        Good Night

      One of 50 hand coloured copies, signed and numbered by the artist, Louis B Davis. (1860-1941) Davis was an English water- colourist, book illustrator and stained glass artist. Active in the Arts and Crafts movement, Nikolaus Pevsner credited him to be the last of the pre-Raphaelites. A member of the Art Worker's Guild and Society of Painters, he knew William Morris, Edward Burne-Jones and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. The book is a collection of children's poems accompanied by romantic hand- coloured illustrations. A very good copy in publisher's illustrated paper covered boards, cloth spine. A little rubbed at the extremities and some light foxing to the end papers, but otherwise clean and bright throughout. The book was originally designed to be held together with green ribbons, now detached but inserted loosely. No copy held at the British Library. A delightful rarity from the Fin de siecle.

Contents include Clement Clark Moore's "A Visit from St. Nicholas," "Before Christmas" by Glenn Holley, "The Tale of a Christmas Stocking" by Frank J. Bonnelle, and four other Christmas-themed rhymes. In the publisher's die-cut chromolithographed stiff wrappers featuring a full-length portrait of St. Nicholas himself, snow-covered Christmas tree in hand, standing next to a donkey bearing baskets full of snow-covered toys. This large format shaped book is the least common of the McLoughlin editions featuring Moore's enduring Christmas poem. Apart from a very shallow crease at St. Nicholas's head and a tidy ink inscription on the inside front cover, this is a fine, bright copy of a rare survivor.

Sidi Ali Reis was an Ottoman admiral sent by Suleiman the Magnificent to counter Portuguese piracy and attacks on Muslim pilgrim ships in the Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea, Red Sea and Arabian Gulf. He was shipwrecked in India and travelled to the Muslim states of South Asia, Afghanistan, central Asia, Iran, and the Middle East before returning to the Ottoman Empire. His travels are recounted in his present "Mirat ül-Memalik" ("The Mirror of Countries"), first published in 1557, one of the earliest travel books of Turkish literature and written in the now extinct Chagatai language. On November 19, Zola writes to his wife: "I see that your day on Saturday was well spent: a visit at the curiosities merchants, lunch with the Luzzattos, a visit in the Coliseum, dinner at the Embassy. And how you pressed yourself to get double the benefit! You speak of leaving Rome Tuesday evening, that is, today. You will thus not have received the letter in which I advised you to stay until the Consistory. You have to return in the end, if you have had enough. Only, I am a bit embarrassed about my letters, as you didn t send me the dispatch I asked you to send three days before you leave Rome. I'll take the chance and continue to write you at the Grand Hotel, from where my letters will no doubt be forwarded to you. Today I did up my first small packages and sent the first two chapters of Rome to the translators. Caponi will have these two chapters in his hands this evening, with the authorization to begin in La Tribuna of December 23. I haven't seen Caponi again; the seven hundred francs are embarrassing to him. I have negotiated everywhere for Rome except with Spain and America. Spain will come, but I doubt very much that America will this time. That will make a hole. All the same, I am counting on the translations bringing in thirty to forty thousand francs, which is a reasonable figure. After my lunch, Jules having told me the masons had finished their work in the old pit, I went down to see. That will make a superb cellar, much bigger than our old wine cellar. It will be cooler than the one we re using now; and you could store wine there. But I think it ought rather to be made into a coal cellar. One could easily store thirty or forty thousand kilogrammes there if there were a real reason for buying coal en gros, in great quantity. You will see. I took the liberty of opening a letter addressed in your name and stamped with a stamp of Lagesse; and I was right, for it contained simply a receipt for two hundred francs that he no doubt owed you. Giacomelli has lost his wife. I am sending him your card and mine, with a word of sympathy. The day was quite cold and foggy. This is decidedly villainous weather. As soon as you are back, we will really move into our winter quarters. I forgot to say regarding the new cellar that the work on everything having to do with the other rooms is going to begin shortly. The architect of the house had a long meeting with the architect of no. 23, for it seems that there are very complicated questions about the wall in between. Happily, we didn t take it inside. The following day, on the 20th, Zola writes: "This morning I received your letter in which you fixed your return for Monday. If thus you keep this date and if you don t stay in Rome until the Consistory, this letter is the last you will be able to receive in Rome, as it will arrive Friday morning and you should be leaving on Friday evening, according to the data you gave me. Thus, I am embarrassed as to an address for the letter I ll write you this evening and which will depart tomorrow. I m going to await your letter of tomorrow, and I ll make my decision if you have stuck to yours. In this case, this letter would be the last which I would send you to Rome, and I would address the one this evening to Turin, general delivery. By the way, I think Monday is an excellent date for your return".

