        Dry Fly Entomology

Vinton & Co., Ltd., London 1897 - Halford's classic work on tying flies. Includes twenty-eight beautiful full-color plates showing the hundred best patterns of floating flies. Except for a stamp of a former owner on the interior front board, there is no writing, underlining, or other marks. The text portion of the book is in pristine condition, however there are some binding issues. The hinges are cracked on the front and the back, and the spine is torn and repaired (albeit poorly) just below the title. There is also some rubbing on the corners. Otherwise this is a nice, tight copy with the boards straight and true and the gold gilt on the top edge fully intact. A must-have for any serious collection of angler-related literature! This scarce and highly collectible copy comes protected with an archival mylar cover. Satisfaction guaranteed! [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Autograph Letter, Signed ("H"), To Lady Hibernia Castletown

, 1897. 1897. "Holmes' Greatest Romance" Holmes, Oliver Wendell [1841-1935]. [Autograph Letter, Signed ("H"), To Lady Hibernia Castletown]. Boston, December 4, 1897. 3 pp. on conjoined Commonwealth of Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court stationery. Lightly foxed and toned. Item matted and framed with half-tone portrait plate portrait and transcription. * A flirtatious letter to the object of Holmes's affection, Lady Clare Castletown, "My Dear Hibernia," about a shipment of pink and blue pond lily roots he plans to send her as a gift. Displaying shades of his poet-father, he goes on to wax lyrical about another botanical specimen: "There is a very handsome pink marshmallow that grows wild on the south shore of Mass. I wonder if you would care for that if it can be got? I remember once, when life seemed at a low ebb, driving over a dreary sandy waste and suddenly coming on a lonely pool, with woods on one side, a dead tree hovering over it with the appropriate crow. And on the other side a wilderness of pink flowers standing about as high as my breast, I should think. And I felt that the romantic could be found almost anywhere after that." Holmes was introduced to Lady Clare while traveling through England in the summer of 1889. A mutual infatuation followed, which led to a correspondence - punctuated with occasional visits - that lasted until Lady Clare's death in 1926. In an effort to keep the relationship a secret - both Holmes and Lady Clare were married - Holmes destroyed most of her letters, but Lady Clare did not follow suit, and many of Holmes' letters to her survive. They reveal an intimate relationship. Its extent remains a mystery, but which, but it was, in the opinion of Holmes biographers White and Minor, "Holmes' greatest romance."         Following the Equator. A Journey Around The World

Hartford: American Publishing Company, 1897. Hartford: American Publishing Company, 1897. First Edition. 3/4 Leather. Near Fine. First Edition. 3/4 Leather. 3/4 Contemporary Leather - this is not the "Publisher's Morocco" noted by Blanck, but may be, and probably is, an unrecorded leather binding for this issue. We've compared it to two other publisher's leather bindings (neither recorded by Blanck) for the first edition of Following the Equator and it is very similar though not a match, but we suspect there are others. There is a binder's ticket at rear (The Case Lockwood and Brainard Company, Hartford) . In any case, a lovely contemporary binding of the First Edition (Blanck 3451) with single publisher noted, "11" on page 161, etc. An unusually nice copy in morocco over marbled boards in a custom cloth slipcase with marbled sides. Slight shelfwear else fine. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 2 lbs 0 oz. Category: Fiction; Antiquarian & Rare; Inventory No: 033005.

        Eigenh. Brief mit U.

Wien, 10. IV. 1897.. 3 SS. auf Doppelblatt. 8vo.. - Selten so früh. - Mit einem kleinen Einriß im unteren Mittelfalz.

        DRACULA

Constable , 1897. Constable , 1897. First edition, first issue, printed on thicker stock with uncut page edges and with no adverts at rear. Original yellow cloth with red lettering. Covers dusty, with browning to the spine but the red lettering clear throughout. The cloth is generally free from wear with just a small snag to the head of the spine. Internally extremely fresh with the hinges tight. Wholly free from any form of cleaning or repair. As genuine a copy as you could wish to see, and by the standards of this book, which is so fragile, in very good condition indeed. Early printings of Dracula come in various states. Copies with a blank final text leaf and no pages of adverts are considered the earliest as all copies inscribed by Stoker on the day of publication are in this state. Issued slightly later is an printing with the final integral leaf now containing an advert for 'The Shoulder of Shasta', and then in subsequent years issues with a further sixteen page catalogue and later still on thinner paper. Although not noted as such, these are essentially reprints. Fine copies of the later issues do occur in commerce, but nice copies of the first issue are many times rarer. "Easily the most influential supernatural novel ever written and the origin of the entire vampire 'industry'. Although filmed and adapted many times for stage and radio, no performance has yet managed to truly capture the atmosphere and originality of the novel itself."         Calamus. A series of letters written during the years 1868-1880 by Walt Whitman to a young friend (Peter Doyle)

Laurens Maynard MDCCCXCVII [1897], Boston - First American Issue of the only edition, with spine imprint Maynard and title page "Published by Laurens Maynard" (later Small, Maynard). Edited, with an introduction, by Richard Maurice Bucke, M.D., one of Whitman's literary executors. Small 8vo: viii,173pp, with two inserted leaves of Japan paper, one (frontispiece) with drawing by H. D. Young of Whitman and Peter Doyle on verso before title page, the other a photograph of a letter on recto after p. 112. Publisher's lime T-like cloth (bold ribbed), cover blind stamped with single rule frame, spine lettered in gilt. Pages marginally toned, frontispiece and facsimile letter browned, else an excellent example. BAL 21446. Meyerson A14.I.b1. In the third edition of Leaves of Grass, published in 1860, Whitman's "Calamus" poems, a cluster devoted to male-male affection, make their first appearance (the edition on offer here is the first, 37 years later, in which the poems stand alone). The Calamus poems offer a vision of men loving men to counter the Civil War horror of fratricide that threatened the nation at a pivotal moment in its history. Their genesis is found in an unpublished manuscript sequence of twelve poems entitled "Live Oak With Moss," written in or before the spring of 1859. The poems seem to recount the story of a relationship between the speaker and a male lover. In the third edition of Leaves, Whitman included the twelve "Live Oak" poems along with others to form a sequence of 45 untitled poems that celebrate many aspects of "comradeship" or "adhesive love," Whitman's term, borrowed from phrenology, to describe male same-sex attraction in its political, spiritual, metaphysical, and personal phases—in Whitman's view, the backbone of future nations, the root of religious sentiments, the solution to the big questions of life, and a source of personal anguish and joy.         The Path of the Law. (An address delivered . . . at the dedication of the new hall of the Boston University School of Law, on January 8, 1897.) In: Harvard Law Review, Vol. X, 1897, pp. 457-78.

1897 1897 - FIRST EDITION. Entire volume offered. Recent cloth, leather spine labels. Very Good. 'The Path of the Law . . . is the seminal work in modern American legal theory. In it, Holmes detailed his radical break with legal formalism and created the foundation for the leading contemporary schools of American legal thought. He was the dominant source of inspiration for the school of legal realism, and his insistence on a practical approach to law and legal analysis laid the basis for the realists' later concentration upon the pragmatic and empirical aspects of law and legal procedures' (Steven J. Publisher's lime T-like cloth (bold ribbed), cover blind stamped with single rule frame, spine lettered in gilt. Pages marginally toned, frontispiece and facsimile letter browned, else an excellent example. BAL 21446. Meyerson A14.I.b1. & ¶In the third edition of Leaves of Grass, published in 1860, Whitman's "Calamus" poems, a cluster devoted to male-male affection, make their first appearance (the edition on offer here is the first, 37 years later, in which the poems stand alone).
