Prague: C. k. skolní knihosklad 1896 - Quarto (29 × 21 cm). Contemporary paper-covered cloth; 45 leaves. About very good; canceled stamps of a provincial Czech school.         Harper's Bazaar 1896. FULL YEAR BOUND VOLUME.

Harper Brothers. New York. 1896. - Massive volume; three-quarter leather binding 16 x 11 inches; 1100 pp. Fifty-two lavishly illustrated issues including Supplements. Of great interest are the 23 tipped-in folded patterns for clothing (on light-weight paper): these are for women's garments, young girls' garments; etc. Except for two that are loose, these are bound into the volume, and all are in very good condition. Copious illustrations of women's and young girls' costumes are featured in the newspaper; these include bicycling costumes, formal evening wear, sporting costumes, gowns for various occasions including weddings; also shawls, hats, embroidery patterns and more. Emphasis is placed on sport for women: side saddle horseback riding; crewing (rowing); basketball; golf; etc. Greatest emphasis, however, is placed on bicycling, with numerous illustrations depicting a woman and her "wheel"; considerable advertising aimed at this new market, eg. a full page article by Martha McCulloch-Williams endorsing Fibre Chamois with four illustrations of costumes by Redfern; also a multi-page article on "The Making of a Woman's Bicycle," and more. Full-page illustrations of costumes by M. Felix and House of Worth. Several pages in the December 12 issue are duplicated and/or bound out of sequence. There are several short marginal tears (repaired with archival tape). Abrasions to exterior: spine edges and corners of covers; overall very good clean condition. ITEM WEIGHS APPROXIMATELY 20 LBS - WE WILL QUOTE EXTRA SHIPPING CHARGES. The rear pages of each issue of the newspaper feature captioned cartoon images (6 x 4.5 inches or so) focusing on class-centered faux pas as well as African-American, Irish or Chinese characters whose utterances are rendered in dialect. The newspaper's extensive single and double-page illustrations focus on costumes of the day (many by Felix and Worth) but other features reflect wider-ranging interests: these include profiles of Helen Keller and Harriet Beecher Stowe and fiction by Octave Thanet. Illustrations of theatrical interest include illustrated product endorsements offered by Lillian Russell and Sarah Bernhardt. Loads of full-page illustrations of British royalty and English historical subjects make clear the Anglophile leanings of the publisher and no doubt the bulk of the newspaper's readers. The volume was part of the library of Jacob Kamm of Portland Oregon. Kamm, a prominent businessman in 19th century Portland, founded the Oregon Steam Navigation Company and was heavily involved in real estate in the city. His estate was valued at over four million dollars at the time of his death in 1912. The volume is in very good condition, tight and attractive in its binding. Uncommon in such good condition.         The Jungle Book

The boards are slightly rubbed and bumped, with the spine a little faded. The text block is slightly toned and foxed with a neatly written name to the first blank page and a bookplate to the inside front board. The dust jacket has had minor restoration at some point in the distant past, it is slightly toned and grubby, with a few nicks and slight splits at the folds. A very rare find with the dust jacket, which unusually for a jacket of this period has plenty of visual appeal.

Il manifesto del partito comunista con un nuovo proemio al lettore italiano. 2 edizione

Uffici della Critica Sociale, 1896. In 16, pp. 48. 37 ALS, 2 APCs, 3 AMs and 8 visiting cards. Vienna, 1896-1903.

1896. Mostly 8vo. Altogether 82½ pp. Some addenda. Comprehensive correspondence on contemporary matters of the Raimund Theater, where the author served as Director from 1893-1896, and of the Kaiser-Jubiläums-Stadttheaters, which he directed until 1903. Aside from matters of ownership, performance, and financial concerns, private affairs are also included - for example, a famous rumour spread during his tenure at the Kaiser-Jubiläums-Stadttheater which fanned division between writer and addressor: "They are openly anxious to cause trouble among us, and I want to confront this immediately. Not through reports in the newspapers, but rather though the channels with which I can personally explain things. I explained to the man from the Allgem[einen] Z[ei]t[un]g: 'Each day, one puts out another rumour into the world. You have recently read in the >Zeit< that Herr Schwer wants to become Director here. But it's not all true!' I told a man from the N[euen] W[iene]r Journal: 'It could well be, that in the city hall there is an aggrieved author, known in the party as an authority on theatrical things, who doesn't speak well of me.' And I explain, that I had in mind a completely different gentleman to what you thought! [...]" (letter v. 19. II. 1903)- Including manuscripts entitled "Fräulein Niese in Berlin", "Vom Jubiläums-Theater" and "Eine komische Scene" (the latter in three folio leaves, each cracked at the fold). - The humbly-raised author who also wrote under the pseudonyms Ignotus, Franz Joseph Gerhold, and Vetter Michel, arrived in Vienna as a barber's assistant, where he quickly busied himself with his own studies, excelled at writing, and became a member of the Viennese literary-artistic society as well as feature editor of the "Deutschen Zeitung", inspiring a national regeneration of Viennese theatre life. "In his polemical works Müller-Guttenbrunn and others called for the establishment of a Folk Theatre ('Vienna was a Theatre City', 1885) and the founding of a German-directed association for popular education. From 1893-96 he directed the Raimund Theatre, moving on to the Kaiser-Jubiläums-Stadttheater in 1898, where he sought to realize his national goals with the aid of 'German-spirited' repertoires and economical 'folk productions'" (DBE). After retiring from the theatre, he continued to campaign for "the strengthening of the national and local awareness of the Banater Swabians. As a representative of the Austrian national parliament, he continued his struggle on a political level from 1919" (DBE). - The letters are mainly on writing paper with printed header of the "Kaiser-Jubiläums-Stadttheaters"; the letter v. 8. VI. 1901 to an unidentified addressee concerns the unsuccessful production of Heinrich Hierhammer's 'Volksstück', "Der Dorflump von Dellach" and the resulting disagreements over financial settlements. - A separate paper (7 pp on 4 leaves (numbered p. (160)-166, 8vo) has several editorial comments, probably from the hand of H. A. Schwer.

