FIRST PRINTING, RARE OFFPRINT in original wrappers of Rontgen's announcement of the discovery of the X-ray. "Hertz and Lenard had published on the penetrating powers of cathode rays (electrons) and Rontgen thought that there were unsolved problems worth investigation... As a preliminary to viewing the cathode rays on a fluorescent screen, Rontgen completely covered his discharge tube with a black card, and then chanced to notice that such a screen lying on a bench some distance away was glowing brightly. Although others had operated Crookes tubes in laboratories for over thirty years, it was Rontgen who found that X rays are emitted by the part of the glass wall of the tube that is opposite the cathode and that receives the beam of cathode rays. He spent six weeks in absolute concentration, repeating and extending his observations on the properties of the new rays. He found that they travel in straight lines, cannot be refracted or reflected, are not deviated by a magnet, and can travel about two meters in air. He soon discovered the penetrating properties of the rays... The apparent magical nature of the new rays was something of a shock even to Rontgen... On 22 December he brought his wife into the laboratory and made an X-ray photograph of her hand" (Dictionary of Scientific Biography).Rontgen now needed to "substantiate his discovery if he was to claim priority and the credit of the scientific community... He persuaded a friend, the president of the local Physical Medical Society in Wurzberg, to include a handwritten paper, announcing the discovery of his 'new kind of rays', as a very late addition to the society's proceedings. He had priority of publication.       London: C.F. Keill Printer 8 Furnival Street London E.C. mid November 1896 London: "C.F. Keill, Printer 8, Furnival Street London, E.C.", [mid-November, 1896]. 12-1/2 x 10 inches. Color lithograph, with artist's printed monogram lower left. In red, green, black and white. Sheet toned, old fold, some minor soiling, wrinkles and closed tears in margin, small loss from bottom margin not affecting image. Colors bold and bright. Very good plus. MacFall, Aubrey Beardsley, pp. 159-160; Lasner 103B . The Savoy was the creation of Leonard Smithers, who decided to create a magazine to rival The Yellow Book, from which Beardsley had just been expelled. Smithers had the foresight to select Arthur Symons, the poet and essayist, as literary editor and Beardsley as art editor. It was in the summer of 1895 that Symons visited Beardsley to discuss the idea of the new magazine and at their meeting they came up with the name and decided on the format. In Symons, Beardsley found the perfect working partner, "a thoroughly loyal man, a man of fine fibre in letters, he had far more than the ordinary cultured literary man's feeling for pictorial art" (MacFall). "It was to this dandified fantastic adventurer [Smithers] that Beardsley was wholly to owe the great opportunity of his life to achieve his supreme master-work" (MacFall). Beardsley had been suffering from ill health when he left The Yellow Book, but this new venture restored his vitality and enthusiasm. Beardsley adapted the design for this Poster, advertising the collected three-volume set of the magazine at one guinea, from the front cover design for the final issue (No. 8), which appeared in December, 1896

Paul Eduard Didier Riant forskade i huvudsak om det Ottomanska riket och korstågen, men han fick med tiden ett alltmer tilltagande intresse för Sverige och Skandinavien, något som inte minst avspeglades i hans bokhyllor. Han avled 1888 och efterlämnade en enastående boksamling till försäljning i två delar. Den första katalogen med den skandinaviska samlingen omfattar 2641 nummer och här finns bl.a. Birgittas uppenbarelser i Gothanupplagan 1492, Olaus Magnus 1555, tretton Kankel-tryck och en post omfattande 19000 avhandlingar (inköpta från Gabriel Marklin). Klemming och Riant hade omfattande bytesförbindelser och Riant understödde flera av Klemmings utgivningsprojekt.         Codice Messicano Vaticano no. 3773

