        Faune 5.

[Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Single Hand-Colored Plate, the PSEUDONESTOR XANTHOPHYS From AVES HAWAIIENSES: The Birds of the Sandwich Islands

London: Taylor & Francis for R. H. Porter, Newman West Imprinter, 1896. From the first edition, the plate is accompanied by the original two pages of descriptive text. A beautifully produced hand coloured Lithograph by Frederick William Frowhawk of pair of Pseudonestor Xanthophys, the Maui Parrotbill, the most unusual of all Hawaiian finches and a species currently listed on the IUCN Red List as Critically Endangered. They are displayed among native foliage. Newman West was the Imprinter. Folio [325 x 260 mm], the lithograph is printed on heavy cream stock, accompanied by the text unbound. Beautifully preserved, the colours are bright and vivid, the paper clean and fresh. A SCARCE HAND-COLOURED LITHOGRAPH FROM ONE OF THE TWO GREATEST ORNITHOLOGICAL WORKS ON HAWAII. A beautiful publication, the plates for this work were produced over nearly a decade, containing magnificent hand-coloured lithographs of Hawaiian birds. The plates were drawn and lithographed by Frederick W. Frohawk, one of the leading English zoological artist and lepidopterist of his time. For backgrounds Frohawk drew upon the plates in Isabella Sincairs 1885 work, &#145;Indigenous Flowers of the Hawaiian Islands. The exact print run is unknown, but is believed to be roughly only 250 copies. <br> In 1887, with the support and encouragement of Alfred Newton (Professor of Zoology at Magdalene College in Cambridge), British ornithologist and explorer, Scott Barchard Wilson went to Hawaii to study and collect information on the local birds. Although scientific knowledge of some species have been obtained in 1778 by Captain James Cook, no serious ornithological exploration of the Islands has been taken place in over a century. On his return, Wilson, with the assistance of Arthur H. Evans, wrote Aves Hawaiienses. (Evans was a colleague of Professor Newton at Cambridge). The work became an instant success mainly due to the exquisite stunningly hand-colored plates, which were executed in fine detail. The plates show magnificent species such as the Hawaiian Honeycreeper, Palila, Alala, Mamo, Hawaiian Goose, Apapane, Amakihi, Moloka&#39;i and Maui Creeper, Akialoa, Maui & Kaua&#39;i Nukupu&#39;u, Kona Finch, Noio, Hawaiian Noddy, Moho, and many others. Hand-colored plates of the original edition were drawn and lithographed by renowned English zoological artist and lepidopterist, Frederick William Frohawk. Illustrations captioned with scientific names of each species. In the ensuing century, unfortunately half of the 64 species depicted in the work have become extinct or endangered.<br> This plate shows a pair of Maui Parrotbils, the most unusual of all the Hawaiian Finches of the Fringillidae family. The beautiful bright yellow and green feathers may seem typical enough, but this finch has a huge parrot-like hooked bill unlike any of the other Fringillidae. Rare in Wilson&#146;s time and even then only found in the highest forests of Haleakala. Today it is believed that their population could be as low as 250 mature individuals.

Pen Sketches of Los Angeles, California.

Elstner-Morehouse, Los Angeles: 1896 - 1 BEAUTIFUL COPY OF THIS VERY RARE LOS ANGELES SKETCHBOOK. With 36 full-page plates depicting early Los Angeles buildings. This unequaled record of the central Los Angeles business district, was created, according to the preface, in order " to show the active business portions, together with a few of the more pretentious of the office buildings and manufactories". Arthur Ellis was a founding member of the Zamorano Club. Provenance: Sam Behrendt, the son of Los Angeles pioneer Caspare Behrendt* (d.1913) (the discovery of gold brought him to California), "acquired his education in the Spring Street and Eighth Street Grammar Schools at Los Angeles, and after he was fifteen years old spent one year in a business college. For to years he clerked in a grocery and cigar business, and remained there until 1900. Selling out and returning to Los Angeles, he became connected with the San Gabriel Electric Company, later merged with the Pacific Light and Power Company. He was employed as a collector and later solicited new contracts for three years. On leaving that corporation, Mr. Behrendt entered the insurance business for himself, and in 1907 took in Mr. I. O. Levy as a partner under the name Behrendt-Levy Company, and they incorporated the business in 1908. This is a general insurance agency and the establishment now employs twenty-one people. Mr. Behrendt is also a director of the Union Bank and Trust Company and a director of the Shiff, Lang & Company." He is a member of Hollenbeck Lodge no. 119, a Scottish Rite Mason, and Shriner, Elk, Corona Parlor of the Native Sons of the Golden West, B&#146;nai Birth, Los Angeles Athletic Club, San Gabriel Country Club, City Club, Chamber of Commerce, Merchants and Manufacturers Association, and the Friars Club of New York. An account of the Norwegian Antarctic Expedition of 1894-95 led by Leonard Kristensen. Bull, a Melbourne resident, organized the voyage and served as its manager. This commercial enterprise in search of whaling grounds and seals was funded by the Norwegian whaler Svend Foyn. By late 1894 the ship had penetrated the pack ice and entered the Ross Sea. At Cape Adare a crew including Kristensen, Bull and Carstens Borchgrevink went ashore, becoming the first men to set foot on the continent. There are 12 plates in the book showing sealers at work, a portrait of Foyn, and many of the ship surrounded by icebergs. A good copy only with some heavily soiled pages and some edge-chipping.         THE FLOATING ISLAND

