        The Rough Riders

New York:: Charles Scribner's Sons,, 1899. . A Fine copy in a contemporary blue leather binding, gilt stamped spine and front cover with marbled endpapers. After the American Civil War, the United States Army was weakened and left with little manpower when a call for Cuban independence from Spain arose. As a result, President William McKinley called upon 1,250 volunteers to assist in the war efforts. Roosevelt's Rough Riders is the name bestowed on the 1st United States Volunteer Cavalry, one of three such regiments raised in 1898 for the Spanish-American War and the only one of the three to see action. Colonel Roosevelt and the Rough Riders played a key role in the outcome of the Spanish-American war by serving as the catalyst with other American units on constricting the ring around the city of Santiago. The ultimate goal of capturing San Juan Hill was from that strategic position to move downhill and take Santiago de Cuba, a strong point for the Spanish army. Theodore Roosevelt has written a compelling history of the Rough Riders including his personal involvement with the unit. .

Was a particularly controversial and significant war, partially because the British pursued the policy of rounding up and isolating the Boer civilian population in concentration camps, which was one of the earliest uses of this method by modern powers.       Indianapolis & Kansas City: The Bowen-Merrill Co., 1899. First Edition. Hardcover. Paper split on the front hinge of the signed volume but the cover is tight. Dampstaining to the upper right blank margin of the text to varying degrees to about half of the first volume, none to the second. Covers of both volumes with some old, rather faint staining. Overall Very Good with a fine inscription. The first two volumes of three, with the last not published until 1908. Original green cloth with a gilt portrait on the front covers and gilt lettering on the spines. Illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of Anthony and other plates and facsimiles. This copy is INSCRIBED and SIGNED in the first volume by the subject on the front endpaper: "To Mrs. Grace Bartholomew/Pioneer -- Michigan/I present these volumes because/of dear Mr. D. A. Blodgetts purchasing/so many Histories of Woman Suffrage to/give to his friends -- therefore please/accept these for his sake -- & oblige/Yours very sincerely/Susan B. Anthony/Rochester N.Y./Nov. 5, 1904." In a 1903 letter to Dodd Mead & Co., Harper detailed the unsatisfactory arrangement she and Anthony had with Bowen-Merrill. According to her there were only 225 bound copies and 858 unbound sets of sheets of the first edition. "As Miss Anthony is not likely to live very long, being over 83 and very feeble, she and I both thought it would be better for me to purchase her rights in the book, and I have done so, and am now sole owner of it.

        La Banlieue de Paris

Paris: Pierre Seghers. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Very Good. FIRST EDITION, the preferred Seghers issue with the famous dust jacket, SIGNED BY BOTH CENDRARS AND DOISNEAU and inscribed by Cendrars to the celebrated French artist Maurice Brianchon. "Although the soft gray tones of the gravures here tend to give even the bleakest images a romantic cast, the grim austerity of the landscapes is strikingly modern. In a city still recovering from the war, Doisneau managed to find plenty of subjects for the sprightly social observation that would come to define his work." The iconic dust jacket "is a subtly disconcerting collage of three separate images. In the foreground, a wall of squat, featureless apartment blocks rises behind a continuous row of tiny figures standing on a ridge -- observers, you'll discover on a double-page spread inside, of a bicycle race through an eroded quarry in Gentilly, the Paris suburb where many of Doisneau's pictures were taken. Rising above this scene, and entirely out of place, is the Eiffel Tower, isolated dramatically before yet another photo of a sky filled with foamy clouds" (Roth, The Book of 101 Books). Roth 101. Parr/Badger Vol I. With 130 photos by Doisneau and text by Cendrars. Provenance: With inscription by Cendrars to Maurice Brianchon (and signed beneath the inscription by Doisneau); Brianchon (1899-1979) was an internationally renowned painter, set designer, and illustrator. Paris: Pierre Seghers, 1949. Quarto (9 1/2 x 7 in), original cream paper cover, original dust jacket. Book fine, dust jacket with a little bit of edgewear and a tiny piece of clear tape (over a small tear) on verso. A beautiful copy in the rare dust jacket, extremely rare signed by both Cendrars and Doisneau.