Einmal weil ich hier für Montag zur Umsturzvorlage noch viel Arbeit habe, dann weil ich in Rücksicht auf meine Betheiligung an den Debatten über die Umsturzvorlage meine Lunge schonen muß. Schreiben Sie mir also wo die Versammlung ist, ich muß mit Bummelzug fahren und käme Abend 7 Uhr 34 in Apolda bez. 7 Uhr 54 in Weimar an. Die Versammlung bitte ich also erst um halb neun Uhr anzuberaumen u. für ein großes Glas Zuckerwasser zu besorgen [.]". - Bebel war einer der Begründer der deutschen Sozialdemokratie und einer der bedeutendsten Parlamentarier in der Zeit des Deutschen Kaiserreichs. Die sog. Umsturzvorlage war eine am 5. Dezember 1894 in den Deutschen Reichstag eingebrachte Gesetzesvorlage des Reichskanzlers Fürst Chlodwig zu Hohenlohe- Schillingsfürst, die nach ihrer Begründung den gefährlichen, auf den gewaltsamen Umsturz der bestehenden Verfassung und Gesellschaftsordnung des Deutschen Reiches zielenden Bestrebungen entgegentreten sollte. Die hinter diesen Bestrebungen stehenden Kräfte waren nach Meinung der Verfasser der Umsturzvorlage insbesondere die Sozialdemokraten. Am 11. Mai 1895 wurde die Umsturzvorlage in Zweiter Lesung zurückgewiesen. - Etw. fleckig und mit Knickfalten sowie kleiner Eckfehlstelle; mit gepr. Vignette "Deutscher Reichstag".

As usual, this bears the fictitious publisher's address of Hassan Auvès in Cairo (at left), and also the true imprint of Camille Burckardt's successors, who took over the company in 1889. - Slight repaired tear to left edge; slight browning. All of these prints are very rare; a different print commanded £21,250 at Sotheby's in 2012.

Einzige Ausgabe. - Der französische Archäologe, Ingenieur, Geologe und Prähistoriker Jacques Jean Marie de Morgan (1857-1924) leitete wissenschaftliche Gesandtschaften im Kaukasus (1886-89) und in Persien (1889-91), bevor er Generaldirektor des "Service des Antiquités de l'Egypte" wurde. Er unternahm die ersten systematischen Ausgrabungen in Dahschur, einer Nekropole etwa 26 Kilometer südlich von Kairo am Westufer des Nils. Hier entdeckte er die noch ungeplünderten Gräber der Prinzessinnen Mereret und Chnumit, deren außergewöhnliche Schmuckausstattungen heute im Ägyptisches Museum von Kairo zu besichtigen sind. Außerdem grub er an den drei Pyramiden des Mittleren Reiches und an den Beamtennekropolen. - Rücken mit kl. Stoßspur, sonst sauber und kaum fleckig.

