Feininger, Lyonel, Maler (1871-1956).

Tokyo. [Tokyo Toyodo]. No date. Ca. 1895. 10 double-page color lithographs, plus 8 (unpaginated) pages of text at the rear. Bound accordion style with paper-covered boards and color pictorial cover label. Boards are detached with paper loss at the corners, small area of light dampstaining at the lower left corner. Interior in very good condition. The publisher's label has been removed from the rear paste-down. The text relating to the last image in the book states that "when the war between Japan and China was at its height, playing at soldiers was all the rage with boys." This suggests a date of publication shortly after 1895, following the first Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895 and preceding the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905. There were apparently different editions of this work, with different covers and variant images. The first image in this edition is of two children, one reading, one writing. The text states that "This picture takes us back to the days when education in Japan was, for the mass of the people, a matter of private effort, the present extensive system of government schools, subordinate to an Education Department, dating only from 1871." The other images are: girls playing battledore and shuttlecock; boys flying kites; the Doll's Festival; children playing kotoro kotoro in Ueno Park; boys on bamboo stilts; boys in a procession; children playing in a stream; boys wrestling (sumo). A series of quite lovely woodblock prints. Item #48378.

Union series [US]) I believe it's the First printing in USA James Upperton stays in pension Kirkby-Malhouse in Gaster Fell in Yorkshire waiting his cottage to be built on the moor. There, he meets a beautiful French woman, Miss Eva Cameron, which warns him about the danger of living in such an isolated place. A few days later, his cottage is finished and he settles. He receives a quick visit from a neighbor nicknamed "The Surgeon of Gaster Fell" which leaves him with a dubious feeling. Then a few days later Upperton decides to visit him. Not far from his house, he sees his neighbor beating a poor old man. He decides to learn more and, without being seen, he throws an eye in the house. He sees a cage where the poor man is held prisoner. A few days later, the same old man escapes and tries to enter in Upperton's cotttage, but he is catched up by the surgeon. All these strange events are explained in a letter Upperton receives shortly after. It is written by his curious neighbor, who is none other than the brother of Eva Cameron. He explains that his old father is suffering from insanity and he tries by any means to avoid him to be interned in a psychiatric hospital. In-12° (159 x 95 mm), [3] ff. [Luke, Harry / Lukach, Harry / J.H.Lukach].
Berlin, 1895. Octavo. 1 page (folded). From the private collection / library of colonial governor, diplomat and historian, Sir Harry Luke. Friedrich Alfred Krupp (17 February 1854 - 22 November 1902) was a German steel manufacturer of the company Krupp. He was the son of Alfred Krupp and inherited the family business when his father died in 1887. Whereas his father had largely supplied iron and steel, Friedrich shifted his company's production back to arms manufacturing. Friedrich greatly expanded Krupp and acquired the Germaniawerft in 1896 which gave him control of warship manufacturing in Germany. He oversaw the development of nickel steel, U-boats, the diesel engine, and much more. He died in 1902 of apparent suicide. His daughter Bertha inherited the company. (Wikipedia)

