Autograph letter signed to the Viennese Court Opera singer Vilém Heš (Wilhelm Hesch 1860-1908) from the "Waltz King" relative to his operetta Die Fledermaus....

2 pp. of a bifolium. Small octavo. Dated Sunday [November 7, 1897]. On stationery with Strauss's musical monogram gilt incorporating double staves to upper left corner. In German (with translation). Pleased by Heš's artistry, Strauss would like to compose at least one new number for him for an upcoming performance of his operetta, Die Fledermaus. "Motivated by the awareness of your friendly collaboration in Die Fledermaus, I plan to compose, indeed, at the very least, a short number for you, whom I so highly value as an artist, for the next performance." Slightly foxed; creased at folds; minor offsetting to second page; remnants of former mount to blank versos. Remembered primarily for his dance music, Johann Strauss also composed multiple operettas, of which Die Fledermaus is the most famous. First performed at the Theater an der Wien on April 5, 1874, it soon became a staple in opera houses across Europe and the United States. It does not appear that Strauss ever, in fact, composed this proposed new number for Mr. Hesch. Our thanks to Peter Kemp for kindly confirming the identity of the recipient of this letter and a reference to it in Franz Mailer's Johann Strauss (Sohn): Leben und Werk in Briefen und Documenten, Band VIII, p. 386....

Mark Twain Autographed Letter Signed To Bram Stoker.

      - Autograph Letter Signed from Mark Twain to Bram Stoker, who he thanks for a photograph of Henry Irving, "My Dear Stoker: It is a wonderful picture. I have never seen one of Irving before that could at all compare with it. I don't know how to thank you enough. Sincerely Yours S.L. Clemens December 27, 93." With the transmittal envelope in Twain's, signed "From S.L. Clemens To Bram Stoker, Abby's Theatre." The famous British actor Henry Irving was one of the inspirations for Count Dracula, the title character of the 1897 novel Dracula. Matted and framed. The entire piece measures 14 inches by 18 inches. A nice association linking these two great writers. The collaboration with the actor Henry Irving was important for Bram Stoker and through him he became involved in London's high society, where he met James Abbott McNeill Whistler and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It is here he met and became friends with Mark Twain. Working for Irving, the most famous actor of his time, and managing one of the most successful theatres in London made Stoker a notable if busy man. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

        Royal Agricultural Show of 1897.

Sydney: N.S.W. Government Printer, 1897. Five-panel panoramic photograph, highlighted by hand, laid down on canvas, 390 x 3490 mm.; some wear and staining to canvas backing, very lightly cracked at one joint, but overall in very good condition. A rare very large panoramic photograph of the Royal Agricultural Show of 1897.The image is taken during the grand parade with the scoreboard in the background revealing details such as the fact that the Tattersalls Plate was due to be run at 2.30 pm, and the "Best Boy" rider to follow at 3. It is such extraordinary detail, displaying all of the activity and bustle of the show as well as the great splendour of the Moore Park grounds, that gives the image its real charm. In the background, for instance, the Cinematographe appears to be doing a good trade, while the hoardings and billboards are full of familiar names from the period, including Fry's Cocoa, Tooths Ale, and the omnipresent Anthony Horderns (Samuel Hordern himself, as the printed list of office holders attests, was a vice-president of the RAS).The society which would become the Sydney Royal Agricultural Society commenced operations in 1822, when a group of leading citizens including Samuel Marsden and John Piper decided to further 'the quality of Australia's primary production by means of contests and competitions'. Their first show was held in Parramatta the following year, but by 1836 waning support led to the Society lapsing. It was not until they reformed in 1857 that the group really gained momentum, with exhibitions held at Parramatta until 1868, followed by a 13-year stint at Prince Alfred Park. Finally in 1880, with funds in disarray, the Society accepted government support, and was able to move to the famous venue at Moore Park, home of the show from 1882 through to 1998.This image was taken in 1897, the culmination of a decade of great expansion for the show. In 1891, Queen Victoria granted the Society permission for the use of the "Royal" prefix. Perhaps even more significantly, 1894 also saw the introduction of electric lighting, meaning that the show could open for the first time at night (although the other great innovation, showbags, appears to have not been introduced until around 1900).The site was well-suited to this panoramic style of photography. The rudiments of panoramic photography were experimented with as early as the 1840s, extending on the established success of early panorama and diorama presentations. The invention of the wet-plate collodion process in the 1860s led to giant advances in the field, but it was the 1888 invention of flexible film which revolutionised the process, and led to a distinct vogue for the unusual photographic style. This piece, executed by the Government Printing Office, is uncommon, especially in such fine condition. An even larger version of the photograph featured in the State Library of New South Wales' exhibition and online catalogue, Eye 4 Photography (2005). It is offered complete with a printed listing of the office bearers for the Royal Agricultural Society of New South Wales and the Metropolitan Exhibition.

        Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 - 1827).

