[Netolitzky, Fritz, Richard, and Magdalena]
Wien: Carl Gerold's Sohn, [1895 or 1896]. Small quarto (25.5 × 19.7 cm). Publisher's quarter cloth; pictorial boards; 16 leaves of chromolithograph illustrations by Magdalena Netolitzky accompanying printed text. Wrappers and cloth spine somewhat worn; internally very good. First edition of this rare parody of the iconic nineteenth-century German children's book, notwithstanding the humorous imprint: 999. Auflage (999th Edition). The manuscript was created in 1894 by the three Netolitzky siblings from Vienna, as a gift for a family friend. As Baumgartner notes, it is based on the idea of an "Ur-Struwwelpeter" who lived 3000 years earlier in ancient Egypt and written on papyrus, conveyed by an optical effect used on each of the chromolithographed illustrations. The terrifying moral tales of the original book are here translated into the Egyptian context, so that misbehaved children get submerged into the Red Sea by Osiris or come tumbling down the pyramids. The edition was quickly removed from bookstores, due to a successful plagiarism lawsuit filed by the original publisher of the German ur-text, Rutten and Loening, although Gerold's Sohn attempted to reverse the court's decision. A translation was published in London in 1896, which did not face this problem and is thus more frequently seen in the trade, whereas the German edition is very uncommon. Fritz Netolitzky (1875-1945) was a German botanist and entomologist who went on to make numerous scientific contributions and held many professorial posts. WOMEN'S HISTORY & LITERATURE - SUFFRAGE] STANTON, Elizabeth
New York: December 8th, [1895?]. Brief but significant missive addressed to Parker Pillsbury, the American minister and women's suffrage advocate, regarding a copy of Stanton's "Woman's Bible" she had just sent him. "I wonder if I could interest them [a "Mrs. White" and one other] sufficiently in the Woman's Bible to sell ten or twenty copies in there [sic] respective woman's clubs? It is published at my expense, hence I am trying to push its circulation." The controversial "Woman's Bible," a series of commentaries pertaining to the portions of the Bible relating to women, was published in two parts, in 1895 and 1898, and composed almost entirely by Stanton alone, her committee of Bible revisors finding the project too controversial and harmful to the cause of women's suffrage. Clearly at the time of writing this letter the book was still meeting with resistance (thus our placing the date at around 1895), Stanton turning to Pillsbury as a potential source of influential and wealthy patrons (she inquires "Is Mrs. White still living & working? Is that rich woman that Mr. [illegible] used to visit in Maine living?"). But by 1897 the book had become a best seller, though many of the members of the women's suffrage movement would continue to distance themselves from it. This letter quite significant as a testimony to the aging Stanton, organizer of the historical 1848 Seneca Falls Convention, and her continuing indefatigable efforts, and initial lack of support, in getting this work circulated.
Kipling, Rudyard
London: Macmillan, 1895. First editions. Fine. Original publisher's cloth bindings with gilt to spines and boards. All edges brightly gilt. Dark green endpapers. A Fine set, with just the slightest bit of foxing at the preliminaries, otherwise both copies bright and clean. With a rare pink advertising slip in the second volume for Macmillan and Co.'s Christmas Books from 1895. Based on folk tales and legends that Kipling learned during his childhood in India but written while in Vermont. This work of several inter-related short stories met with huge success upon publication and continues to enthrall readers of all ages to this day. According to Professor Edwin L. Miller, their publication "caused even severe critics of [Kipling's] previous work to admit that he is a writer of inspired genius." Largely focused on man's relationship to nature, The Jungle Books in part narrate the tales of Mowgli, a human (man-cub) raised by wolves, as he tries to find his proper place in the world. As he struggles with his own identity, he finds allies and adversaries among the animal communities through which he travels. They also include the story of Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, the heroic mongoose who would later inspire an animated short voiced by Orson Welles. For contributions like these, Kipling became the first English-language writer, and the youngest ever, to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature. Fine.[Attributes: First Edition]

