        Reise-Erinnerungen [China and Berlin]

Germany, ca. 1900. Oblong folio (28.0 x 41.0 cm). Original blind black quarter leather over pattered green boards. Gilt title on front board. Patterned endpapers. Edges red. = Photo album with mostly original photos, each of 16 x 11 cm or slightly larger. Two pages with five mountain views, presumably the Alps; 10 pages with 31 original photos from China - for instance, the Yu Nui San lighthouse near Tsingfau; a temple and buddhist statues inside a temple; one photo of the inauguration of the Iltis monument in Shanghai on 21 November 1898 ["The Iltis Monument - the Iltis Denkmal, ????? - commemorated the 77 dead German naval personnel, whose ship, the gunboat SMS Iltis, had foundered off the Shandong coast in July 1896. As the vessel sank the men were reported to have gathered around the mast and sung a hymn: 'Now thank we all our God'." (Lost monuments and memorials on the Shanghai Bund, 3)]; four street view, probably Shanghai, four photos, possibly from the Shanghai area, two showing capital punishment by beheading, one with local people watching, the other with European spectators; four with views, mainly of Shanghai, including the Bund, before 1900, the results of an earthquake (?), a racing track; the peculiar stone arched Jade Belt bridge, in Beijing, the Summer Palace (which still exists and is on the UNESCO World Heritage list); the Great Wall, statues of, quite possibly, the Stone Elephants Road in Nanjing (however, here the elephants are in a field, rather than along a road). Other photos show people, including two men smoking opium etc., etc. This is followed by 12 professional photo prints of Berlin, ca. 1900. In all, a very good album with many surprising if not astounding pictures of China. All photos in very good condition, without fading or discolouring.

[Binding, Fine- Miss Marshall and Edith Gedye] Paolo & Francesca

London: John Lane, The Bodley Head, 1900. First edition thus. Superbly bound by Miss M. Marshall and Edith J. Gedye in full tan polished calf with all-over stylized gitl vine and blossom pattern surrounded by concentric rectangular gilt ruling and stippled solid spheres on both covers, five raised bands with gilt decorated panels on spine, wide gilt dentelles. Miss Marshall was a binder at 5 Bloomsbury Square where Sangorski and Sutcliffe had their first bindery in the early 1900's and worked collaboratively with Edith J. Gedye early on in their careers. They exhibited their bindings in 1903 and 1906 at A&CES Exhibitions and were active selling their work through 1907 (see Tidcombe). As well, Gedye went on to produce excellent quality bindings up to 1920. With their collaborative monogram "M. & G., 1903," in gilt on rear dentelle. A wonderful Arts & Crafts feeling to this binding, and a very early date on the binding, one of their first collaborations. Near fine.

Fleurs et photographies de Terre Sainte

Jéruzalem, Boulos Meo, [N.D. (ca. 1900)]. Oblong folio (29.2 x 40.6 cm). Bevelled, polished olive wood panels with carved vignette and wooden inlays. Later red morocco spine with gilt title.= The work consists of thick boards with, mounted, and captioned large full colour photos (sheet size 30.4 x 23.0 cm, actual photo size 25 x 18 cm) of towns and other places in the Holy Land, and still lifes of real, dried, flowers from nearby localities. The colours of the flowers are beautifully preserved. The photos show Jaffa, Jeruzalem, Bethlehem, and many other places. This is a very rare, large size copy of a work published in various editions by Boulos Meo. "a family of Italian origin that came to the Holy Land with the Crusades. Boulos Meo opened a shop near the Jaffa Gate in Jerusalem in 1872, supplying souvenirs, photographs and postcards to an ever-increasing number of tourists. Books, pairing photographs of sacred places with collages of dried flowers from the sites on the facing pages, were popular in the late 19th century. Bound in olive wood, a material often used by the local craftsmen to make mementos, the albums combined views of the Holy Land with tangible elements of the earth. The Boulos Meo business later served as a cafe and a source for antiquities and Persian rugs, remaining open until 1994." (The Alexander Museum of Postal History and Philately: With a large, handwritten dedication to Sir Reginald Wingate Pascha, dated 3 juin 1818. "Sir Francis Reginald Wingate, 1st Baronet GCB, GCVO, GBE, KCMG, DSO, TD (1861-1953) was a British general and administrator in Egypt and the Sudan" (Wikipedia). Some wear to the panels with the inlay partly perished; some light foxing, but usually clean. A very good copy, with an interesting provenance. This edition should not be confused with the usually later editions, which also have olive wood panels and dried flowers, but measure only 11 by 17 cm, or even smaller, and are with or without photographs. This copy is of a very unusual, sumptuous size and we could not trace any other copy in the market.

