      W. J. Jefferson Printing & Publishing Co. THE FIGHT OF THE CENTURY BEING A REVIEW OF THE WORLD'S CHAMPIONSHIP CONTEST BETWEEN ROBERT FITZSIMMONS AND JAMES J CORBETT AT CARSON CITY, NEV. MARCH 17TH 1897, W. J. Jefferson Printing & Publishing Co., N.d. (but 1897), first edition, 52 numbered pages, some modest wear and tear and chipping to the somewhat color faded front and rear covers restored by a professional paper conservationist), else a tight vg copy in pictorial wraps as issued with just about fine interior consisting of a pink paper stock text block as issued. A detailed account of the boxers and their boxing history, the Articles of Agreement, pre-fight events and round by round commentary by the referee (Siler) and Houseman. This fight is of course acknowledged as amongst the greatest fights in the recorded history of the sport and was the second ever heavyweight championship fight, Corbett defeating Sullivan 5 years earlier in New Orleans. It was also the first championship fight ever filmed, in this case by the Edison Picture Company and memorialized not only by Corbetts own "long count" accusation, but also by Fitzsimmons famous Solar Plexus Punch which won the match for him in the 14th round. The OCLC reveals only 3 copies while no copies have been reported among the major auction houses in the last 35 years. Among the "Holy Grails" of those collecting important boxing titles.

Halford and the Dry-Fly Revolution (2002) . Frederic M. Halford (1844-1914), author and angler of the late Victorian and early Edwardian eras whose writings and systematic approach to the dry fly profoundly influenced fly-fishing around the world. His books, beginning with Floating Flies (1886) and Dry-Fly Fishing in Theory and Practice (1889), and culminating with Dry-Fly Entomology (1897), made a legendary figure of the somewhat reserved Halford and shaped the sport for decades. As Tony Hayter's recent biography demonstrates, Halford's life and writings remain of perennial interest

Empire Makers and Breakers: A Scene at the South Africa Committee

1897. Stuff (Assumed to be Pseudonym of Henry Charles Seppings-Wright [1850-1937]). Empire Makers and Breakers: A Scene at the South Africa Committee, 1897. Supplement to Vanity Fair, November 25, 1897. 13-1/2" x 19-1/2" Color lithograph, attractively matted and glazed in recent wood frame with gilt inside border and black outside edge. Photocopy of accompanying Vanity Fair essay and Certificate of Authenticity affixed to rear. Image vivid, clean and free of creases and tears. A well-preserved copy of a scarce item in a handsome frame. * A superb portrayal of British pride when the Empire was at its zenith, this image relates to the deliberations of the South African Committee at the close of the Second Matabele War, 1896-1897, which consolidated British control of Rhodesia (present-day Zimbabwe). The most notable figure in this image is Cecil Rhodes, the Prime Minister of the Cape Colony and an ardent imperialist, who stands in the center of the image with a glass. As the map in the background indicates, the committee is discussing its plan to push into the Boer states, most notably Transvaal and Orange. This action triggered the Second Boer War, 1899-1902, which introduced the concentration camp and scorched-earth tactics and ended with British domination of South Africa. Vanity Fair was published weekly from 1869 to 1914. It is best-known today for its caricatures of notable people and satirical depictions of current events. With few exceptions these were produced by a series of artists under pseudonyms, most notably "Spy" and "Ape." Approximately 2,400 caricatures were published in all, mostly as single pages. Vanity Fair also published 21 special numbers with double-page prints. "Empire Makers and Breakers" was originally issued in one of these. The prints were also issued individually. The absence of a central vertical crease indicates that our copy is one of these. The identity of "Stuff" has never been determined, but he is generally believed to be Henry Charles Seppings-Wright.