H.G. Wells - The Time Machine - First Edition New York: Henry Holt, 1895. First edition, first issue of the author's first novel. Precedes the English edition by several months and with textual differences. Currey's first printing and (A) state binding with author's name misprinted "H.S. Wells" on the title-page (and in the "Author's Note" following title). Later issues were bound in red or maroon cloth with Wells' name corrected. Spotting and darkening to cloth with rubbing near ends of slightly leaning spine. Tissue-guard intact. Spine lettering still visible. A very sharp copy of this extremely rare Wells title. In a custom half morocco clamshell case. "The Time Machine might be considered the first work of modern science-fiction, and it is still the classic statement of an important subgenre. A remarkable work, and necessary reading" (Bleiler, Science-Fiction 2325). Currey, p.524. Please see the other first editions I have listed. [Attributes: First Edition]

POE, Edgar Allan (1809-1849)
London: Published by J. Shiells and Co., 1895. [Strange Tales]. FINELY BOUND. Eight volumes. Octavo (18 x 12cm). With 24 fine photogravure plates. Contemporary dark red half calf with two maroon title labels, gilt raised bands and gilt to spines. Marbled boards and end papers; top edges gilt, others untrimmed. Light wear to spines and fore-edges, some chipping and gouging to spines; more so to volume I. A little foxing to edges. Very good. A seminal figure in the development of science fiction and the detective story, Poe exerted a great influence on Dostoyevsky, Conan Doyle, Verne, and Baudelaire. This collection of Poe's best stories contains all the terrifying and bewildering tales that characterise his work, as well as the Gothic horror of 'The Pit and the Pendulum' with other similarly weird tales, together with all three of the landmark cases featuring his ground-breaking detective Auguste Dupin. Indeed, the history of the detective story begins with the publication of 'The Murders In the Rue Morgue' (Matthews). He was a writer of genius who was interested in crime, especially violent deaths, cryptograms, and the whole process of logical deduction (Quayle). Poe's mystery of 'The Purloined Letter' is also a prototype of spy stories like those of James Bond. (Haining). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

SMITH, Laura Grover
The Evening Wisconsin Co.), (Milwaukee, 1895. First edition. Tall octavo. Blue cloth. Illustrated from photographs. Top of the title page is trimmed, probably to remove an owner's name, and affecting no printing, else near fine. The book, which consists mostly of portraits of American Bishops, has been used by a former owner as an autograph album, affixing the signatures of all but one of the pictured bishops, mostly with signatures cut from letters, as well as with the signatures of other bishops not pictured. Contains over 70 Signatures including Samuel D. Ferguson, the first African-American member of The House of Bishops, Missionary Bishop to Cape Palmas in Liberia, the first Liberian Episcopal Bishop, and the founder of the Cuttington Collegiate and Divinity School there; successive Presiding Bishops of the Episcopal Church of America, John Williams and Thomas March Clark; Henry Benjamin Whipple, who worked tirelessly for Native Americans; and the signature (but not portrait) of the first African-American Episcopal Bishop, James T. Holly, Bishop of Haiti. A nice collection of autographs. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

BERLIN, Irving). WALKER, J.
George Routledge and Sons, London, 1895. Revised and enlarged edition. Octavo. 720pp. Red cloth. Gilt lettering dulled but readable, modest wear to the spine ends, a tight, very good copy. Irving Berlin's copy with his bookplate on the front pastedown. Housed in a custom quarter leather and marbled papercovered clamshell case. Accompanied by 20 slips of paper, originally laid into the book, with holograph notes by Berlin. Of these, seven contain working manuscript notes for a rhyming song. The transitory and fragmentary nature of the notes are obviously inconclusive, but it appears this song is unpublished. Also in the book is a letter to Mrs. Berlin from a Las Vegas correspondent, and some other material. Further provenance on request. A chance to remake musical history: in an interview in his 90s (he lived to be 101), Berlin claimed never to use a rhyming dictionary (Davis, *The Craft of Lyric Writing*, p. 212). A fascinating artifact, a compositional tool from one of the greatest songwriters of all time, and, among them, one of the few to write his own lyrics as well as music. Berlin wrote approximately 1500 songs during his long career, many of them recognizable American standards such as "Alexander's Ragtime Band" (his first hit, in 1911), "Puttin' on the Ritz," "God Bless America," "Easter Parade," and "White Christmas." In addition he wrote the scores for 19 Broadway shows and 18 Hollywood films. By virtue of the endurance of his individual compositions, his lasting influence on other musicians, and the sheer length and breadth of his career, Berlin occupies a singul … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