1896 - Or, The Pearl of the Pacific. London: Sampson Low, Marston & Company, 1896. Original olive green cloth pictorially decorated in black, blue, white and gilt, beveled, all edges gilt. First British Edition (and first edition in English).~It is about an enormous ship built by the Yanks, that has a great city on it, and is navigated about the world, playing ducks and drakes with geography and the balance of political power in the South Seas, until finally the savages of the New Hebrides and the forces of Nature rise up and annihilate it. [from a contemporary review cited in T&M]~Part of the "floating island's" problem is that its people are divided into two adversarial groups, the Larboardites and the Starboardites.~This tale was advertised as SCREW ISLAND until its title was changed just before publication in October 1896 (the French title had been L'ILE A HELICE, or "Propeller Island"). The book was not published in America until November 1897, by W. L. Allison Company.~This is an attractive copy, just about fine, with scarcely any soil or wear. Taves & Michaluk V043; Myers 23.         THE ILLUSTRATED DIRECTORY OF OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA COMPRISING VIEWS OF BUSINESS BLOCKS, WITH REFERENCE TO OWNERS, OCCUPANTS, PROFESSIONS AND TRADES, AND BRIEF HISTORY OF THE CITY.

Oakland. 1896. - 104,[2]pp. including dozens of illustrations, with text printed in double columns. Oblong quarto. Original pebbled cloth, title in gilt on front board, neatly rebacked with original spine laid down. Titlepage and following three leaves with slight wear at foredge, else quite clean internally. Very good. A marvelous illustrated directory of Oakland, California, containing scores of photo-engravings depicting several blocks of the bustling city. The first seventy-two pages contain very detailed drawings showing downtown Oakland block by block. The focus is on the main commercial streets, the same then as now. Most prominent are Broadway and Washington Street, each shown for several blocks. San Pablo Avenue is also included, as are Seventh to Fourteenth streets; and Park Street in Alameda and Shattuck Avenue in Berkeley are also shown. The buildings are shown in great detail, reproducing store facades and business names. Most of the businesses in each block are identified, and information as to the nature and specialty of the company is given, along with their street address, hours of operation, and, in many cases, a telephone number. All manner of businesses are shown, including dry goods stores, dentists, photographers, hotels, banks, printers, lawyers, and newspapers (including the TRIBUNE and EXAMINER). The huge Hotel Crellin has its own page, as do the YMCA, Pacific Press Publishing Company, Eagle Box Company, Oakland Iron Works, and Oakland Gas, Light, and Heat Company. A two-page index at the rear of the volume identifies and locates each business. The rest of the text provides a history of Oakland and Alameda County, with much information on the economic development of the region. This portion is supplemented by several photographs, including the Oakland skyline as seen from the tower of the Masonic Temple, boating scenes on Lake Merritt, the shipyard and port, several schools and churches, the county courthouse, the Linda Vista Winery and vineyard, and the University of California at Berkeley.         The genus Masdevallia.

