Mission Pavie Indo-Chine 1879-1895.

Paris, Ernest Leroux [text volumes]; Augustin Challamel [atlas], 1898-1919. Ten volumes in 11 (ten text volumes and one atlas). Large 4to. (28.0 x 22.0 cm). Title pages, 3981 pp., 64 maps, 121 plates of which 33 in full colour; about 700 text figures. All original printed wrappers bound in. Uniform early 20th century half calf over marbled boards. Spines with four raised bands and gilt titles.= The complete results of the exploration of French Indo-China by Auguste Pavie. "Auguste Jean-Marie Pavie (1847-1925) was a French colonial civil servant, explorer and diplomat who was instrumental in establishing French control over Laos in the last two decades of the 19th century. After a long career in Cambodia and Cochinchina, Pavie became the first French vice-consul in Luang Prabang in 1885, eventually becoming the first Governor-General and plenipotentiary minister of the newly formed French colony of Laos" (Wikipedia). The work is separated into three parts: 'Various studies' ('Études diverses'), in three volumes, including one on the zoology of the area with contributions by several experts and with many new species that are often splendidly illustrated; 'Géographie et voyages', in seven volumes, with many fine maps, and an atlas with another ten large scale maps. Except for the atlas, all volumes are richly illustrated in the text, mainly with photos, a few volumes more dominantly with engravings. The first "études diverses" volume contains fine chromolithographs. Volume VII is very scarce. Another book-dealer states that "La presque totalité du tirage du volume VII a été détruite peu après son impression". A more detailed collation is as follows: Paris, Ernest Leroux, 1901. Frontispiece portrait, by F. Florian; [i] (errata), 1-333 pp., 137 text figures (photos). 1906. Géographie et voyages. II. Introduction par Auguste Pavie. Frontispiece portrait (of Cupet); [iii], 428 pp., 15 partly coloured maps, 50 text illustrations (wood and steel engravings, a few photos). 1902. Géographie et voyages. IV. Introduction par Auguste Pavie. xxvii, 297 pp.; 13 maps, 75 text illustrations. 1902. Géographie et voyages. V.         Eigenh. Brief mit U. [Paris, 30. I. 1898].

1898. 1 S. Kl.-8vo. (Carte Pneumatique Fermée). Mit eh. Adresse. Hierzu zählten u. a.

ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR PAINTING (AUTHOR OF MADELINE)

0, 0 - LUDWIG BEMELMANS, (AMERICAN 1898-1962) WATERCOLOR ON PAPER, 7.5¿ X 5¿ (Sight) FRAMED TO DIMENSIONS OF 17.25¿ X 14.5¿ SIGNED LOWER MIDDLE A Stunning Original Watercolor painting on paper by Ludwig Bemelmans (see bio below). A vibrant classic piece in fine condition of a portrait of a woman. Ludwig Bemelmans always considered himself an artist first, and an author second. This piece is richly toned in inks with watercolor wash in the classic Bemelmans style. Has an important, wonderful presence on the wall, presented in a gilt rubbed wood frame with a stunning richly textured linen mat (hard to see the texture in the images), and UV glass. Fully framed and glazed using 100% archival materials. The artwork is a unique original piece from a tipped in page from the book, The Donkey Inside, limited signed edition. The limited edition was an early Bemelman¿s title in which he created a unique watercolor for each book. Each individual piece was rendered on a separate page and then later ¿tipped in¿ to the book. The page was then gently removed from the book and framed (the process could easily be reversed if desired). The framed art will be accompanied by the book for provenance. Originally published in 1941, The Donkey Inside contains chapters that originally appeared in Town & Country, Vogue, Globe, and The New Yorker. Presented as a trip to Ecuador, this book is actually based on notes takes during several voyages through South America.         Eigenh. Brief mit U. ("Thomas Mann"). München, 22. XII. 1898.

