      1898. A Wonderful Late Nineteenth-Century Jacquard Weaving Manuscriptwith 106 Fabric Samples Affixed[TEXTILE MANUSCRIPT]. [BERGIER, M.]. Cours de theorie pour le tissage [Lectures on the Theory of Weaving]. Professe par J. Berjon. Fait par M. Bergier. [Lyon]: 1898.Calligraphic manuscript in French on paper with numerous detailed illustrations of weaving patterns and looms and with 106 fabric samples affixed. Large folio (17 x 11 9/16 inches; 432 x 293 mm.). Written in black ink within a black ruled border, diagrams with additional color. [174] leaves, plus a final leaf blank except for rules. Most leaves with writing on both sides. Affixed to the verso of the title is a portrait of “A. Thiers/Président de la République Française/1872” woven in silk by Carquillat from the portrait Bruyas (measuring 10 7/16 x 8 1/2 inches; 266 x 216 mm.).Bound in contemporary quarter green roan over green pebble-grain cloth boards. Spine with black sewing threads visible and with three green roan blocks ruled and lettered in gilt (from top to bottom: “Lyon/1898,” “Théorie de Tissage,” and “M B”). Marbled endpapers. A wonderful example, exceptionally fine and clean. Housed in a matching cloth slipcase. Together with a large oval piece of fabric (17 1/4 x 11 inches; 435 x 280 mm.).This highly technical manuscript, which Bergier completed under Berjon, displays an incredible amount of detail and precision. It contains numerous diagrams of looms and of Jacquard punch cards, weaving pattern cards, and written instructions for setting up looms in order to weave a variety of patterns upon different textiles. Bergier details the composition (both patterned and plain) of various types of silks, taffetas, velvets, serges, damasks, etc., giving instructions on each method of weaving, and often showing the positioning of the silk strands, through the use of figurative and graphical diagrams. This is accompanied by an actual sample of the finished fabric.The manuscript begins with a description of the textiles used in the manufacture of different fabrics, including silk, wool, cotton, linen, hemp, jute, and ramie (“Description sommaire des textiles les plus employés à la fabrication des tissus usuels)” and a discussion of the theory of fabric production (“Théorie de la fabrique”). It is then divided into seven chapters, each with a special title-page:“Cartons d’armures”; “De composition des armures”—with sixty-six swatches affixed; “Rapport de la mise encarte avec le lisage, le carton, la mecanique et le tissu” ; “Cartons de façonnés”—with seven pattern cards affixed; “Empoutages”—with nine pattern cards affixed; “De composition des façonnés” —with twenty-seven fabric swatches and twenty-six pattern cards affixed; “Gazes anglaises”—with thirteen fabric swatches and four pattern cards affixed.Born into a Lyonnese family of weavers, Joseph Marie Jacquard (1752-1834 ) “was inspired by Vaucanson's punched-card loom to invent the Jacquard attachment, which caused any loom that used it to be called a Jacquard loom. The attachment was an automatic device that for the first time allowed a single operator to control from the loom all the movements involved in the production of complex woven patterns. The Jacquard loom reduced the amount of redundant manual labor that had previously been required in weaving, lowering labor and manufacturing costs and reducing physical hardship for the textile workers. It served as the catalyst for the technological revolution of the textile industry in the nineteenth century. Jacquard developed the idea for his invention in 1790, but because of the French Revolution did not exhibit it until 1801. Jacquard was granted a patent for his invention in 1803; in 1806 his loom was declared public property, and Jacquard was awarded a pension and royalties on each machine sold. Under the terms of Jacquard’s pension he was required to introduce his technology to the textile industry of Lyons. During his first efforts, workers rioted out of fear of losing their jobs to the new technology, and at one point Jacquard had to flee for his life. However, he persevered and by the year 1812 there were eleven thousand Jacquard looms operating in France. By the time of Jacquard’s death in 1834, twenty thousand Jacquard looms were installed in the Lyons region alone. Jacquard’s invention made use of a punched-card system for storing and generating patterns. In the production of designs different cards were tied together by ribbons and hundreds of cards could be used in elaborate designs. Charles Babbage later incorporated punched-card technology as a method of data and program input in the design of his Analytical Engine…For use in the United States Census of 1890, Herman Hollerith developed electrical machines for tabulating data stored on punched cards. Hollerith’s company eventually evolved into IBM. Punched-card tabulation remained a primary means of data processing until it was phased out around 1960” (Diana H. Hook and Jeremy M.         Album titled "Webereistudien," with printed calligraphic titles, calligraphic manuscript sub-titles and headings, manuscript text, original drawings and diagrams, and mounted samples