      Roma: Stabilimento Danesi. 1896. An 1896 facsimile of a Precolumbian Mexican codex produced by the Duke of Loubat from the original housed in the Vatican library. Joseph Florimond Loubat, whose title was conferred on him by Pope Leo XIII in recognition of his large gifts to the Catholic Church, was an American philanthropist who had, among other things, an interest in pre-Columbian Mesoamerican history and archaeology. In particular, he studied and wrote commentaries on a number of the surviving pre-Columbian codices, including this one. In 1896, to correct an error in an earlier description and transliteration of this particular codex, he commissioned a facsimile edition to be done using photochromography, reproducing the entire 48 leaves of the folding codex, as well as reproducing the wooden binding of the codex. Fifty copies of the facsimile were created, each housed in a folding wood-and-leather box along with three pamphlets about the codex, one in English, one in Italian, and one in Spanish. The facsimile codex and the three pamphlets are here present and complete as issued; each bears ex-library markings from a no longer extant Catholic school. A rare edition: OCLC locates only three copies. In original quarter leather wooden box (damaged). Otherwise, very good. . First Edition. Hardcover.

      Issued by the Marquess of Lothian, K.T., chiefly from plants in his collection of orchids at Newbattle Abbey. With additional notes by F.C. Lehmann (German Consul in the Republic of Colombia). London, R.H. Porter, 1896. Folio (435 x 315mm). pp. (228), with 1 double-page chromolithographed map, 87 (1 double-page) handcoloured lithographed plates and 61 wood-engravings in the text. Contemporary half green morocco, spine with 5 raised bands gilt ornaments and lettering. A good copy of this rare and most beautiful publication on the genus Masdevallia. "The original intention was to issue 250 copies, and it has been estimated that approx. 150 were actually issued, with just over 100 being bound" (S. Manning, Florence H. Woolward botanical artist 1854-1936, published in 'The Orchid Review' vol. 104). "Since the article you quote was written, I obtained the handwritten account book of Florence Woolward dealing with the printing and publication of 'The Genus Masdevallia'. In it, details show clearly that only 100 copies were printed" (Personal e-mail from Steve Manning). The magnificently executed plates are drawn and lithographed by the author herself. These handcoloured lithographs depict all Masdevallia-species in cultivation life-size. Excellent wood-engravings after a photograph of the perfect plant are given in the text. 'Drawings also of numerous species entirely unknown in this country, or known hitherto only as dried specimens, are generously promised by Consul F.C. Lehmann, whose exceptional advantages as a skilled botanist collecting for many years in those regions of Central and South America where alone Masdevallias are found, place him at the head of authorities upon the genus' (From the Preface). Volumes 2 from 1891 and Volume 1 from 1889 are both worn blue cloth prize bindings awarded to an "AHS Gillson St. Johns' College Cambridge in 1909". Traite de Mechanique Celeste is Tisserand's greatest work, an up-to-date version of La-place's Mecanique Celeste. -DSB Corners worn on all volumes, clean internally noting occasional marginal notes in the Gillson volumes. Bindings are fundamentally sound but joints are worn or cracked, with significant wear to the head and tail of spine panel on the Gillson volumes. Good.

      Philadelphia: S. Burns Weston, 1896. First Edition. Hardcover. Some darkening to the pastedowns from the glue used. Light rubbing to the spine edges. Near Fine, lacking the dustwrapper, if it ever had one. A small (4-1/8" x 6-3/8"), slim (63 pages) volume bound in brown flexible cloth lettered in gilt on the front cover. An address originally given before the Young Men's Christian Association of Harvard University in May of 1895 and later given at the Society for Ethical Culture of Philadelphia. SIGNED by the author on a front blank: "Wm James/Harvard University/Jan. 7, 1897." Books signed by this great American psychologist and philosopher are excessively scarce. Name of Harvard Philosophy Professor George V. Dearborn, dated December 1896, on the front endpaper. William James, brother of the noted novelist Henry James, Jr., is generally conceded to be, along with Emerson, the greatest philosophic American mind. He is best known for his book VARIETIES OF RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE and his theory of Pragmatism, an advanced philosophy based on the doctrine that truth is based on experience and observation.

