The Jungle Book & The Second Jungle Book

London: Macmillan, 1895. First editions. about Fine. A lovely, just about Fine set of Kipling's most beloved work. Both books are very clean and bright, with just minor pushing to the spine ends, slight cocking and matching bookplates to the front paste-downs. The small flaws notwithstanding, an extremely pleasing set. Housed in a custom cloth case with each book in a separate chemise. Case fairly worn. Based on folk tales and legends that Kipling learned during his childhood in India and written while in Vermont. This work of several inter-related short stories met with huge success upon publication and continues to enthrall readers of all ages to this day. According to Professor Edwin L. Miller, their publication "caused even severe critics of his previous work to admit that he is a writer of inspired genius." Kipling was the first English-language writer, and the youngest ever, to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature. about Fine.

Autograph Letter Signed, 2pp on one 8vo sheet, on first and fourth pages, Atlanta, GA, 1 September, n.y.(ca 1895)

Autograph Letter Signed, 2pp on one 8vo sheet, on first and fourth pages, Atlanta, GA, 1 September, n.y. (ca. 1895). Joel Chandler Harris writes a condolence letter to his editor, Francis (Frank) Jackson Garrison ((848-1916, son of Abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison) on the death of Henry Oscar Houghton who died on August 25, 1895. Houghton (1823-1895) was an American printer and publisher, proprietor of the Riverside Press and partner in the publishing firms of Hurd and Houghton; Houghton, Osgood & Company; and Houghton, Mifflin & Company. Houghton Mifflin published many of Joel Chandler Harris' works. To Mr. Garrison. "I was very much shocked to hear of the death of Mr. Houghton. I met him but once - he was kind enough to come to my house but I saw that he was a man to be lived on closer acquaintance. I sincerely trust that his death will make no change in the firm that has dealt so kindly and so generously with me. McClure is not after "Aaron" at all. What he wants is the nine new "Thimblefinger" stories that I sent you this summer to patch out "Mr. Rabbit at Home." Now you can use your own judgement [sic] and pleasure about that. I didn't think he can work them off before you are ready to issue the book. Nine weeks would carry the matter to the first of November, and my understanding is that you will get out Mr. Rabbit about the first of November. If you are willing for McClure to use the nine stories my terms are $20 a thousand words, payable weekly. But don't consider me in the matter at all. Consult our own desires. At the head of this paper you will see what use I made of Herford's cute monogram. Yours faithfully, Joel Chandler Harris." In his last sentence, he refers to the rabbit at the head of this stationery which is composed of the initials of Chandler's three-part name. The monogram was designed by Oliver Herford, the British-born, American humorist writer, artist and illustrator who illustrated all of Harris' children's books referred to in this letter. Harris refers to a number of his children's books, including The Story of Aaron which he was hoping would be published in November of 1895 and was, indeed published that month. He also discusses MClure wanting "the nine new Thimblefinger stories…." He is referring to S. S McClure, founder of McClure's Magazine, an American illustrated monthly founded in 1893 by McClure and John Sanborn Phillips. The magazine was known for social reform as well as for publishing serialized novels by the leading writers of the day, including Joel Chandler Harris. In 1893 the magazine had published "The Comedy of War.

        Jude the Obscure

London: James R. Osgood, McIlvaine & Co.,, [1895]. With an Etching by H. Macbeth-Raeburn and a Map of Wessex. Octavo. Original vertical-ribbed green cloth, gilt-lettered spine, gilt roundel of Hardy's monogram within a floral wreath on front cover, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Etched frontispiece (with captioned tissue guard) by H. Macbeth-Raeburn, map at the end. Mid-20th-century bookseller's receipt (George's of Bristol) laid in. Spine gently rolled and a touch creased, extremities lightly bumped, a few very faint marks to covers, the rear with a couple of light scores, contents toned, front inner hinge superficially cracked, a small numbers of signatures faintly dog-eared, a few trivial marks to margins, short closed tear to bottom edge of sig. K3, the text unaffected. A very good copy. First edition in book form, first state, with all 17 pages noted by Purdy retaining their pagination: uncommon thus. Hardy's last novel originally appeared as a bowdlerised serial in Harper's Magazine from December 1894 to November 1895, when the European and American editions were published simultaneously in London and New York, and post-dated 1896. "The records of neither printer nor publisher have survived in the case of Jude, but from Osgood, McIlvaine's advertisement ? (Saturday Review, 15 February 1896), it is apparent that there was more than one impression of the novel. It is difficult to say if these are distinguishable. Signature A?H do exist in two distinct states, however?with page numbers on partially blank pages and (conforming to usage throughout the remainder of the volume) without these. These 8 signatures are often found mixed (first and second state) ? [but] all are first statein the first state in Hardy's own copy, 5 presentation copies inscribed by him in November 1895, and in the British Musuem, Bodleian, and Cambridge copies ? Signatures A-H in the first state may possibly be an indication, therefore, of the first impression" (Purdy).