1898. 3 SS. auf Doppelblatt. Gr.-4to. Verwaltungs- u. Korrespondenzakten 00/1949 A); erworben aus dem Nachlaß Maschler. T. Hinge gutter front and back strengthened, otherwise untouched with binding sound and firm throughout. A significantly rare book, as collectable for its author¿s association with the poet William Butler Yeats (her brother) and a member of William Morris¿s fraternity as it is for the charming illustrations obviously influenced by the latter¿s work.         Zadachi russkikh sotsialdemokratov / S predisloviem P. Akselroda; Izd. Rossiiskoi Sotsialdemokraticheskoi Rabochei Partii [i.e. Goals of Russian Social Democrats / With introduction by P. Axelrod; Published by Russian Social Democratic Labour Party]. Geneva, Tip. Soyuza Russkikh Sotsialdemokratov, 1898.

1898. Small 8vo (155 x 107 mm). 32 pp. Original red printed wrappers. First edition; rare. - In this brochure Lenin generalized the work experience of the League of Struggle and substantiated a programme and tactics of Russian Social Democrats. The key idea of the program was proletariat's leading role in revolutionary movement. Basically, this was the first programme of the future party that would change Russian history. 1898 was the year when the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party (RSDRP) was formed in Minsk, the party which later split into Bolsheviks and Menscheviks and eventually became the party in power in Russia for 70 years. This brochure was compiled by Lenin to gather the like-minded activists around him, and was written in exile in Siberia. It was printed anonymously in Geneva by the "Emancipation of Labour" group (Osvobozhdeniye truda) - the first Russian Marxist organization formed in Switzerland among revolutionaries from Russia (founded in 1883). The brochure was banned in the Russian Empire but found its way to readers and was widespread among progressive workers in Russia. According to the police department it was being found in the course of searches and arrests in St. Petersburg, Moscow, Smolensk, Kazan, Kiev, Irkutsk, Feodosiya et al. in 1898-1905. - Two more editions of this brochure were printed in 1902 and 1905, but without the proclamation "To workers and socialists of St. Petersburg from the League of Struggle" originally included in the manuscript and at the end of this present first edition (pp. 29-32). The proclamation was later also included in Lenin's collected works. The author's manuscript of the "Zadachi" is lost; all that survives is a ms. copy by an unknown hand which must have served as setting copy: it contains a few spelling errors which are also found in first edition and which Lenin corrected in subsequent editions. The introduction to the brochure was written by Pavel Borisovich Axelrod (1849-1928), a Russian Social Democrat who was co-founder and member of the Emancipation of Labour group. The group started their "Worker's Library" series in 1884, and the first brochure was written by Axelrod. Lenin's brochures were published in this series as well. - Lenin was arrested in 1895 and jailed for revolutionary activism. From prison he continued to direct the St. Petersburg League of Struggle for the Emancipation of the Working Class, the first political organization he ever founded. In 1897 he was sent to Siberia for three years with his wife Nadesha Krupskaya. While in exile, he established a connection with socialists in St. Petersburg and Moscow and corresponded with the Emancipation of Labour group and other socialists. He visited Geneva in 1895 to meet Plekhanov establish a connection with the group. While in Siberia, he wrote more than 30 works, the most important of which were "Zadachi" and "Razvitiye kapitalizma v Rossii" (The Development of Capitalism in Russia). In time, the brochure became an important instrument for the development of the party's programme, strategy, and tactics. Lenin's first book, containing an overview of his ideas, would come out the next year. - Exceedingly rare; OCLC locates no more than five copies in U.S. libraries. - Vertical crease down the middle of the brochure; spine reinforced with transparent archival tape. Occasional pencil marks on wrappers, some slight soiling and stains. In all, a very good copy from the library of Marcel Bekus (1888-1939), historian of Revolution and of Socialism (his ownership stamp on verso of front cover; label on recto). Born in Warsaw, Bekus participated in the Russian Revolution of 1905, after which he lived in France, where he was known for his immense collection of Russian revolutionary literature. Svodnyi katalog russkoi nelegal'noi i zapreshchennoi pechati XIX veka, no. 947. OCLC 38768070.

O kolebanii vesov. Rech' dlja obshhego sobranija X-ogo S'ezda Russkih Estestvoispytatelej v g. Kieve (avg. 1898g.). No place, 1898.

