        White Stains

[Amsterdam:] [printed by Binger Bros for Leonard Smithers,], 1898. The Literary Remains of George Archibald Bishop a Neuropath of the Second Empire. Quarto. Original black cloth, white ankh or crux ansata device at head of spine, lettered in white on front cover, untrimmed. Head and tail of spine creased, a few marks to covers, offsetting to half-title, light stain at head of Contents leaf. A very good, clean, copy. First edition, sole printing, of one of Crowley's rarest book: 100 copies were printed (this copy unnumbered) and "many [were] destroyed by H. M. Customs in 1924" (Yorke). Copac records just 2 copies in British and Irish institutional libraries (British Library, Warburg Institute) and OCLC adds just 3 copies worldwide (Indiana, Syracuse, Texas). "[Leonard] Smithers was the logical publisher for Crowley's next book, White Stains (1898). Although tame by today's standards, some of its pieces - such as 'A Ballad of Passive Paederasty,' 'With Dog and Dame,'and 'Necrophilia' - required the seasoned hands of an underground publisher. Because of its content, Smithers sent the book to Amsterdam to be typeset by Binger Bros. Crowley published it anonymously, and as with Aceldama [his first book, also published in 1898], only one hundred copies were printed. The book... was a reaction to Austrian police doctor Richard Freiherr von Krafft-Ebing's (1840-1902) study of sexual aberrations, Psycopathia Sexualis (1893): the book that coined the term 'masochism' after the fiction of fellow Austrian Leopold Ritter von Sacher-Masoch (1836-1895). Although Krafft-Ebing translated the racier sections of his text into Latin, the book became a sensation among erudite pornographers everywhere. Crowley, determined to do a better job of explaining the nature of sexual deviance, wrote a story from the perspective of a poet who goes astray, taking on various vices and ultimately committing murder... Although White Stains has been hastily dubbed pornographic, it actually belongs to Decadent literature, with poetry a natural style for Crowley to choose" (Richard Kaczynski, Perdurabo: The Life of Aleister Crowley, 2010, p. 49).

The Lanthorn Book, being a small collection of Tales and Verses read at the Sign of The Lanthorn ?

New York: 126 William Street, 1898. No. 120 of 125 copies, signed by Crane at the end of his contribution. Illustrated. Title page printed in red and black. Printed on rectos only on folded sheets, unpaginated. 1 vols. Small folio. Original quarter reverse calf and green cloth, pictorial label on upper board. Front joint worn as usual, else a fine copy. Cloth slipcase and chemise. No. 120 of 125 copies, signed by Crane at the end of his contribution. Illustrated. Title page printed in red and black. Printed on rectos only on folded sheets, unpaginated. 1 vols. Small folio. A Stephen Crane Rarity, Signed. The only "signed and limited edition" of a book by Stephen Crane, the Lanthorn Book was issued for members of the Lanthorn Club on William Street in New York. It contains the story "The Wise Men" which was collected in "The Open Boat" in the same year. No priority has been established (according to Blanck) because it is not known in what month the Lanthorn book was published. According to Starrett it was the intention of the Club to have each contributor sign his piece and he writes: "but it is asserted that only between ten and fifteen copies" were signed by Crane. This theory has lately been disproven in that a much larger number of copies examined contain Crane's signature. BAL II p. 337; Starrett 12

ARCHIVE OF ALEXANDER'S LETTERS FROM THE AMERICAN WEST TO HIS FAMILY IN WEST VIRGINIA, 1898-1911, AND VARIOUS OTHER MATERIALS.; In a volume handwritten by his son, William Alexander, are 93 letters written by Henry as he traveled through the West "seeking his fortune."

