        Naturgeschichte der Vögel Mitteleuropas. Neu bearbeitet von G. Berg, R. Blasius, R. Buri,...Herausgegeben von Dr.Carl R. Hennicke. Gera - Untermhaus.

Keulemans.

        Poems and Tales

Boston, New York, Chigago: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1897 "The Raven" in particular—Poe investigates the loss of ideal beauty and the difficulty in regaining it. These pieces are usually narrated by a young man who laments the untimely death of his beloved. "To Helen" is a three stanza lyric that has been called one of the most beautiful love poems in the English language. The subject of the work is a woman who becomes, in the eyes of the narrator, a personification of the classical beauty of ancient Greece and Rome. "Lenore" presents ways in which the dead are best remembered, either by mourning or celebrating life beyond earthly boundaries. In "The Raven," Poe successfully unites his philosophical and aesthetic ideals. In this psychological piece, a young scholar is emotionally tormented by a raven's ominous repetition of "Nevermore" in answer to his question about the probability of an afterlife with his deceased lover. Charles Baudelaire noted in his introduction to the French edition of "The Raven": "It is indeed the poem of the sleeplessness of despair; it lacks nothing: neither the fever of ideas, nor the violence of colors, nor sickly reasoning, nor drivelling terror, nor even the bizarre gaiety of suffering which makes it more terrible." Poe also wrote poems that were intended to be read aloud. Experimenting with combinations of sound and rhythm, he employed such technical devices as repetition, parallelism, internal rhyme, alliteration, and assonance to produce works that are unique in American poetry for their haunting, musical quality. In "The Bells," for example, the repetition of the word "bells" in various structures accentuates the unique tonality of the different types of bells described in the poem.Poe's stature as a major figure in world literature is primarily based on his ingenious and profound short stories, poems, and critical theories, which established a highly influential rationale for the short form in both poetry and fiction. Regarded in literary histories and handbooks as the architect of the modern short story, Poe was also the principal forerunner of the "art for art's sake" movement in nineteenth-century European literature. Whereas earlier critics predominantly concerned themselves with moral or ideological generalities, Poe focused his criticism on the specifics of style and construction that contributed to a work's effectiveness or failure. In his own work, he demonstrated a brilliant command of language and technique as well as an inspired and original imagination. Poe's poetry and short stories greatly influenced the French Symbolists of the late nineteenth century, who in turn altered the direction of modern literature. It is this philosophical and artistic transaction that accounts for much of Poe's importance in literary history. This book contains the first collection of Poems Poems and Tales. (See Pictures)

        Orig. oliemaleri på lærred.

1897 1897 - Signeret Vilh. Groth 1897? 48x79 cm. I guldramme [67x97 cm.].

An Essay on the Foundations of Geometry.

Cambridge: University Press,, 1897. Octavo. Original blue cloth, neatly rebacked with the original gilt-lettered spine laid down, boards ruled in blind, all edges untrimmed. Mild cockling to front board, tips lightly rubbed and bumped, page-edges tanned, contents toned, inner hinges reinforced. A very good copy. First edition, first impression, an excellent association copy of Russell's first published book of philosophy, with the pencilled ownership inscription of noted Cambridge philosopher R. B. Braithwaite, dated 1923, to the front free endpaper. Braithwaite (1900-1990), then a scholar at King's College, originally studied mathematics before switching to the moral sciences tripos for his final year, the year of the inscription. He was subsequently elected to a fellowship at the college, which he retained through a long career in which he founded the faculty of the history and philosophy of science with Herbert Butterfield, and worked "in the Cambridge tradition of scientifically informed philosophy exemplified by Bertrand Russell, J. M. Keynes, Frank Ramsey, and C. D. Broad" (ODNB). Based on Russell's Trinity College fellowship dissertation, An Essay on the Foundations of Geometry "provides a partial defence of Kant's theory that the truth of geometry is a necessary condition of all possible experience ? Russell later dismissed the book as a foolish and immature work, and its central claims have not been accepted by either mathematicians or philosophers. None the less, principally through being reviewed at length and with great respect by the eminent French mathematician Henri Poincaré, it served to establish Russell's professional reputation and led to his being invited to deliver a paper at the prestigious International Congress of Philosophy held in Paris in 1900, an event that profoundly affected his career" (idem).