Bandanna Ballads [Signed by Howard Weeden and by Joel Chandler Harris] [Gone with the Wind] Including Shadows on the Wall

New York: Doubleday & McClure Company, 1899. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. A Very Good copy of the first edition, first printing, in the Publisher's original cloth (some spots and soiling to the cloth, spine lettering faded, some undulations to the spine cloth, apparent additional pastedown placed on top of the front pastedown -- presumably as a repair to a cracked gutter, page block settled), SIGNED BY HOWARD WEEDEN on the half-title and FURTHER SIGNED BY JOEL CHANDLER HARRIS at his Introduction to the book; a collection of poetry, some of which is in the old Negro dialect, and accompanying pictures by Maria Howard Weeden [who wrote under the name "Howard Weeden"] introduced by the great Joel Chandler Harris who proclaimed Weeden to be the "bright light" of late Nineteenth Century American authors. Weeden, a small, frail, white woman, who was both a Poet and an Artist so nearsighted that she painted with a three-hair brush, depicted former slaves in a dignified and respectful manner that was not typical for the era. Her portrayals were so notable that William Kurtz, the technical director for the adaptation of Margaret Mitchell's "Gone with the Wind" to the screen, borrowed a copy of "Bandanna Ballads" from a contact in Atlanta for use in preparing the movie and, upon returning it, stated that: ?"This book was used extensively in preparing the costumes of the Negro servants by the Wardrobe Department of the Selznick International Studios, Culver City, Calif., during the filming?" of ?"Gone With the Wind.", thus making the book a much more important work than many realize. Copies singed by Weeden are not common to the market and copies signed by both Weeden and Harris are as scarce as hen's teeth. A Very Good copy, SIGNED BY HOWARD WEEDEN AND ALSO SIGNED BY JOEL CHANDLER HARRIS. A QUITE SCARCE TO RARE COPY OF THIS IMPORTANT WORK.

        Histoires naturelles

Paris: Floury,, 1899. Small folio (310 x 220 mm). Art binding signed by P. L. Martin, dated 1973, of olive green calf, author's name on the upper cover and artist's name on the lower cover, title in relief frame, chemise and slipcase. Front wrapper and 22 lithographs hors texte by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Limited edition, number 84 of 100 numbered copies. Lautrec began his preliminary sketches in 1896, at the Jardin d'Acclimatation, but the lithographs were only executed in 1898. Publication was delayed by the author, displeased with the illustrations which did not illustrate the text in every instance. Though today it is seen as one of the most celebrated and sought-after of all livres d'artiste, the book was received poorly when it was issued and did not sell out until 1917.

A strikingly poignant composite photograph of the Members of the 1899 North Carolina Senate, including the last African American to serve in the state legislature until 1968

"Silver gelatin photograph, 10"" x 7.5"" on a 13"" x 16"" titled mount, ""SENATE OF NORTH CAROLINA ?" SESSION OF 1899"" (Photographer: C.P. Wharton, Raleigh, N.C.). Light toning and soiling to mount, photograph overall very clean with only a hint of edge wear, else very good condition overall. A fascinating composite photograph featuring, at the extreme lower right corner, the sole African American to serve in the North Carolina Senate (and the last until 1968). Misidentified in the printed identifications on the mount as ""T. A. Fuller, 11th Dist., Warrenton, Warren Co."", Fuller appears as the last Senator in a list that is otherwise alphabetical. Born to freed slaves in 1867 in Franklinton, North Carolina, Fuller attended school, receiving his B.A. degree from Shaw University in 1890, as well as a master's degree from the same institution in 1893. A Baptist preacher and an educator, he was elected to the Senate as a candidate on the ""Fusion"" ticket?"an alliance between the Republicans and Populists who were attempting to break the Democratic monopoly of power. Elected to office against his own stated wishes, he became the first African American to be elected to the North Carolina Senate since Reconstruction. Needless to say, his reception in the all white North Carolina Senate was less than cordial. Not only is he the last person pictured in the present photo, he was the last to take the oath of office, although the Senators were supposed to take it in alphabetical order. Because Senators were supposed to kiss the bible following their taking the oath, they compelled Fuller to go last. Things went downhill from there. Any hope on the part of his constituents that Fuller could affect any real change in North Carolina was soon dashed. Although politically a conservative, Fuller received no committee assignments and was largely ignored by his colleagues. To add insult to injury, the legislature passed a law that year that largely disenfranchised African Americans?"a move that ended Fuller's political career. After his single term in the Senate, Fuller moved to Memphis, Tennessee, where he became a prominent minister and educator."