[Otto von Bismarck]
1895. Full leather folder. Near fine.. Quarto. Single sheet of white vellum folded, with calligraphy in colors and liquid gold on the first and third pages, the others blank. Text in German. Loosely bound in tooled brown pigskin covering wooden boards, metal corner bosses, moire silk doublures. Just a touch of rubbing to the folder extremities, faint mostly marginal foxing to leaf. Sumptuous salute to Prussian statesman on his 80th birthday, five years after he resigned as chancellor of Germany, and three years before his death. This large congratulatory document was one of 450,000 letters and cards sent to Bismarck to celebrate his birthday, an event which cemented his legendary status in German history for his role in the founding of the Reich: One of the most significant manifestations of the gradual change in public perceptions of the Iron Chancellor were the celebrations in honor of Bismarcks 80th birthday in 1895. The 80th birthday celebration, which this document commemorates, cemented Bismarcks changing role in historical perceptions of his leadership.

Picture Posters by Charles Hiatt. Published by George Bell, London in 1895. Hardcover, 6 1/8 x 8 7/8 inches. Condition: Minor wear to cover and spine; pages excellent. "In the present volume an attempt has been made briefly to trace the history of the picture poster from the earliest times, and to comment upon and reproduce some of the most noteworthy examples in various countries. The English and American placards have received special attention, while the best examples of the French school have not been overlooked. . . . The whole subject is treated from the point of view rather of art than of commerce." So begins the preface of Hiatt's 368-page overview of worldwide poster production, packed to the brim with wonderful contemporary opinions and appraisals of the global poster scene-not to mention one-hundred-fifty-one black-and-white illustrations-his textual analysis beginning in ancient Egypt and ending with the following axiom: ""Art is generally supposed to be inimical to art, yet here we have the two combining to the advantage of both, and succeeding in making the beautiful an incident of the necessary.". BEATTIE, John Watt.
[Album with 32 photographs of Tasmania].Hobart, [ca. 1895]. Oblong folio (30 x 41cm). With 32 original photographs (ca. 17 x 23 cm), pasted on paperboard. Later gold-tooled red morocco. Beautifully bound album with a magnificent collection of 32 original photographs of Tasmania, made by John Watt Beattie (1859-1930) at the end of the 19th century. Beattie arrived in Tasmania in 1879 as an amateur dry-plate photographer of scenic views. He began to work with the Anson Brothers in 1882. In 1892, Beattie bought out the Anson Brothers' very large collection of large format studio portraits and negatives. The photographs include 10 views of Hobart and surroundings (including a view from the bay, a photograph of an original sketch by an eye-witness: "The first days of Hobart, Collins Camp, Sullivan's Cove, Feb. 1804", Elizabeth Street, Cathedral, Bellerive), Mount Wellington with hunter, Mount Ida, Lake St. Clair (3), Mount Byron & Cuvier, giant eucalyptus giant, cedar trees on way to Great Lake, Mount King William, from track to Arrowsmith, Track to Fern Tree Bower, forest views, Mount Olympus from Laura Creek, King Williams Pines, Lake Marion, Garrs Tree Hill track, Hartz Mountains, etc. Very good collection. CAMUS, Edmond Gustave.
Orchidées de France.[Paris], 1895. Imperial 4to (32×26.5 cm). With a calligraphed title-page, 52 finely drawn watercolours on 51 leaves of orchid varieties, finished with arabic gum, and 1 leaf with mounted photographic portrait of the author. Burgundy half morocco. Beautiful work with 52 watercolour drawings of the orchids of France. The orchids are drawn on smaller sheets, measuring ca. 24.5×15.5 cm, that have been pasted onto larger leaves.Camus wrote the name of the variety and that of the botanist who first described this particular orchid in block letters underneath the drawing. Drawings XXIV and XXXVII have been signed by him, "E.G. Camus," the others are unsigned. Because of the small sheets on which the orchids have been drawn, 16 varieties have been depicted in a lower and an upper half. Edmond Gustave Camus (1852-1915), a pharmacist and botanist, was fascinated by the intricate taxonomy of the genus of the orchid. He lived close to l'Isle-Adam, the habitat of numerous orchids, and set out to collect the different varieties. The present 52 watercolour drawings are not listed in any of the bibliographies, not even in the bibliography of the publications by E.G. Camus, prepared by Henri Lecomte and Camus's daughter Aimée Antoinette in E.G. Camus, Iconographie des Orchidées d'Europe (Paris 1921-1929). These drawings testify to Camus's outstanding craftmanship both as a botanist and artist and to his love for orchids. Their charm cannot fail to captivate anyone who browses through the atlas. The splendid drawings are in excellent condition. Cf. McINTOSH, Burr William and F. Richard Anderson
McIntosh Publishing Co, New York. Broadside or poster advertising the 1895 book. 12½" x 18". Illustrated by F. Richard Anderson. Printed in black with a whimsical football illustration on pale green paper. Very good with small chips at the extremities affecting no printing, and a small piece of tape on the reverse (to no purpose). The illustration depicts a man in a fleur-de-lys uniform with a leather nose guard, opposed in the distance by some rather goofy looking football players (some with "Y," "H," "C," and "P" - presumably for Yale, Harvard, Columbia, and Princeton or Penn). Anderson was a successful Broadway costume designer, which probably explains the *très sportif* uniform. A poster advertising a very early football book, following Walter Camp's *American Football* (considered the first book on the sport) by four years. Rare. *OCLC* locates one copy of the 36-page book at the University Club in New York City, and no copies of this poster.

