Keulemans.

Love is Enough, or the Freeing of Pharamond: A Morality

(Hammersmith: Kelmscott Press, 1897. Brown, Hannah. Quarto. 91pp. One of 300 copies on paper. Illustrated with two full-page woodcuts designed by Edward Burne-Jones and engraved by W. H. Hooper, and numerous ornamental initials and borders by Morris. The penultimate book of the Kelmscott Press, and one of only two printed with the color blue. Published one year after Morris' death and one year before the Press ceased operation, Love Is Enough is considered by many to be the greatest Kelmscott book, after the Chaucer. In a breathtaking designer binding by award-winning artist Hannah Brown of full calf with blind- and gold-tooling, colored leather onlays, and bright embroidery. The binder drew inspiration from the cycle of nature that features so prominently in the text, as well as from Morris's own designs for fabrics, borders, and wallpapers. In particular, she based the design on "Trellis," a wallpaper by Morris inspired by the Medieval-style gardens at Red House. Brown leather onlays, which were damped and pressed to create a wood-grain pattern, form the trellis itself, with gold-covered brass tacks at each intersection. Twisting around this framework are thorny vines, crowned with red roses, and careful embroidery lines the veins of the greenery. Charming blue beetles alight on the flowers and leaves, and metallic thread gives them just a touch of true-to-life shine. The focal point of the binding, however, are four densely embroidered birds flitting among the branches. Brown chose the four birds to represent the four seasons; for spring - a Goldfinch, summer - a Housemartin, autumn - a Serin and winter - a Brambling. Leaf-patterned paper is used for the doublures, and one cluster of leaves inside each cover has the veins cut away to reveal gold leaf beneath. The textblock is sewn onto stubs, and both the stubs and headbands are colored the same blue and red as the text initials. The book is housed in a teak wood box with a frosted perspex lid, so that the front cover of the book can be partially seen through it. A title label crosses the center of the box, decorated with leaves and a beetle-laden flower. The title is cut-away to reveal more gold leaf and is printed in the same font as in the original book. The box closes with a gold clasp. Brown was elected a Licentiate of Designer Bookbinders in 2009. Before becoming a bookbinder, she studied three-dimensional crafts, such as metalwork, textiles, and printmaking, which she incorporates into her binding designs. In 2014, she won the Mansfield Medal for Best Book in Competition in the Designer Bookbinders annual competition. Altogether a glorious binding on an important text.

Peking, Imprimerie des Lazaristes au Pe-Tang, 1897. - 2 volumes bound as 1 (continuous page numbers). (35.5 x 25.5 cm). XII [4], 336, [4], 337-"562" [=552], [2] pp. With a frontispiece to each part, 51 plates with photolithographs and collographs, 1 tinted map and 660 wood engraved illustrations in text. Modern half cloth, with the original wrappers bound in. First edition of an important source on Beijing in the late 19th century, written by the Lazarite Vicar Apostolic Alphonse Favier (1837-1905). Favier arrived in China in 1862 and became the Vicar Apostolic of Northern Chihli in 1899. Originally educated as an architect, he helped to rebuild the Xishiku Church, also called Beitang, in 1887. The work is divided into two volumes. The first deals with the history of Beijing, starting with the topography, followed by old myths and legends, the subsequent dynasties, and an extensive account on Christianity and the different missionary orders in China. In the second a description of the city is given, including the statues, gardens, churches and palaces that are to be found there. The photograph illustrations show unique views of the city in the late 19th century. - This copy is numbered 191 (of 800?). There also exists a deluxe edition, which contains an additional 10 coloured engravings. Due to it's succes the work was publsihed again in France in 1900 and 1902. - With an inscription on half-title, dated 12 Oktober 1909. Slightly browned throughout, but otherwise a very good copy, wholly untrimmed. The original wrappers are included, but worn. Cordier, Sinica, col. 218. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