      - Issued by the Marquess of Lothian, K.T., chiefly from plants in his collection of orchids at Newbattle Abbey. With additional notes by F.C. Lehmann (German Consul in the Republic of Colombia). London, R.H. Porter, 1896. Folio (44 x 32cm). pp. (228), with 1 double-page chromolithographed map, 87 (1 double-page) handcoloured lithographed plates and 61 wood-engravings in the text. Contemporary half green morocco, spine with 5 raised bands gilt ornaments and lettering. A good copy of this rare and most beautiful publication on the genus Masdevallia. "The original intention was to issue 250 copies, and it has been estimated that approx. 150 were actually issued, with just over 100 being bound" (S. Manning, Florence H. Woolward botanical artist 1854-1936, published in 'The Orchid Review' vol. 104). "Since the article you quote was written, I obtained the handwritten account book of Florence Woolward dealing with the printing and publication of 'The Genus Masdevallia'. In it, details show clearly that only 100 copies were printed" (Personal e-mail from Steve Manning). The magnificently executed plates are drawn and lithographed by the author herself. These handcoloured lithographs depict all Masdevallia-species in cultivation life-size. Excellent wood-engravings after a photograph of the perfect plant are given in the text. 'Drawings also of numerous species entirely unknown in this country, or known hitherto only as dried specimens, are generously promised by Consul F.C. Lehmann, whose exceptional advantages as a skilled botanist collecting for many years in those regions of Central and South America where alone Masdevallias are found, place him at the head of authorities upon the genus' (From the Preface). Some foxing mainly confined to the text. The nine printed wrappers of the original parts bound at the end.Nissen BBI, 2185. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Alfred Mame et Fils 1896-97, Tours - 1/980. Folio. 272, 279 loose pages (text) + 36 loose plates, as issued, with an additional suite of 333 in-text plates (Volume I, 173; Volume II, 160) not called for in the collophon. Plate volumes: Full gilt-stamped brown leather with gold lettering on spines. Raised bands. Dentelles. Moire endpapers. All edges gilt. Original decorative wrappers bound in. This stunning illustrated life of Jesus is divided into five sections (The Holy Childhood, the Ministry, Holy Week, The Passion, The Resurrection) and contains no less than 365 compositions from the four gospels. The numerous in-text illustrations are in full color, sepia, and monochrome. The text volumes are printed on grand velin paper with 36 tissue-guarded full-page hors-text plates in duplicate (color and green or sepia-tone lithographs). Leafs of color plates (first state) are stamped and each bears a facsimile of Jacques-Joseph Tissot's handwritten caption and signature. Leafs of second state plates are watermarked. Paper size 15 3/4 x 12 3/4 inches; image size varies (ca 9 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches). This suite is not noted in the collophon. Paper of engraved plates is watermarked and measures appr. 15 1/2 x 12 inches. Image size varies (ca. 4 3/4 x 3 1/2 inches). A distinguished Pre-Raphaelite artist, Tissot's inspiration for his remarkable biblical illustrations comes from his transformative religious experience in the Parisian church of Saint-Sulpice in 1885. It caused him to abandon his successful life as a painter of British and French society life to travel to Egypt, Syria, and Palestine in 1886&#150;1887, and again in 1889 where he visited all of the Holy sites. The ultimate goal of these travels was to produce a series of paintings for an illustrated biography of Jesus, and his later illustrated monumental Bible. Illustrated text volumes: Slipcases rubbed along edges and partly split. Spines of portfolios sunned. Both side flaps detached but present. Chemise of second portfolio partly damp-stained (not affecting leafs inside). Title page of second volume slightly foxed at lower margin. Moderate and sporadic foxing on a few tissue-guards. Plate volumes: Minor rubbing along edges of clamshell boxes. Text in French. Slipcases in overall fair, portfolios in good-, interior in very good, clamshell boxes in good, bindings and interior in fine condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

In 1857 he was employed by the Northern Californian, a weekly paper. In about 1860 he moved to San Francisco and began to write for the Golden Era, which published the first of his Condensed Novels, brilliant parodies of James Fenimore Cooper, Charles Dickens, Victor Hugo, and others. He edited the periodical Californian, for which he engaged Mark Twain to write weekly articles. In 1868 Harte was named editor of the Overland Monthly. For it he wrote "The Luck of Roaring Camp" and "The Outcasts of Poker Flat." Following The Luck of Roaring Camp, and Other Sketches (1870), he found himself world famous. He furthered his reputation with the poem "Plain Language from Truthful James" (1870), better known as "The Heathen Chinee."
