        ORIENTATIONS

1899. Colonial Edition. London: T. Fisher Unwin, 1899. Original olive green cloth. First Edition, colonial issue, of Maugham's third book -- following LIZA OF LAMBETH and THE MAKING OF A SAINT. It is his first collection of short stories (six), one of which ("The Punctiliousness of Don Sebastian") had been his first story to appear in print (in the October 1898 issue of Cosmopolis)~-- a magazine that followed the peculiar practice of printing its texts one-third in English, one-third in French, and one-third in Spanish. "The idea is that it would thus find readers in all three countries," Maugham said. "Unfortunately it found readers in none." [Morgan]~ORIENTATIONS was published as a volume in Unwin's six-shilling Green Cloth Library, just like Joseph Conrad's first two books. 2000 copies were printed, but that includes copies for the colonial library (like this one) and many that were remaindered. This copy reads "Unwin's Colonial Library" at the foot of the spine, lists 61 volumes in that library (this being #60) on the half-title verso, and mentions the "Colonial edition" on the title page.~Condition is very good, a bit rubbed at the binding extremities, with some foxing just on the endpapers. The front endpaper bears a personal inkstamp whose last name (van der Byl) suggests that this copy went to the colony in Rhodesia. This colonial edition is curiously scarce; Toole Stott suggests that some of the colonial copies were re-directed to the domestic market, minus their half-titles. Toole Stott A3a.

This is a charming original watercolor by Maud Humphrey used on the cover (and also inside) of Gallant Little Patriots published by Frederick Stokes in 1899 as well as inside Little Heros & Heroines also published by Stokes in 1899.       Melbourne,, 1899.. Brass medal, 31 mm. diameter, a little tarnished, small punch to upper rim for threading, good condition. Commemorative medal celebrating the voyages of Captain Cook, struck for the Greater Britain Exhibition held in Melbourne during 1888-89. Attracting an estimated two million visitors over two years, the Melbourne Exhibition of 1888-89 celebrated the wealth and optimism of the colony, with displays from over 40 countries.Klenman notes that the medal was actually struck on site at the exhibition in a special display booth, and then sold as a souvenir. The medal celebrates both the discovery of the east coast of Australia, and the independence of Victoria from New South Wales (the obverse reads 'Captain Cook Landed 1770. Victoria Separate Colony 1851'). This example has been punched for threading and use as a pendant.Klenman, 13.

        The River War

This is a superlative copy of the rare wartime reprint of The River War, bearing the original dust jacket. Churchill's second book, originally published in 1899, recounts his experiences and reflections concerning British involvement in the Sudan. The text is arresting, insightful, powerfully descriptive, and of enduring relevance. As a young officer in a colonial British army, Churchill was unusually sympathetic to the Mahdist forces and critical of the British army. This work offers us the candid perspective of the future great man of the 20th century from the distinctly 19th century battlefields where Churchill learned to write and earned his early fame. In 1933, a so-called "Second Cheap Edition" was made from plates of the 1902 edition with a bibliographically significant new introduction by the author explaining that "A generation has grown up which knows little of why we are in Egypt and the Sudan." There were ultimately five printings of this edition. All are now highly sought in collector-worthy condition, particularly when accompanied by the original dust jackets.  Most scarce is the dust jacket for this 1940 printing - the only wartime printing and bearing a dust jacket unique to this printing. Survival rate for these jackets is quite low, likely owing to the thin, white paper on which they were printed.  It is not only the dust jackets that proved fragile.  The books beneath were bound in a coarse, lilac cloth that proved highly susceptible to soiling, fading, and wear and the contents to spotting and toning.  Here is a truly fine example of the book in an original dust jacket.  The lilac cloth binding is square, clean, and tight with sharp corners and virtually no wear.  The contents are immaculate - crisp, bright, and tight with no spotting and no previous ownership marks.  The page edges show no age-toning.  A trivial hint of dust soiling to the top edge is the only flaw noted.  Copies thus are quite rare.  The dust jacket, having done its job protecting the lovely book beneath, has suffered a bit from age, mostly in the form of losses along the top edge.  The illustrated front face - the unique feature of this dust jacket - is substantially complete with triangular losses at the upper corners to a maximum depth of one inch at the upper front.  Spine presentation is also quite respectable, with irregular loss to a maximum depth of .5 inch at the head.  The largest loss is to the blank rear face - an irregular 4.25 inch x 2 inch loss at the upper edge.  We have fitted beneath this jacket a color photocopy of a complete example which visually fills the losses.  Of course the color copy beneath is not adhered to the original jacket and is removable.  Both the original jacket and copy beneath are protected beneath a removable, archival quality clear cover.         McTEAGUE

1899. A Story of San Francisco. New York: Doubleday & McClure Co., 1899. 4 pp undated ads. Original red cloth decorated in white. First Edition (with the title page in a three-panel single line border, and with "moment" the last word on p. 106; copies of the revised second printing unfortunately get mistaken as first editions). This copy is in the third and usual state, with the signature-25 in proper sequence (some copies got out with an error).~Frank Norris's masterpiece is McTEAGUE. It is the most purely Zola-esque novel in English, with its cold, careful study of the growing devastation wrought by miserliness on the lives of the Polk Street dentist and his wife. As a motion picture, under the name of "Greed," it was almost equally effective, and gave Zasu Pitts almost her only opportunity as a tragedian. [K&H]~Though the tale's end has been criticized as melodramatic, it is not easy to forget the final scene in which McTeague, fleeing after murdering his wife, stands handcuffed in Death Valley to the pursuer whom he has just killed -- awaiting starvation.~McTEAGUE was bound in red cloth that unfortunately was stamped in white pigment rather than gilt. This white pigment has proven, over the past century, to flake away notoriously: most copies now are missing much of this stamping, and many have spines that have become totally illegible. This copy is an unusual survivor, with all of the white pigment present; the volume is near-fine, with little external wear or soil; there is a faint shadow on the title page from a once-inserted slip of (most likely) newspaper. McTEAGUE is rather scarce in this condition. Blanck 15031; McElrath A3.1.a.1; a Johnson High Spot.