This illustrated literary anthology lists among its contributors: Austin Dobson, Edmund Gosse, Max Beerbohm, W.B. Yeats, A.C. Swinburne, D.G. Small 4to. 57, [1] pp. Printed at the Chiswick Press. Vellum paper over boards, with design on the front cover by Aubrey Beardsley, upper joint cracked, covers and spine rubbed and soiled, text with some stains and soiling, occasional tears at margins from carelesss opening, in custom jacket and box (defective). Nelson and Mendes 1896.9; Lasner, Beardsley 106; Hayward, English Poetrey 307; Turn of A Century, 1885-1910 Exhibtion Cartalog #30 . The first book by Dowson, contiaining his most famous poem "Non Sum Qualis Eram -" with the refrain "I have been faithful to thee, Cynara, in my fashion!" An interesting, albeit somewhat worn copy of this Dowson rarity, certainly one of the cornerstones of the literature of the 90s, here in its rarest state; and with a previous owner's manuscript quotation from Joseph Roux penned on the inside front cover in purple ink ("Qu'est-ce [que] l'expErience? Une pauvre petite cabane construite avec les dEbris de ces palais d'or et de marbre appelEs nos illusions" ["What is experience? A pitiful little shack built out of the ruins of those gold and marbled palaces called our illusions"]), and a note in pencil to the effect that this is critic "Henry Davray's copy, with an epigram inscribed by Ernest Dowon on the inner cover" (Dowson dedicated his poem "To One in Bedlam" to Davray). The epigram is certainly not from Dowson; we see no evidence that it is in his hand, or that the copy is Davray's

During his lifetime, he was upheld as one of the greatest living American intellectuals, and knew personally many of the leading political figures of the day, in both the United States and Britain. Twain wrote TOM SAWYER ABROAD, with Tom, Huck and Jim traveling all over the world in a self-propelled balloon, in an attempt to combine the popularity of Tom and Huck with the popularity of Jules Verne. In March 1894, Twain himself published that book (under the name of Charles L. Webster & Co.); a month later Twain abandoned the publishing house (and his ill-advised efforts with the Paige typesetter) and filed for personal bankruptcy. Two years later Twain was similarly hoping to capitalize on the popularity of Sherlock Holmes (whose "Adventures" and "Memoirs" had just been published in the U.S. by Harper) -- and the result was TOM SAWYER, DETECTIVE. In the U.S., with "Charles L. Webster & Co." out of business, Harper published this volume containing these new detective adventures together with the earlier balloon adventures (as well as some other earlier pieces); this was done a week before Chatto & Windus of London published TOM SAWYER, DETECTIVE by itself.</p> <p>For reasons not entirely known, this hefty 412-page volume has become one of the (if not <i>the</i>) scarcest of all of Twain&#39;s later works. Although the number of copies printed is unknown, clearly Harper produced a very small edition. Perhaps it was that half of the book had already appeared two years earlier; perhaps it had to do with Harper knowing that the new half was prompted by their new client from England (whom they did not wish to offend), Arthur Conan Doyle.</p> <p>In any event, this is a <i>tough</i> first edition to find, and even then it typically shows up in miserable condition. This however is a near-fine copy, with a little of the almost-unavoidable fading of the spine; the volume is not at all askew, though copies usually are. There is just the merest hint of shelfwear at the corners, a small corner chipped off the rear free endpaper, and a bookplate plus Christmas 1896 inscription on the front pastedown. In all, it is the best copy we have seen (and we have not seen many) in over twenty years. Blanck 3447 (this edition is <i>not</i> cited in the McBride bibliography of Twain, as it was lacking from the two Hartford collections upon which that reference work was based). Unfortunately in 1897 Bradley&#39;s health suffered; he had to sell the Wayside Press and was unable to complete the final number of volume II. Spines are significantly sunned and the leather and marbled paper are rubbed in places. A fine copy of the bound seven numbers; the leather of the binding is sunned on the spines and rear board of Volume II, and the leather and paper are rubbed. Overall a nice copy in a very good binding. Scarce.

