Bel exemplaire

THE BOOK OF THE THOUSAND NIGHTS AND A NIGHT

London: H. S. Nichols Ltd.. Complete 12 volume set handsomely bound in 3/4 burgundy leather. 1897. hb. Royal 8vo, . More colloquially known as "The Arabian Nights", this magnificant work was first published in 1885 by Burton through the private Kamashastra Society in order to evade the likely consequences of publishing commercially what was perceived at the time to be pornography. Each of the volumes in this set has the name of the society stamped at the bottom of the spine and is "Illustrated by a Series of seventy-one original illustrations reproduced from the Original Pictures in Oils specially painted by Albert Letchford". Each engraving carries the original printed tissue-guard. Each book measures 26 x 18 cms and the "pebbled" leather is bound over woven green cloth with the top edge gilt. The endpapers are marbled and each front endpaper carries the attractive bookplate of J. H. Burton, which depicts a schooner with all sails set, and is bordered by mermaids. The bookplate is initialled in the plate "H.N." (being Harold Nelson, the famed British bookplate designer, artist and engraver). The extremities of each volume do show some rubbing, but it is not untoward. The hinges are tight and the contents are in exceptionally good condition - in fact, the volumes appear never to have been read. We have taken detailed photographs of the set and they are available upon application. .

Never had traveller a better Steed"

1897. Nicnack Rides on the back of the UnicornRACKHAM, Arthur, artist. "Never had traveller a better Steed" [London], 1897. Original pen-and-ink drawing, signed "A Rackham '97" on lower right-hand corner, for the drawing illustrating A.E. Bonser's The Treasure at the end of the Rainbow, (pp. 717-727). The drawing is titled by Arthur Rackham in the lower left-hand corner "The Treasure at the end of the Rainbow/Never had traveller a better Steed."Image size: 8 7/8 x 10 1/2 inches: 225 x 266 mm. Matted, framed and glazed. The drawing appears on p. 723 in the St. Nicholas Magazine. London, Frederick Warne & Co.,1898. In St. Nicholas the drawing is titled "They approached the Mountains of the Moon, and saw the lofty summits". "Nicnack," said the Phenix, peeping over the edge,--- for it was indeed the royal bird,--"is that you? I have been expecting your visit. You can help me, and I can help you. I am short of cinnamon sticks. Down where you stand you can see over yonder a grove of the spice. The unicorn will take you to it. Please get me some; and," the Phenix added thoughtfully, "while you are about it, you might bring three straight young palm-trees." Down climbed Nicnack; off he sped on the unicorn's back, and soon returned with the spice and palms. "Thank you, Nicnack," said the Phenix; "but you're tired, so sit down and rest, and tell me what you saw in Fairyland. You see, I know a good deal about you already." Nicnack was more than astonished; but he frankly told the Phenix of his adorable Princess, and how he hoped to win her by finding the Treasure at the End of the Rainbow."In this pen and ink drawing, Rackham depicts a sense of urgency in how he draws Nicnack riding like the wind on his unicorn. His cape and his feathered hat are billowing out behind him. In the foreground a rabbit, looking scared runs out of the way of the hooves of the unicorn. The mountainous landscape is rugged with rocks in the foreground. Not typical of a Rackham drawing, but still full of detail and movement - a skill that Rackham uses to great effect.

It is spoken by the West Slavic people known as Sorbians who were, genetically and based on the spoken language, most closely related to the Czechs and Poles. In today's Germany the language is protected as a minority language. The discovery of coal in the 19th century triggered a rush of numerous processing businesses and subsequently a rise in population. During the Soviet occupation coal containing Uranium was found and produced. The devastating flood catastrophe of 1897 was the result of uninterrupted rainfall for 20 days. Within a day six inches of rain prompted the Weisseritz, a tributary to the Elbe, to rise many times above its normal level. 19 lives perished and the destruction in the area amounted to 320 houses and 130 bridges lost.         [PALOV'S MAIN WORK] Lectures on the Work of the Principal Digestive Glands