All but vol. I with protective brown plastic "cover" over spine with cut outs for labels. They peel off easily. Elbert Hubbard described himself well as "a businessman with a literary attachment." . One of the highest paid lecturers in the United States (he received $2,500 a week on a vaudeville circuit), he was the author of six novels . His most famous publication, however, is "The Philistine: A Periodical of Protest (1895-1915), a bibelot with a monthly circulation exceeding 100,000. Begun as a satirical attack on the editors who had rejected his submissions (including William Dean Howells and Edward Bok), his 'fadazine' was profitable from the beginning . Both flaunting and regretting his 'outsider' status, this Midwesterner's acerbic observations, over two decades, regarding the Establishment and the leading figures and publications of his time are valuablet to a history of this period ." -Bruce A. WhiteThe author, Elbert Hubbard, was an popular and influential writer, publisher, lecturer, artist, and transcendentalist philosopher at the turn of the 20th century. He helped establish Roycroft, an Arts and Crafts movement community in New York state in 1895. Roycroft had their own press, and since no major publications would print Mr. Hubbard's stories, he decided to "protest" and print them himself.For over 20 years, the satirical magazine called The Philistine was printed "Every Little While". It was bound in brown butcher paper because, Mr. Hubbard said, "There is meat inside." The stories are delightful, and the typography is beautiful. There are also several pages of advertisements that are entertaining, though most of them are included in a single signature that were folded but not trimmed. Maybe it was bound that way purposefully but I can't see most of the ads unless I dismantle the book, and I won't dare do that.Mr. Hubbard's life sure was interesting, but so was his death. At one of his lectures, he was speaking about the Titanic, and spefically commended Mrs. Isador Straus who refused to board a lifeboat because it would mean leaving her husband behind. Mr. Hubbard stated, ". to pass out as did Mr. and Mrs. Isador Straus is glorious. Few have such a privilege. Happy lovers, both. In life they were never separated and in death they are not divided."As fate would have it, Mr. Hubbard and his wife Alice were aboard the Lusitania when it was torpedoed by the German submarine Unterseeboot 20. They, too, refused to abandon each other. Instead they went to the top deck with the other passengers, linked arms, calmly walked into a room and closed the door. A witness wrote, "It was apparent that his idea was that they should die together, and not risk being parted on going into the water." - Lauren DiRusso. First edition. - The autobiography of Usamah ibn Murshid ibn Munqidh (1095-1188), who introduced this genre of writing to Arabic literature (cf. GAL I, 319). Born in Shaizar in northern Syria, where his family ruled a small Emirate, he was banished by his uncle and for a time entered the services of Atabeg Sihabaddin ibn Buri, where he got to know members of the Knights Templar. After spending several years in seclusion as a hunter in Egypt, he returned to Damaskus in 1154, joining the campaign against the European crusaders. The editor H. Derenbourg was the first to discover the sole surviving manuscript of the "Kitab al-I'tibar" (in the Escorial in Madrid) and produced this first translation, afterwards the first Arabic edition (1886) and a biography of Usamah (1889). - A few repaired paper defects; well-preserved altogether.         "Tavolette di Biccherna" By Icilio Federico Joni - Republic of Siena & Revolution and Freedom