      [Werdau, Saxony: circa 1898]. 7 parts in one volume, folio. (18 5/8 x 12 1/2 inches). 7 section titles printed in black within decorative red borders, 234 pages all with printed red decorative borders, including 196 pages with text and integral illustrations (most in red and black, mounted and varnished) and samples (all mounted). Original half purple cloth over green cloth-covered boards, by Aug. Thümmler of Werdau, the upper cover with elaborate blocked lettering at the centre "Höhere Web-Schule / Werdau i[m]. S[axony]", and in small gilt letters at the foot of the upper cover "F.W. Clarenbach". A German-American master-weaver's aide-memoire, with designs of dazzling complexity that presage the work of Bridget Riley, Victor Vasarely and others that were to follow sixty years later. The work is presented in seven sections, each preceded by an attractive printed title, but otherwise made up of manuscript material and original artwork. The intention of the compiler of this work was to provide a mass of technical information to students studying textile production, but, time, technical advances and modern sensibilities have rendered technical aspects redundant (but historically interesting), whilst promoting the beautifully executed drawings and diagrams into individual works of art. The drawings of looms in the 'Jacquard' section have a dream-like quality that would have been appreciated (and was emulated) by the Surrealists. The diagrammatic weaving pattern designs, at their simplest, have the quality of fine folk art, whilst, at their most ornate they present a visual feast that is a match for the work of the Op Artists of the second half of the 20th century.The uniformly high level of the work in this album supports the theory that the compiler, F.William Clarenbach, was an instructor rather than a student at the 'Höhere Web-Schule' [Weaving School] in Werdau. Research shows that he subsequently emigrated to the United States and that his abilities were rapidly recognized by his employers at various mills in Massachusetts: he was an assistant superintendent by 1907, when he was promoted to superintendent, and in 1908 he was promoted to a larger mill, where he was put in charge of the Stevens Mill at North Andover, Mass (Henry A. Rayne American Textile Directory 1908).The individual sections of the album cover various aspects of the manufacturing process and are each preceded by a specially printed title.         The Spectator. In eight volumes

      London - John C. Nimmo, 1898 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A first edition andcomplete set of the hugely popular eighteenth-century periodical, in fine bindings. First Edition. Complete in eight volumes. Each volume features tissue-guarded portrait frontispieces and additional titlepages with vignettes. Portraits include: Joseph Addison, Richard Steele, Eustace Budgell, John Hughes, Thomas Tickell, Thomas Parnell, Henry Grove, Zachary Pearce. With bookbinder's stamps for Blackwell to the verso of the front free endpapers. With the pictorial bookplate of Mary and Everett Kent to the front pastedowns. Volume VIII contains an index to the rear. 'With an introduction and notes by George A. Aitken, author of 'The Life of Richard Steele', etc'. The Spectator was a daily publication of 171112, founded by Joseph Addison and Richard Steele in England after they met at Charterhouse School. Each 'paper', or 'number', was approximately 2,500 words long, and the original run consisted of 555 numbers. These were collected into seven volumes. The paper was revived without the involvement of Steele in 1714, appearing three timesweekly for six months, and these papers when collected formed the eighth volume. The stated goal of The Spectator was 'to enliven morality with wit, and to temper wit with morality. . . to bring philosophy out of the closets and libraries, schools and colleges, to dwell in clubs and assemblies, at tea-tables and coffeehouses'. One of its functions was to provide readers with educated, topical talking points, and advice on how to carry on conversations in a polite manner. In keeping with the values of the Enlightenment philosophies of their time, the authors of The Spectator promoted family, marriage, and courtesy. Condition: In half crushed morocco bindings with marbled boards. Externally, smart with some shelfwear only and to the head of the spines only. Internally, firmly bound. Bright and clean with just the very occasional spot or mark. Several pages unopened. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED..

