Typed Letter Signed on "Charles Scribner's Sons Publishers" stationery, 8vo, New York, Jan, 13, 1947

As executor of Thomas Wolfe's estate, Perkins discusses arrangements for Wolfe's books posthumously published in French. He writes to Marion Saunders, British literary agent who owned her own small firm in New York marketing American authors to foreign markets. Perkins begins, "I have arranged for the publication in French of THE WEB AND THE ROCK with Margueret, and OF TIME AND THE RIVER with Editions Stock...I am not sure that LOOK HOMEWARD, ANGEL wasn't published years ago before it came under my control...." He signs in bold ink, "Maxwell Perkins Exec." Three notes possibly in two other hands, in pencil and pen in upper and lower margins. Though Thomas Wolfe (1900-38)and Maxwell Perkins separated professionally in 1936 after eight years of working together, Perkins was asked to be the executor of Wolfe's estate. As executor, Perkins refers to the posthumous publications of Wolfe's works, "The Web and the Rock" and "Of Time and the River," in French. Fine literary association and reference to Thomas Wolfe. Perkins met Thomas Wolfe in January of 1929. According to www.nchistoricsites.org, it was "one of the strongest relationships he [Perkins] ever forged with an author." Perkins was a harsh editor who did severe editing of Wolfe's "Look Homeward, Angel" and some say that it prompted Wolfe to leave him. Others say it was only Perkins' editing that made Wolfe's novel great. Wolfe wrote to Perkins in November of 1936 severing ties, but only describing his leaving as being due to "differences of opinion and belief." [www.historyvshollywood.com]. Information discussing the 2016 film "Genius," the story of the relationship between Perkins and Wolfe, describes their relationship as a father-son relationship with a special bond. The film was based on A. Scott Berg's national 1978 bestseller and National Book Award-winner, "Max Perkins: Editor of Genius ," by A. Scott Berg.

Album of photographs of a hunting expedition in the American West]

[Np 1900 - (6 3/4 x 11 inches). 117 silver print photographs (63 measuring approx. 5 x 6 3/4 inches; 54 measuring approx. 2 3/8 x 3 3/8 inches), mounted within an album. Some fading and silvering to the images, a few of the mounts detached. Contemporary cloth. Housed in a black morocco backed box. A hunting expedition to the far west. George Frederick Norton (1876-1917), born in Kentucky, attended the Lawrenceville School and served as a partner at the brokerage Ex Norton & Co. However, his life's passion was travel, adventure and big game. Norton made numerous trips to the west and Alaska on private hunting expeditions, including the one depicted in the present album, and collected and donated specimens (with a particular emphasis on bear skulls) to the American Museum of Natural History the Smithsonian and other institutions. Indeed in 1910, the Department of Agriculture granted him a permit to capture and ship Alaskan brown bears in excess of the bag limit. In 1901, he journeyed around the world and in 1908 he helped finance the final Peary expedition to the North Pole, accompanying him aboard the ship Eric as far north as Etah, Greenland. During World War I, Norton would serve in the American Field Service, and would be killed in action in France. The present album, dating from circa 1900, shows Norton along with several companions on a hunting expedition. Given the terrain and the fauna (moose, mountain lion, pronghorn antelope, elk), the expedition depicted in these images was likely to Montana, Idaho or Wyoming. However, given Norton's many expeditions farther north, some of the images may also be from Alaska. Subjects include landscape, as well as poses with killed game, field dressing, various camps, the party with its pack animals on the move on the plains and high country, moving through the snow, party members on horseback, etc. The album is accompanied by four typed letters, dated 1910-1917, concerning Norton's collections of Alaskan bear skulls. Seventeen Photo Albums of Railroad Photography and Ephemera. 1900-1975

      - Collection of seventeen 20th century photo albums packed with over 1,000 railroad photographs and items of rail ephemera. A lifelong archive of unknown rail enthusiast; possibly an employee of the New York Central line based in Collinwood Ohio, in East Cleveland. Several of the 17 albums are emblazoned with the New York Central logo on front. Photographs have corner mounts with the majority still intact. A handful of photographs have either come out of the mounts or are laid loose. Photos range from home snapshots to commercially sold collectible railroad views to official railroad archival shots. Several of the commercial shots are from the George Melvin collection, Rolling Stock Replicas, J. R. Quinn Railroad Photography and Rebman Photo Service. Sizes from 3 x 3 inches to 2 ¾ x 8 inch panoramas to 8 x 10 inch views. The large majority of photos show locomotives, both still and in motion, but collection also includes views of freight cars, passenger cars, cabooses, wrecked trains and photos of train paintings. Dated images range from the early 20th century to 1974. Home snapshots date primarily from the 50's, 60’s and 70’s. More than 50 distinct rail lines are identifiable including the Penn Central, Western Maryland, Rock Island, Illinois Central, Durham and Southern, Arizona Southern, Bangor & Aroostook, Denver & Rio Grande, Saint Louis & San Francisco, Cadiz Railroad, M, K, & T and many others. Specific locations identified include views from Cincinnati, Binghamton, NY, Cumberland, MD, Erie, PA, Buffalo, NY, Ontario Canada, and the outlier White Sulphur Springs, MT. , and more. It is assumed this rail fan took snaps during vacations and/or work travel. Many views were shot at crossings, bridges and country views and were shot with a good eye for composition and timing. Railroad ephemera make up perhaps 15% of the collection including ticket stubs, rail passes, pamphlets, photo postcards, rail letterheads and cancelled checks. A treasure trove of railroad history, perfect for the rail collector, historian or avid foamer. Scans available upon request.

