        The River War

This is a superlative jacketed copy of the rarest reprint of The River War. Churchill's second book, originally published in 1899, recounts his experiences and reflections concerning British involvement in the Sudan. The text is arresting, insightful, powerfully descriptive, and of enduring relevance. As a young officer in a colonial British army, Churchill was unusually sympathetic to the Mahdist forces and critical of the British army. This work offers us the candid perspective of the future great man of the 20th century from the distinctly 19th century battlefields where Churchill learned to write and earned his early fame. In 1933, a so-called "Second Cheap Edition" was made from plates of the 1902 edition with a bibliographically significant new introduction by the author explaining that "A generation has grown up which knows little of why we are in Egypt and the Sudan." There were ultimately five printings of this edition. All are now highly sought in the original dust jackets, but most scarce is the dust jacket for this 1940 printing - the only wartime printing. The dust jacket is unique to this printing. Survival rate for these jackets is quite low, likely owing to the thin, white paper on which they were printed. The condition of this jacket is the very best we have ever seen, with a fine book beneath. The pale purple binding is bright and clean with square corners and just a little discoloration at the base of the spine corresponding to a small chip in the dust jacket. The contents are crisp, clean, bright, and tight with no spotting. There is a single inked owner inscription in beautiful script dated "July 18, 1942" on the front pastedown. The dust jacket is a treat - unclipped, bright, and with only trivial wear. Losses are confined to trivial corner wear with the exception of a .25 inch chip at the lower rear hinge. Two 1 inch closed tears are located at the upper rear hinge and at the rear flap fold. Very light soiling to the white panels. Overall a truly superior jacketed example of this scarce and fragile edition. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover.

        The River War

This is the first one-volume edition of Churchill's second book. It was originally published as a two-volume edition in 1899. In 1902 Churchill (by then a new member of Parliament) revised and abridged his text, excising much of the criticism of Kitchener for political reasons. There is also a new Preface. *All* of the many subsequent editions of The River War are based on this 1902 abridged and revised text. Mohammed Ahmed was a messianic Islamic leader in central and northern Sudan in the final decades of the 19th century. Claiming that Allah had selected him as the true Mahdi, he found fertile political ground in the resentment of the inhabitants toward the corruption and oppression by Egyptian rulers who had long dominated the region. Economic and political problems in Egypt further strengthened the Mahdi's hand, enabling the Mahdi's forces and followers to occupy most of the Sudan. In 1883 the Mahdists overwhelmed the Egyptian army of British commander William Hicks, and Great Britain ordered the withdrawal of all Egyptian troops and officials from the Sudan. In 1885, General Gordon famously lost his life in a doomed defence of the capitol, Khartoum, where he had been sent to lead evacuation of Egyptian forces. Though the Mahdi died in 1895, his theocracy continued until 1898, when General Kitchener reoccupied the Sudan. With Kitchener was a very young Winston Churchill, who would participate in the battle of Omdurman in September 1898, where the Mahdist forces were decisively defeated. In this book about the British campaign in the Sudan, Churchill was unusually sympathetic to the Mahdist forces and critical of Imperial cynicism and cruelty. The text is arresting, insightful, powerfully descriptive, and of enduring relevance. This book offers us the candid perspective of the future great man of the 20th century in a distinctly 19th century world. Here is a chief architect of the Second World War involved in what has been called by some the last "genuine" cavalry charge of the British army. Because it was significantly revised and because all subsequent editions to date are based on this text, this 1902 first abridged and revised edition is as important and desirable as any in the Churchill canon. This first one-volume edition had only a single printing of just 1,003 copies, and so is considerably more scarce than the first edition. This edition has the same distinctive gilt decoration of the Mahdi's Tomb and gunboat as the first edition, but is bound in red cloth. Offered here is a very good+ copy. The red cloth binding is clean, tight, and square with sharp corners and only trivial wear to extremities. The boards are bright and clean with strong, even red color and very bright gilt on the front cover. The spine cloth is lightly sunned with some wrinkling at the head and tail, but retains strong gilt, even red color, and very good shelf appearance. The contents are bright and tight. The original black endpapers are intact and in perfect condition. The protective tissue cover at the frontispiece is intact, as are all of the extensive maps and plans. Spotting proved endemic to this edition. Here modest spotting is substantially confined to the prelims and the text block edges. Overall an excellent example of a scarce and desirable edition.

This is a set of the seven volumes of Bernhard Geiser and Brigitte Baer's monumental catalogue raisonné of Pablo Picasso's graphic work that contains illustrated entries for each of two thousand and twenty-four engravings and monotypes executed by the master between 1899 and 1972. Six of these (I, III - VII) are in the uniform cloth in illustrated dust jacket binding format published by Editions Kornfeld between 1985 and 1996, while Volume II is from the original 1968 Klipstein & Kornfeld first printing bound in wrappers.
