        Royal Agricultural Show of 1897

Sydney: N.S.W. Government Printer, 1897. Five-panel panoramic photograph, highlighted by hand, laid down on canvas, 390 x 3490 mm.; some wear and staining to canvas backing, very lightly cracked at one joint, but overall in very good condition. A rare very large panoramic photograph of the Royal Agricultural Show of 1897. The image is taken during the grand parade with the scoreboard in the background revealing details such as the fact that the Tattersalls Plate was due to be run at 2.30 pm, and the "Best Boy" rider to follow at 3. It is such extraordinary detail, displaying all of the activity and bustle of the show as well as the great splendour of the Moore Park grounds, that gives the image its real charm. In the background, for instance, the Cinematographe appears to be doing a good trade, while the hoardings and billboards are full of familiar names from the period, including Fry's Cocoa, Tooths Ale, and the omnipresent Anthony Horderns (Samuel Hordern himself, as the printed list of office holders attests, was a vice-president of the RAS). The society which would become the Sydney Royal Agricultural Society commenced operations in 1822, when a group of leading citizens including Samuel Marsden and John Piper decided to further 'the quality of Australia's primary production by means of contests and competitions'. Their first show was held in Parramatta the following year, but by 1836 waning support led to the Society lapsing. It was not until they reformed in 1857 that the group really gained momentum, with exhibitions held at Parramatta until 1868, followed by a 13-year stint at Prince Alfred Park. Finally in 1880, with funds in disarray, the Society accepted government support, and was able to move to the famous venue at Moore Park, home of the show from 1882 through to 1998. This image was taken in 1897, the culmination of a decade of great expansion for the show. In 1891, Queen Victoria granted the Society permission for the use of the "Royal" prefix. Perhaps even more significantly, 1894 also saw the introduction of electric lighting, meaning that the show could open for the first time at night (although the other great innovation, showbags, appears to have not been introduced until around 1900). The site was well-suited to this panoramic style of photography. The rudiments of panoramic photography were experimented with as early as the 1840s, extending on the established success of early panorama and diorama presentations. The invention of the wet-plate collodion process in the 1860s led to giant advances in the field, but it was the 1888 invention of flexible film which revolutionised the process, and led to a distinct vogue for the unusual photographic style. This piece, executed by the Government Printing Office, is uncommon, especially in such fine condition. An even larger version of the photograph featured in the State Library of New South Wales' exhibition and online catalogue, Eye 4 Photography (2005). It is offered complete with a printed listing of the office bearers for the Royal Agricultural Society of New South Wales and the Metropolitan Exhibition.

Autograph Letter Signed, in German on a government postcard, Kimberly, South Africa, March 22, 1897.

      - The British government asked Koch to assist in fighting the spread of cattle plague in South Africa. The disease had been introduced through imported cattle. Although Koch proved that the disease was highly contagious, he could not isolate the disease-causing agent. He was, nevertheless, able to develop an effective vaccine. Koch writes to the Director of the Royal Health Authority Councilor Kohler in Berlin. In full, "I was lucky to get last minute tickets for passage on the German East Africa line's "Admiral," and I will depart from Durban on March 28. I will take the liberty to send you cards along the way from each of the countries we have to pass, in accordance with your request. Unfortunately, they do not have picture postcards yet, culture has not reached them yet." Signed, "R. Koch." Slight water staining on right margin text but words remain easily readable.

Cairo und Ägypten - Ein praktisches Reisehandbuch für die Besucher des Pharaonenlandes.

Cairo: Shepheard's Hotel, No Date, (1897). Zweite Auflage. - A very rare German-language guide to Egypt, Cairo and Shepheard's Hotel, published by the now legendary Shepheards Hotel. Second edition. I have not come across another copy of this or the 1st. Undated - the latest date spotted in the text is 1897 (in the reading lists (Literatur uber Agypten, pp36 ff), and 1895 in the Shepheard's history (pp1 ff). Original cloth spine, and stiff wraps beautifully illustrated in colour with minarets, a sphinx, palm trees etc, and "Shepheard's Hotel Cairo" in gold. A list of Compagnie Internationale Grands Hotels to the back. Size: 12.5 x 18.8cm. Pages: 2 (advertisements) + 1 (Frontis) + 102 + 26 (advertisements), with a large loose colour folding Plan of Cairo (Masr-el-Kahira) in the pocket at the back. Richly illustrated throughout, including Shepheard's interiors and exteriors. CONTENTS: Contents include a history and description of Shepheard's, detailed steamer routes, practical information, reading lists, the Nile, geography, geology, climate, wildlife, population, ethnic groups, administration, sovereign debt, army and navy, education, religion, justice, trade, Islamic Calendar, chronological history, a German-Arabic vocabulary, and a table of time differences. The adverts are local, and make fascinating reading in their own right. PLAN AND INSETS: The plan, labelled in English, is bounded by the Railway Station (N), Mohammedan Cemetery (NE), Citadel (SE), Island of Roda and Christian Cemeteries (SW), and Kasr-en-Nil (W). Pasted to one of the blank panels at the back is an "Explanation of the Plan" containing 83 references for stations, banks, clubs, consulates, consultates-general, hotels, churches, hospitals, mosques, and "various". There is a small illustration of the hotel exterior to the bottom. Especially interesting is an inset floor plan titled "Shepheard's Hotel 25 C 2/3", identifying the Terrace, Entrance, Public Saloons, Shops, Cook's Office, Restaurant, Dining Room, Bar and Billiards, Office, Smoking, Lift, Tennis Court, Engine house, Steam Laundry, and Stables. CONDITION: The wraps are Good, remaining attractive, with some spotting, staining, and a couple of nicks with minor loss. Faint indecipherable writing in pencil to the edge of the back wrap.         Maxim aerial Torpedo. A new system of throwing high exposives from ordnance, and some recent improvements in smokeless powders

