Lisbon, Miguel Manescal da Costa, 1762. Folio (30 x 20.5 cm). With 21 engraved plates (1 folding), 1 nearly full-page engraving of a compass rose and about 10 woodcut diagrams in the text. Contemporary or near contemporary tanned sheepskin, richly gold-tooled spine, new endpapers.

Borba de Moraes, p. 672; Rodrigues 1899 note; Sabin 62883 note; cf. Bosch 144. Third edition of a detailed Portuguese handbook of navigation, primarily concerned with navigation in the Portuguese colonies and former colonies in America (including Brazil), Africa and the East and West Indies. It includes 18 numbered plates containing 36 nautical charts, maps of islands, city plans, etc., most from these regions, and unnumbered 3 plates (1 folding) showing instruments (quadrants, sundials, etc.). The author's father Luís Serrão Pimentel (1613-1679) wrote a handbook of navigation in 1673, but it remained in manuscript until Manuel Pimentel (1660-1719) published it posthumously in 1681. This and his 1699 revised edition were shorter than the present work and had only 2 plates. In 1712, however, Pimentel greatly expanded it and added numerous plates, bringing the book more or less to its present form. With bookplate. Some marginal tears and worm holes restored in the foot margin at the beginning and end, but otherwise in very good condition. Somewhat worn at the hinges and with some scratches on the back board, but binding otherwise very good. A practical Portuguese handbook of navigation that remained a standard work into the early 19th-century.

The Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser (facsimile edition limited to 100 copies, 1899)

Reproduced by authority of the Trustees of the Public Library of New South Wales, 1899. Angus & Robertson, 1899. Folio, half-crushed morocco over cloth (a few marks), lettered in gilt to the spine, bookplate from the W. R. Griffiths collection to front pastedown, unpaginated, foxing to edges, photo-lithographed by Vincent Brooks, Day & Sons of London. Limited to 100 numbered copies. Scarce. The Sydney Gazette was first printed by George Howe on a small wooden printing press which had been brought to the colony by Arthur Phillip in the First Fleet. George Howe had used the same press to print the colony's first book, The New South Wales General Standing Orders, in 1802, probably confirming him as the colony's second printer (after George Hughes). The establishment of a weekly newspaper in the colony had been an initiative of Governor King, and the publication originally acted as a medium for broadcasting official information about such matters as government proclamations, new civil regulations and court news. The content of the newspaper was under strict government censorship. The newspaper also recorded on a weekly basis all the recent maritime activity at Port Jackson, including shipping arrivals and departures and cargo information. Auctions of goods, sales of land, personal and business notices, and lists of newly pardoned or emancipated convicts were also features of each issue. ‘The importance of the Sydney Gazette as a source of Australian history cannot be over-stated’ (Ferguson, ibid.). As primary documents of early colonial history the issues of the Gazette are unrivalled as a record of important events and daily life. As original examples of The Sydney Gazette were very rare, even in the nineteenth century, this high quality photo-lithographed facsimile was commissioned by the Public Library of New South Wales. Even this is now scarce today, and the Library issued another facsimile in the 1960s. Ferguson 16543 (with a long note concerning its production).

[Wrapper-title:] Collection complète des oiseaux d'Europe, dessinés et coloriés d'après nature.[Wrappers:] Amiens, printed by R. Machart, 183[3]. 4to. With 87 fine hand-coloured lithographed plates, and 11 descriptive letterpress double-leaves. Loose as issued, with original publisher's letterpress printed wrappers for 1 fascicle loosely inserted, front and back with a decorative border built up from fleurons, the front with a woodcut vignette of a bird, and the number of the fascicle ("4me"), the month ("Avril") and last digit in the date ("3") added in manuscript. The back wrapper with a lengthy note on the publication, and the name of the printer. In modern clam-shell box.

