The Story of the Malakand Field Force: An Episode of Frontier War

London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1899. Hardcover. Very good. This is Churchill's first book, based on his exploits with Sir Bindon Blood's expedition on the Northwest Frontier of India in 1897. While Churchill had previously applied his pen as a published correspondent, this was his first book-length work and he clearly labored over it: "I have discovered a great power of application which I did not think I possessed. For two months I have worked not less than five hours a day." Publication of the first edition of 1898 was arranged by Churchill's cousin while the author was still in India, resulting in numerous spelling and detail errors. Churchill was incensed by the errors and acted with haste to address them. Hence later states of the first edition bear errata slips. A second edition - this Silver Library edition - was the first to incorporate the author's corrections in the text and was printed only a year later, in 1899. Here is the first Silver Library edition, first printing - one of just 1,440 copies. Being the first edition to incorporate the author's extensive corrections makes this an important and highly collectable edition. Unfortunately, the maroon boards proved highly susceptible to fading, the paper easily browned and the binding often loosens. Here is a very good+ copy for collectors. The maroon binding is clean and unfaded, showing only light wear at the spine ends and hinges. Significantly, the spine retains deep, unfaded color and bright gilt. The contents are lightly toned as inevitable with this edition, but otherwise clean. All maps are intact and properly folded. Both the frontispiece and original tissue guard are likewise intact, as are the original, distinctive swan and ship endpapers. There is no spotting. The half title bears an inked owners name and a small ink stamp with what is presumed to be owner's address "60 Kingsley Road, King's Norton, Birmingham". A collector-worthy copy of the first printing of this rare and important edition. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A1.3.a, Woods/ICS A1(ba.1), Langworth p.20.

The River War, An Historical Account of the Reconquest of the Soudan

London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1899. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. Near fine. This is a collector-grade copy of the first edition, first printing of Churchill's second book, his last to be published in England in the 19th Century. This first edition is notable for a number of reasons. First, aesthetically it is lavish and striking; the large, weighty volumes are beautifully decorated with gilt representations of the Mahdi's tomb on the spines and a gunboat on the front covers. Second, from a collector's standpoint it is scarce; the publisher released only 2,646 copies of this beautiful edition, and this number includes both second and third printings. Third, bibliographically it is notable that this first edition is the *only* unabridged edition printed to this day. In 1902 Churchill (then a new member of Parliament) revised and abridged his text, excising much of the criticism of Kitchener for political reasons. All of the many subsequent editions of The River War are based on this 1902 abridged and revised text. Last but not least, the text is arresting, insightful, powerfully descriptive, and of enduring relevance. As a young officer in a colonial British army, Churchill is unusually sympathetic to the Mahdist forces and critical of the British army. This work offers us the candid perspective of the future great man of the 20th century from the distinctly 19th century battlefields where Churchill learned to write and earned his early fame. Here is a chief architect of the Second World War involved in what has been called by some the last "genuine" cavalry charge of the British army. This first edition is as important and desirable as any in the Churchill canon. Offered here is a collector-grade first printing set. The bindings of both volumes are unusually clean, with bright gilt, sharp corners, and only trivial shelf wear. Spine presentation is superior. Both volumes show some of the usual wrinkling at the spine ends, but both the color and gilt remain excellent. Unlike many copies, this set is entirely original, having suffered no restoration or repair. The contents of both volumes are truly noteworthy - unusually bright and clean, not just internally, but on the text block edges as well. The spotting endemic to this edition is absent here. Moreover, the contents remain tight in the bindings, with none of the typical splits or gutter breaks detected. The original black endpapers are present, as are all maps, plans, and illustrations, including the tissue guards at each frontispiece. The sole interior flaw detected is a 1.5 inch diameter brown stain on the tissue paper guard at the Volume II frontispiece. Both books have removable protective mylar covers.         The River War

London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1899. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Here is a finely bound first edition, first printing of Churchill's second book. This first edition is notable for a number of reasons. First, aesthetically it is lavish, each of the two large volumes printed on heavy paper with a profusion of illustrations, maps, and plans. Second, from a collector's standpoint it is scarce; the publisher released only 2,646 copies of this beautiful edition, and this number includes both second and third printings. Third, bibliographically it is notable that this first edition is the *only* unabridged edition printed to this day. In 1902 Churchill (now a new member of Parliament) revised and abridged his text, excising much of the criticism of Kitchener for political reasons. These books offer us the candid perspective of the future great man of the 20th century in a distinctly 19th century world. Here is a chief architect of the Second World War involved in what has been called by some the last "genuine" cavalry charge of the British army. This work and in particular this edition is as important and desirable as any in the Churchill canon. This first printing set features unusually clean contents finely bound by Bayntun in dark green half morocco over khaki cloth boards with marbled endpapers and gilt top edges. The bindings feature gilt decorated raised spine bands, gilt ruled spine compartments and gilt rule transitions. The bindings remain square and tight with sharp corners and are about very good overall, with some scuffing to the cloth boards, trivial wear at extremities, and discrete 1.5 inch splits at the lower rear Volume I hinge and upper front Volume II hinge. The contents are notably bright, clean, and crisp for this edition. We note only a few, trivial instances of spotting within and on the fore edges. All illustrations, maps, and plans are present and pristine, as are the frontispiece tissue guards. During careful collation we noted the oval ink stamp of "Royal Scottish Geographical Society" discretely applied to the verso of a few of the Volume I folding maps and the verso of a single Volume II folding map. We find no other previous ownership marks. Bibliographic reference; Cohen A2.1.b, Woods/ICS A2(a.1), Langworth p.29.

