[Photo Album]: Gloucester, Massachusetts Sailing and Civil War Vets

Gloucester, Massachusetts, 1900. Near Fine. Small quarto measuring 7" x 10". Flexible brown leather album with "Photographs" stamped on the front board. Contains 93 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs and one laid in cyanotype measuring between 2.5" x 4" and 2.5" x 9" with captions. Very good minus photo album with rubbing, chips, and tears, with near fine photographs.A photo album kept by a family from Gloucester, Massachusetts at the turn of the century. The album depicts the sailing culture of the area with numerous photos of sailboats and ships off of the Massachusetts coast. There are photos of various beaches in the area including Fisherman's Beach and King's Beach. The photos are wonderful amateur shots of Massachusetts beaches including crashing waves, the rocky coast, water fowl, and people sailing. These photos detail the process the photographer was going through to create more artistic shots using lighting and clouds. Two photos are combined together to make a panorama of Marblehead harbor brimming with sailboats in the water. Two photos show a parade through Monument Square. Another two photos laid in depicts girls playing tennis at Simmons College. One page shows two photographs of old men captioned with the names, Ed March, Charles Hackall, Ed Nesbit, and Tom Stanley, who were Civil War veterans. They are seen sitting together with two additional photos of Ed Nesbit posing: one in portrait style and one outside with a cane. Later in the album there are reproductions of images of a Civil war company posing in a group shot and one of two men sitting together. They are presumably the older men in their youth. An interesting assortment of turn of the century snapshots of the Massachusetts coast as well as Civil War veterans.

Thesaurus Linguae Latinae [ThLL; TLL].

I+II und XI/2, Fasc. I-IV. Monterey County Cattle Association Broadside

Salinas Index Print N.D. - Linen broadside with black text and depicts 51 cattle brands. Broadside measures 10" x 11 ¾" and is in very good condition. At one time folded twice, light soiling on verso marks where folded; three out of the four sides have minor fraying; bottom left quarter of broadside has light foxing or soiling; corners have light foxing. Broadside reads: "$200 Reward! The above reward will be paid for such information as will to the conviction of any person or persons guilty of stealing stock belonging to any of the following named members of the Monterey County Cattle Association." Underneath that statement are names of association members with their brand illustrated next to name. It was printed by Salinas Index Print, which could be related to the Salinas Weekly Index newspaper, circa 1900. The financial base in the Salinas Valley of California was, and still is, agriculture, and "mixed grain farming and stock raising prevailed in the ranches of southern Monterey County" in the late 19th century (Monterey County Historical Society). Fifty-four names of stock-raisers are printed the broadside, some prominent names of early cattle ranching families and businessmen included are Bardin, Carr, Graves and Abbott. J. D. Carr, W. B. Ford and H. Corey were recorded by the California State Board of Agricultural to have participated in the Monterey County Fair Association (1878). Not only are broadsides rarely made of linen, this piece also contains illustrated brands and documents cattle rustling in California. An unusual and handsome find. The long legacy of farming and ranching associated with Monterey County makes this broadside a valuable piece of California history.

Pleaseant Lake, New York, 1900. Very Good. Quarto. Measuring 10" x 12". Leatherette papercovered boards with "Photographs" in gild on the front. Approximately 100pp. The album contains 220 gelatin silver photographs, most 3" x 4", tipped in and with about a third of the album pages empty. About very good with heavy wear at the edges with fraying, tears and some loss at the corner; interior photographs are generally fine. The album show a group of 20 or so well-to-do men and women engaged in a variety of outdoor activities including hunting, fishing, sailing, canoeing, and berry picking. The album begins with views of the local railroad station and many images of the group's large house in the woods (possibly a boarding house), along with log cabins, out buildings, a wood-planked path to the lake, the lake house, and dock. The surrounding forest is heavily featured. There are a number of interesting group photos showing members posing on rocks and logs or relaxing at their house and campsites. Many photos show successful hunters and fishermen/women proudly posing with their trophies and engaged in food preparation. Photos of the small train station show signs that read "Pleasant Lake" and one of the loosened photos of a fisherman has a Lausinburg, New York address on the reverse, confirming the images were taken in the Empire State. An attractive visual record of turn-of-the century outdoor leisure activities of wealthy New Yorkers.

