The Fishes of North America that are captured on Hook and Line. With eighty colored plates made from oil portraits of living fishes before their color tints had faded

New York: the Fishes of North America Publishing Co, 1898. Vol.I (all published), folio. (18 3/4 x 12 inches). 40 chromolithographic plates by Armstrong & Co (24), Geo. H. Walker (4) and others after John L. Petrie (4 plates mounted, as issued), one full-page uncoloured illustration, numerous uncoloured illustrations of fish within the text. (Old repairs to three text leaves and 1 plate: "Spanish Mackerel"). Bound to style in green half morocco over contemporary green cloth-covered boards, the covers ruled in gilt and stamped with the gilt arms of a British Ducal family, spine in six compartments with raised bands, ruled and lettered in giltA very rare work with forty "very beautifully drawn and color-printed plates of fishes" (Bennett). The original intention was that this work should be complete in two volumes with a total of 80 plates: only this first volume was ever published, yet it ranks along with Kilbourne and Goode's Game Fishes of the United States (New York, 1879) as one of the two greatest illustrated ichthyological works of the 19th century. The plates are printed by at least two firms: the majority are by Armstrong & Co. (The Riverside Press) of Cambridge, Mass., a few others are signed by Geo. H. Walker & Co of Boston. Twelve are without an imprint. As the preface makes clear this work was a labour-of-love for both the author and artist: "I have been engaged nearly a quarter of a century in gathering the notes from which the text of this book has been written, and twelve years in procuring the oil portraits of living fish, caught from their native waters, that I might obtain lithographic facsimiles ...The aggregate distance travelled was 28,558 miles, and the days occupied in transit and in catching and painting the fishes numbered nine hundred and seventy-two, or eighty-one working days of each angling season during twelve years.Mr. John L. Petrie, the artist, has been my steadfast companion during this protracted but pleasant task. He has painted the portraits of each fish represented ... from living specimens caught on my own rod, with the exception of the Pacific Salmons, which were taken alive in traps."Bennett p.51; Bruns H80; McGrath p.197 (parts issue); Nissen ZBI 1840; Wetzel 153.

Remarkable documents relating to the burial expenses of Butch Cassidy and Joe Walker

Price, Utah, 1898. Various. "On April 21, 1897, Butch Cassidy, Joe Walker, and Elza Lay robbed the payroll of the Pleasant Valley Coal Company at Castle Gate, Utah, just west of Price, Utah. Hearing that Walker had been seen in the area, on May 8, 1898, a posse consisting of Carbon County, Utah, Sheriff C.W. Allred, Pete Anderson, Jack Gentry, Jim Inglefield, Billy McGuire, J.W. Warf, Jack Watson, J. B. Whitmore, and George Whitmore, was formed. Early on the morning of May 13th, mistakenly thinking they had discovered the camp of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, the posse shot and killed two men. They recognized one body as Joe Walker. They thought the other was Butch Cassidy. The headline in the Salt Lake Tribune on May 14, 1898 proclaimed “Butch is dead.” A coroner’s inquest ruled that Walker and Cassidy were indeed the two bodies. Sheriff John Ward, of Evanston, Wyoming, who once had Cassidy in his jail for three months, was asked to come and confirm the identity of the second outlaw. He arrived a day after the burial; the bodies were exhumed. The May 17th edition of the Salt Lake Herald headlined “Butch Cassidy is Still Alive,” reporting that Ward had identified the second body as that of Bob Culp, a notorious cattle thief. Photocopy of the article is present. There are reports that Butch Cassidy, hiding under a haystack in a wagon, watched his own funeral on May 15th.(1) County of Carbon letterhead, 8.25” x 11”. “Burrial Exspences of Joe Walker and Butch Cassidy.” Price, Utah, May 14 and 15, 1898. Clear listing of the information, including cost of items purchased (“2 Coffins & Boxes”) and from whom, and names of those paid for “washing 2 bodies … Diging graves … 2 suits under wear … Two Shrouds … halling Coffins … halling Bodies to place of Burial … Diging up Body for identification … Shaving 1 Body…” After it was exhumed, Sheriff Ward identified the body thought to be Butch Cassidy as cattle thief Bob Culp.(2) County of Carbon letterhead, 8.25” x 11”. Price, Utah, 1898. Headed “Expencies.” Five names listed, 2 or 3 days each, at $3 per day. Cost of hiring and feeding horses. (3) Typed Document Signed “P.J. Olsen” as Coroner, 8” x 9.5”. Lightweight carbon signed in ink. Sale of two branded horses for $19.50. Brands drawn in ink."