Clerc, Lieutenant L.
Nancy: N.p., 1895. Folio (49 cm). Original color illustrated title page + [3]ff, 3-150, 147-150bis, 151-228pp + [14]ff + eight plates [six plates with mounted original watercolors of 18 regimental flags; one small flag removed]. With 52 original expertly composed and executed pen-and-ink watercolors by Henri Thiriet, including the folio title page plus vignettes and half-page illustrations. Also with 21 photographic reproductions from books and artwork mounted throughout [e.g., reproductions from old books or prints]. Written in black and red, with calligraphic section pages. A very good, bright copy. A fine original illustrated manuscript for a history that was later published by the Nancy-based Librarie Militaire Berger-Levrault in its "Historiques de Régiments" series. Clerc's history primarily covers the Regiment's campaigns and actions during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars periods (1788-1815), especially in Southern Europe, Napoleon's Campaign in Egypt, the defense of Corfu, campaigns in Portugal and Spain, in Russia [e.g., Battle of Friedland, 1807]... then later during the Second French Empire, with action at Sebastopol, the Franco-Prussian War, and the suppression of the Paris Commune (1871). From 1872 to this writing [1895], the Regiment had been garrisoned [it was later to see much action in World War I]. But more significant than Clerc's recounting of the various campaigns [and his history of the regiment's uniforms and its numerous flags] is that this unique volume comprises perhaps the earliest known work by the French painter and po … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

HINDEMITH, PAUL
HINDEMITH, PAUL. (1895-1963). German composer and one of the outstanding figures in 20th-century music theory and composition. AMusQS. ("Paul Hindemith"). 1p. 8vo. Maehrisch-Ostrau, November, 1931. A three-measure quotation from the solo viola's entrance in the first movement of his Konzertmusik for Viola and Large Chamber Orchestra, Op. 48 inscribed in German "in friendly remembrance."Hindemith performed frequently as a violist and violinist, but by the mid-1920s he was well-known in the Frankfurt music scene for his compositional skills, well on his way to becoming the leading composer-performer of his generation. Rejecting Arnold Schoenberg's 12-tone system, Hindemith created his own harmonic theory, which employed the principles of traditional tonality. His masterworks include Kammermusik, Symphonic Metamorphoses on a Theme by Weber, Sinfonia Serena, and Die Harmonie der Welt. Composed in 1930, Hindemith's Konzertmusik, dedicated to French composer Darius Milhaud and his wife, was performed on November 6, 1931 in the Czech city of Ostrau, the occasion on which he penned our quotation.Called "the foremost German composer of his generation," Hindemith promoted his musical theories through various academic posts as well as his compositions, (The New Grove Dictionary). After the Nazis banned his opera Mathis der Maler in the early 1930s, Hindemith left his post as professor of composition at the Berlin Academy of Music and taught at several other European universities. Politics and financial difficulties eventually led him to Yale where he taught from 1940 to 1953.Neatly pe … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

