        A Pictorial Description of Broadway.

New York: The Mail & Express Co., 1899. - Oblong narrow folio, (6 x 17 inches). Advertisement (a bit toned throughout). 37 chromolithographed sheets, printed on both sides. Original publisher's pictorial paper wrappers (covers detached, one or two chips). First edition. A series of beautiful chromolithographs that chronicle the main thoroughfare of Broadway "from Steamship Row and Bowling Green to 59th Str." (Holden). Gray calls it a precursor to the photographic books that became popular after the turn of the century, commenting that it "forms a baseline, however unsatisfactory, for documentation of that street" (Gray, ed. p. iii). The Mail & Express Company was the publisher of the Evening Mail, a New York City daily newspaper. This is an important block-by-block record of what Broadway looked like at the turn of the 20th century. "Established in 17th-century Dutch New York, Broadway grew with the city, not only as a thoroughfare but as a conveyance of an expanding city, carrying progress with the tide of time, section by section, with each part reinventing itself after the older Broadway and New York moved on It was Broadway that carried the growing city. Broadway's expansion took it to the environs of Columbus Circle as the city was preparing to unify itself in the 1890s, but anticipating the next century's growth, outlying paths known as the Boulevard and the Bloomingdale Road were rebuilt, widened, and made part of Broadway" (Gabrielan, p. 7). Randall Gabrielan, "Along Broadway." Christopher Gray, ed. "Fifth Avenue, 1911, from Start to Finish in Historic Block-by-Block Photographs." Holden 1944.         The River War, An Historical Account of the Reconquest of the Soudan

London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1899. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is a collector-worthy set of the first edition, first printing of Churchill's second book with both noteworthy provenance and bibliographic interest. Published in two massive volumes in 1899, the first edition is compelling in many respects. First is the inherent merit of the work itself, which is arresting, insightful, powerfully descriptive, and of enduring relevance. Writing about the British campaign in the Sudan, Churchill - a young officer in a colonial British army - is unusually sympathetic to the Mahdist forces and critical of Imperial cynicism and cruelty. The work offers the candid perspective of the future great man of the 20th century from the distinctly 19th century battlefields where Churchill learned to write and earned his early fame. Not only a compelling piece of writing, the first edition is also beautiful, rare, and bibliographically important. The large volumes are aesthetically striking, decorated with gilt representations of the Mahdi's tomb on the spines and a gunboat on the front covers. Each of the two large volumes is printed on heavy paper with a profusion of illustrations, maps, and plans. There were only 2,000 copies of the first edition, first printing. Moreover, this is one of the few Churchill books for which there was no concurrent U.S. first edition. Bibliographically it is notable that the first edition is the only unabridged edition to this day. Here is a collector-worthy first printing set, notably clean and unrestored. The boards are exceptional and spine presentation superior, with bright gilt, only minor wear at the spine ends, and just a barely discernible hint of uniform spine toning. We note a single small bump to the Volume II lower front corner and minor wear to the hinges and extremities, with a 3/8 inch abrasion to the Volume II upper rear hinge. The contents of both volumes are complete. The original black endpapers are present, as are all maps, plans, and illustrations, including the tissue guards at each frontispiece. The sole previous ownership marks are those of the original owner from the month of publication, confirming that this is a lifelong mated set. Spotting is mild for the edition, intermittent throughout. Gutter breaks are endemic to the massive volumes of this edition. The Volume I binding remains uncompromisingly firm and tight. The Volume II binding remains intact but tender, showing a cosmetic split at the front endpapers with the mull beneath still fully attached. The sole previous owner name is that of "C. T. Atkinson", inked on both front free endpapers together with the notation "Exeter College, Oxford" and the date "November 1899" - the same month this first printing set was published. Interestingly, the life span of Christopher Thomas Atkinson (1874-1964) closely coincided with that of Churchill. Atkinson was admitted as a Fellow at Exeter College, Oxford, in 1898. During the First World War, Atkinson held the rank of Captain with a posting to the War Office. After the war, Atkinson, who became an eminent historian, wrote the history of the Seventh Division - which counted 68,000 casualties, fourteen VCs, and was called by Great War historian Cyril Falls "One of the greatest fighting formations Britain ever put into the field." Of bibliographic interest is the lack of the publisher's catalogue, typically bound in at the rear of Volume I. Bibliographer Ronald Cohen speculates "I consider that copies without a catalogue were destined for sale in either the American or other overseas markets." (Cohen, Volume I, p.35) Given the definitive domestic British provenance of this set, it seems that the inclusion or omission of the rear catalogue was not simply a matter of export vs. domestic copies. Each volume is housed in a custom preservation case with dark blue leather spine stamped gilt and blind over marbled paper boards with marbled paper interior.         One of the earliest examples of a Calvin Coolidge letter that we have seen, written only a year after he began his private law practice in Northampton, Massachusetts!