        Ford Madox Brown: A Record of His Life and Work

      London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1896. Hard Cover. TIPPED IN 2 PAGE AUTOGRAPH LETTER FROM FORD MADOX BROWN AND INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR. The book was inscribed in 1929 to noted book collector Frank Irving Fletcher from Ford Madox Hueffer, with "Mr. Ford" in parentheses. The letter from Ford Madox Brown is dated November 27, 1892, and is written to the poet William Allingham. The letter says "My dear Allingham, I am putting in for the Slade Professorship at Cambridge and I don&#39;t think it likely that anyone more to your tastes is likely to come forward - If you know any that are high in office there and find yourself able at any time to say a good word for me, will you remember it. I shall most likely print some address, but print [crossed out] offer no testimonials and make no canvass - we have not been [?] for a good while but have ourselves been very quiet and in part of the time [?] since Cathy&#39;s marriage. Trusting soon to meet again believe me ever yours sincerely Ford Madox Brown." This extensive biography of one of the great artists of the Victorian age was written by his also famous grandson, the author Ford Madox Ford, who later changed his last name from Hueffer in homage to his grandfather. Although Madox Brown was never a member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, he was closely associated with them, in particular, with Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Bound in white cloth with beautiful and intricate green, blue, red design by Walter Crane, with gilt stamped title and author to front board and bright gilt title author and title to spine. The covers are generally quite bright and clean, although there is some browning to the spine and minor rubbing to cloth along head of spine as well as some smudging to the rear board and minor wear to the corners. The interior is in beautiful condition. The frontispiece and many of the 40+ black or sepia and white illustrations are protected with labeled tissue guards. Bookplate of noted oilman and collector Frank Hadley affixed to front pastedown. The bookplate appropriately depicts oil wells. An exceptional copy of an interesting association copy. 459 pages including appendices and index. PRERAPH/101110. Very Good.