1898. Folio. Autograph manuscript. 24 ff., some leaves written on both sides. Revised by the author throughout. The original manuscript of Mendeleev's speech on "The Oscillation of the Balance", delivered at the General Meeting of the 10th Congress of Russian Naturalists in Kiev (August 1898). In his annotated bibliography of his own works, self-compiled in 1899, Mendeleev writes: "Predmet schitaju ochen' vazhnym i interesnym" ("A subject I find very important and interesting"). After the end of his teaching career at the University of St. Petersburg in 1890, Mendeleev was variously employed by the government bureaucracy. From 1892 on he was "concerned in the regulation of the system of weights and measures in Russia, a task that he discharged 'with enthusiasm, since here the purely scientific was closely interwoven with the practical.' In 1893 he was named director of the newly created Central Board of Weights and Measures, a post which he held until his death, and in connection with which he frequently traveled abroad" (DSB IX, 292). - "The great importance of Mendeleev's work", write Kayak and Smirnova, "was that in his approach to the development of the theory of balances and methods of accurate weighing he took into account the physical essence of the phenomena investigated, whereas many investigators before and even after him attempted to solve all the problems on the basis of purely mechanical conceptions [...] Mendeleev's interest in balances as the most important instrument in physical and chemical investigations was manifested from the very beginning of his scientific work. Long before his move to the Depot of Standard Weights and Measures he devoted much attention to the perfection of balances, and methods of accurate weighing. In 1861 Mendeleev succeded in observing the oscillations of balances from a distance, thereby eliminating the influence of the heat radiated by the observer on the balance; he also proposed the use of a heat distributor made of copper for a balance beam. Mendeleev's most important work on the development of the theory of balances and methods of accurate weighing was made at the Principal Bureau of Weights and Measures, where he took upon himself the entire responsibility for organizing and equipping the weight laboratory" (p. 25). - Occasional insignificant edge defects, but altogether a very well preserved manuscript. Includes a copy of the published text. Published: Sochineniya 7, pp. 577-591. Reference: Sochineniya 25, p. 752, no. 275. - Cf. L. K. Kayak and N. A. Smirnova, Theory of balances and accurate weighing in the investigations of Mendeleev and later developments, in: Izmeritel'naya Tekhnika 9 (Sept. 1969), pp. 25-28.

Signed Photographic Portrait of Rider Haggard.

Platinum print, 23 x 27cm, laid down onto sl. indented sheet, 38 x 49cm, printed with 'Histed, 42 Baker Street, London W. Signed in pencil 'H Rider Haggard 1901, Histed'. Simply framed but not glazed. The photographer Ernest Walter Histed, 1862-1947, was born in Brighton but made his reputation whilst working in Chicago and Pittsburgh. He returned to London to establish a photographic studio in New Bond Street and then 42 Baker Street. The National Portrait Gallery, although it does not hold a copy, notes that Histed made a portrait of the novelist Sir Henry Rider Haggard in 1898, by which time he was a hugely popular author. Having returned from South Africa in 1881 he decided against pursuing a career at the Bar, for which he had trained, and instead dedicated himself to writing. Having already written King Solomon's Mines, She, Allan Quatermain, Jess, Cleopatra and numerous other novels, 1898 saw the publication of Swallow (serialised in The Graphic) and Doctor Therne.

The Story of the Malakand Field Force

London & Bombay: Longmans, Green, and Co.,, 1898. An Episode of Frontier War ... With maps, plans, etc. Octavo. Bound in recent green cloth, titles to spine gilt, brown coated endpapers, red speckled edges. Housed in a custom red half morocco solander box. Frontispiece portrait with tissue guard and 6 maps (4 of them folding and coloured, 4 full-page). Occasional faint foxing to contents; an excellent copy. First edition, Colonial Library issue of Churchill's first book (the first and second printings are identical). The book relates Churchill's exploits with the Malakand field force, led by Sir Bindon Blood, on the Northwest Frontier of India in 1897, based on Churchill's despatches to the Daily Telegraph and the Pioneer Mail. As Churchill was still in India when the book was published, the final editing was undertaken by his uncle Moreton Frewen, husband of Clara Jerome, Jennie's elder sister, resulting in numerous small errors which were corrected the following year in the Silver Library edition.