Autograph Letter Signed "Calvin Coolidge Jr.", 1 page, 8.5" x 11", on his law office letterhead, Northampton, Massachusetts, August 21, 1899 to Charles H. Dunning concerning the settlement of an estate. Expected folds, light toning and soiling, else fine condition. An unusually early ALS from the future President: "Mr. Addis is authorized to settle for Eelsan's share in the Estate. I went over the matter with him and we found that a dividend came due at the Cooperation on May 1 of some $30, and I think perhaps we figured the tools rather low at $20. When I figured his share at $138.95 I did not have in mind the May 1 dividend ?" that would probably come in. I think 145 is about what the share would be now with accrued interest..."After apprenticing with the Northampton law firm of Hammond & Field, the Vermont-born Coolidge was admitted to the bar in 1897, opening his own law office the following year. The same year, he embarked on his political career b

Contains [xviii] 382 printed pages of text, fold-out map to the rear. Sun fading to the spine, light foxing to the end leaves and in Very Good tight and sound condition. Smith played first-class cricket for Oxford University and Surrey, was educated, from 1886 to 1892, at Charterhouse School, one of the principal nurseries of the Association Football game, and learned many of the skills that subsequently brought him fame while boarding at the school. Smith captained the England team on at least 13, and possibly as many as 16, occasions (early records are inexact) between 1896 and 1901, winning at least eight games, possibly as many as ten, and drawing two. Smith retired from football shortly after his final international appearance and became joint headmaster at Ludgrove School, a preparatory school in Barnet recognised as one of the principal feeder institutions for Eton College. His fellow headmaster, Arthur Dunn - who had founded Ludgrove in 1892 - was another noted amateur footballer and had also played as centre-forward for England. Dunn died, aged only 41, a few months after Smith joined the school, and thereafter G. O. shared his duties with his fellow Corinthian, England captain, and great friend, William Oakley. He also taught, from 1918 at Sunningdale Preparatory School and died, aged 71, in retirement at his home in Hampshire. Ludgrove Prize Plate inside dated December 18th, 1906, SIGNED 'G. O. Smith.'

[Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

        The Golfer's Alphabet

New York: Harper & Brothers. 1899. First. Presumed later edition. Illustrated by A.B. Frost. Square quarto. Cloth and illustrated paper over boards. Large but attractive period bookplate, edgewear and some modest erosion to the paper, professionally touched up, and a light dampstain to the front board illustration, a clean and tight, about very good copy. Printed on rectos only, each page alternates a rhymed alphabet of golf with wonderful comic illustrations by Frost. OCLC and Donovan and Murdoch both list 1898 as the first edition, and we can find no mention in either source of this 1899 issue. Regardless, copies of either issue (if indeed there are two) are almost never seen, and rare enough that the facsimile edition published in 1967 is also exceptionally scarce. .

        Dot and the Kangaroo

London: Thomas Burleigh, 1899. Quarto, portrait frontispiece and 19 full-page black & white illustrations by Frank Mahony; a very good copy in the original red cloth with patterned endpapers. The very rare first edition of this Australian children's classic. The story of Dot, the little girl lost in the Australian bush, who is helped by a kindly grey kangaroo, has become 'a fundamental text of Australian children's literature' ({i People, Print and Paper}). It has rarely been out of print over the past century, appearing in innumerable editions, with illustrations by a variety of artists. The author, Ethel Pedley, was an English-born music teacher, and committed conservationist, who lived in Sydney. Although she died in England before the book was published, she had made arrangements for {i Bulletin} artist Frank Mahony to illustrate the book. His depictions of the bush certainly do give an authentically Australian air to the publication, which although published in London was 'entirely produced in Australia'.