, 1897. German, 1897. Original 19th century Gouache after an 1870 painting by C. Jäger. 48 x 34,5 cm. Outer margins slightly frayed only. Extraordinary work with fresh impression of the signature face of this timeless composer. Gouache, also spelled guache, is a type of paint consisting of pigment, a binding agent (usually gum arabic), and sometimes added inert material, designed to be used in an opaque method. It also refers to paintings that use this opaque method. The name derives from the Italian guazzo. Gouache differs from watercolor in that the particles are larger, the ratio of pigment to water is much higher, and an additional, inert, white pigment such as chalk is also present. This makes gouache heavier and more opaque, with greater reflective qualities. (Wikipedia).nnLudwig van Beethoven (baptised 17 December 1770 ? 26 March 1827) was a German composer and pianist. A crucial figure in the transition between the Classical and Romantic eras in Western art music, he remains one of the most famous and influential of all composers. His best known compositions include 9 symphonies, 5 concertos for piano, 32 piano sonatas, and 16 string quartets. He also composed other chamber music, choral works (including the celebrated Missa Solemnis), and songs.nnBorn in Bonn, then the capital of the Electorate of Cologne and part of the Holy Roman Empire, Beethoven displayed his musical talents at an early age and was taught by his father Johann van Beethoven and Christian Gottlob Neefe. During his first 22 years in Bonn, Beethoven intended to study with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and befriended Joseph Haydn. Beethoven moved to Vienna in 1792 and began studying with Haydn, quickly gaining a reputation as a virtuoso pianist. He lived in Vienna until his death. In about 1800 his hearing began to deteriorate, and by the last decade of his life he was almost totally deaf. He gave up conducting and performing in public but continued to compose; many of his most admired works come from this period. (Wikipedia)n

The Monument to Robert Gould Shaw, Its Inception, Completion and Unveiling 1865-1897

Boston and New York: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1897. First and only edition of this powerful tribute, documenting the 1897 dedication of the great Boston monument to Colonel Robert Gould Shaw and the 54th Massachusetts, the first African-American regiment to fight in the Civil War. Shaw was killed, along with many of his troops, at the battle of Fort Wagner in South Carolina, and was buried with his men in an unmarked grave. Although the 54th lost that battle, the tenacity and bravery of the regiment inspired nearly two hundred thousand African-Americans to enlist in the Union army. Plans for a Boston memorial to Shaw began shortly after the war, but it took thirty years to see the project to completion, in part because chosen artist Augustus Saint-Gaudens became increasingly ambitious as he worked and reworked the massive bronze frieze: the acknowledgements at the end of the volume include "the sculptor, Mr. St. Gaudens, who lost himself in his work." This handsomely printed book, designed by Bruce Rogers at the Riverside Press, recounts the history of Shaw's life and legacy, and records the speeches delivered at the monument's long-awaited 1897 unveiling, most notably the oration by Harvard philosopher William James and the closing address by Tuskegee Institute founder Booker T. Washington. William James had a personal connection to the 54th Massachusetts: his younger brother Wilky served as Shaw's adjutant, and was gravely wounded at Fort Wagner, an injury from which he never fully recovered. Drawing on his late brother's letters, among other historical sources, James tells the story of Shaw's last days. He argues that Shaw's real distinction was not the "common and gregarious courage" he displayed in battle, but the "lonely kind of valor" he showed when he accepted the command of the 54th regiment, a post that invited ridicule and hostility even from his fellow officers: "of five hundred of us who could storm a battery side by side with others, perhaps not one would be found ready to risk his worldly fortunes all alone in resisting an enthroned abuse. The deadliest enemies of nations are not their foreign foes; they always dwell within their borders. And from these internal enemies civilization is always in need of being saved." The ceremony's closing remarks were delivered by Booker T. Washington. Born a slave in Virginia, Washington had emerged as a powerful spokesman for free African Americans, transforming a small Alabama normal school into the far-reaching Tuskegee Institute. In the story of Shaw and the 54th Massachusetts, Washington identified a challenge: "What these heroic souls of his 54th Regiment began, we must complete. . . . after all the real monument, the greater monument, is being slowly but safely builded among the lowly in the South." A near-fine copy of a scarce book. Small quarto, original red cloth lettered in gilt to spine and upper board, top edge gilt, other edges uncut. Tissue-guarded photogravure frontispiece, title page printed in black and red, decorative headpieces and initials throughout text. Ink ownership signature, dated 1897, to half-title. Faint fading to cloth, expert repair to spine ends.

        Following the Equator

Hartford, Ct: The American Publishing Co, 1897. First edition. Fine. A very bright copy of a heavy book that often turns up the worse for wear. A Fine copy with the cover illustration onlay very slightly rubbed and a short marginal tear on the title page and dedication page, otherwise untouched. From the collection of Mrs. J. Insley Blair. "Mrs. Blair was the earliest woman collector of Americana of the first rank," -- Morrison H. Heckscher, curator of American decorative arts at the Met. Housed in a custom case. Twain's well regarded travelogue, published in 1897. Dire financial straits had forced Twain to take a worldwide lecture tour in 1895 and compose a collection of his travels and experiences. Twain traveled widely, including to Africa, India, and Australia - and these writings contain much of Twain's characteristic humor as well as a pointed critique of imperialism. "This is one more ingredient in the curious, amusing, instructive, and at times brilliant farrago, half anecdotes, one quarter diary, one-eighth quotations and the rest delicious footing, which Mark Twain after much pondering decided to call 'Following the Equator.'" (Contemporary New York Times review). Fine.