        Les Maitres de l'Affiche", Plate 115: Harper's May

      Imprimerie Chaix Paris: Imprimerie Chaix, 1898. unbound. very good(+). Poster. Color lithograph. Page measures 15.75" x 11.5". Printed between 1895 and 1900, "Les Maitres de l'Affiche" ("Masters of the Poster") was a lithographed series of 256 plates that reproduced the best American and European posters of the time. Under the artistic direction of Jules Cheret (1836-1932), the prints were published as a monthly subscription. In addition to the four prints disseminated every month, there were 16 bonus plates each originally designed by noted artists including Cheret. This print was originally an advertisement for Harper's Magazine by Edward Penfield (1866-1925), an artist who lived and worked in New York City. Known as the "originator of the poster in America", Penfield designed for Harper's in the 18790's and his work is still highly collectible and sought after.

        Under Two Flags: Two Volumes in One (Hardcover, with ALS)

      Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott, 1898. Later printing. Tipped on to the front endpaper is an autographed letter SIGNED and dated ("April 13, 1886") by the author as "Ouida" and stamped by the North American Review on April 29, 1886. & & The North American Review (NAR) is the oldest literary magazine published in the United States, founded in Boston in 1815 by William Tudor (1779-1830), its first editor. The magazine had a significant list of contributors, including the likes of William Cullen Bryant, Mark Twain, John Steinbeck, Walt Whitman, and Ouida on several occasions. Publication was suspended between 1940-1964 after the magazine's owner, J. H. Smythe, was revealed to be a Japanese spy. The NAR resumed publication in 1964 at Cornell College, with editorship assumed by the poet Robert Dana, until the college sold the rights to the University of Northern Iowa four years later, where it continues to operate.& & The first mention of Ouida in NAR seems to have come from Rhoda Broughton in the May 1877 issue, on the topic of censorship of the author's novels. Marie Louise de la Ramee, who wrote as Ouida, would have then been 38 years old. Throughout the late 1870s and into the early 1900s, she would continue to contribute to the magazine, becoming well known for her provocative, sexually inclined adventure literature. "Under Two Flags" has been adapted to film on several occasions, including short-length features, beginning in the early 1900s during the advent of the silent film era.& & Publisher's green cloth, with gilt titles, floral stamps in black on the front board and spine, gilt top page edges. Very Good condition. Slight spine lean, extremities bumped and rubbed, light fraying at the spine ends, front hinge split but solid, faint dampstaining to a few leaves, and slight wrinkle to the front board. The autographed letter is lightly toned and has a few small chips at the corners. A nice example of an early piece by this understated author, and a most uncommon autograph.

      London: Leonard Smithers, 1898. Quarto. From a first edition limited to 1000 copies, this is one of 100 deluxe copies bound in full vellum, with an extra, enlarged set of the illustrations tipped-in. Beardsley lived only long enough to complete eight out of the 24 drawings planned. There are actually six large pictorial initials, plus the frontispiece and the cover design. The illustrations accompanying the initials are unusual for Beardsley in that they are shaded drawings. Only the frontispiece is a line drawing, with intricate hatching. Fine in vellum boards, which are slightly bowed, with Beardsley's all-over design in gilt.