Contemporary owner's cardboards, original wrapper is glued to the front board. The owner's inscription (dated 15/XII/1902) on the wrapper. The private stamp of L.E. Gakkel on the title verso. Good clean copy. The binding is slightly shattered, one of the signatures can be detached. The edges of the binding are rubbed, the paper on corner of the rear board is missing. Rare. First edition. The ground-breaking work in the field of physiology. Undoubtedly one of the main works of Russian science. Ivan Pavlov (1849-1936) was a Russian physiologist who contributed to many areas of neurological sciences. During the 1890s he was looking at salivation in dogs as a response to being fed, when he noticed that his dogs would begin to salivate whenever he entered the room, even when he was not bringing them food. At first he found this something of a nuisance, but what he had accidentally discovered was the phenomenon of classical conditioning. Pavlov performed and directed experiments on digestion, eventually publishing this work after 12 years of research. He won the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1904 for his work. His discovery has gained growing significance in political practices and sociological sciences. He concluded that even such concepts as freedom, curiosity and religion were conditioned reflexes of the brain. ''Essentially, only one thing in life is of real interest to us- our psychical experience,'' he said in his Nobel address. ''Its mechanism, however, was and still is shrouded in profound obscurity. All human resources-art, religion, literature, philosophy, and the historical sciences-all have joined in the attempt to throw light upon this darkness. But humanity has at its disposal yet another powerful resource-natural science with its strict objective methods.''.

An Essay on the Foundations of Geometry.

Cambridge: University Press, 1897 - Octavo. Original blue cloth, neatly rebacked with the original gilt-lettered spine laid down, boards ruled in blind, all edges untrimmed. Mild cockling to front board, tips lightly rubbed and bumped, page-edges tanned, contents toned, inner hinges reinforced. A very good copy. First edition, first impression, an excellent association copy of Russell's first published book of philosophy, with the pencilled ownership inscription of noted Cambridge philosopher R. B. Braithwaite, dated 1923, to the front free endpaper. Braithwaite (1900-1990), then a scholar at King's College, originally studied mathematics before switching to the moral sciences tripos for his final year, the year of the inscription. He was subsequently elected to a fellowship at the college, which he retained through a long career in which he founded the faculty of the history and philosophy of science with Herbert Butterfield, and worked "in the Cambridge tradition of scientifically informed philosophy exemplified by Bertrand Russell, J. M. Keynes, Frank Ramsey, and C. D. Broad" (ODNB). Based on Russell's Trinity College fellowship dissertation, An Essay on the Foundations of Geometry "provides a partial defence of Kant's theory that the truth of geometry is a necessary condition of all possible experience Russell later dismissed the book as a foolish and immature work, and its central claims have not been accepted by either mathematicians or philosophers. None the less, principally through being reviewed at length and with great respect by the eminent French mathematician Henri Poincaré, it served to establish Russell's professional reputation and led to his being invited to deliver a paper at the prestigious International Congress of Philosophy held in Paris in 1900, an event that profoundly affected his career" (idem). Geschichte der Stadt Wien, herausgegeben vom Alterthumsvereine zu Wien * 6 Bände G A N Z L E D E R - H a n d e i n b ä n d e (vollständig)

Numeriertes Exemplar 175/300 in Ganzleder. Stellenweise gering stockfleckig, sonst wohlerhalten. - Erstausgabe in sehr guter Erhaltung. - "Warum handgebunden?

Paris: Armand Magnier, 1897 - Deluxe Edition; one of 50 copies (out of 300 in total); specially bound by Chambolle-Duru in full blue morocco; gilt rules on covers; gilt-decorated spine; all edges gilt. The original wrappers and prospectus have been bound in, along with extra plates and three original wash drawings by Thevenot, as well as an unsigned aquatint or pochoir of a woman with a parasol. Bookplate; fine in the original binder's slipcase (a little worn). This piece was originally published in 1880, and remains one of the author's most famous short stories. It is set in the Franco-Prussian War, following a stagecoach of civilians fleeing Rouen. It has been made into at least 4 films, and is speculated to have loosely inspired the Ernest Haycox story "Stage to Lordsburg," which was made into the film Stagecoach. While that's possible, one might just as well claim that both stories owe something to The Canterbury Tales. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        THE NEGRO ALPHABET [cover title]