      Siena, Tuscany, circa 1895. An original exquisite and pictorially symbolic Biccherna styled "tavolette" (wood book cover), coloured with tempera and mineral paint, hand crafted by famous Italian Sienese painter Icilio Federico Joni, who is especially remembered for his masterful reproductions of the medieval Biccherna covers. Slightly re-purposed for the early nineteenth century, the boards are bound portfolio style with a leather spine for paper manuscripts as opposed to vellum, and further feature integral document pocket to each board, and an elegant floral patterned mint green satin lining. Also with a separate satin covered folder loosely placed within, bearing a metallic monogram 'MRS' fixed to upper corner, and containing four uninscribed double leafs. Volume measures 30,5 x 22 x 2,5 cm. The Archives of the State of Siena holds a collection of original wood covers from the thirteenth to seventeenth centuries, currently displayed in the Palazzo Piccolomini, Museo delle Tavolette di Biccherna [Museum of Biccherna Tablets]. Having entered some of the most important book collections worldwide, including those of Borghese, Hoe and Wilmerding, Joni's nineteenth century tavolettes are in their own right exemplary works of high art, and are classified as some of the most valuable book covers today. In the late nineteenth century, Icilio Federico Joni (1866-1946) so skillfully reproduced Siena's original 'Tavolette della biccherna' that one could not easily differentiate between his work and earlier original. To perfect his craft, Joni studied written accounts of the medieval covers before meticulously creating his own. A highly celebrated self-professed forger, in 1932 he published an autobiography to describe his work, titled, "Le memorie di un pittore di quadri antichi" [Memoirs of a Painter of Antique Pictures]. In 1936 an English edition appeared, titled "The Affairs of a Painter." Joni essentially created an exclusive revival of the Tavolette di Biccherna, and produced an exceptionally symbolic motif with this example. Rendering a theme of prosperity, political grandeur, nobility and the artistry of the Middle Ages, he captured the essence of his city's ancestral legacy, while also memorializing the pivotal revolution of 1355. On the front board is a painting of "Pax", the Roman goddess of peace, sitting on her throne and holding an olive branch. One of three shields underneath the scene, albeit chipped, appears to read "LIBERTAS" (Freedom), which is reminiscent of the deposition of the Noveschi mercantile-banking oligarchy, and the foundation of a democratic government and civilian council, and is consistent with the theme depicted on the rear board. [Pax is Latin for Peace. In Roman mythology Pax was the goddess of peace, equivalent of the Greek goddess Eirene. Pax was first worshipped during the rule of Augustus. She had a magnificent temple (sanctuary) on the Campus Martius which was built by the emperor Vespasian and called the Ara Pacis, and another temple on the Forum Pacis. Pax was depicted in art with olive branches, a cornucopia and a scepter. A festival in her honor was held on January 3rd. The daughter of Jupiter and Justice, Peace was often associated with spring.] The manuscript text to the rear cover is in the medieval Siena dialect and commemorates the insurrection of 1355 which overthrew the Government of the Nine. Drawing from thirteenth and fourteenth century covers, this one reads: "Justa[?], e L'Entrata, e L'Escita, de la General, Gabella del Magnifico Comuno di Signa AD 1355" (Orders[?] & Income & Expenses of the General Gabella of the Magnificent City of Siena, 1355 AD). Also interesting to note, the text mentions the Gabella. Whilst commonly known that the Biccherna made painted wood covers in which to preserve the city's official ledgers, the artist may have been drawing attention to the lesser known fact that the custom was also practiced by the other financial judiciary of Siena - the Executors of the Gabella. [Ministeri del Tesoro e della Finanza Biccherna e Gabella: Ministries of the Treasury and Finance Biccherna and Gabella: The Gabella was responsible for collecting and managing gabelles, a form of taxation. The Biccherna was responsible for the administration of public revenues.] In keeping with custom, five coats of arms are depicted, three of which are illustrated with dragons, possibly representative of specific nobles from the district "Contrada del Drago" [Dragon] who served a term in the ministry of finance. Traditionally, the painted wood covers made in the Middle Ages for the financial accounts of the two Sinese magistracies Biccherna and Gabella, were inscribed in manuscript to date and denote its contents. Every six months a term ended, each of the Provveditori and Esecutori being replaced, and new registers begun. It was at this time that the boards of the retiring official would be painted, often bearing his family's arms and those of his colleagues, some allegory, or a notable event from his term, political or otherwise, depending on the era. These traditions are beautifully manifested in Joni's work. The Republic of Siena was a state originating from the city of Siena in Tuscany, in central Italy. It existed for over four hundred years, from the late 11th century until the year 1555. In 1286 the Nova government was established to rule Siena. The Nova was backed by the Noveschi, a political party formed by the noble families that sat on the council. Eventually, the Noveschi Party grew to include not only include members of the Nova council, but many prominent noble families of the city. Under the guide of the Nova and the Noveschi, Siena grew in both economic and militaristic dominance, enjoying a relatively trouble-free period of wealth and urban development. It also saw a surge in the arts during the rule of the "Government of the Nine" (1287-1355). Siena was one of the earliest and most important banking centers of Europe and Italy. While every city had an office for recording revenue and expenses, Siena was unique in that its officials gave special attention not only to the documents, but also to the books in which they were kept, in particular the covers. Beginning in 1257, wood covers were made to protect vellum manuscripts, the earliest being illustrated with scenes of important financial overseers (provvedditori) or men who were privy to the secrets of the clergy (cameralingo), the coats of arms of these men, and sometimes depicting secrets known only to select officials. Allegorical, religious, and mythological scenes soon became popular, and by the mid-fifteenth century, covers were reflecting current events such as a monarch's coronation, natural disasters, grand celebrations. Although leather was used even earlier in bookbinding and eventually was the material of choice, wood was chosen for its weight, most often for the keeping of vellum manuscripts, in order to prevent the parchment from buckling. They were most often fastened with clasps and adorned with ivory or metal work. The tavolette (wood covers) of the Biccherna and Gabella were painted by a prominent artist. Alas, the Black Death Plague of 1348 decimated three fifths of the population. Some ill-fated financial enterprises and political turmoil also made room for a revolution. Subsequently, in 1355, with the arrival of Charles IV of Luxembourg in the city, the population rose and suppressed the government of the Nova council and expelled any family associated with the Noveschi Party. They established the Governo dei Dodici (Government of Twelve) being a government of twelve representatives of the people, assisted by a council of twelve nobles with a popular majority. This was to be short-lived, however, being replaced by the Quindici (Fifteen) reformers in 1385, the Dieci (Ten, 1386-1387), Undici (Eleven, 1388-1398) and Twelve Priors (1398-1399) who, in the end, relinquished the city's seigniory to Gian Galeazzo Visconti of Milan in order to defend it from the Florentine expansionism.