Very Good+in original binding. 1898 printed on title page; 16 advertising pages at end of book ("Mr. William Heinemann's Autumn Announcements mdcccxcvii"). An exceptional copy; clean, complete, securely bound. Small owner name stamped in purple on front pasted endpaper, no other markings. Pages, edges rough cut, are clean and near fine with very occasional small, light spottings and a few light fox speckles to bottom edge. Four leaves have short creases to top corners, another four have short closed tears at top edge; there are a few tiny closed tears and nicks to thumb edges. Endpapers slightly foxed but cleaner than usual for this title. Gray cloth hardcover is clean, lightly toned along spine and edge. Title stamped on black on front cover and spine, publisher monogram on back cover. Stamping is strong. Cover edges lightly shelf worn but cloth is not frayed; corners tips a bit rubbed but sharp. Binding is firm, hinges intact, no tears or cracks. There is a shallow gap between pages 144/145 (where two gatherings meet) but the binding has not split - all pages are secure, the binding solid. Endpapers intact. Spine and boards are straight. Page trim measures 5 x 7-1/4". viii + 304 pages plus 16 ad pages.. First British Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good+/No Jacket. 8vo.

        Calendario dell' Anno 1899, together with original artwork

      Rome: Società Editrice Dante Alighieri, 1898. Oblong octavo. (60)pp. One of 200 copies. Illustrated with seventeen chromolithographed plates, which accompany a series of musical arrangements by Salvatore Saya, with lyrics by the Italian poet Ugo Fleres. Together with twenty-one of Giuseppe Cellini’s original watercolor and ink drawings for Calendario dell’Anno, 1899, of which three were not used, and one is a duplicate. Each measures about 9 1/2 by 8 3/4 inches; the panels for the months of the year have, in almost all cases, placeholder text handwritten by the artist that was replaced by type in the final version. Cellini is perhaps best known for the frescoes that decorate the Galleria Sciarra in Rome, which blend influences of English Pre-Raphaelitism with the artistic traditions of the Italian Renaissance. These lovely, intricate calendar illustrations also clearly demonstrate the sway that the Renaissance aesthetic had on the Arts and Crafts movement, with elaborate floral and foliate designs, initials decorated with interlacing, and symbols for each sign of the zodiac, all in regal shades of red, blue, green, and gold. In the design for April, daisies bloom and birds perch amidst the interlace of branches that adorn the letter “A.” Printed Calendario bound in stab-sewn printed stiff card wrappers, which show wear and tears to the spine and the top of the front cover where it meets the spine. Drawings mounted to heavy paper backings, which show some wear to edges and have holes through top corners where they were once affixed to a surface.

Gilt-dotted raised bands. Four green morocco grape leaf inlays and fine gilt stems to compartments. Turn-ins with triple ruled borders and three gilt-stamped grape leaves to outer corner. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Gilt rolled edges. Wee owner's label to front free endpaper. A fine copy.Robert Riviere (1808–1882), bookbinder, was born in London in 1808. On leaving school, in 1824, he apprenticed with Messrs. Allman, the booksellers, of Princes Street, Hanover Square. In 1829 he established himself at Bath as a bookseller, and subsequently as a bookbinder in a small way, employing only one man. But not finding sufficient scope for his talents in that city, he came in 1840 to London, where he commenced business as a bookbinder. The excellent workmanship and good taste displayed in his bindings gradually won for them the appreciation of connoisseurs, and he was largely employed by the Duke of Devonshire, Mr. Christie-Miller, Captain Brooke, and other great collectors. He also bound for the queen and the royal family. In the Great Exhibition of 1851 he exhibited several examples of his skill, and he obtained a medal.The bindings of Riviere, in the quality of the materials, the forwarding, and in the finish and delicacy of the tooling are deserving of almost unqualified commendation. His bindings are wonderful specimens of artistic taste, skill, and perseverance. Riviere bequeathed his business to this son-in-law in 1880, and the name of the firm was changed to Riviere & Son. Bayntun of Bath acquired Riviere c. 1930.

Limited edition of 1060 copies, this copy numbered 1042, one of 1000 copies on 'papier vélin'. A delightful and informative fin-de-siecle work concentrating on the way art was being applied to the decoration of the exterior of books of all kinds: from the illustrations on paper wrappers, to the decoration of cloth publishers bindings to the unique work being produced by the fine-art binders of the period. The designs for wrappers are ably represented by the charming art nouveau design by Louis Rhead for the original covers of the present work (here bound in at the front and back), and the leather binding by J. Kauffmann, particularly the spine, offers a fine demonstration of beautiful design and the flawless finishing of the best quality fine-art binders. The illustrations in the text supply numerous other examples from all three categories, highlighting the best work of the period.

