred and ninety-nine, entitled to be enrolled under section twenty one of the act of congress, approved June twenty-eighth, eighteen hundred and ninety-eight, entitled "An act for the protection of the people of the Indian Territory, and for other purposes," shall be placed upon the rolls to be made by said commission under said act of congress." Allowances were made for the several schools, boarding schools, and orphanages operating on the reservations. Each citizen on the rolls was to be allotted 160 acres of land. This weekly newspaper was published in Indian Territory [Oklahoma] between 1896 and Oct. 1910, and was succeeded by the "Holdenville Democrat." The editor Isaac Warren Singleton (1863-1940) had previously published the "Indian Journal" in Eufaula. According to Carolyn Thomas Foreman's work "Oklahoma Imprints, 1835-1907," [Univ. of Oklahoma Press, 1936, p. 188]: "The 'Times' was the pioneer paper and in 1901 Singleton, the editor and founder, was also mayor of the town." Original copies of it are scarce in institutional holdings. OCLC lists only two locations: Oklahoma Historical Society and Oklahoma State [microfilm], available for a limited number of issues, seemingly none for 1900. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

[Kaiser Wilhelm II]. [Illustrated Manuscript]. ["Hoch der Kaiser Myself Und Gott"]

S.l. (USA), 1900. Very good antiquarian condition. Small 4to., handwritten poem of 26 leaves, with 13 original ink drawings and 13 single-size text leaves. Contemporary boards attached with 2 pieces of twine strings (evidence of 2 additional stitching holes). Written on "Victory Bond" paper. Curious American manuscript, containing poems satirizing Kaiser Wilhelm II, illustrated throughout with military costume and caricatures of Wilhelm and his contemporaries including Victoria I and Bismarck. Although now virtually forgotten, the poem was one of the most famous of its day, and created a worldwide sensation: "It sang itself around the world and opened the ears of countless authors, editorial writers, students of political affairs, cartoonists, and others who make up the world of political sentiment [...] This bit of doggerel - its author would hardly claim more for it - focussed the eyes of many thinking men, the world over, upon Germany. Inferentially it revived the warnings, so repeatedly ignored, of the rapidly increasing power of Prussian militarism. It caused attention to be turned to the powerful military machine that Germany was building up" (SOURCE: Randolph Wellford Smith, "The Sober World" (1919) pp. 63-65. The verses are written in a "hybrid" of English and German, and ridicule Wilhelm's 'Declaration of the Divine Right of Kings.' It was recited by an American naval officer, Captain (later Rear-Admiral) Joseph B. Coghlan, at a dinner in New York in 1898, and nearly cost him his captaincy; the scandal escalated into an international incident and embroiled the United States government with Germany. In the present manuscript the illustrations and text were copied from the 1900 Abbey Press edition of "Hoch der Kaiser: Myself Und Gott" by Alexander McGregor Rose (see below) with illustrations by Jessie A. Walker. The manuscript does not have any title-page or mention of the "Hoch der Kaiser"; instead it is simply signed by the scribe "Belle Crofoot / Dec. 25, 1900." Crofoot is an uncommon last name, but it seems to have been slightly more common in North America than in England. Certainly the paper is American. As we learn from "Post's Mill Directory for 1910," paper watermarked "Victory Bond" was manufactured in American Writing Paper Co., Holyoke, Mass., and Midland Paper Co., Chicago. In the quasi-German text are substituted v for w, t for d, d for th, and f for v. The first stanza reads (in plain English): "The Kaiser of the Fatherland / And God on high all things command, / We two! Oh! don't you understand? / Myself -- and God." Frederick Wilhelm Viktor Albert of Hohenzollern, Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany, reigned from 1888 until he was forced to abdicate in 1918. In the present poem, Alexander McGregor Rose suggests that the Kaiser is "grosser" than his great ship, the so-called "Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse," a huge four-stack ship which had her maiden voyage in 1897, from Bremerhaven to New York. Alexander MacGregor Rose (1846-1898) was born in Banffshire, Scotland, and graduated from the University of Aberdeen in 1867. He became an ordained minister in 1875; by 1879 he was bankrupt and in disgrace. Abandoning his wife and family, he arrived in New York in 1879. For the rest of his life he was an itinerant journalist, drifting all over the country, and wandering great distances (e.g. San Francisco, Toronto, Montreal, and points in between). "Hoch der Kaiser" became so popular in decades before World War I that his very authorship of the poem was forgotten. The poem is today recognized as a model of its kind, for which see Caroline Blyth's "Decadent Verse: An Anthology of Late-Victorian Poetry, 1872-1900" (2011) no. 342, in which the poem is reprinted in full.