Kingston, Jamaica: Aston Gardner W. & Co., 1897. [9] illustrated leaves. Oblong folio, loose leaves. Small tears and chips, repaired and backed with Japanese tissue. Three punch holes at left margin of each leaf. A few tape stains on blank versos, light damstaining and dust soiling. About very good. A rare illustrated alphabet book demonstrating Jamaican patois in rhyming couplets and with translations into standard English. Each leaf gives two to four letters, with a corresponding patois term and line of verse, along with a translation at the foot of the leaf. The majority of letters and terms also have an associated caricature. The author, Violet Heaven, was a Jamaican emigrant to England, and produced one other book and a series of postcards with a similar theme. Though the text and images seem plainly satirical, the terms are authentic enough for this work to have been cited as a source in Cassidy and LePage's 2002 DICTIONARY OF JAMAICAN ENGLISH. Only one copy recorded by OCLC, at the National Library of Jamaica. CUNDALL 871. CASSIDY & LEPAGE, DICTIONARY OF JAMAICAN ENGLISH, p. xxiii (ref.). OCLC 870503007.

        THE AMSTERDAM NOTEBOOK

Amsterdam: N.p. c. 1897-8. Miniature (16mo) commercial stationer's notebook, 65pp. excluding blanks, 70 x 45mm. Original red roan. Reverse entries, and autograph pencil inscriptions: 'About 1898.....or earlier AC.', and 'E. Aleister Crowley fecit'. In another hand: 'Bought in Amsterdam?' and 'Very early MSS by A.C./Early MSS A.C.' Tail of spine chipped, traces of labels on both covers, pages browning. HOLOGRAPH UNPUBLISHED HOMOEROTIC VERSES BY ALEISTER CROWLEY, THE EARLIEST CROWLEY MANUSCRIPT KNOWN TO EXIST. This tiny notebook, used by Crowley when he was twenty-two years old, is the earliest of the author's manuscripts known to have survived. It consists of eight sonnets and six other poems, all but two of which are unpublished. Following Crowley's annotations, the contents read: Sonnets. E. Aleister Crowley fecit Love me or leave me Your love is light To pass through the pale streets I, who am dying for thy kiss He, who seduced me first A sailor's kiss is branded Did you speak truly? The old dark evening Rondels & Songs, &c. E. Aleister Crowley fecit The End -- rondel The Red Lips of the Octopus In Fur and Silk poem Xmas -- ballad Parody on above Song Of these poems, only three ever appeared in print: The Red Lips of the Octopus (published in The Winged Beetle [Privately printed,1910]); Xmas (published in differing versions in Oracles [Society for the Propagation of Religious Truth,1905]; Collected Works II [Society for the Propagation of Religious Truth, 1905-7]; and Amphora [Burns and Oates,1908]. The text, written in pencil, is faint, occasionally difficult to read, and in the case of one poem, illegible. The front leaves of the notebook contain the sonnets, and the back pages, as Crowley worked with the book the other way up, the remaining verses. All the sonnets, written in Crowley's undergraduate hand, are homosexual and masochistic in tone, and for the time unpublishably explicit. The sonnet sequence seems to address his love affair with Herbert Jerome Pollitt, conducted whilst the pair were up at Trinity College, Cambridge. Pollitt, in his guise of theatrical female impersonator, also answered to the name Dine de Rougy. Crowley arrived at Cambridge in 1895, the two met in October 1897, and the affair was over by the following year. How much the relationship meant to Crowley -- and how much it continued to mean throughout his life -- can be gauged from Crowley's decision to exclude this notebook from the otherwise wholesale destruction of his early poems noted in Oracles [Society for the Propagation of Religious Truth, 1905]. Crowley had made his way to Holland for the Christmas of 1897 after breaking up with Pollitt, but the couple spent the holiday writing each other letters by turn beseeching and flirtacious, and they were reconciled on New Year's Eve. The relationship was consummated that night, the act later codified in Crowley's The Book of the Law [Privately printed: The O.T.O./ Church of Thelema, 1938 [1942]]: 'Genesis Libri AL: 1897. Admitted to permanent office in the Temple, midnight, December 31, 1897.' This little books of poems, written during the painful final breakdown of the couple's relationship, is thought to be the earliest Crowley manuscript in existence. It pre-dates (and may go some way to explaining) Crowley's conversion to the loopiness of Golden Dawn mysticism the following year.
