[Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

        The Golfer's Alphabet

New York: Harper & Brothers. 1899. First. Presumed later edition. Illustrated by A.B. Frost. Square quarto. Cloth and illustrated paper over boards. Large but attractive period bookplate, edgewear and some modest erosion to the paper, professionally touched up, and a light dampstain to the front board illustration, a clean and tight, about very good copy. Printed on rectos only, each page alternates a rhymed alphabet of golf with wonderful comic illustrations by Frost. OCLC and Donovan and Murdoch both list 1898 as the first edition, and we can find no mention in either source of this 1899 issue. Regardless, copies of either issue (if indeed there are two) are almost never seen, and rare enough that the facsimile edition published in 1967 is also exceptionally scarce. .

        Dot and the Kangaroo

London: Thomas Burleigh, 1899. Quarto, portrait frontispiece and 19 full-page black & white illustrations by Frank Mahony; a very good copy in the original red cloth with patterned endpapers. The very rare first edition of this Australian children's classic. The story of Dot, the little girl lost in the Australian bush, who is helped by a kindly grey kangaroo, has become 'a fundamental text of Australian children's literature' ({i People, Print and Paper}). It has rarely been out of print over the past century, appearing in innumerable editions, with illustrations by a variety of artists. The author, Ethel Pedley, was an English-born music teacher, and committed conservationist, who lived in Sydney. Although she died in England before the book was published, she had made arrangements for {i Bulletin} artist Frank Mahony to illustrate the book. His depictions of the bush certainly do give an authentically Australian air to the publication, which although published in London was 'entirely produced in Australia'.

        A Pictorial Description of Broadway.

New York: The Mail & Express Co., 1899. - Oblong narrow folio, (6 x 17 inches). Advertisement (pale stain to first few leaves). 37 chromolithographed sheets, printed on both sides Original publisher's pictorial paper wrappers (rebacked with linen, some chipping and staining), preserved in a folding blue cloth slipcase lettered in gilt (chip to lower corner, hinge starting). First edition. A series of beautiful chromolithographs that chronicle the main thoroughfare of Broadway "from Steamship Row and Bowling Green to 59th Str." (Holden). Gray calls it a precursor to the photographic books that became popular after the turn of the century, commenting that it "forms a baseline, however unsatisfactory, for documentation of that street" (Gray, ed. p. iii). The Mail & Express Company was the publisher of the Evening Mail, a New York City daily newspaper. This is an important block-by-block record of what Broadway looked like at the turn of the 20th century. "Established in 17th-century Dutch New York, Broadway grew with the city, not only as a thoroughfare but as a conveyance of an expanding city, carrying progress with the tide of time, section by section, with each part reinventing itself after the older Broadway and New York moved on It was Broadway that carried the growing city. Broadway's expansion took it to the environs of Columbus Circle as the city was preparing to unify itself in the 1890s, but anticipating the next century's growth, outlying paths known as the Boulevard and the Bloomingdale Road were rebuilt, widened, and made part of Broadway" (Gabrielan, p. 7). Randall Gabrielan, "Along Broadway." Christopher Gray, ed. "Fifth Avenue, 1911, from Start to Finish in Historic Block-by-Block Photographs." Holden 1944.         Original Studio Portrait of Lt.-Colonel Sam Steele, Lord Strathcona Horse