Prag, Selbstverlag. Printed for the Author by Carl Bellmann; Leipzig, Karl W. Hiersemann 1896 - Thick crown quarto. Pp. (viii), 631. Plus 48 fine collotype plates, almost all with multiple images to each, with facing tissue guards. With 48 woodcut illustrations to text. Half-title present. Hardcover, bound in full cloth, with the original printed wrapper, slightly soiled, laid-down. In fine condition. Excellent copy in exceptional state of preservation. ~ First edition. Comprehensive reference work on early fencing treatises. Beautifully illustrated. Collotype is one of the most accurate and attractive methods of photomechanical tonal printing processes. Highly skilled and expensive process, it cannot produce more than a limited number of impressions. It has been used for single-sheet prints and luxury portfolios, and since the 1950s has been abandoned by all except a few small specialist firms. Hergsell has published this outstanding work himself. It was later adopted by the publishing house of Karl W. Hiersemann, of Leipzig, who added their stamp to title-page. ~ Provenance: from the Rainer Köbelin Historisches Fechtarchiv, München, with a small, elegant bookplate to that effect.

The Well at the World's End.

Hammersmith: The Kelmscott Press,, 1896. Large quarto. Original full limp vellum by J. and J. Leighton of London, three pairs of green silk ties, titles to spine gilt, edges untrimmed. Printed in the Chaucer type in double columns, black and red, with elaborate woodcut title page and 3 designs by Sir Edward Burne-Jones, woodcut initials and borders by Morris throughout. Date of acquisition "April 22nd 1916" in ink on an early blank. Crease to vellum towards head of spine, gilt a little rubbed in places, a sprinkle of spotting to front free endpaper and to edges, ties slightly faded at ends, these flaws minor only: an excellent copy. First Kelmscott edition, one of 350 copies on paper; there were also eight copies on vellum. Because of various production delays this splendid Kelmscott Press book spent several years in the making. Although William Morris had originally intended the Kelmscott edition to be the first, the more conventional Chiswick Press edition had been issued before this, in 1894.

Portrait of Stefan George and Albert Verwey. Drypoint on Simili Japon paper.

Image size: 15.8 x 15.8 cm. Twice signed in the plate with the text (partly reversed and partly overlapping): 'Stefan George Alb. Verwey / Stefan George / Katwyk 19002 [sic] / Zee'. Numbered in pencil bottom left: '20 / 25 '. Borders around the picture slightly discolored by former framing.* Rare original etching by Toorop with a high literary level: in 1896, Toorop, after attending a lecture by Stefan George in The Hague, etched the portrait of the German poet, adding the portrait of his friend Albert Verwey in 1902. The plan for this double portrait was developed in 1900, and a few proofs were printed. An edition of the etching was issued only after the death of Toorop, in 1928, by A.C. Ninaber van Eyben who printed various etchings and woodcuts of Toorop prints in runs of 10 to 25 pieces. The zinc plate of the etching is in the Rijksprentenkabinet, Amsterdam.

Rouen-Exposition. Bulletin Officiel de l'Exposition Nationale et Coloniale de Rouen en 1896. No. 1 through No. 32

264 pp. official bulletin from the exposition inaugurated on May 16, 1896, under the editorial direction of Émile Deshays, containing information on the various facets of the exposition, including the different pavilions, events, and architects. Tables, indices. Illustrated profusely throughout from photographs and drawings, including thirty-five full-page plates. Some toning to edges, scattered minor soiling and foxing. 4to. Leather-backed boards, raised spine. Some rubbing along spine and to front cover. Rouen (Imprimerie Émile Deshays et Ce.) 1896. One of the main highlights of this exposition was the "negro" village installed along the Champ de Mars, in which 120 paid Africans from differing groups and villages lived in a 2000-square-meter area with a lake and were forbidden to leave their enclosure. Some villagers made crafts, women washed clothes, children went swimming, and a marriage and two births took place, all in front of the gawking eyes of 600,000 visitors fascinated by the primitive lifestyle. As of August 2016, WorldCat locates only one holding of this title in the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris, and none in North America.
