"Verlaine, Paul"
James Fenimore Cooper
Putnam The Knickerbocker Press, New York, 1895. The limited edition (884 of 1000 sets) of The Complete works of Cooper in 32 volumes. As typical with 19th century sets there were different bindings offered by the publisher using the same sheets. A near fine set with light rubbing to spines of some volumes. Burgundy cloth with contrasting textures-- spine is in a creped surface and the covers are matching crepe pattern separating from a flat surface by a gilt double rule line. Spine titles are gold stamped on green leather. All books numbered 884 by publisher. Unique steel engravings by F T Richards on frotispieces of each volume, heavily stamped on Japanese Vellum. Not dated but various listings and library holdings put this set from between 1893-1896. Protected with tissue titles printed in red. Top Edge Gilt, rough cut fore and bottom edges. A wonderful set that presents extremely well on the shelf-- rich colors. Naturally includes Coopers greatest achievements, The Last of the Mohicans, The Deerslayer, The Pathfinder and others. See my photos to see the colors and design. I can send additional photos of individual volumes as needed. Books are in my possession and will ship well packed in sturdy cardboard. Fyodor Dostoevsky
St. Petersburg: The publication A.F. Marks, 1895. Very Old RARE Book!!! Author: Fyodor Dostoyevsky (Фёдор Миха́йлович Достое́вский) Title: Demons (Бесы) Country: Royal Russia / Russian empire Language: Old Russian (старорусский / древнерусский) Genre: Philosophical novel, Political novel, Anti-nihilistic novel, Psychological novel, Satirical novel Place of Publication: St. Petersburg Publisher: The publication of A.F. Marks Publication date: 1895 Demons (Russian: Бесы, Bésy) is a novel by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, first published in the journal The Russian Messenger in 1871-2. It is the third of the four great novels written by Dostoyevsky after his return from Siberian exile, the others being Crime and Punishment (1866), The Idiot (1869) and The Brothers Karamazov (1880). Demons is a social and political satire, a psychological drama, and large scale tragedy. Joyce Carol Oates has described it as "Dostoevsky's most confused and violent novel, and his most satisfactorily 'tragic' work." According to Ronald Hingley, it is Dostoyevsky's "greatest onslaught on Nihilism", and "one of humanity's most impressive achievements--perhaps even its supreme achievement--in the art of prose fiction." Demons is an allegory of the potentially catastrophic consequences of the political and moral nihilism that were becoming prevalent in Russia in the 1860s. A fictional town descends into chaos as it becomes the focal point of an attempted revolution, orchestrated by master conspirator Pyotr Verkhovensky. The mysterious aristocratic figure of Nikolai Stavrogin--Verkhovensky's counterpart in the mor … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

Fortune's Favourite - Lawrence Alma-Tadema, 1895
FORTUNE'S FAVOURITE, PAMPERED HAPPINES Heliogravure uitgegeven in 1895 door de Berlin Photographic Company naar het gelijknamige schilderij van Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema. In de tijd met de hand gekleurd. Afm.: 30,5 x 44,5 cm. "A marbellous painter", had de Engelse pers hem genoemd.

LORENZ, Hendrik Antoon
E.J. Brill, Leiden, 1895. First edition, the copy of The Garden Ltd., of Lorentz's major work on the electrodynamics of moving bodies "which soon became a classic" (Schaffner, p. 503). It was in this work that he introduced the concept of 'local time', a "major discovery" (Hoffmann, p. 86), and the 'length contraction hypothesis', which together paved the way for the 'Lorentz transformations' he introduced in full in 1904. "Lorentz's great achievement [for which he won the Nobel Prize in physics in 1902] was to unite the particulate view of electricity with Maxwell's ether-borne, contiguously acting electromagnetic forces. This achievement was founded on Lorentz's novel conception of the electromagnetic ether . The ether completely permeates matter, and it is not displaced when material bodies move through it. The sole connection between ether and matter occurs through the spherical charged particles, or electrons, that are contained in ponderable molecules. The displacement of one charged particle produces a change in the state of the ether, and this change is propagated outward at the speed of light, influencing a second particle at a later time" (McCormmach, pp. 47-48). In the Versuch, "Lorentz introduced his notion of a 'local time', which he utilized to obtain a 'theorem of corresponding states.' This theorem indicates that the earth's motion through the aether will have no first-order effect whatever on experiments using terrestrial light sources" (Schaffner, p. 503), i.e., no effect if we neglect second and higher powers of v/c, where v is the speed of the body and c …

The map volumes appears to have been broken up very often and one can find individual maps on the market from time to time. ********** The Report of The Royal Commission, Highland and Islands, 1892, scheduled the deer forest land under three categories, and each category was identified by a colour scheme, thus: Category 1 - yellow, was land that was suitable for new holdings. WOLF, Hugo, Komponist (1860-1903)
Wien 18 1, 1895. 4 Seiten, kl-8, mit eigh. Kuvert. - Ausführliches Schreiben an seinen Freund und Förderer, den Richter und Komponisten Oskar Grohe in Mannheim. "Mein lieber Freund! KELMSCOTT PRESS.) MORRIS, William, & Alfred John Wyatt, translators.
Hammersmith: Kelmscott Press, 1895. Hammersmith: Kelmscott Press,, 1895. The Kelmscott Beowulf, in original limp vellum Large quarto. Original limp vellum, spine lettered in gilt, with brown silk ties. Printed on Batchelor paper in black and red in Troy and Chaucer types. Decorative woodcut title, borders, and initials. As often, rear ties gone, front ties partly gone, with three long fragments loosely inserted. Light toning and soiling to spine, minor cockling and bowing to covers, yet overall in very nice condition; contents clean and fresh. First Kelmscott edition, and the first edition of William Morris's translation, one of 300 copies printed on paper (a further eight copies were issued on vellum). Morris began his translation of the great English epic in 1893, based on a prose rendering by the Anglo-Saxon scholar Alfred J. Wyatt of Christ's College, with whom he consulted over a two year period. Beowulf had particular resonance for Morris: he called the poem "the first and the best poem of the English race", with "no author but the people" (cited in Peterson). The borders, designed by Morris, were used in only one other Kelmscott publication, The Life and Death of Jason, published six months later. Franklin p. 200; Peterson A32; Ransom p. 328; Tomkinson 32; Walsdorf & Blackell 32.

That site is at a location called in Arabic Ramat al-Khalil (the older name used by archaeologists) and currently Bir al-Haram ar-Rameh, which is a few kilometres north of the site described in this article. After the mid-12th century, the tradition of the "Oak of Mamre" has migrated to one or several places along the road from Mamre to Hebron, such as the site from this article.