PAVLOV'S MAIN WORK] Lectures on the Work of the Principal Digestive Glands

I.N. Kushnereff & Ko, St. Petersburg 1897 - [Lektsii o rabote glavnykh pishchevaritelnykh zhelyoz] [6], II, 223 p. 8vo. Contemporary owner's cardboards, original wrapper is glued to the front board. The owner's inscription (dated 15/XII/1902) on the wrapper. The private stamp of L.E. Gakkel on the title verso. Good clean copy. The binding is slightly shattered, one of the signatures can be detached. The edges of the binding are rubbed, the paper on corner of the rear board is missing. Rare. First edition. The ground-breaking work in the field of physiology. Undoubtedly one of the main works of Russian science. Ivan Pavlov (1849-1936) was a Russian physiologist who contributed to many areas of neurological sciences. During the 1890s he was looking at salivation in dogs as a response to being fed, when he noticed that his dogs would begin to salivate whenever he entered the room, even when he was not bringing them food. At first he found this something of a nuisance, but what he had accidentally discovered was the phenomenon of classical conditioning. Pavlov performed and directed experiments on digestion, eventually publishing this work after 12 years of research. He won the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1904 for his work. His discovery has gained growing significance in political practices and sociological sciences. He concluded that even such concepts as freedom, curiosity and religion were conditioned reflexes of the brain. ''Essentially, only one thing in life is of real interest to us- our psychical experience,'' he said in his Nobel address. ''Its mechanism, however, was and still is shrouded in profound obscurity. All human resources-art, religion, literature, philosophy, and the historical sciences-all have joined in the attempt to throw light upon this darkness. But humanity has at its disposal yet another powerful resource-natural science with its strict objective methods.''. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Old and New London

London - Cassell, Petter, Galpin and Co., 1897 Book. VERY GOOD INDEED. Hardcover. A fascinating look at London life, with details of the history of the city, its influential characters, and geographical studies of places of interest. A new edition, carefully revised and corrected. George Walter Thornbury (1828, London - 11 June 1876, London) was an English author. These are volumes for the true Antiquarian, not the scientific historian of today, who often no longer remembers why he plys his craft. A true sense of passion for the old times saturates these pages, and conjures up vivid images of the old times in the mind of the reader, almost in a Dickensian manner. His style of writing is as antique as the monuments and events he describes. It is replete with dozens of evocative engravings of ancient monuments, or recreations of notable events. It is not without great academic merit, although it was clearly not written as an academic work. The facts themselves are reliable, thoroughly researched, yet are presented with a flavour of sentimentality which makes them a pleasure for the imaginative reader to absorb and ponder over. The primary urge engendered on finishing any chapter is to go and visit the site, and see it for one's self. Illustrated throughout with many engravings in the text and six frontispieces (one to each volume). Including chapters on Fleet Street, Roman London, St Paul's, Saxon London, and many other topics. Complete in six volumes. Condition: Rebound in brown cloth bindings. Externally, very smart. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are quite bright, though with some scattered light spotting. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED..

        L'Ermitage. Revue illustree.

Poster for the illusrated magazine, "L'Ermitage". Etampes: Enard 1897. Published in "Les Maitres de l'Affiche", 1900. Plate no. 227. Les Maîtres de l'Affiche (The Masters of the Poster) refers to 256 colour lithographic plates used to create a very significant art publication during the Belle Époque in Paris, France. The collection, reproduced from the original works of ninety-seven artists in a smaller format, was put together by Jules Chéret, the father of poster art. By the 1890's the streets of French cities were enlivened by large, colourful posters. The poster had not only caught the fancy of the public, but its best examples were already being regarded as true works of art (specifically, as fine prints) to be exhibited, reviewed in journals, collected and reproduced in a more manageable form. In the last five years of the 19th century, Imprimerie Chaix was to play a great part in codifying, hallowing and perpetuating the ebullient spirit of the Belle Epoque. The renowned set of 256 prints were created by Imprimerie Chaix, forever to be known as a set as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche. Each print was rendered as a separate sheet measuring 11 x 15 inches. [27.9 x 38.1 cm]. The set was compiled in a unique way: Every month for 60 months - from December 1895 through November 1900 - subscribers received a wrapper containing four consecutively numbered prints. On 16 occasions (each of the five Decembers, each of the Junes, and the March and September of the final three years) the monthly wrapper also contained a bonus plate, not a poster reproduction but a specially created lithograph. The compilation of this set of original prints makes up the complete suite known as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche.

Paris, Zo d'Axa, oct. 1897 - mars. 1899. de 26 feuilles demi toile verte de l'époque oct. 1897 - mars. 1899, oct. 1897 - mars. Bel exemplaire

THE BOOK OF THE THOUSAND NIGHTS AND A NIGHT

London: H. S. Nichols Ltd.. Complete 12 volume set handsomely bound in 3/4 burgundy leather. 1897. hb. Royal 8vo, . More colloquially known as "The Arabian Nights", this magnificant work was first published in 1885 by Burton through the private Kamashastra Society in order to evade the likely consequences of publishing commercially what was perceived at the time to be pornography. Each of the volumes in this set has the name of the society stamped at the bottom of the spine and is "Illustrated by a Series of seventy-one original illustrations reproduced from the Original Pictures in Oils specially painted by Albert Letchford". Each engraving carries the original printed tissue-guard. Each book measures 26 x 18 cms and the "pebbled" leather is bound over woven green cloth with the top edge gilt. The endpapers are marbled and each front endpaper carries the attractive bookplate of J. H. Burton, which depicts a schooner with all sails set, and is bordered by mermaids. The bookplate is initialled in the plate "H.N." (being Harold Nelson, the famed British bookplate designer, artist and engraver). The extremities of each volume do show some rubbing, but it is not untoward. The hinges are tight and the contents are in exceptionally good condition - in fact, the volumes appear never to have been read. We have taken detailed photographs of the set and they are available upon application. .