Sheet size: 390 x 274 mm. (ca. 13 5/16 x 10 3/4 inches). Sight (as matted): 262 x 213 mm. (10 1/2 x 8 3/8 inches). Provenance: The artist; to Charles Prendergast, 1924; to Mrs. Charles Prendergast, 1948; gift of Mrs. Charles Prendergast to Peter A. Wick, 1960; by descent to the present owner, 1978.Exhibitions: Davis & Long Company: The Monotypes of Maurice Prendergast: A Loan Exhibition (New York, April 1979), no. 29. "Picnic in the Park" is the second pull of the monotype "Spring in Franklin Park," one of the important group of Prendergast monotypes now in the collection of the Terra Museum of American Art. In her discussion of the latter, Cecily Langdale observes that "Picnic in the Park" shares with "Spring in Franklin Park" an exceptional color scheme. "'Picnic in Franklin Park' is notably strong in color (as, indeed, is even the second pull from the same plate); in it, the vivid greens of the grass and trees are accented by the brownish black trunks and pink blossoms of those trees, and by the black, brown, and white dresses and hats of the little girls. In this monotype, Prendergast has relied to an unusual degree upon the 'back of the brush' technique; most of the figures are outlined and much of the foliage delineated in that manner" (Langdale, 1979). Comparatively few of Prendergast's monotypes are dated, as is this one. When it was shown in New York in 1979, Langdale noted that of the 107 … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

KEYNOTE. MACHEN, Arthur Llewellyn Jones.
John Lane. (Keynotes series, no. 19) 1895. FIRST EDITION. Half title, title designed by Aubrey Beardsley in red & black, 14pp reviews, 16pp cata. (1895). Uncut in orig. dark navy cloth, blocked in white, spine lettered in gilt; spine sl. faded, sl. rubbed, otherwise a nice crisp copy. This is Machen's second work to appear in John Lane's Keynotes series. Three Impostors, which is heavily influenced by Robert Louis Stevenson, is a novel written as a collection of stories with interwoven plots and characters. The narrator, Mr. Dyson, is a connoisseur of Fitzrovia, Soho and Bloomsbury, Machen's own stomping grounds. The three impostors of the title are men involved in a secret society, searching through London for a missing Roman coin from the period of Emperor Tiberius commemorating an infamous orgy. The book was published in the year of Wilde's trial and 'as a prime instance of literary decadence was overwhelmed by the moral backlash'. (Sutherland) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

VARIOUS, [DOYLE, Arthur Conan; VERNE, Jules; MORRISON, Arthur, et al.]
London: George Newnes, January 1891 to December 1895. [Literary Magazine] FIRST APPEARANCES. 10 volumes. Large octavo (24 x 18 x 43cm). Illustrated throughout. Original magazine parts bound in half-yearly volumes. Recent tan half calf with raised bands, gilt titles to spines and marbled boards. All edges speckled brown. Occasional spotting; very good. Contains the first appearance of the above mentioned Sherlock Holmes stories, plus 'The Adventure of the Cardboard Box' (volume V, 1893) which was not published in book form until 'His Last Bow' (1917). Several of these Holmes stories feature far more illustrations (notably by Sidney Paget) than in book form, and in some (such as 'Cardboard Box ') the illustrations are exclusive to 'The Strand'. Doyle also contributes the historical caper 'The Exploits and Adventures of Brigadier Gerard' (volumes VIII, IX and X). In addition, the set includes science fiction from Jules Verne; 'Dr Trifulgas' (volume IV, 1893), and 'An Express of the Future' (volume X, 1895). Volumes VII-VIII feature the entire first series of cases for the consulting detective Martin Hewitt; probably the chief rival of Sherlock Holmes- indeed Morrison's ingenious crime stories were commissioned by 'The Strand' entirely due to an appetite for Doyle imitations. A superb literary magazine set. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