With the tipped-in advertisement for An Almanac of Twelve Sports for 1898. Title page and 26 three-colour lithographs from the original woodcuts. Slight wear and rubbing to extremities, light foxing to front and rear endpapers, small tear to lower edge of back free endpaper, an excellent copy. First edition, the Library Edition issue, postdated 1898. There was also a deluxe edition of approximately 50 copies with illustrations coloured by hand, and a popular edition bound in cloth. Two of the plates differ from those in the deluxe edition: ''E is for Executioner'' and ''T is for Toper'' have changed to ''E is for Earl'' and ''T for Trumpeter'', thus becoming more appropriate for a younger readership. The first of the five picture books that Nicholson published with Heinemann, An Alphabet - along with An Almanac of Twelve Sports for 1898, which would be published soon thereafter in 1897 - "established Nicholson's solo reputation" (ODNB).

When, however, I had recovered sufficient energy to think at all, the whereabouts of my ship was naturall uppermost in my mind" (Chapter One. I Join the "Corea").         Tratado de Limites Entre Los Estados-Unidos Mexicanos y Honduras Britanica.

Mexico, 1897 - Rare Belize Item Small Quarto (215 by 150mm) 130pp., folding map, half red cloth over black marbled paper boards. Rare work detailing the finalising Belize's border with Mexico. The border between Mexico and Belize was difficult to explore because of its remote location, specifically for the Mexican territory. Because of the region's sparse population, the British colony of British Honduras, now Belize, was able to occupy the region. However, Mexico did not recognize British possession of the territory until the late nineteenth century. The Mexican government wanted to diminish, and eventually end, arms smuggling from Belizean Maya supplied by rebels during the Caste War, which prolonged the situation. As a result, the government of Porfirio Diaz created a Federal Territory which had previously belonged to the State of Yucatan. They later formed the Territory of Quintana Roo and decided to negotiate with the British government to finally fix the common border. They agreed to recognize British governance for the territory in return for Britain's promise to refrain from arming the Maya. With respect to these intentions, Mexico appointed Ignacio Mariscal, Secretary of Foreign Affairs, as Minister Plenipotentiary and the United Kingdom appointed Sir Spenser St. John to its Minister Plenipotentiary in Mexico for negotiations.

The Water of the Wondrous Isles

London/Hammersmith: Kelmscott Press, 1897. Limited First Edition. Limp Vellum. Very Good +. William Morris. Sold by the Trustees of the late William Morris at the Kelmscott Press, 1897. One of 250 copies on Batchelor handmade paper, plus 6 on vellum. 340 pp. 1 vol. Large 4to. 11½" x 8½" (21.5 x 29 cm). Original limp vellum with yapp edges, gilt titles to spine, olive silk ties. Uncut pages. Elaborate woodcut borders and ornaments entirely designed by William Morris, except the initial words Whilom & Empty, which were completed from his unfinished designs by R. Catterson-Smith. Text printed in red and black Chaucer type in double columns, with a few lines in Troy type and shoulder-notes in red. Incipit with full woodcut border and large initial; numerous 3- to 6-line initals and partial borders throughout. Colophon.Morris's prose romance (an early influence for the modern fantasy genre) tells of the adventures of a naked heroine, Birdalone, who escapes from the claws of a witch and travels to a series of fantasy lands, including the Isle of Increase Unsought, which holds a critical mirror to Victorian Britain. Morris began [his] new romance in verse, on 4 February 1895; but on 8 February after seeing B[urne]-J[ones], W.M. decided to write the new romance in prose & verse, & began to rewrite it. (Cockerell diary). It was ultimately written entirely in prose and announced in June 1896. In Cockerells diary we catch glimpses of the dying Morris attempting in vain to complete the design of the initial word Empty. Morris read proofs of a few sections, and his daughter, May, finished the proofreading. It was not published until after his death. Morris is considered by many to be the first writer of modern fantasy to unite an imaginary world with elements of the supernatural, and thus a precursor to much of present-day fantasy literature. The novel's importance in the history of fantasy literature was recognized by its republication by Ballantine Books as the thirty-eighth volume of the celebrated Ballantine Adult Fantasy series in November, 1971.Verery slight toning to vellum. All six silk ties intact. Internally outstanding. No ownership marks and free from the usual spotting and foxing. Very clean. [Clark Library, Kelmscott and Doves, pp. 54-55. Peterson A45.         Genèse et nature de l'Hystérie

2 vol.

Image is clean and bright. A portrait of the elderly queen with white head dress, holding a closed black fan, with jewelry commemorating Prince Albert (a bracelet and a broach) prominently featured. This is the same image displayed on the website of the Leeds Museums and Galleries. That image has a different title, identifying it as a Diamond Jubilee portrait. At lower left of this image Alf Cooke, Queen's Printer is named; at lower right is the Queen's printed signature. A beautifully rendered image with exquisite coloring.