[Photo Album]: Pompton Lakes, New Jersey and Early Automobiles

Pompton Lake, New Jersey, 1900. Near Fine. Large oblong octavo. String-tied flexible green boards with "Photographs" stamped in gilt on the front board measuring 7" x 10". A collection of 321 black and white and sepia toned gelatin silver photographs, measuring between 1" x 1.5" and 7" x 9.5", affixed to stiff gray paper and with some scattered captions. Photographs are near fine in a very good album with some waviness and edgewear. A family photo album of early snapshots beginning in 1900 from Pompton Lakes, New Jersey, as well as Long Beach and Buffalo, New York. The family appears to be upper middle class, seen here in fashionable clothing, in large houses, on numerous trips, and engaging in leisure activity. Photos show a man and a woman posing with tennis rackets, a child cavorting with a banjo, using it as a prop for everything except music, and one showing a Victorian woman with a snake wrapped around her. There are scenes of the lakes which include houseboats and people on small boats and kayak type vessels. Jocular posing appears throughout with fake punching, women falling off bicycles, and hijinks with various dogs. There are two early photo strips and photographs of people taking pictures with early box cameras. A spread of ten images captures a visit to the 1901 Pan-American Exhibition held in Buffalo including images of several Native Americans and the Temple of Music, where President McKinley was assassinated. Also mixed in are about a half dozen photos that show early open tiller-steered automobiles. An extensive and comprehensive look at amateur Victorian photography.

        Mimic War

New York: Edgar O. Clark, 1900. Fine. Complete set of twenty-five six inch chromolithographed cardboard soldiers nailed to their wooden stands, in the original box and with the original fold-up tent. The uniforms represent the Spanish-American War. Here is a cannoneer, with foot soldiers, a naval contingent and the requisite marching band. One soldier bears a resemblance to Roosevelt himself. We note only three creases on the twenty-five soldiers; otherwise they are in fine, as new condition, each securely nailed to their original wooden bases. The tent has had a minor repair to the tab which keeps it upright, with a few old pinholes there suggesting a pin was used to close it before the tab was repaired. Overall a fine set in its original box with the lithographed cover. The box does have a couple of tears and lacks a small piece of the lid flap on one end else it is in very good condition. Beginning about 1857, sets of toy solders were produced on strips or sheets, to be cut out and assembled by the purchaser. About 1890, though, a process was developed to adhere lithographs to board, then nailing the feet to a small wooden block, making for a sturdy play set. Though McLoughlin Bros. was the leader in cardboard toy soldiers, Sowdon and Clark (and after Sowdon's death, Edgar O. Clark alone) was practically the only small firm to surpass McLoughlin's quality. Sources suggest only a few sets were issued, making them significantly rarer than their McLoughlin counterparts.

Autograph Letter Signed, "Jph Conrad," to Doubleday representative James MacArthur

Pent Farm, Stanford near Hythe, 1900. 4 pp. pen and ink on folded sheet of personal stationery. 8vo. First page toned, horizontal fold. 4 pp. pen and ink on folded sheet of personal stationery. 8vo. Conrad writes to James MacArthur, representative of Lord Jim's American publisher Doubleday, McClure and Company, and a former editor of The Bookman (New York): "My dear McArthur [sic], I write in haste only to tell you how very sorry I am to hear to hear such painful news. I contemplated the prospect of a friendly intercourse between us with a great and intimate satisfaction. Let us hope the health of your wife improving will enable you to return here before long. I am not likely to let the memory grow cold. I knew you before I had seen you - you must remember. I am coming up on strict business with [publisher Sydney S.] Pawling on Thursday. I won't have time for lunch but I do hope to be able to shake your hand and say good bye - for a time only. Believe me, Always most sincerely yours, Jph. Conrad." Conrad's remark about knowing MacArthur before he had seen him alludes perhaps to MacArthur's favorable review of Almayer's Folly in the Bookman in 1895. Following his return to the States, MacArthur would take a position with Harper's, and would later correspond with and solicit material from Conrad.