        Map S. - Battersea (1900).

1900 - London, 1900. Lithographic map with original hand colour. Sheet 345 x 365mm. Binding folds flattened, key placed at top margin. A map of Battersea, one section (of twenty) of an extended version of the incredibly influential Poverty Map, originally published in Charles Booth's 'Life and Labour of the People in London', a founding text of British sociology. Showing Batterea, Balham Lavender Hill, Battersea Rise, Nine Elms and part of Brixton. The key gives seven colour codes for the degree of wealth of the inhabitants (ranging from black - 'Lowest class', through shades of blue and purple - 'Poor', 'Mixed', 'Fairly Comfortable', to red - 'Well to do' and yellow - 'Wealthy'). Booth (1840-1916), owner of the Booth Shipping Line, acted in response to an 1886 Pall Mall Gazette article that claimed that 25% of Londoners lived in poverty. Booth regarded this figure as wildly exaggerated, so recruited a team of volunteer researchers to compile an analysis of social conditions based on field visits and interviews with local police, clergy and employers. The first volume of 'Life and Labour' (1889), covering the East End, showed that 35% lived in poverty. The second series, covering the rest of the city (1891) showed that no less than 30 per cent of the city's total population could be classed as poor. See HYDE: Victorian Maps of London, 252.

The son of the wolf: tales of the far north

Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1900. frontis by Maynard Dixon inserted, [i-viii] [1] 251p., printer's imprint [252] blank leaf, very good blackish green cloth with silver buckled belt and corners, silver on spine somewhat worn, first edition, printing of 2028 copies according to Sisson/Martens pages 2 &116 and BAL 11869 and Woodbridge. Publisher's imprint at bottom of spine first state with no periods around ampersand : Houghton | Mifflin & Co.; no broken type on page 147 (perfect "e" in spruce and perfect "t" in might) no broken type on 64-67, commas before and after 1900 on copyright page, sets of binding threads between 6/7, 18/19 and every six leaves thereafter. Two neat previous owners' book plates on front endpapers. This copy matches all first printing, first state points with the following two discrepancies from Sisson: 1. the frontispiece has the caption ""Malemute Kid Halted Him" (page 64) as opposed to "The Men of the Forty Mile" as stated in Sisson; 2. The frontispiece appears to be inserted rather than sewn-in although Swann's auctioned described first printing with frontis tipped-in stating later printings were sewn-in, a disagreement with Sisson. Also, to this bibliographer the color of the binding is in question as well. Appears to be a blackish-green but could be interpreted as a deep gray-green. All-in-all a very nice copy of the author's rare first book.

        THE AMERICAN JOURNAL OF PHOTOGRAPHY

Thos. H. McCollin & Co, Philadelphia 1900 - 8vos., variable paginations, with original photographs mounted throughout. 14 volumes. This unbroken run begins with Vol. 7, and concludes with Vol. 20. Acquired from the British Patent Office and bears their stamp throughout, often in the margin or surface of an original photograph. Some later volumes show dampstaining. Newly rebound in brown cloth over boards with paper spine labels. Although the title of this journal is almost identical to an earlier publication, it is entirely different. Begun in 1879, largely as a trade circular of Anthony and Scovil, it gained substance in 1886 with articles, reviews and reports predominantly written by members of the Photographic Society of Philadelphia, a preeminent group of American Naturalistic or Pictorialist photographers, among them, William H. Rau, John G. Bullock, Robert S. Redfield, et al. An illustrated monthly devoted to photography in the widest sense. Publication was suspended in 1898, as well as between April and December 1899. It merged with "Photo Era Magazine" in 1900, which was absorbed by "American Photography" in April 1932. This serial was a trade circular of Anthony & Scovill before 1886. The Elements" - Original Manuscript Poem signed.