1898. Original manuscript. Original Cloth. Very Good. One volume, octavo, bound in red cloth, hand-lettered cover and spine titles. The 400 pages of text are printed in a neat hand, excepting four typewritten pages. Interpolated are maps, some printed, some hand-drawn by HRA himself and pasted in, these latter showing the location of his camp and the set-up inside his and Blanche's cabin, the plan of the Ohio farmhouse, etc., and there are a few other small pieces cut out from the letters and pasted in, as well as small snapshots of the R.R. station in Huntington, the "Washington Ave. house" in 1912 and the "farmhouse" in Chesapeake, OH, along with a barn for it that "father and William built.". Compiled and recopied in 1954 by HRA's son William, the volume starts with newclips: an article on "Great Salt Lake" (Salt Lake City Daily Register, March 1, 1898) "sent home" by Father (HRA) who "apparently…didn't believe all of it."; an obituary for HRA, from the Huntington Advertiser, Huntington, WV, June 27, 1935; and an obituary for William Arbuckle Alexander (HRA's father) from the Christian Observer, April 29, 1885. Next is a table of contents (1 page), then an 8-page subject index to the letters, and a 6-page index (by place and date). ~~ In so-labeled "Part One", there are a total of 93 letters (1898-1911) written by HRA when he is in the West, most addressed to his mother and they comprise the bulk--about 300 pages--of the volume. These are followed by 6 letters written when he's back in WV in 1912, and 8 when he's in Chesapeake, OH in 1912-13. Next come 15 copies of letters written by HRA's wife, Blanche, dated 1898-1903. "Part Two" consists of 27 letters written by HRA to son William, mostly while he's at college, dating 1920-26; and "Part Three" consists of 9 pages of transcribed postcards sent home by William in the summer of 1934, during his car trip through the mountains of WV, VA and NC. The first 93 letters offer a unique picture of life in the "Wild West", written by a young West Virginian who had to quit college after one year at Morgantown due to his father's illness. Henry Alexander [HRA] then moved to Charleston and at age 20 became the youngest justice of the peace ever in West Virginia, before returning to the family farm at Frazier's Bottom, WV. When his father died in 1885, however, HRA was free to follow his dream and head west for the gold rush to the Klondike, expecting to make his fortune and settle in Alaska. The letters start as he is "on the tramp" in Kansas, working his way west at a series of unskilled jobs, and there are vivid descriptions of cowboy life on the prairie and portraits of life in a number of western towns, some truly "wild and woolly." His travels include stops of varying lengths in Kiowa and Dodge City in Kansas; Little Rock, Arkansas City, and Hot Springs, Arkansas (where he provides an interesting description of the health spa facilities and their denizens, including himself); Pueblo, Colorado; Salt Lake City, Utah (a short side trip, featuring descriptions and opinions on Mormon sights and life); Sacramento; Portland, Oregon (a fascinating description of the "Klondikers" setting off from there); and Seattle, Coulee City, Wilbur, Clark, Colville Reservation, Republic, Belcher (Camp), and Keller, in Washington (his final destination). They conclude with letters written back in WV and OH in 1911-13, but those occupy only the final 40 of those 300 pages.

The Seven Lamps of Architecture. By John Ruskin? With illustrations drawn by the author

Small 8vo. Orpington and London: George Allen, 1898. Small 8vo, 440 pages, 14 plates. Full plain dark blue crushed morocco, backstrip flat with raised bands, titled in gilt and with the date 1898 at the foot in gilt. A little scuffed where the raised bands join the covers, and at the head and foot of the backstrip; slight graze to lower inside front turn-in. From the library of Richard Cobden Sanderson and bound at his father?s bindery - though unsigned the style and lettering is unmistakeable. Marion Tidcome (to whom I showed this binding) lists 4 bindings on this title but not this one. No author had more titles bound by the Doves Bindery than Ruskin; this binding, very simple and plain with the olive headbands and the visible stitching along the hinges with the paste-down flap unhidden, is a good example of a standard Doves Binding with no ornamentation or decoration, but rather elegant in its simplicity and in my experience seldom available.

Hardcover, bound in the original publisher's maroon full cloth, bit soiled and frayed in places, spine gilt; joints and part of spine mended for splits, spine-ends bumped or chipped, maps and first and last leaves foxed. In good overall condition, very good interior. - - First edition. Sir Frederick Samuel Augustus Bourne (1854-1940) was Consul in charge of the Blackburn Commercial Mission. Between October 1896 and June 1897, members of the Blackburn Commission travelled some 4,300 miles through the interior of south and central China. They collected detailed information on all factors relating to how the Chinese met ?their own wants in the matter of textiles?, including material on marketing, distribution, indigenous handicraft production, taxation and ?local customs and usage as they might affect [the United Kingdom's] textile industry?. The Commission also investigated in detail remote or less known parts of the country, and provided an account of means of communication by land and water. The report was published in two lengthy sections by The North-East Lancashire Press Company in Blackburn, a very rare imprint. The first part was compiled by Bourne; the second by H. Neville and H. Bell. See further: ?Commerce and Capitalism in Chinese Societies?, Gary G. Hamilton (London, Routledge, 2006). Bourne published also, among others, ?The Lo-Fou mountains: An excursion? (Hongkong, 1895); and ?Trade of central and southern China? (Shanghai, 1898).

