Autograph letter signed to his sister Ellen ("My dear Nelly")

7 Clifton Terrace, Dorking, 17 November, 1898. One page, octavo (176 × 115 mm), conjugate leaf removed, trace of mount on verso. Horizontal crease where folded centrally. A note to his sister: "I thought I remembered sending, or bringing, the Michelet to Wakefield. But I suppose I was mistaken. The vol. has somehow been lost, unfortunately. Affectionately yours, George Gissing". Gissing had last visited his family in Wakefield in September 1898. Michelet, best known for his monumental Histoire de France (1833–67) was also author of a number of works promoting the romantic view of nature. Gissing disapproved of Michelet's generalisations about women as the weaker sex, but was otherwise a fan, read many of his books, and described him as "a great and sympathetic genius" (20 November 1898, Collected Letters, VII, pp. 231–2).

L'Ermitage - Revue artistique et littéraire. Année complète 1898.

Bureaux de la Revue 1898 - - Bureaux de la Revue, Paris 1898, 11,5x18,5cm, 2 volumes reliés. - Edition originale. Internationales Kaiser-Jubilaums-Schachturnier Wien 1898

Wien: Verlag des Wiener Schach-Club, 1898 xix+351 pages with diagrams and table. Quarto (10 1/4" x 7 1/4") bound in brown cloth with brown lettering to spine and original wrapper cover laid on front cover. (Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana: 5250) 1st edition. 1898 was highlighted by the great Imperial Jubilee Tournament, organized to commemorate the 50 year reign of Emperor Franz Josef I and to mark the 25th anniversary fo the first international chess tournament held in Vienna. Led by the example of Baron von Rothschild, wealthy members of the newly formed Vienna Chess Club contributed funds to assure the success of the huge competition. Most of the Word's chess elite (Lasker and Charousek did not participate), representing the United States, England, France, Germany, Hungary, Russia and host nation Austria, were on hand in the lovely "Kaiserstadt" to participate in this long, strenuous test of chess skills. The Spartan playing schedule called for five games per week (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday); Thursday was reserved for adjourned games, and Sunday a day of rest. A number of the participants complained about the very short rest period. Eleven of them went so far as to draw up a written petition requesting a longer break on the grounds that the continued strain could endanger their health. The tournament committee found itself unable to act when Pillsbury protested th action. (Ironically the American master would be close to physical exhaustion in the closing rounds of his head-to-head duel with Tarrasch, who was nearly 11 years older). Even greater expenditures of time and energy would have been required had not the veteran A Schwarz. co-winner of the Wiesbaden and Graz tournaments of 1880, abandoned the struggle in the eighth round - following which his games were struck from the table. Tarrasch (+21 -2 =13) and Pillsbury (+24 -5 =7) finished in an historic first-place tie (27 1/2 points). They were trailed by Janowski (+22 -7 =7) with 25 1/2, Steinitz (+18 -7 =11) with 23 1/2 and Schlechter, once again the youngest participant, with 21 1/2 points. Tarrasch's triumph gave convincing proof that the great pedagogue's art had not ended with his disappointing showing at Budapest two years earlier. Finishing in a tie with Pillsbury after 36 gruelling rouds, the German physician proceeded to defeat his younger American rival in a tense four-game playoff (+1 -0 =1). Tarrasch received 6,000 kroner for his effort - while the exhausted younger man found solace in hist prize of 4,000 kroner and undiminished admiration of the Viennese chess community. (Goldman: Carl Schlechter! Caissa Editions) Condition: Pages uncut, rebound else a very good copy of a scarce tournament title. . First Edition. Very Good. Quarto.

        Falling Prices and The Remedy

Boston: George Book Publishing Co.. Hardcover. 231 pages. History certainly does repeat itself as the following statement appears upon the title page: "Equity and justice demand that the merchant, manufacturer, farmer, and wage-earner shall receive as much consideration at the hands of the law-makers as is accorded to those who deal in money."         Lettres de deces DEATH ANNOUNCEMENTS

Brussels, [letters date from 1898-1937]. Printer’s sample book with 43 tipped-in examples of funereal and memorial letters dated between 1898 and 1937. Rare collection of interesting examples of letters of condolence and sympathy to send to the bereaved. When the family of a deceased wanted to step up above placing the same old notice in the obituary pages of the local newspaper, they sent out formal printed letters of their loss. And here we have a slew of samples. Letters are directed to family friends, acquaintances, the nobility and landed gentry, etc., printed by specific name to whom they are sent. The text mentions the deceased (obviously), with the usual added supplements (loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, etc.) After this information is imparted, one can create their unique letter, including, for example, when and where the burial took (or will take) place, additional funeral information, when mass will be celebrated, and related facts that might be important. Of particular interest are the different ways of starting your letter (still is the most difficult part today). As an example, you might wish to start: “We have the honor to inform you of the painful loss of....” or your “It pains us to have to share the cruel loss of....” Many are quite touching. Also included are printed responses to sympathy letters.& & Van der aa (1899-1949?) was the printer and lithographer to the Court of Brussels. This collection was gathered to be used as examples for customers.& &