Charles Darwin
1895. In the late 1800s, D. Appleton & Co. produced a 15 Volume Complete Works of Charles Darwin. THAT COMPLETE SET IS OFFERED HERE. Together, the volumes comprise 7250 pages, with 20 plates and maps (several of the plates are folded, some in color), 120 text-figures. This is the Appleton edition of Darwin's collected works specially bound in uniform half red morocco leather - this set was edited by Darwin's son, Francis, and published as a tribute to Charles Darwin who had died in 1882. By the 1890s, public interest in Darwin's theory of evolution and natural selection had increased so dramatically that Appleton decided to issue this specially bound set of Darwin's works. The set includes these 12 titles in 15 volumes (three titles were issued in two volume sets). Twelve of the volumes had a publication date of 1896 on the title page, 3 had the date of 1897. The 15 volumes with details are noted below. All of these titles were published during Darwin's lifetime with the exception of 'Life and Letters' (1887). Edited by Francis Darwin, this set includes reproduction of many letters exchanged between Darwin and such great naturalists as Robert FitzRoy, Thomas Huxley, Alfred Russel Wallace, and others. All are described as the "Authorized Edition", which is noted behind the title page (as the only wording) on the copyright page. They came from the same estate and are described similarly, with any specifics for each volume noted below. "Verlaine, Paul"
Putnam The Knickerbocker Press, New York, 1895. The limited edition (884 of 1000 sets) of The Complete works of Cooper in 32 volumes. As typical with 19th century sets there were different bindings offered by the publisher using the same sheets. A near fine set with light rubbing to spines of some volumes. Spine titles are gold stamped on green leather. All books numbered 884 by publisher. Unique steel engravings by F T Richards on frotispieces of each volume, heavily stamped on Japanese Vellum. Fyodor Dostoevsky
St. Petersburg: The publication A.F. Marks, 1895. Very Old RARE Book!!! Author: Fyodor Dostoyevsky (Фёдор Миха́йлович Достое́вский) Title: Demons (Бесы) Country: Royal Russia / Russian empire Language: Old Russian (старорусский / древнерусский) Genre: Philosophical novel, Political novel, Anti-nihilistic novel, Psychological novel, Satirical novel Place of Publication: St. Petersburg Publisher: The publication of A.F. Marks Publication date: 1895 Demons (Russian: Бесы, Bésy) is a novel by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, first published in the journal The Russian Messenger in 1871-2. It is the third of the four great novels written by Dostoyevsky after his return from Siberian exile, the others being Crime and Punishment (1866), The Idiot (1869) and The Brothers Karamazov (1880). Demons is a social and political satire, a psychological drama, and large scale tragedy. Joyce Carol Oates has described it as "Dostoevsky's most confused and violent novel, and his most satisfactorily 'tragic' work." According to Ronald Hingley, it is Dostoyevsky's "greatest onslaught on Nihilism", and "one of humanity's most impressive achievements--perhaps even its supreme achievement--in the art of prose fiction." Demons is an allegory of the potentially catastrophic consequences of the political and moral nihilism that were becoming prevalent in Russia in the 1860s. A fictional town descends into chaos as it becomes the focal point of an attempted revolution, orchestrated by master conspirator Pyotr Verkhovensky. The mysterious aristocratic figure of Nikolai Stavrogin--Verkhovensky's counterpart in the mor … [Click Below for Full Description]

Fortune's Favourite - Lawrence Alma-Tadema, 1895
FORTUNE'S FAVOURITE, PAMPERED HAPPINES Heliogravure uitgegeven in 1895 door de Berlin Photographic Company naar het gelijknamige schilderij van Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema. In de tijd met de hand gekleurd. Afm.: 30,5 x 44,5 cm. "A marbellous painter", had de Engelse pers hem genoemd. [Click Below for Full Description]

LORENZ, Hendrik Antoon
E.J. Brill, Leiden, 1895. First edition, the copy of The Garden Ltd., of Lorentz's major work on the electrodynamics of moving bodies "which soon became a classic" (Schaffner, p. 503). It was in this work that he introduced the concept of 'local time', a "major discovery" (Hoffmann, p. 86), and the 'length contraction hypothesis', which together paved the way for the 'Lorentz transformations' he introduced in full in 1904. "Lorentz's great achievement [for which he won the Nobel Prize in physics in 1902] was to unite the particulate view of electricity with Maxwell's ether-borne, contiguously acting electromagnetic forces. This achievement was founded on Lorentz's novel conception of the electromagnetic ether . The ether completely permeates matter, and it is not displaced when material bodies move through it. The sole connection between ether and matter occurs through the spherical charged particles, or electrons, that are contained in ponderable molecules. The displacement of one charged particle produces a change in the state of the ether, and this change is propagated outward at the speed of light, influencing a second particle at a later time" (McCormmach, pp. 47-48). In the Versuch, "Lorentz introduced his notion of a 'local time', which he utilized to obtain a 'theorem of corresponding states.' This theorem indicates that the earth's motion through the aether will have no first-order effect whatever on experiments using terrestrial light sources" (Schaffner, p. 503), i.e., no effect if we neglect second and higher powers of v/c, where v is the speed of the body and c … [Click Below for Full Description]