L'Ermitage - Revue artistique et littéraire Année complète 1898 EDITION ORIGINALE

Paris: Bureaux de la Revue, 1898. Fine. Bureaux de la Revue, Paris 1898, 11,5x18,5cm, 2 volumes reliés. - Originale.binding editor to bradel half dark green calico, smooth back, as part of black morocco, gilt small iron and double gold in net queue.Douze numbers from January to December 1898. conservées.Chaque number Covers Edition is illustrated with a literary xylographie.Contributions Boylesve Rene, Henri Ghéon, André Gide, Francis Jammes, etc.Publication founded in 1890 by Henri Mazel, the Hermitage is a monthly magazine owned by the first wave of small magazines Symbolists. In 1895, the magazine between declining and its new director, Edouard Ducoté, uses André Gide. The editorial team is reduced to twelve regular contributors, friends Gide. After many difficulties and attempts to overhaul the editorial team (Remy de Gourmont to make a pass and will also contribute financially in 1905), the Hermitage breathed his last in 1906. The Hermitage manages to detach other important magazines of the time as the Mercure de France or La Revue blanche because it boasts eclectic and apolitical; on its cover, you can also read that it is "the only journal that deals with politics or sociology [but] which deals only with literature and art." His illustrations are small art nouveau, and, true to his state of mind symbolist, employees are more interested in poetry than novel. Tiphaine Samoyault, French literary critic, says that the Hermitage expresses a transition straddles the fin de siècle aestheticism and poetry avant-garde of the 1910s. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.

Five Years in Siam from 1891 to 1896

John Murray, London 1898 - Two volumes, with 15 full-page plates, nine maps (four folding) and numerous illustrations in the text; foxing to endpapers otherwise a very good set in the original decorated cloth. An important book on late-nineteenth-century Thailand. Smyth spent some years in Thailand as director of the Department of Mines, and his well-illustrated account of the country, then under the rule of King Chulalongkorn, describes the prosperous last years free of colonial controls. 'Thailand presented a singular contrast to the rest of Southeast Asia in the late nineteenth century. Thai leaders followed policies that revealed a remarkable capacity to gain the greatest benefit from the new and intrusive element of European power' (Osborne, Southeast Asia).Within only a few years Thailand was to lose part of its country to French colonial aspirations, and in 1909 it lost four Malay states to the British.         An A B C of Golf, by a Victim

New York: The Blanchard Press, 1898. Fifth edition. Illustrated throughout with humorous lithographic drawings and lettered captions by the author. 1 vols. 11 x 8-1/4 inches. Original lettered burlap wrappers, multcolored paper label of a golfer on upper cover, cover edges slightly frayed, first and last few pages loose, two with slight chips, but overall an attractive copy of a fragile work. Fifth edition. Illustrated throughout with humorous lithographic drawings and lettered captions by the author. 1 vols. 11 x 8-1/4 inches. Humorous 1898 Golfing Alphabet. A most amusing alphabet, in rhymed couplets, mostly focusing on the misadventures of neophyte (or simply inept) golfers; printed on gray stapled coated stock with an inherently fragile burlap cover, this is a book almost doomed to self-distruct; the publisher's advertisement herein describes a hardier format, including a buckram binding, which presumably replaced earlier copies such as this one.         J'accuse! in L'Aurore EDITION ORIGINALE