Ce premier livre avait en tête un poème d'Anatole France dédié à Charles Maurras, les deux écrivains s'étant liés d'amitié depuis une dizaine d'années. Cette édition originale, en plus d'être rarissime, est la seule à contenir certains passages qui ont été enlevés dans la seconde édition, publiée de 1922. Maurras ayant évolué depuis la parution de cet ouvrage, il en a enlevé les passages qui n'allaient plus avec la pensée qu'il avait développée. Très bel état, 2 petites déchirures à la couverture (un petit manque), quelques rousseurs. Très bon texte littéraire et non politique.

And I send you the most affectionate of presses of the hand". - Won over to social humanitarianism toward the latter part of his life, Zola wrote the cycle, "Les Trois Villes", which no longer reflected a naturalistic perspective. When Zola wrote this letter, he had already published "Lourdes", the first novel in the trilogy and was still working on its sequel, "Rome", which would later be followed by "Paris". He had, the year before, visited the Italian capital to research for the novel, and had returned to Paris with voluminous notes about what he saw and heard. Madame Zola, who had accompanied him on this excursion to Italy, took more pleasure in the trip than he did. She found it easier here than in France to bask in his reflected glory, and she could imagine that Roman society was ignorant of the double life he was leading, whereas she was sure that all her friends in Paris knew. After this first visit she returned regularly on her own for several years running; it was an arrangement that allowed the estranged couple a semi-separation acceptable according to the conventions of the time.

      1895. 1 page, oblong 8vo, framed and glazed with a portrait of the composer (overall size: c.430:325 mm). Fine autograph musical quotation of the "Polacca" from act 3 of the opera "Christmas Eve", comprising the opening four bars notated in piano score in dark brown ink on four staves, inscribed ("Allegro non troppo alla polacca ... Polski from 'The Night before Christmas'") to the young composer and critic Evgeny Ottovich Gunst. - Rimsky-Korsakov's "Christmas Eve" was premiered at the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg on 10 November 1895. The plot centres on Vakula the Smith, who can only marry his beloved Oksana, she says, if he brings her the slippers of the tsaritsa (ie Catherine the Great). In Tableau 7 (Act 3), Vakula arrives at Catherine's court and finds a group of cossacks singing her praises in this "Polacca". Rimsky included this movement in his Orchestral Suite derived from the opera, as number 3. The eighteen-year-old dedicatee, Evgeny Gunst (1877-1950), later wrote a book about Rimsky-Korsakov and Wagner; his own musical legacy as a composer was only discovered in 2009. - Some browning, probably from the mount.

      London: H.S. Nichols, 1895. Limited large-paper English edition of the elder Alexandre Dumas's true crime narratives, number 15 of 25 copies, printed on Japanese vellum with the photogravure illustrations in two states. First published in French in 1839 and 1840, the collection includes essays on the Borgias, Martin Guerre, Mary Stuart, and Beatrice Cenci, as well as modern criminals such as the poisoner Antoine Derues and the assassin Karl Ludwig Sand. Most notable is the historical account of the Man in the Iron Mask, a real prisoner of the Sun King whose plight would inspire the final chapter of Dumas's d'Artagnan romances: "The imagination is fired at the thought of that enforced dumbness, of that lifetime of reflections which the features did not betray, of that isolation for forty years confined within double walls of stone and iron." A fine deluxe set, splendidly bound. Eight octavo volumes, contemporary full plum crushed morocco gilt, boards ruled in gilt, raised bands, spine compartments elaborately tooled in gilt with a fleur-de-lis motif, top edges gilt, other edges uncut. Title pages in red and black, text printed on vellum, all volumes illustrated with photogravures in two states throughout text.