Sister Carrie, The Financier, and the Titan [three first editions]

Original dark red cloth. Minute touchups to foot of spine, light fading to part of upper board. Very good. Cloth case FIRST EDITION of Dreiser's first and most important book. Sister Carrie is "a powerful account of a young working girl's rise to the 'tinsel and shine' of worldly success, and of the slow decline of her lover and protector Hurstwood. It was withheld from circulation by its publishers, who were apprehensive about Dreiser's frank and amoral treatment of Carrie's sexuality and ambition" (Drabble). After Harper and Brothers declined to print the novel, Dreiser approached Doubleday, Page, and Co., which had published another naturalist novel, Frank Norris's McTeague. Norris, an advisor for Doubleday, enthusiastically supported the publication of Sister Carrie. He later called it "the best novel I had read in M.S. since I had been reading for the firm." Based on Norris's praise, Walter Hines Page promised Dreiser that his firm would publish it. However, after reading the manuscript, Frank Doubleday objected that the novel was sordid. Dreiser insisted that Doubleday, Page was legally obligated to publish the book, so the firm proceeded, printing a mere 1000 copies and refusing to promote it. Only 456 copies were sold, and Dreiser received only $68.40 in royalties. This is a handsome copy, without cracked hinges and browned spine that typically plague this book. The only brighter copy we have seen in recent years, a copy with the spine ends recolored, was priced at $30,000. Modern Library 100 Best English-Language Novels of the 20th Century 33. [with] The Greatest American Business Novel DREISER, THEODORE. The Financier. New York: Harper, 1912. Original cloth and dust jacket. Some rubbing and edge wear to dust jacket with slight loss, long closed split to upper joint of dj. Spine slightly darkened. A very good copy, rare in this condition in dust jacket. FIRST EDITION. "The historic scope of his theme, the monumental architecture of his story, and the exhaustiveness of his documentation make The Financier the greatest business novel written in America of its time--and probably of all time" (Lingeman). This is the first book in Dreiser's Trilogy of Desire, comprising The Financier (1912), The Titan (1914), and The Stoic (1947, posthumous). The novels tell the story of the financier Frank Cowperwood, who is based on the life of American businessman Charles Tyson Yerkes. Cowperwood is a Philadelphia streetcar magnate, investor, and securities manipulator in the Gilded Age. "It is Dreiser's constant probing of the intertwined needs for money, art, glory, sex, and so much else that makes 'The Financier' the greatest of all American business novels" (Wall Street Journal, 2012). Provenance: contemporary signature of Kate Lang on front pastedown. [with] The Titan DREISER, THEODORE. The Titan. New York: John Lane, (1914). Original cloth and dust jacket. Slight chipping to dust jacket, one small repair to verso. An excellent copy. FIRST EDITION. The Titan is the second book in Dreiser's Trilogy of Desire, comprising The Financier (1912), The Titan (1914), and The Stoic (1947, posthumous). The novels tell the story of the financier Frank Cowperwood, who is based on the life of American businessman Charles Tyson Yerkes. Cowperwood is a Philadelphia streetcar magnate, investor, and securities manipulator in the Gilded Age. When Dreiser's publisher, Harper and Brothers, declined to publish the work because of Cowperwood's promiscuous sexuality, Dreiser moved to John Lane. "Although the trilogy is based on the life of Yerkes, readers have often identified the drive and aspirations of Cowperwood with Dreiser himself--particularly in the financier's love of beauty, his sexual appetites, and his will to power" (ANB). Very scarce in a collectible dust jacket.

[Autograph sentiment signed of Susan B. Anthony's Most Potent Phrase]

Rochester, NY, 1900. Clipped at the corners but very good and quite clear, mounted on card stock, with remnants of old mount on rear.. 1 clipped card. Signed, dated, and addressed by Susan B. Anthony (1820-1900) shortly after her eightieth birthday,"Perfect equality of rights for women - civil and political - should be the cry for everyone. Yours sincerely / Susan B. Anthony / 17 Madison Street / Rochester NY / July 1, 1900." Anthony used the first part of this sentiment, -"Perfect equality of rights for women - civil and political"- which was her favorite motto, for over thirty years, in albums and in many speeches, adding further phrases such as "is the demand of the National Woman Suffrage Association," or "is the demand of Susan B. Anthony." In fact, to James Garfield, she wrote "I know, if you had in your letter of acceptance, or in your New York speech, declared yourself in favor of "perfect equality of rights for women, civil and political," you would have touched an electric spark which would have fired the hearts of the women of the entire nation, and made the triumph of the Republican party more grand and glorious than any it ever has seen." (Sept. 9, 1880). We could not locate any other use of the additional phrase "should be the cry for everyone" in any of the archives of her writings and manuscripts. Harper: Life and Work of Susan B. Anthony, Vol. 2: pp. 522, 859.