Bradley Martin sale, item 1899; Fine Bird Books 110 (misinterpreting Nissen and stating that 400 plates were issued); Nissen, IVB 910 (32 plates only); Nissen, SVB 488 (idem); Quérard, La france littéraire, vol. 9, p. 299; Ronsil 2851 (32 plates only); WorldCat (2 copies); not in Ayer; Wood. Extremely rare and unfinished series of fine ornithological plates, lithographed by A. Leprince after Edouard Swagers and published in fascicles. As stated on the wrappers, the work was intended to reach no fewer than 50 fascicles, each with 8 plates, of which only a limited number was actually issued. The bibliographer Quérard believed that only the first 4 parts were published, with a total of 32 plates and 12 letterpress leaves, as did both Nissen and Ronsil. As is evident from the Bradley Martin copy, however, at least 12 fascicles with a total of 96 plates were issued. Though the Martin copy lacked the wrappers, it was probably the most complete copy extant, and, in fact, the only copy to have come on the market in the last decades (auctioned in 1989 and again in 1990).Our copy includes the wrappers of one fascicle, containing the title and an extensive description of the project, and 11 fascicles, each with a letterpress double-leaf and a total of 87 plates (lacking the "Chouette effraie"). The birds are arranged by diet, showing birds of prey (42), omnivores (17) and insectivores (28). They were drawn from specimens in the collection of Delahaye, curator of the library of Amiens.Little is known about Swagers. On the back wrapper he styles himself "professeur de dessin, à Amiens" and mentions that he will shortly also publish a series of plates of exotic birds, drawn from specimens in the Cabinet d'histoire naturelle, Paris. Apparently this project was never realised. Some spotting, wrappers tattered, otherwise in very good condition.

Wrapper-title:] Collection complète des oiseaux d'Europe, dessinés et coloriés d'après nature.[Wrappers:] Amiens, printed by R.

      - Bradley Martin sale, item 1899; Fine Bird Books 110 (misinterpreting Nissen and stating that 400 plates were issued); Nissen, IVB 910 (32 plates only); Nissen, SVB 488 (idem); Quérard, La france littéraire, vol. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

A THOUSAND DAYS IN THE ARCTIC: With Preface by Admiral Sir F Leopold McClintock

Harper & Brothers, 1899. Cloth. Good. 1st Edition: Vol I xxi, 551pp, Vol II xxii-xv, 580pp. Appendices, indices. Illustrated throughout with over one hundred eighty black & white drawings, plates, 5 maps. Matched set. Original blue cloth over boards with gilt decorative devices to front cover, gilt titling to spine and front covers, top edges gilt. A day-by-day journal of the Jackson-Harmsworth Expedition (1894-97). The party established winter quarters at Cape Flora, Franz Joseph Land, and remained there for 3 years. By sheer coincidence, Fridtjof Nansen and Hjalmar Johansen encountered Jackson's camp in June of 1896 during the Fram Expedition, and enjoyed several weeks of generous hospitality (after surviving through the winter on walrus and bear meat). Throughout their stay, the party made sledge journeys in the archipelago, surveyed, made scientific collections, hunted, and described the polar night. Includes a chapter on scurvy. [AB 7943]. "This is an unvarnished tale of a thousand consecutive days spent in the Arctic, printed almost word for word as it was written--while the facts and impressions were fresh in my memory--in our hut, or tent, when on sledging and boating journeys in Franz-Josef Land. It is a simple, true account and statement of facts incident to our life and work there--plain facts, penned by a plain man." (from the author's note). A very important title in early arctic exploration. Shelfware, corners bumped, chipping to spines, some small splits to spines. Moderate foxing, tear to 2 of the 5 folding maps, all maps fragile, staining to creases as expected. An original set, now very difficult to find with the original bindings. Good.         L'Ermitage - Revue artistique et littéraire Année complète 1899 EDITION ORIGINALE

Paris: Bureaux de la Revue, 1899. Fine. Bureaux de la Revue, Paris 1899, 11,5x18,5cm, 2 volumes reliés. - Originale.binding editor to bradel half dark green calico, smooth back, as part of black morocco, gilt small iron and double gold in net queue.Douze numbers from January to December 1899. conservées.Chaque number Covers Edition is illustrated with a literary xylographie.Contributions Paul Fort, Henri Ghéon, André Gide, Francis Jammes, René Boylesve, etc.Publication founded in 1890 by Henri Mazel, the Hermitage is a monthly magazine owned by the first wave of little magazines Symbolists. In 1895, the magazine between declining and its new director, Edouard Ducoté, uses André Gide. The editorial team is reduced to twelve regular contributors, friends Gide. After many difficulties and attempts to overhaul the editorial team (Remy de Gourmont to make a pass and will also contribute financially in 1905), the Hermitage breathed his last in 1906. The Hermitage manages to detach other important magazines of the time as the Mercure de France or La Revue blanche because it boasts eclectic and apolitical; on its cover, you can also read that it is "the only journal that deals with politics or sociology [but] which deals only with literature and art." His illustrations are small art nouveau, and, true to his state of mind symbolist, employees are more interested in poetry than novel. Tiphaine Samoyault, French literary critic, says that the Hermitage expresses a transition straddles the fin de siècle aestheticism and poetry avant-garde of the 1910s. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information! - [FRENCH VERSION FOLLOWS] Edition originale.