Hooper, C.E. Keates and W. Spielmeyer, 87 woodcut illustrations designed by Sir Edward Burne-Jones, redrawn by Robert Catterson-Smith and cut by W.H. Hooper. Red morocco gilt, the covers with thin outer triple fillet gilt borders surrounding a large area of inlaid blue morocco, the onlays tooled with a wide elaborate border of interlacing strapwork, the spine in six compartments with raised bands, the bands highlighted with gilt fillets, lettered in the second compartment, the others with simple repeat pattern, the wide gilt turn-ins with an elaborate overall design incorporating fillets and overall gilt scrolling stylized foliage with a three-leaved fleuron tool and extensive use of small circlets to represent berries, morocco pastedowns with an elaborate gilt-tooled border incorporating a brown morocco inlay, gilt fillets and cornerpieces tooled with stylized foliage, blue morocco front and rear free endleaf panelled in gilt with five fillets, red morocco box, lettered and tooled in gilt. "The Chaucer is not only the most important of the Kelmscott Press&#39;s productions; it is also one of the great books of the world" (Ray). The work was four years in the making and was produced by Morris completely without compromise: the text used was the best and most complete available, the paper was specially made entirely of linen rag, a new typeface was designed by Morris and cut purely for this work and a suite of exquisite illustrations was provided by Burne-Jones. Limited edition of 438 copies, this one of 425 copies. The germ of the idea for the Kelmscott Chaucer may well have sprung from Morris and Burne- Jones&#39;s days at Oxford where Morris is known to have developed a deep appreciation of Chaucer&#39;s works. Shortly after Morris founded the Kelmscott Press in 1891, he announced his intention of publishing an edition of Chaucer. The text was based on the Ellesmere manuscript (now in the Huntingdon Library, San Marino), as emended by Walter William Skeat, Professor of Anglo-Saxon at Cambridge (From Manet to Hockney), but it was only with difficulty that Morris was able to get permission from the Clarendon Press to use Skeat&#39;s version. Morris was not satisfied with any of the papers available and commissioned a supply of pure rag paper which incorporated a watermark designed by him. Morris initially intended to use his Troy typeface, but again was unhappy with the initial trials and another typeface, "Chaucer," was especially produced for this work (Morris did still use the Troy type for the titles of the longer poems). The illustrations took Burne-Jones over three years to design: the original intention had been that the work should include 48 designs, but, with Morris&#39;s approval, this was gradually increased by the artist to 60, then 72, then 87. This profusion of illustrations, recalling the stained- glass windows of the medieval church, has resulted in what Burne-Jones aptly called "a pocket cathedral, it is so full of design." "Thanks to R. Catterson-Smith&#39;s bold redrawing in ink of Burne-Jones&#39;s pencil drawings and the fine wood engravings which W.H. Hooper made ... they have ... the strength and stylistic consistency of the best fifteenth-century illustrations" (Ray p.159). By the time the work was finished Morris was already unwell with what was to prove to be his final illness, and the Kelmscott Chaucer remains a worthy swansong. Burne-Jones considered it the "finest book ever printed; if W. M.[orris] had done nothing else it would be enough" and Eleanor Garvey, writing in The Artist and the Book noted that it was perhaps "the most famous book of the modern private press movement, and the culmination of William Morris&#39; endeavour."       Paris, Calmann-Lévy, 1896 + 1923. Both copies are uncut, numbered and on extra fine paper. They are bound w. all the orig. wrappers in two private very beautiful uniform half leather bindings of darker orange (like the wrappers) morocco w. single gilt line-frames and gilt titles on back. Flat capitals and top-edges gilt (Anker Kysters Eftf. 1977, -handsigned underneth the bookbinder-stamp by the particular bookbinder - "Mogens Dickow Lund"). Small tear to corner of back wrapper of"Lettres Intimes", otherwise a mint set.. First edition, numbered copies, of both works. The "Lettres Intimes" is number 5 of fifteen copies printed on Japan-paper: "Il a été tiré de cet ouvrage quinze exemplaires sur papier Impérial du Japon. Tous numérotés. No. 5." "Nouvelles Lettres Intimes" is number four of 50 copies on Holland-paper: "Il a été tiré de cet ouvrage cinquante exemplaires sur papier de Hollande numérotés. No. 4."Ernest Renan (1823-1892) was a French philologist, philosopher and historian. His father died when he was aged five, and his mother wanted him to become a priest. Until he was about 16 years old, he was trained by the Church, but due to his investigative and truth-seeking nature as well as his studies (e.g. Hebrew), he was in doubt as to the historical truth of the Scriptures, and with the help of his sister he chose his own path in life. "He studied intensively the languages of the Bible and filled a number of minor academic positions, frequently encountering difficulties because of the heterodoxy and outspokenness of his religious opinions." (Printing and the Mind of Man 352). In 1840 he began studying philosophy and later philology, in 1847 he took his degree as Agrégé de Philosophie and became master at the Lycée of Vendome. After having returned from a mission to Italy in the year 1850 where he gathered material for his historical-philosophical masterpiece, "Averroës et l'Averroisme", he was offered employment at the "Bibliothèque Nationale" (at the manuscript department). In 1861 he was chosen to become professor of Hebrew at the Collège de France, but because the emperor refused to ratify the appointment (inspired by the Clerical party), he was not established in the chair untill 1870. In 1878 he was elected for the Academy. Renan is considered a scolar of the greatest excellence and an impressive writer. Renan's closest confidante was his sister, Henriette, who helped him quit the clerical carrier. They helped eachother financially, travelled together (e.g. on archaeological expeditions) and lived together for many years of their lives. His widely famous work, "Vie de Jésus" is dedicated to her, and their correspondence is very interesting and catching

His decorated borders clearly showing an influence by Aubrey Beardsley (La Morte d'Arthur) and William Morris and his Kelmscott Press.William Brown Macdougall (1868 - 1936) received his art education at the Glasgow Academy and at the Académie Julian in Paris, also working in the studios of Bouguereau,Jean-Paul Laurens and Tony Robert-Fleury, and becoming a member of the Salon des Artistes Français

The Hutchinsons, a popular singing family, toured tirelessly in support of the abolitionists, the temperance movement and women's suffrage. 8vo., blue cloth, spine in gilt, t.e.g. Illustrated throughout. . The set is edgeworn with a little loss to the spine ends, the front hinge of volume 1 is cracked and both rear hinges starting, still a solid set. (Not in Dumond; not in Work). Quite scarce.
