John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1896 - 1896 Wisden Rebound with Covers Rebound Hardback?

1896. Hi, This is a rebound 1896 Wisden , it is rebound with covers. It could be one of the most expensive mistakes a collector has made as not only has it the original covers, it also has the yellow pastedowns of an original hardback and I have check them vs mine and they are the same pages. I am guessing the owner has all their books rebound the same as we have a similar 1894/5. This Wisden is in Very Good condition. The boards are very eligant in a dark reddy colour with corners ans spine cloth in a very nice material, not sure if it is leather but very pleasing on the eye. Very nice covers and clean pages and a great photo of WG. Hardly any spotting, a very nice and interesting Wisden.

Moscow: Tipo-lit. Tov-va I.N. Kushnera, 1896. Pp. 117-161. 23,7x15 cm. In modern half-leather and case. Fine, a few pencil markings. First publication of Chekhov's The Seagull. Very rare. The Seagull is generally considered to be the first of his four major plays. The play was written in 1895 and first produced in 1896. After the production failed Chekhov was in embittered mood even though he was receiving good reviews and support. He at first turned down Lavrov's and Goltsev's offer to publish the text of the play in 'Russian Thought' and gave his permission only after their repeated and insistent pleas. In its printed form the play brought Chekhov many new admirers but it also was rejected by some people. That first production had censor corrections but in first publication Chekhov removed those corrections.

Moko; or Maori Tattooing

London: Chapman and Hall, 1896. First edition. Frontispiece, 180 illustrations from drawings by the author and from photographs. xxi, 216 pp. 4to. A very good copy in original brown pictorial cloth, with Maori tattoo illustration on the covers. Gilt lettering on cover and spine, bookplate of I. Eliot Hodgrin to front pastedown. Extremities rubbed, occasional foxing throughout. First edition. Frontispiece, 180 illustrations from drawings by the author and from photographs. xxi, 216 pp. 4to. Specialized record of tattoo patterns and a collection of dried heads. A classic ethnography on the Maoris and the long tradition of tattooing. Profusely illustrated, this valuable history showcases the creativity and craft of the native artists. In 1863, Major-General Robley (1840-1930) with the 68th Regiment debarked Burma for New Zealand. In the following April, Robley took his troops to join General Cameron's forces attacking Gate Pa in Tauranga. During the 19 months he remained there with his troops, he became fascinated with the Maori people and executed a series of sketches of Maori life and tattoo patterns, as well as documenting the process practiced to preserve the tattooed heads of chiefs. "On these two subjects he regarded himself as an authority, a claim not to be disputed provided we bear in mind that his awareness was that of a curio collector, and not that of a scholar"-William John Phillipps Hocken refers to plans for a second edition in 1909 which was never published.