[Photo Album]: Canadian Ranch and Trip to Europe

1900. Near Fine. Large oblong quarto measuring 10" x 11.5". Red pebbled cloth with gilt edges and "photographs" stamped in gilt on the front board. A collection of 111 black and white or sepia-toned gelatin silver snap shot photographs affixed to white cardboard pages, with a few loose photos laid in. Photographs are about near fine with some creasing in a very good album with edgewear and spotting. A photo album featuring a large amount (approximately half) of the images set on a Canadian ranch in the late 1880s or early 1890s. The images include the stables, what appears to be someone operating on a sick (or possibly dead) horse, ranch hands in full "cowboy" dress complete with hat and lasso atop their horses, breaking horses, as well as trick riding, and one amusing photo of a man, a dog, and a hose. One particularly wonderful photograph shows a bucking horse with a rider. The album also contains a parade in Quebec City with hundreds of people lining the road and several photos of building and two photos showing the town circa 1880. The latter part of the album show images from a trip to Europe with town of Lourdes in Southern France, include the old fort and the National Shrine Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes. Also show are various images of the Alps along with stagecoaches, glaciers, Matterhorn, and mountain goats can be seen. A few photos show the St. Gotthard tunnel entrance, the third largest road tunnel in the world, under construction, it was completed in 1881. A fascinating look at life on a Canadian ranch as well as an excursion to Europe for a mix or business and pleasure.

Photo Album]: S.S. Bremen, Paris and London

Paris, London 1900 - Oblong small quarto measuring 7" x 11". String-tied olive cloth over paper boards with "Paris 1907 London" printed on the front board. Contains 51 sepia toned gelatin silver photographs with some captions measuring between 2" x 3" and 4.5" x 6.5" affixed to stiff black paper. A good album with loose pages, toning, and lifting cloth with near fine photographs.A photo album kept of a transatlantic journey on the German vessel S.S. Bremen which made stops in Paris and London before returning to the United States in 1905. The vessel built in 1896 was part of the Hamburg America Line and used the same route as the Titanic would a few years later. The album shows many of the crew and passengers posing around the ship with photos of crew members lounging and reading on the upper deck, crew members posing with a woman, and other vessels they passed on the water. Once in Paris the photographs show the streets and crowds of the city. Roughly ten photos show the group at a horse race presumably the Paris Grand Prix at Longchamp with photos of the stands and the crowd in beautiful dresses, huge feathered hats, and men in tuxes. Created by the Societe d'Encouragement in 1863, the Paris Grand Prix was the leading "flat race" showcasing the "best home-bred three-year-olds" until it was surpassed in 1920 when the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe began. After Paris the company stopped in London shown here in photographs of cobblestone streets and busy town centers before returning to the Bremen and returning home. It is assumed that the photo album was put together later than the trip as the book reads "1907" while the few captions that are present read "1905."An interesting look at sea travel and upper middle class events during the early 1900s.

Poems for Pictures And for Notes of Music.

London: John Macqueen, 1900 - Octavo. Original cloth, titles to spine and front in black, florally patterned endpapers. Spine tanned, ends and corners a little rubbed, cloth somewhat marked and dust soiled, hinges a little tender, some light tanning around endpapers but otherwise internally fresh, a very good copy. First edition, sole impression, of this rare early poetry collection by Ford Madox Hueffer (1873-1939, from 1919 known as Ford Madox Ford). We have never handled another, and can only trace one appearance at auction, in 1938, when a copy inscribed by Ford to T. Watts-Dunton appeared in the Anderson Galleries sale of The Modern Library of Robert Dunning Dripps. This copy was accompanied by a letter which quoted Ford himself having claimed that there were only 17 copies in existence. Institutional records show 5 copies in the UK and 10 in the USA, leaving, if Ford's assessment of rarity is to be credited, precious few in private hands. The printed dedication is to Edward Garnett. A second series of Poems for Pictures was published in 1904, entitled The Face of the Night, which appears to be somewhat more common. [Attributes: First Edition]