[Various locations in Bermuda], 1900. [40]pp., largely two gelatin silver photographs per page, plus a handful of loose photographs. Contemporary leather album. Spine perished, a few leaves loose. Good. A fascinating photographic record of turn-of-the-century Bermuda, with contemporary manuscript captions beneath most photographs. The first page is titled in manuscript, "Bermuda February 1900." The first few photographs show the open-sea voyage to the island, with the majority of the remainder of the album devoted to the port, people, buildings, landscape, and landmarks ranging across the entirety of Bermuda - from Ireland Island, around the western end to South Shore Park, past Bel Terre, Hamilton, and Spanish Point, all the way to the eastern extreme at St. Georges Island. The photos feature various street views (one along Cedar Avenue), royal palms, a banana tree, several ships at port including the H.M.S. Terror (not the famed Franklin expedition ship, but a later British gunboat), a screw palm, the "Oldest church on the Islands," a rubber tree, a few views in various parks, a mahogany tree, two of the governor's bodyguards, the "Entrance to the Bishop's Palace," rock quarries, a "Birdseye view of Hamilton," various homes, a "Birdseye view from Bel Terre," the shopping district in St. Georges, "Fortifications on Ireland Island," and much more. Perhaps the most interesting photograph shows a native man playing a banjo on the street, accompanied by a small native child playing tambourine. The same lady appears in several of the photographs, which are presumably taken by her traveling companion. The photos begin with the travelers' arrival on the island, and end with their departure. One of the photos towards the end of the album reads, "Last view of the land of the lily and the rose." An excellent collection of vernacular photography from a period in Bermuda's history not often seen in pictures.

Logische Untersuchungen.

London to Ladysmith via Pretoria

New York: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1900. First edition, only printing. Hardcover. This is an unusually clean copy of the U.S. first edition of Churchill's fourth published book. London to Ladysmith via Pretoria is the first of Churchill's two books based on his newspaper despatches sent from the front in South Africa. In October 1899, the second Boer War erupted between the descendants of Dutch settlers in South Africa and the British. Churchill, an adventure-seeking young cavalry officer and war correspondent, swiftly found himself in South Africa with the 21st Lancers and an assignment as press correspondent to the Morning Post. Not long thereafter, on 15 November 1899, Churchill was captured during a Boer ambush of an armored train. His daring escape less than a month later made him a celebrity and helped launch his political career. London to Ladysmith via Pretoria contains 27 letters and telegrams to the Morning Post written between 26 October 1899 and 10 March 1900. It was published in England in mid-May 1900 and sold well. Churchill returned from South Africa in July 1900 and spent the summer campaigning hard in Oldham, where he won his first seat in Parliament on 1 October 1900 in the so-called "khaki election". The American edition offered here is more scarce than the British, with a single printing of which no more than an estimated 1,850 copies were sold. This edition is bound in pebble grain red cloth that proved quite susceptible to blotchy wear and soiling, particularly on the spine. This is an unusually clean and bright copy which we grade conservatively as very good plus. The binding is square, clean, and tight with sharp corners and only light wear to extremities. This copy has been substantially spared the blotchy wear and spine darkening that most copies suffer, and retains bright spine gilt with only light, uniform spine sunning. The contents are notably bright with no previous ownership marks. All maps and plans are intact, including the folding maps, which remain properly folded. The top edge gilt is bright. Trivial spotting is confined to the fore and bottom edges. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A4.2, Woods/ICS A4(b), Langworth p.55.

With seventy-eight photogravures and six lithographic facsimiles in colour, many of them duplicated.         [Pissarro, Lucien] Autograph Letter Signed to Francis Meynell

12mo. Folded sheet on gray paper, one page. Autograph letter from Lucien Pissarro, founder of the Eragny Press and son of the famous impressionist painter, Camille Pissarro. Lucien was a gifted painter, printmaker and designer of the early 1900's, to Francis Meynell, poet and painter and printer at the Nonesuch Press. "The Brook, Hammersmith, 24, Sept. '06, Dear Mr. Meynell, My friend Mr. Symons has told me of your kindness in interviewing Mr. W. M. Rossetti on our behalf. I am extremely grateful to you , and much regret your trouble was not rewarded with success. With very many thanks, Believe me, yours v. truly, Lucien Pissarro." This is probably in connection with a book Pissarro was preparing on Dante Gabriel Rossetti, seeking William Michael Rossetti as a source ("Rossetti," by Lucien Pissarro, T.C. Jack, 1908). Pissarro letters with important content are quite scarce.