A beautiful book that is the first American reprint of this short lived publication by the Pre-Raphaelite founders. The preface by Mosher calls The Germ Òthe youthful respiratory organ of the Pre-Raphaelites.Ó He says the young men who created this Òforlorn little periodicalÓ were Òpoor, unknown, and in advance discredited.Ó Yet, their ultimate influence over the art and literature of their day was important and lasting. The introduction is from James Ashcroft Noble's "A Pre-Raphaelite Magazine" as revised in his The Sonnet in England and Other Essays (London: Matthews & Lane, 1893) which Mosher heavily annotated in a series of footnotes. The contributions included the first appearance of RossettiÕs Hand and Soul, and The Blessed Damozel as well as several poems by Christina Rossetti written under the pseudonym Ellen Alleyn . The book also contains four reproductions of etchings by Holman Hunt, Ford Madox Brown, James Collinson, and W. H. Deverell. Beige flexible boards with paper wrappers with red title to spine and front panel. The honeysuckle border on the front cover of the wrapper was designed and cut on wood by Charles Ricketts and is taken from an edition of 310 copies of the Vale PressÕs The Poems of Sir John Suckling, 1896. The text is pristine and the pages include numerous headpieces, tailpieces, and decorated initials. Original light green ribbon marker intact. Contents are very fine. The frontispiece and the front wrapper are both lithographies by Bonnard. The book was printed in 1000 copies, of which 200 were numbered copies on Holland paper, and 800 unnumbered copies on vellum paper. This copy belongs to the latter group. "Only Mellerio perceived color lithography as the most consistent common denominator of the avant-garde, regardless of philosophical or aesthetic bent - symbolist, pointillist or realist. His book systematically supported this view with critical analyses of the work of more than forty artists while documenting the publishers, the printers, and publications which promoted the medium." Ibels co-founded "Le Sifflet" with the specific purpose of promoting the revision of the Dreyfus case. In "Allons-y !" he published all of his illustrations up to this point, recounting the events. The frontispiece, an army officer kicking the scales of justice, is a rejoinder to Jean-louis Forain's anti-Dreyfus cover for an opposing journal, "Psst...!", which shows a Dreyfusard lawyer kicking an army officer's hat. Emile Zola's open letter to the French president presented an eloquent defence for the French captain Alfred Dreyfus who had been convicted as a German spy in 1894 and sent into life confinement on the socalled Devil's Island. Dreyfus was a jew, and the case had a clear anti-Semitic character. With his J'Accuse article, Emile Zola caused renewed sympathy for Dreyfus and severe moral headaches among the political establishment of France. As a result, Dreyfus was pardoned in 1899. He was, however, not released until 1906, but nevertheless served his country with honour in World War 1. The J'Accuse article has been canonized as one of - if not the - most effective pieces of political journalism ever