Ceylon Papers]: Eight papers on the geology of Ceylon by Ananda Coomaraswamy, extracted from academic journals, with nine related papers by his colleagues.

1900-1903 1900 - A remarkable group of eight scientific papers by Ananda Coomaraswamy, including his first published work, Ceylon Rocks and Graphite (1900), from the Journal of the Geological Society; with Notes on the occurrence of Corundum .(1901); The crystalline limestones of Ceylon (1902); The Point-de-Galle group (1902); Contributions to Ceylon geology (1903); The crystalline rocks of Ceylon (1904); Mineralogical notes (1904); and, with G.T. Prior, Serindibite, a new borosilicate from Ceylon (1903). The first paper, bound second, bears an inscription from Coomaraswamy to James Parsons, his assistant, and author of a paper on quartz in Ceylon. Parsons was lost in the jungle in 1909. A paper each by Coomaraswamy's teachers at University College, Professors Bonney and Garwood, are on alpine geology. Their presence, and the two pages of pencil notes in Coomaraswamy's hand suggest his ownership. The paper inscribed to Parsons was presumably returned to Coomaraswamy after his death. The binding appears to be American, and date from AK's period in Boston. Bound in green cloth. Two pages of pencil notes in Coomaraswamy's hand are loosely inserted.

Paris: M.J. & Cie,, c.1900. Mechanical, gambling racing game in its original wood and card case with removable lid (377 × 377 × 179 mm, with lid in place), covering of black diapered paper with gilt "pin-striping" to the edges, plain blue paper lining; 9 variously painted, numbered cast lead vehicles mounted on metal supports in slots through the vermillion-painted pressed tin race track, within green baize surround, 4 nickel-plated sets of attractively "turned" course poles, with trophy-style cup to hold wagers in the centre, nickel-plated name-plate, and the lever to activate the spring-loaded mechanism mounted on lower front; tricolour pennant winning post, on metal pole which sockets into nickel plated stand, still present. The box a little faded and rubbed at the edges, track paint chipped in places, baize a touch rubbed at the extremities and with some spots of moth, cars slightly worn, and all but one missing their little flags but drivers still in place, but overall extraordinarily well-preserved, and still fully functioning. Jeu de Course was originally marketed as a horse-racing game, the name-plate here still features a galloping horse, at the turn of the century being adapted for the motoring craze, and subsequently taking in the fascination with aviation, a model being produced featuring Blériot monoplanes. The cars featured on the present example are reminiscent of Belle Epoque vis-à-vis Peugeots (c.1894-1902). This automotive version is extremely uncommon, and this is a particularly complicated model having three concentric "orbits" of three vehicles each, rather than the 4 or 6 racers usually encountered, it is fully working, and in excellent unrestored condition.

Pfauenpaar.