21,7 cm x 28 cm. 1 sheet / Folded in center. Minor remains of a rusty paperclip (only visible at the backside of the paper). Original Manuscript poem by the American poet Oscar Williams. The poem is written on a piece of large quarto sized blank paper with a 'Macadam Bond' watermark with Williams' signature at the foot of the page. Oscar Williams was the pen name of Oscar Kaplan (December 29, 1900 October 10, 1964), an American anthologist and poet. Williams was born Oscar Kaplan in Letychiv, Ukraine, son of Jewish parents Mouzya Kaplan and Chana Rapoport. He immigrated to New York at the age of seven. His first book, Golden Darkness, was awarded the Yale Younger Poets Prize. Among his influential anthologies are Master Poems of the English Language, Immortal Poems of the English Language, The Pocket Book of Modern Verse, and the Little Treasury Poetry Series, which were used in colleges and high schools around the U.S. in the 1950s and 1960s. During his lifetime, anthologies he edited sold more than two million copies, a nearly unheard amount for books of poetry. Many of his anthologies are still being republished today. Though a friend and promoter of poets like Dylan Thomas and George Barker, Williams' own poetry is not highly regarded by critics, though he published several volumes during his lifetime, and is not nearly as accomplished as the poetry of his wife, Gene Derwood (19091954). Among Williams' poems are "Revenge," "Poem," "Poet," "The Last Supper" and "I Sing an Old Song," "The City's Face". Shopping for Meat in Winter is a typical Williams poem, with its urban theme, forced rhyme, and attempts at replicating the neo-Romanticism of the New Apocalypse.Shopping for Meat in WinterWhat lewd, naked and revolting shape is this?A frozen oxtail in the butcher's shopLong and lifeless upon the huge block of woodOn which the ogre's axe begins chop chop. The sun like incense fumes on the smoky glass,The street frets with people, the winter windThrows knives, prices dangle from shoppers' mouthsWhile the grim vegetables, on parade, bring to mindThe great countryside bathed in golden sleep,The trees, the bees, the soft peace everywhere--I think of the cow's tail, how all summer longIt beat the shapes of harps into the air. Oscar Williams and his poet-artist wife Gene Derwood sponsored an annual 15,000 poetry award which bears their name. They lived in a penthouse of an office building on Water Street. In his later years, Oscar Williams' home near Wall Street in Manhattan served as a mecca for young poets. Asked how he chose the poems used in his anthologies, he said, "How do you pick one girl to marry? In poetry it's divine polygamy. Generally, when a poem stays with me a long time that poem delivers the goods". Throughout his life, Oscar Williams eschewed his Jewish background. He was always mysterious about his origins and was buried by an Episcopal Church. He was survived by a son, Strephon Kaplan-Williams, who was raised in boarding schools and hardly ever interacted with his parents. His papers are housed at the Indiana University Lilly Library. ca. 960 unpaginierte Blätter (= ca. 1900 S.), Folio (= 27 x 40 x 14 cm), Original Schweinsleder-Band der Zeit auf 6 Bünden. 1 ganzs. Titelkupfer und 2 ganzs. Kupfer-Portraits.

A Superb inlaid Turn-of-the-Twentieth Century 'Mosaic' Binding Possibly by Heni Noulhac [MOSAIC BINDING]. Missel des Sacrements. Nouvelle Édition mise en harmonie avec des derniers Décrets Pontificaux. Limoges: Paul Mellottée, Éditeur, [ca. 1900]. Small octavo (6 1/8 x 3 1/2 inches; 156 x 88 mm.). 384 pp. With one inserted plate (facing p. 103). A superb early twentieth century (ca. 1900) 'Mosaic' binding, unsigned but most likely by Henri Noulhac. Full black morocco, the front cover elaborately inlaid with literally hundreds of pieces of colored morocco in a geometric and floral design. The back cover with identical design in blind. Spine with eight raised bands (four double), ruled and lettered in gilt in compartments. Gilt decorated board edges and elaborate gilt turn-ins, watered dark green silk liners and end-leaves, all edges gilt. Housed in the original felt-lined, black leather 'jewel-case' with original gilt clasp. A remarkable survival. There is a small stamp on the verso of the front end-paper but the name is indiscernible. Henri Noulhac (1866-1931) specialized in Jansenist bindings, which were completely plain on the outside, but frequently decorated sumptuously on the doublures inside. He executed several highly elaborate bindings designed by Jules Chadel for his employer Vever, the great jeweller, collector of beautiful books, and one of the greatest compilers of ukiyo-e Japanese woodblock prints. Noulhac also trained Rose Adler and Madeleine Gras who both later designed beautiful Art Deco bindings. (Victor Arwas. Art Nouveau: The French Aesthetic, p. 568). In researching this fine little binding we looked through Alastair Duncan & Georges De Bartha's Art Nouveau and Art Deco Bookbinding, and we came across three bindings by Henri Noulhac that were somewhat reminiscent of the style of this particular example. They appear as items #190, 191 and 193.