Paris: In l'Aurore, 1898. Fine. In l'Aurore, Paris 13 Janvier 1898, 46x72cm, en feuilles. - First edition of this historical article marking the entry into politics of intellectuals. The editorial Zola and the trial that followed, without which Dreyfus would probably never been rehabilitated, marked a turning point in the history of political engagement of intellectuals and media use as a counter power. If courage Zola inspired by the great political positions of Victor Hugo, the historical significance of his gesture is mainly due to its unusual consequences: Review of the trial, public denunciation of anti-Semitism in the military, creating the League Human Rights. The Fourth Estate has acquired acclaim! Our copy is presented in a case-shirt: black back pain and flat plexiglass shirt, black canvas frame and flat plexiglass the case. Small marginal tears expertly restored affecting the inside pages with tiny gaps letters on the front lines of the articles on page 3 of the newspaper but without reaching the "A" very slight angular minor foxing on the front page. Rare and nice copy enriched with a unique and important set of papers, articles and documents relating to the result of the Dreyfus Affair and the consequences of Zola's article showing much enthusiasm in the French press for this trial. - Official Fair Program 13, 14 and 15 July 1898, presenting a caricature anti-Dreyfus - "The Trial of Rennes - Dreyfus before the War Council Rennes" in L'Eclair (No. 3908 Wednesday, August 9, 1899) - " The Coup plot "in The Lightning (No. 3913 of Monday, August 14, 1899) -" The Assassination of Rennes - Gunshot fired at one of the lawyers of Dreyfus "(No. 3915 Wednesday 16 aoput 1899) - "The Trial of Rennes - The Deposition of Captain Lebrun-Renaud and confessions Dreyfus" in L'Eclair (No. 3932 of the Saturday, September 2, 1899) - "The Trial of Rennes - Dreyfus condemned" in L'Eclair (n ° 3941 of Monday, September 11, 1889) - An article about Colonel Henry in L'Eclair (No. 5637 Wednesday 4 Friend 1904) - "The Council of War Rennes - Session" verbatim report in Le Figaro (n 218 bis, Tuesday, August 8, 1899) - "The Council of War Rennes - Testimony of witnesses" in Le Figaro (No. 224 bis of Saturday, August 12, 1899) - "The Council of War Rennes" in Le Figaro (n 225 of Sunday, August 13, 1899) - "The Council of War Rennes - Attack against Mr. Labori" in Le Figaro (No. 226 bis of Monday, August 14, 1899) - "The Council of Rennes. - The Off. - Pleading Me Demange "in Le Figaro (No. 252 bis of Saturday, September 9, 1899) -." Contact us for any information! Autograph Note Signed

Bjornstjerne Bjornson, 1898, No binding., Book Condition: FineAn AUTOGRAPH NOTE ADDRESSED, WRITTEN, SIGNED, PLACED, and DATED FROM BJORNSTJERNE BJORNSON to William J. [Dornut?], Esq in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in response to an inquiry made by [Dornut] to Bjornstjerne in which Bjornstjerne states: "Dear Sir, Mr. Clemens Peter- / sen of [illegible] New- / York, is the best one I know / to deliver an address upon / my works and myself. // Truly Yours // Bjornson Bjornstjerne // Schwaz, Tirol, 1898 28/9". [The card measures approximately 3 1/2 inches x 5 1/2 inches and is in Fine condition with only a bit of bumping to the corners.] Norwegian author Bjornstjerne Bjornson won the 1903 Nobel Prize in Literature "as a tribute to his noble, magnificent and versatile poetry, which has always been distinguished by both the freshness of its inspiration and the rare purity of its spirit". (The third winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature, Bjornson also is celebrated in Norway for having written the Norwegian National Anthem's lyrics.) Known as the "feared dictator" of cultural and intellectual life in both Denmark and Norway in the mid-Nineteenth Century, Clemens Petersen attacked Denmark's literary establishment, turning to Norwegian writers for inspiration. Petersen proclaimed that Bjornson's novel "Synnove Solbakken" signaled a new beginning for Norwegian and Danish literature and was such a great champion of Bjornson that his ardor at times embarrassed the Norwegian. (Petersen was one of the first to recognize Ibsen's talent as well.) Bjornstjerne and Petersen were close friends and, notably, Bjornstjerne was a public defender of homosexuality. When Petersen's homosexuality became known, Petersen fled Denmark for the United States, with Bjornstjerne helping Peterson finance the trip, and the correspondence between the two men reflects their close relationship, with Bjornstjerne calling Petersen "My half-life". In our experience, both books signed by Bjornson and signed correspondence in his hand are far from common, with such items from most other Nobelists in Literature being much more readily available. The note herein described has a particularly nice subject matter as it relates to Bjornson's dear friend and champion Clemens Petersen. A Fine AUTOGRAPH NOTE ADDRESSED, WRITTEN, SIGNED, PLACED, and DATED FROM BJORNSTJERNE BJORNSON and REFERRING TO HIS DEAR FRIEND AND CHAMPION CLEMENS PETERSEN.