Mammoth plate view of Pleasant Green Taylor's Family

Ogden, UT: Thomas Studio, [c.1900]. Photograph. Mammoth plate print (24" by 18"). Unframed on photographer's matte (27" by 21"). Matte is clean with the exception of the lower left corner, which is creased (does not affect the image). Image is very clean and has deep rich sepia tones. Photograph shows Taylor with all of his polygamous wives and children. Taylor's first wife, Clarissa Lake (1828-1900), was deceased when this photograph was taken, but she has been added to the photograph, sitting at Taylor's right side. Apparently, the photographer and the family anticipated adding her ghostly image to the portrait in the darkroom, as space has been saved immediately right of the patriarch to accommodate adding the first wife in the darkroom. This is an unusual image, not just because of its size, but that it shows a polygamous family post Manifesto (Wilford Woodruff's 1890 "Manifesto" was the beginning of the end for officially sanctioned plural marriages in the LDS Church). Taylor and his parents were early LDS converts (1832) joining the fledgling faith in Monroe County, Missouri. The family faced many of the same tribulations of other Mormons of the era. When Pleasant Green arrived in the Great Basin he settled in Harrisville, Utah a small community outside of Ogden, Utah, where he later became a leading figure in the community and also the Bishop of the local LDS ward. Extremely scarce image from uncommon Ogden photographer. Not mentioned in 'Set In Stone Fixed in Glass' nor any other Utah or western photographic reference. Mammoth plate images of any kind from Utah territory are extremely uncommon, especially by lesser known Utah photographers like Thomas. Few pioneer photographers had the wherewithal to afford the significant expense of purchasing and maintaining large format cameras and glass plate negatives.

        ILE DE FRANCE [manuscript title]

[N.p., but most likely Mauritius, 1900. Bottom corners trimmed away, wear and some loss along left and top edge. Light to moderate soiling. About good. An early manuscript map of the island of Mauritius, done in pen and ink on laid paper. On the map, the town of Grande Port is labeled as Port Bourbon - the port was renamed Port Bourbon when the French took over the island in 1710, though the name reverted back to Grande Port by the late 18th century. Plains, mountains, rivers, and other major geographical features are indicated on the map, as are the outlying smaller islands. The Dutch were the first Europeans to become interested in the island, taking possession in 1598. After exploiting the island's dense forests for a century and introducing the cultivation of sugar cane and cotton, in 1710 the Dutch abandoned the colony. The French soon claimed it as "Ile de France," and the island remained under the control of the French East India Company until 1767. During the long war between France and England at the beginning of the 19th century, Mauritius proved to be an important strategic naval base, and as a result the British took charge of the island in 1810, and the Treaty of Paris confirmed official British possession in 1814. It remained an important sugar producing colony, and in the 20th century agricultural production was expanded to include tea, rice, and other produce.

ALASKA - NOME GOLD RUSH: Autograph Letter Signed "Edwin" from Sherzer to his Fiancé Clara Miller in St. Louis MO. Dated Nov. 1, 1900. Sherzer].

Nome, Alaska 1900 - Nome, Alaska, Nov. 1, 1900. With 6 1/2 large octavo pages of text on rectos in dark brown ink on beige thin wove paper (20 - 25 lines per page), with the last sheet having half the verso filled in pencil. Letter accompanied by addressed & stamped envelope, postmarked Nome, AK, Nov. 2 1900. Paper with some very mild age toning but overall letter and envelope in very good original condition. Missouri natives Sherzer and his brother were two of Nome's first postal workers and also operated a dog sledding business in Nome. In this interesting content rich letter from the first year of the Gold Rush in Nome, Sherzer describes his everyday life in Nome to his Fiancé and also in detail his dog sledding business: "We have had lots of snow and everything is on runners and everybody riding. There was a fine trail made on the river in front of our cabin and we called it the race course. The dogs would simply fly over it and we were sitting back on the sled had great fun., you see women all wrapped up in furs seated in a basket sled with a team of 5 or 6 dogs running along with them. I have found it fine sport, but brother says just wait till you get out on the trail and it is work, then you won¿t enjoy it so much., We have both been working in the Post Office but that only lasted until Nov. 1. However, we would not have stayed anyway as we have our assessment work to do before January and we can also make more money with our dog team. Four or five persons have tried to buy the dogs from us already and one fellow wanted to hire them but we wouldn't let any of them go as we have a fine team and have not been keeping them all summer for nothing."