London, 1897. b/w photographic frontispiece, b/w plates. Oblong folio. (5) 33 pp. plus 16 plates. Hudson Maxim was the brother of Hiram (Maxim machine gun) and a developer of modern smokeless powder and other high explosives, the rights to which he eventually sold to Dupont. In this work, apparently published privately, his “aerial torpedoes” are essentially giant naval guns charged with his new smokeless powder, designed to shoot massive shells (up to 1000 pounds) loaded with gun cotton. The photographic frontispiece shows partially burned particles of smokeless powder. The pages are printed on recto only. Text and illustrations are precise, technical, yet still understandable - as Hudson, with rigorous logic, frames his airtight argument for smokeless powder and aerial torpedoes. With the bookplate of Wican Library on the front pastedown, their blindstamp in the lower corner of the title page, small ink stamp on the verso, and no other markings. Bound in blue cloth with gold cover and spine lettering. Light wear to spine ends. Most unusual.

[Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Original head-and-shoulders drawing by Alexander Kostomolotsky (1897/8-1975) of the composer in right profile in black crayon. Undated, but ca. 1945-50. Signed by the artist with initials

Sheet size 217 x 153 mm. With the autograph signature of the composer in pencil below the portrait. . "Kabalevsky, like Prokofiev and Shostakovich, wrote a great deal of music for the emerging genre of films with sound... It was during the 1930s that Kabalevsky’s style was defined; although Prokofiev served as a model to a certain extent... Kabalevsky's most valuable legacy lies in the field of children’s music, not only in terms of the many works he wrote for young performers but also in his development of a system of musical education for children. Some of his children’s songs became musical symbols of the Soviet age (Chetvyorka druzhnaya rebyat (‘The Band of Four Friends’) and Shkol nïye godï (‘Schooldays’) in particular) while several of his numerous instrumental concertos written for young musicians gained worldwide popularity." Dina Grigor yevna Daragan in Grove online Kostomolotsky also executed drawings of other Russian composers, including Shostakovich, with whom he was friends.

Sapho. [Subtitle]: Pièce lyrique de M.M. Henri Cain & Bernède d'après le roman de Alphonse Daudet. Musique de J. Massenet. Théâtre de l'Opéra-Comique. Représentations de Melle. Emma Calvé

Paris: F. Hermet. [ca. 1897]. Original large lithographic poster in colours by Pal, signed in the stone and with the mark of the Pal studio to lower left. 129 x 98 cms. (51.5" x 39"). Laid down to board; slightly worn at edges. In very good condition overall. . "In Sapho Massenet made his first attempt at an opera in a modern setting. Dramatically too, with its basis in Daudet’s novel, it recalls La traviata... Massenet handles the vicissitudes of love with enormous skill and imagination, and the solo scene for Fanny in the last act may be compared with Charlotte’s great monologue in Werther... Sapho is certainly one of Massenet’s finest works..." Hugh Macdonald et al in Grove online The poster depicts the singer Emma Calvé in the lead role of Fanny Legrand in the premiere of the opera in Paris at the Opéra Comique on November 27, 1897. Reproduced in Schneider: Massenet, p. 209. Not in Broido.

The Earliest Known Coptic Psalter - The Text, in the Dialect of Upper Egypt, Edited from the Unique Papyrus Codex Oriental 5000 in the British Museum – a fine rebound copy.

Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner & Co Ltd 1897 - This book was discovered during a probate valuation. It was tucked away to the rear of a partially hidden shelf. Although the covers had become distressed with age the interior was flawless. The book has now been professionally rebound in quarter Moroccan calf and decorated marbled boards. The spine has five gilt edged raised bands with the title contained between the first and second band in gilt on a black background. The external appearance of the book is now magnificent. The interior of the book is unaltered save for the addition of two endpapers front and rear. The page block has original marbling to all edges. The pages, themselves, are in quite remarkable condition for their age; there are no marks or notations and a complete absence of foxing. Save for the tiniest hint of shading to the edges the pages are pristine on high quality semi-glazed paper. This is by far and away the most impressive copy of this important work that we have encountered. It was limited to an edition of 350 copies; no individual number was noted. The rarity of this book speaks for itself. The images you see are high resolution photographs of the actual book. The book will be dispatched via the Royal Mail in protective packaging. We do not charge postage to buyers within the UK. Those from outside the UK are asked to contact us before purchasing. We offer a 7 day no quibble full refund if the item is not as described and shown. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