The rare first edition of Nietzsche's poems and maxims, the first complete collection of his poetry, which furthermore constitutes the first appearance of all nine, properly corrected, "Dionysian Dithyrambs" in one volume.This one of 1.000 copies printed of the first run, without "Second Edition" on the title-page, as the other 1.000 copies of the first edition had. According to Elizabeth Förster-Nietzsche, Nietzsche's sister who has assembled the present collection "[t]his collection of poems and maxims shows the entire poetic development of my brother over a period of 30 years. It begins at a time when the earliest stuttering poetical expression has been overcome and ends with the highest rising of the poetic spirit, who in order to find words can now only speak in dithyrambs." (own translation, from the Introduction, p. [XIII]). Numerous of the poems have never been printed before, and many are printed from the original manuscripts, which Elizabeth had in her possession.Though Nietzsche is primarily understood and remembered as one of the greatest philosophers of all times, his poems occupy a central place in his literary production and many of them (e.g. the Dithyrambs) are intimately linked with the philosophy for which he is so famous today. Furthermore, the present volume underlines the popular modern view of Nietzsche as the not only philosophical, but also literary and artistic genious. The first edition of the work is difficult to find and is rarely seen for sale.THE PRESENT COPY HAS BELONGED TO FREIDRICH JODL (1849-1914), the famous German philosopher and contemporary of Nietzsche, and bears his signature as well as a 4-line dated presentation-inscription to front free end-paper. Jodl ranks as one of the most significant representatives of German expressionism and is still remembered for his original ontological works with their constant focus on empiricism as the only true strand of philosophy. He has also written a number of important works within the history of philosophy and ethics, psychology and aesthetics, which for decades counted as standard works, and he is among the first to develop the intellectual environment that ultimately led to, among many other things, the founding of the Vienna Circle. His main task was to develop and spread a purely naturalistic ethics free of any religious or metaphysical elements, and he is considered a modern "Enlightenment philosopher", whose consistent empiricism, well-founded philosophical ideas, optimistic theories of culture, ethics, the value of life & the progress of man inspired many later thinkers and furthermore helped promote important political and social ideas, such as free popular education, etc. His main works, which are now standard works within ethics and psychology, and which were printed over and over again, are "Geschichte der Ethik als philosophischer Wissenschaft", in which he presents man's cultural development as the process of liberation from religious and metaphysical ideas and the change from a theocentric to an anthropocentric foundation of ethics. This work is followed up by his purely epirically founded "Lehrbuch der Psychologie", which grounds the same ideas psychologically. After having been Privatdzent in Munich, he was named professor of philosophy at the German University in Prague, and in 1896 he accepted a professorship of philosophy at the University of Vienna. He was greatly successful in Vienna and was considered the most prominent liberal professor here, whose numerous lectures and articles against the reigning "Ultramintanismus" and the clerical influence in schools and universities found great resonance with scholars and students. He had a huge number of followers, not only at the university, but also in the public, as a political figure as well. He is partly to thank for the emergence of an intellectual climate in Vienna in the 20th century, which later led to Neopositivism and the founding of the Vienna Circle."We need no other mediator between us and nature except our understanding and a courageous will, nor any mystery behind nature to console us for her; we are alone with nature, and we feel secure because we possess intellect and she behaves according to laws" (Jodl, Vom wahren und vom falschen Idealismus, p. 40)

First editions of the announcements of the discoveries of the 2 elements Polonium and Radium."Inspired by the research of Becquerel (her teacher and friend) in radioactivity, Mme. Curie and her husband Pierre, worked in the laboratories of the Sorbonne upon uranium and thorium. They also observed that certain substances exhibited much greater radioactivity than the amount of these substances indicated. Further investigation led to the discovery of a new element, polonium, in pitchblende from Bohemia. In december 1898, it was disclosed that compounds of barium extracted from pitchblende contained a new radioactive substance a million times more active than that of the uranium of Becquerel; it was named "radium". From several tons of pitchblende, they were able to extract a decigram of pure radium in 1902, and determined its atomic weight at 225. In the following year the Nobel prize was awarded jointly to Becquerel and the Curies." (Bernt Dibner).         Dent's Mediaeval Towns series. Complete in 39 volumes including the extremely scarce 'Santiago de Compostela' issue.