Howard Weeden Huntsville: Howard Weeden, 1899. First edition. Cloth. Near Fine. First edition. Wide octavo. Photo frontis. Illustrated by the author. PRESENTATION COPY Inscribed by the author on the second front endpaper. A two page handwritten letter by Weeden tipped in to rear of book. Also, laid in to the book is a small booklet (single sheet, folded twice to form a six pp booklet) promoting this title with three pages devoted to an appreciation of the book and author by Joel Chandler Harris (of Uncle Remus fame). Mild soiling to front cover; an especially nice copy of this title in decorated white cloth binding. No mention of the M. Stolz imprint; this appears to be a special self published edition with 1898 on the copyright page and 1899 on the title page. Remnants of the extremely fragile cello dustwrapper present as well.

        A Texas Ranger

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1899. x, [2], 321p. Perhaps the best account of the Texas Rangers in the 1870's (Basic Texas Books, p. 280ff) and in Fifty Texas Rarities. The author who was a reporter rode with those Rangers serving under L. H. McNelly, 1874-78 and in the reissue of the book by J. Frank Dobie some 31 years later, Dobie says the book clearly was based on Jennings own first hand observations or the interview at the time with eyewitnesses. Besides dealing with John Wesley Hardin and King Fisher, it deals with the Taylor-Sutton feudWhile some today would be offended from his account of the Mexican raiders (which to his point of view was to their disadvantage since the Rangers markmanship was far superior). This is as nice a copy that possibly exists on today's market. Howes J100; Adams 150, #85 Graff 2208; Basic Texas Books #107; 6-Guns 1173. . Decorative Cloth Hard Cover. Near Fine. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Ekonomicheskie etyudy i stati. [i.e. Economic Studies and Essays].

S.-Petersburg, 1899 [recte October 1898]. 8vo. Later half cloth binding with red leather title-label to spine. Leaves a bit frayed at edges. Old bookseller's stamp to title-page. (4), 290 pp.. Very rare first edition of Lenin's first published book, the seminal miscellany of his economic papers, which constitute the first outline of his revolutionary ideas. The work consists in five economic essays/studies, four of which are published here for the first time ("The Handicraft Census of 1894-95 in Perm Gubernia and General Problems of "Handicraft" Industry"; "Gems of Narodnik Project-Mongering"; "The Heritage We Renounce" - all three written in exile in 1897 - and "On the Question of Our Factory Statistics", written in 1898), and one of which ("A Characterisation of Economic Romanticism") had been published the previous year, in installments, in the magazine Novoye Slovo, April-July 1897. Before the present publication, only very few of Lenin's papers and articles had been published, and none of them in book form. The present publication brings to light Lenin's elaboration of the tasks of the Russian Marxists (both as to their programme, their tactics, and the organization as such) ("The Heritage We Renounce") and gives us the basis for his take on Marxism. Much of the original material published here was used by Lenin, both directly (e.g. the "Handicraft Census") and indirEctly (forming a basis for the work) in his later published book "The Development of Capitalim in Russia" (1899), which established his reputation as a Marxist theorist. Furthermore, the present publication constitutes Lenin's earliest economic writings directed against the Narodniks. As a whole, the present publication gives us the first rounded picture of Leninist thought and provides us with the basis for Leninist economics and politics. That which Lenin develops in the present studies and essays form the basis for the capitalist and Marxist thought that he is later to present and which becomes the standard introduction to the Russian economy for later generations of Marxists. The work is of great scarcity and was presumably printed in very small numbers

        ORIENTATIONS

1899. Colonial Edition. London: T. Fisher Unwin, 1899. Original olive green cloth. First Edition, colonial issue, of Maugham's third book -- following LIZA OF LAMBETH and THE MAKING OF A SAINT. It is his first collection of short stories (six), one of which ("The Punctiliousness of Don Sebastian") had been his first story to appear in print (in the October 1898 issue of Cosmopolis)~-- a magazine that followed the peculiar practice of printing its texts one-third in English, one-third in French, and one-third in Spanish. "The idea is that it would thus find readers in all three countries," Maugham said. "Unfortunately it found readers in none." [Morgan]~ORIENTATIONS was published as a volume in Unwin's six-shilling Green Cloth Library, just like Joseph Conrad's first two books. 2000 copies were printed, but that includes copies for the colonial library (like this one) and many that were remaindered. This copy reads "Unwin's Colonial Library" at the foot of the spine, lists 61 volumes in that library (this being #60) on the half-title verso, and mentions the "Colonial edition" on the title page.~Condition is very good, a bit rubbed at the binding extremities, with some foxing just on the endpapers. The front endpaper bears a personal inkstamp whose last name (van der Byl) suggests that this copy went to the colony in Rhodesia. This colonial edition is curiously scarce; Toole Stott suggests that some of the colonial copies were re-directed to the domestic market, minus their half-titles. Toole Stott A3a.