THE OPEN BOAT AND OTHER TALES OF ADVENTURE

New York: Doubleday & McClure Co.,. 1898. Octavo, pp. [1-8] [1-2] 3-336,. original pictorial green cloth, front and spine panels stamped in dark green and silver.. Just a touch of rubbing to silver stamping and minor bubbling of. cloth on front panel, a fine copy. In a custom half leather slipcase. (some rubbing to spine panel). A very attractive copy. (#79733). First edition. Crane's best collection of short fiction, including several of his most powerful and best known stories. "The Open Boat," one of Crane's finest short stories, "was based upon his own experiences on his way to Cuba as a correspondent during the filibustering expeditions preceding the Cuban War. The emotions and reactions of four men in an open boat after a wreck are given with an insight and a fidelity to fact that makes the story memorable." - Quinn, American Fiction, p. 536. The collection also contains several tales based on Crane's western trip in 1895 to Mexico via Nebraska, Louisiana, Arkansas and Texas, including his archetypal "The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky," in which the mythical Old West yields to the reality of civilization. The fine "Death and the Child," a war story set during the Turko-Greek War in 1897, is "clearly a version of THE RED BADGE OF COURAGE, which it resembles in the incident of panicky flight, in its implication of nature in a drama of self discovery, and in its imagery of the psychological distress that motivates the hero. But it is also like "The Open Boat" in that its protagonist is in a measure -- up to the moment of panic -- introspective and contemplative." - James B. Colvert, "Stephen Crane," DLB 12 (1982), p. 122. BAL 4079 (noted spine imprint A, no priority established). Wright (III) 1256.

        The Open Boat

New York: Doubleday & McClure. 1898. First. First edition. Tiny crease to the corner of a few pages near the end of the book, and the silver decoration a trifle worn at the base of the spine, a nice, near fine copy with boards designed by American Arts and Crafts designer Will Bradley. An important collection of stories including the title story, a masterpiece of naturalism based on Crane's own harrowing experience of being shipwrecked while on his way to cover the war in Cuba (an experience which probably once and for all destroyed his already fragile health). The collection also includes "The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky" which was the basis for one-half of the two-part film Face to Face featuring Robert Preston. Increasingly scarce. .

Very slghtly soiled, head and tail of the spine a little crumpled, corners a touch bumped, front hinge just exposed after the free endpaper, some light browning, contemporary ownership inscription to the front free endpaper, inked ownership stamp to the verso of the frontispiece, a very good copy. Frontispiece portrait and 6 maps, 4 of them folding and coloured, 4 full-page. First edition, home issue, only printing, second state of Churchill's first book, this copy with the errata slip at p.1, catalogue dated 3/98. Relates his exploits with the Malakand field force, led by Sir Bindon Blood, on the Northwest Frontier of India in 1897, based on Churchill's despatches to the Daily Telegraph and the Pioneer Mail. As Churchill was still in India when the book was published, the final editing was undertaken by his uncle Moreton Frewen, husband of Clara Jerome, Jennie's elder sister, resulting in numerous small errors which were corrected the following year in the Silver Library edition.         The Story of the Malakand Field Force. An Episode of Frontier War

London. Longmans, Green and Co., 1898, 1898. Colonial Issue of Churchill's first book. Intended for sale in India and the Colonies. 8vo. Original publisher's olive green cloth decorated in black, titled in gilt to spine. Clean and sharp, slightly rippled to rear panel. A very handsome copy. Frontis. portrait of Major-General Blood, with tissue guard, two colour folding maps and four full page map plates. Internally clean, contemporary magazine images of Chakdara Bridge and the Malakand Pass stuck to the front and rear pastedowns. Ownership blind stamp to fly which has pinholed the flyleaf at one point. There is an ink ownership to the front fly which has been crossed out. The lower edge of the page block has suffered very marginal damp staining, the remnants of which can be seen on the lower margins of the maps (due to their being printed on slightly coated paper). Altogether a handsome copy, very good indeed. WSC's literary debut concerns the military action on the Northwest Frontier (an area now part of Pakistan), in 1897. Churchill participated in the campaign as a second lieutenant in the cavalry; he volunteered for the post, having become bored of playing polo in India. Woods A1(a)