      Hardcover. Very Good. Original publisher's gilt decorated grey-blue cloth. Each with a frontispiece and various illustrations and fold-out maps and plans. Thirty volumes of this set are first editions. A number of volumes exhibit some browning to the spines and endpapers with some occasional light spotting. Six have neat inked former owner names or inscriptions to a preliminary leaf and another volume (Jerusalem) a strip missing from the top of the front endpaper. One volume (Seville) is a former ex-lending library copy, with a sticker to the front pastedown and three small, partially erased numerals to the base of the spine. Another volume (Nuremburg) has a tear to the rear gutter and backstrip. The remainder form a lovely crisp set and include the extremely scarce Santiago de Compostela issue, written by C.Gasquoine Hartley and published in 1912 but withdrawn and pulped following accusations of plagiarism and excised from all subsequent advertising materials. Three of the later volumes retain their dust wrappers. This series was inspired by travels that Joseph Malaby Dent had undertaken during the 1890's. It began in 1898 with Perugia and other cities were added rapidly through to 1912 when the Great War (and possibly the controversy surrounding the Santiago de Compostela volume) resulted in a break until 1923 after which the final five volumes were published. From a first edition limited to 1000 copies, this is one of 100 deluxe copies bound in full vellum, with an extra, enlarged set of the illustrations tipped-in. Beardsley lived only long enough to complete eight out of the 24 drawings planned. There are actually six large pictorial initials, plus the frontispiece and the cover design. The illustrations accompanying the initials are unusual for Beardsley in that they are shaded drawings. Only the frontispiece is a line drawing, with intricate hatching. Fine in vellum boards, which are slightly bowed, with Beardsley's all-over design in gilt.

      1898. No Dust Jacket. Voigt, Woldemar (1850-1919). Collection of 21 offprints, as listed below. Various sizes. V.p., 1898-1914. Original wrappers or without wrappers as issued; see below for detailed condition statements. From the library of Nobel laureate Henri Becquerel (1852-1908) and his son Jean (1878-1953), with characteristic gummed labels on most items; 5 of the offprints bear either presentation inscriptions from Voigt or Henri Becquerel's signature. Boxed. First Separate Editions. Voigt's most important research interests centered on the understanding of crystals, the Zeeman effect and the electron theory. After being appointed ordinary professor of physics at Gottingen in 1883, Voigt "not only pursued theoretical studies of the properties of crystals but also undertook a host of very delicate experimental investigations in which the physical properties of many crystalline substances were measured. [His researches brought] great orderliness . . . to the understanding of crystals. The elastic, thermal, electric and magnetic properties of crystals were ordered in magnitudes of three types: scalar, vector, and tensor. In fact, it was Voigt who in 1898 had introduced the term 'tensor' into the vocabulary of mathematical physics" (DSB). In 1887 Voigt discovered the Lorentz transformations, which he published in a theoretical paper on the Doppler principle (not present here); these transformations (which Einstein developed independently of both Lorentz and Voigt) played a crucial role in Einstein's special theory of relativity. This collection of 21 offprints, representing about one-tenth of the papers Voigt published during his career, is from the library of Henri Becquerel and his son Jean, both of whom performed important research on crystals, with the latter's scientific career being primarily devoted to examination of the effect of a magnetic field on a crystal's optical properties. Several of the papers in this collection cite the work of both Henri and Jean. Four of the offprints bear Voigt's presentation inscriptions to either Henri or Jean; see in particular nos. 14 and 15, two copies of the same paper inscribed to father and son respectively. First edition of the first Dutch translation of this very important classic by Karl Marx, which, due to its aim to be a popular exposition of his central theories of capitalism and the economic relationships between workers and capitalists, became one of the most generally influential and widely read of Marx' works. "Wage Labour and Capital" was originally written as a series of newspaper articles in 1847 and was first published, however only fragmentarily, in the form of five articles in April 1849 in the "Neue Rheinische Zeitung". Because of the political conditions, the printing of the series had to be ended, and thus only these five articles appeared, as there was no sign of the rest of it between the papers of Marx that were found after his death. The work did not appear again until 1881. In 1891 Engels published a re-worked version of the article, which took into account Marx' later developments in his economic theory (for instance Engels inserted the distinction between "labour" and "labour-power", which Marx did not make in the original version), and during the 1890'ies the work appeared in numerous languages and in an enormous amount of editions. Marx' seminal theories that are made easily accessible in this important publication include his Labour Theory of Value, his Theory of Concentration of Capital, his Theory of Alienation etc., which were all later developed in the "Capital", three fundamental theories that have influenced all later economical-political thought. The first Dutch edition also contains one leaf that presents the program of the Dutch-Social-Democratic Party ("Beginsel-Program der Sociaal-Demokratische Arbeiderspartij in Nederland"), which of course owes much to Marx' work. The Dutch edition is very scarce