Montreal: Wm. Notman & Son. 1899. (Photograph) Very good. Original Photograph on embossed Notman studio card with glassine envelope. Card: 10 3 / 8" X 6 1 / 4" Image: 7 1 / 4" X 3 1 / 2". Original Portrait Col. Sam Steele. Samuel Benfield Steele 1851 - 1919 Photographer: Wm. Notman & Son., Montreal. Ca. 1899 Neg # 137436 Major General Sir Samuel Benfield Steele, CB, KCMG, MVO (January 5, 1851 – January 30, 1919) was a famous member of the North West Mounted Police. He joined the local militia as a teenager and fought against the Fenians at the Battle of Ridgeway. He was sent west first to fight the Red River Rebellion of Louis Riel, but arrived after the Métis had surrendered. Steele had long been fascinated by the west, devouring the works of James Fenimore Cooper in his youth. He was especially interested in the First Nations, and spent his time in the west learning from them and the Metis. However he was recalled from Manitoba and based in Fort Henry in Kingston for the next few years. He was chosen to be one of the first members of the NWMP, being only the third officer sworn in. In 1873 he returned to Fort Garry with the new force and was put in charge of drilling the new recruits. Over the next few years he crisscrossed the prairies, before being assigned to NWMP headquarters to train new recruits. In 1881 he was assigned to meet with Sitting Bull, who fresh from defeating General Custer had moved into Canada and was demanding land for his people. Steele and a few officers met them and reached a peaceful agreement. This action won Steele great acclaim in the newspapers of the United States and was the beginning of his role as a public figure. In the North-West Rebellion Steele was dispatched with a small force. Missing the Battle of Batoche Steele and his force were sent to move against the last rebel force lead by Chief Big Bear. Steele and his two dozen Mounties defeated Big Bear's force at Loon Lake in the last battle ever fought on Canadian territory. The contributions of the NWMP to putting down the rebellion went largely ignored and unrewarded, to Steele's great annoyance. Steele spent the next ten years assigned to Fort McLeod, and at age 41 married Maria Harwood, eventually the couple had three children. In 1898 he was sent north to the Yukon to succeed Charles Constantine with policing during the Klondike Gold Rush. Initially, he was in charge of the customs posts at the Chilkoot Pass and White Pass, where he created the rule that no one would be allowed to enter without a ton of goods. Steele and his force made the Klondike Gold Rush into one of the most orderly events of its kind in history and made the police force famous around the world, which ensured its survival at a critical time when the force's dissolution was being debated in parliament. In 1900 he was second in command in Lord Strathcona's Horse, a Canadian light cavalry unit sent to South Africa during the Boer war and did so with distinction. Steele, however, disliked greatly what he was ordered to do by the British, which included burning towns and moving the populace to concentration camps.Steele was knighted in 1918 and was made a Companion of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath, Knight Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George, and Member of the Royal Victorian Order.Canada's fifth tallest mountain, Mount Steele, is named after him..

        Sarah Bernhardt: La Samaritaine

Paris: Imprimerie Chaix, (1899). Framed lithograph from the series "Les Maîtres de l'Affiche," accented with gilt ink. The poster was originally designed by Alphonse Mucha for Sarah Bernhardt's role in La Samaritaine at the Theatre de la Renaissance in Paris, in 1897. Bernhart played Photina, a Samaritan woman who converts to Christianity, and she is depicted by Mucha with a large water jar and flowing hair, encircled by golden stars and a mosaic with Hebrew letters spelling "Jehova." The prints in the "Les Maîtres de l'Affiche" series were smaller, collectible versions of popular posters. This is plate no. 166, and it is printed on a sheet embossed with the series logo. Plate measures 15 1/2 by 11 7/16 inches. Frame measures 23 3/4 by 14 1/4, with a burgundy cloth-covered mat and gold and pink accents around the opening. A couple of faint creases to top-left corner and a larger crease to bottom-left corner, 1-inch closed tear and other short tears to margins, not affecting the image, else about fine.

Le Cinquiéme Acte [in l'Aurore, no. 694, 12 sept. 1899].

      - Paris, 1899. [61,5x45,5 cm]. 4 pages. Folded twice. Slightly yellowed and with some light creases. A very well-preserved copy. Zola's text covers 4 of the 6 columns on the front page. Le Cinquième Acte, published in september 1899, was the fourth of altogether seven articles and open letters published by Zola in l Aurore between 1898 and 1900 in favour of the French Army captain of Jewish and Alsatian descent Alfred Dreyfus, charged with treason in 1894 in a much-publicized affaire. In the article Zola expresses his outrage with the military tribunal in Rennes where Dreyfus, repatriated from his imprisonment on the Devil s Island, was tried again only to be re-condemned despite clear evidence in favour of his innocence. The anger and disappointment of Zola, who had spent almost a year in exile in London in the aftermath of his 1898 open letter J Accuse.! is quite palpable in the text. The Rennes trial was, says Zola, supposed to be the fifth act of the play that was the Dreyfus affair -- a happy ending where the wronged party is redeemed -- but it turned out to be only the fourth act : When, Oh dear God, will there be the Fifth? Zola did not have to wait for very long for the fifth act , as Dreyfus was pardoned later that same year on the grounds of feeble health. The finale of the affair was however not enacted until 1906, when Dreyfus was formally acquitted and his honour restored, something Zola himself sadly never lived to see.