Poster for Violin and music lessons. Paris: Chaix 1898. Published in "Les Maitres de l'Affiche", 1899. Plate no. 175. Indrammet på syrefrit karton i lys eg med anti-reflektivt glas med en UV beskyttelse på 70 %, 1895. Les Maîtres de l'Affiche (The Masters of the Poster) refers to 256 colour lithographic plates used to create a very significant art publication during the Belle Époque in Paris, France. The collection, reproduced from the original works of ninety-seven artists in a smaller format, was put together by Jules Chéret, the father of poster art.By the 1890's the streets of French cities were enlivened by large, colourful posters. The poster had not only caught the fancy of the public, but its best examples were already being regarded as true works of art (specifically, as fine prints) to be exhibited, reviewed in journals, collected and reproduced in a more manageable form. In the last five years of the 19th century, Imprimerie Chaix was to play a great part in codifying, hallowing and perpetuating the ebullient spirit of the Belle Epoque. The renowned set of 256 prints were created by Imprimerie Chaix, forever to be known as a set as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche. Each print was rendered as a separate sheet measuring 11 x 15 inches. [27.9 x 38.1 cm]. The set was compiled in a unique way: Every month for 60 months - from December 1895 through November 1900 - subscribers received a wrapper containing four consecutively numbered prints. On 16 occasions (each of the five Decembers, each of the Junes, and the March and September of the final three years) the monthly wrapper also contained a bonus plate, not a poster reproduction but a specially created lithograph. The compilation of this set of original prints makes up the complete suite known as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche.

[Bound with:] Sur une nouvelle substance fortement radio-active, contenue dans la pechblende. Paris, 1898; FIRST EDITION, pages 1215-1217, 4to; P. Curie and Mme. Curie and G. Bemont, presentee par M. Becquerel. [Bound with:] Sur le spectre d'une substance radio-active. Note de E. Demarcay.Paris, 1898; FIRST EDITION, page 1218, 4to. Published in: Comptes Rendus Hebdomadiares des Seances del'Academie des Sciences. Paris, 1898, volume 127; original black and white paper covered boards, with printed label on front panel; 4to, 144-209 pp. [second title page] 1180-1302 pp. Minor wear at extremities, otherwise a fine copy of these rare and important works. The Curies discovered radium shortly after their discovery of the radio-active substance polonium, both found in pitchblende (uranium ore). Polonium was so named after Mme. Curie's native country, Poland. Radium was estimated by Mme. Curie (in 1898) to have a probable atomic weight of 226.2 and was about two million times as radio-active as uranium (Printing and the Mind of Man, 394). Radium has found many uses in medicine and industry. In1903 the Curies and Becquerel were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics; Becquerel's work was instrumental to the Curies" discoveries. The above paper "Sur le spectre d'une substance radio-active" by Demarcay, confirmed the Curies' discovery of the presence of radium in pitchblende. Marie (Maria Sklodowska) Curie (1867-1934). Chemist, physicist, Professor at the Sorbonne, discoverer of the elements radium and polonium. Madame Curie succeeded her husband, Pierre Curie, as professor of physics at the Sorbonne in Paris, in 1906, thus becoming the first woman titular professor at Sorbonne. She founded the Radium Institute in Warsaw, in 1913; she visited the United States in 1921 and was presented with a gram of radium-salt by President Warren G. Harding. Madame Curie was the only person to receive the Nobel Prize twice - once in physics,in 1903 and again in chemistry, in 1911. She was nominated for membership in the French Academy of Science in 1911, but was rejected by one vote, because she was a woman. The Curie (unit quantity of radon in radio-active equilibrium with 1 gram of radium) was named in honor of Marie and Pierre Curie. Madame Curie was a pioneer in the use of radio-activity in medicine, i.e. in treating cancer. This brave, brilliant and diligent lady research scientist ultimately gave her life for her work; she died of leukemia, caused by over-exposure to radio-active substances, at Haute Savoie, France, on July 4, 1934.Norman 545.