John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1895 - 1895 Wisden Rebound Like Hardbacks , Special.

1895. This is a very special 1895 Wisden, rebound by Wisden in the middle of the 20th Century to mimic an 1896 hardback, a quirky Wisden that will appeal to some. The similarities to a hardback are that the paste downs are yellow (with a Liverpool cricket club stamp) , the gilt on the covers and spine are identical to that of an 1896. It is slightly smaller by 1/8th inch , smoky top to page block and severe foxing around photo plate, the uniqueness is what will appeal. Hard to price up but Gorringes sold a similar copy (spine less like an 1896) for ?750+20% and selling for less than we purchased it for.

New York and London: Macmillan, 1895. First Edition. Very good antiquarian condition. Oversize quarto. vi, [2], 32 pp. With 10 photogravure plates depicting 40 varying stages of Cell and Embryonic Development, plus 20 figures and diagrams in the text. Original blue buckram, gilt (front cover bumped at top of spine). A tight and attractive copy. First and only edition of E.B. Wilson's ground-breaking work, justly celebrated on account of its astonishingly early synthesis of Cytogenetics, the study of inheritance in relation to the structure and function of chromosomes. This volume holds important original insights into cytology and early cell biochemistry, elegantly presented for both general and scholarly audiences. Additionally it offers for the first time ACTUAL EXAMPLES OF CELLULAR DEVELOPMENT BY MEANS OF MICROSCOPIC PHOTOGRAPHY, here described as "photomicrographs." These photographs of the cell were created in collaboration with Edward Leaming of Columbia University. Incredibly, the "Atlas of the Fertilization" appeared five years before the 1900 rediscovery of Mendel's forgotten "Studies in Plant Hybridization" (1865). It also anticipated -- by four nearly decades -- the focus on the DNA structure of genes. The "Atlas" is a deceptively simple, yet profound synthesis; here Wilson presented the conceptual framework for future discussions of the physical and chemical basis of inheritance. "In an astounding, prophetic conclusion, Wilson states: 'These facts justify the conclusion that the nuclei of the two germ-cells are in morphological sense precisely equivalent, and that they lend strong support to Hertwig's identification of the nucleus as the bearer of hereditary qualities. The precise equivalence of the chromosomes contributed by the two sexes is a physical correlative of the fact that the two sexes play, on the whole, equal parts in hereditary transmission, and it seems to show that the chromosomal substance, the chromatin, is to be regarded as the physical basis of inheritance. Now, chromatin is known to be closely similar to, if not identical with, a substance known as nuclein (C29 H49 N9 P3 022 according to Miescher), which analysis shows to be a tolerably definite chemical composed of nucleic acid (a complex organic acid rich in phosphorus) and albumin. And thus we reach the remarkable conclusion that inheritance may, perhaps, be effected by the physical transmission of a particular chemical compound from parent to offspring'" (cited by Bruce Wallace, "The Search for the Gene," 1992, p. 32). Edmund Beecher Wilson (1856-1939) was "among the most important and prolific biologists in the last part of the nineteenth and first part of the twentieth centuries" (Garland Allen). His most famous contribution to scholarship was "The Cell in Inheritance and Development" (1896 et seq.) which summarized and critically evaluated the enormous amount of research done on the cell in the 19th- and early 20th-centuries. Wilson spent most of his career at Columbia University where he was successively adjunct professor of biology (1891-94), professor of invertebrate zoology (1894-97), and professor of zoology beginning in 1897. Wilson is credited as America's first cell biologist. LITERATURE: The contemporary review of "The Atlas" in The American Naturalist (Vol. 29, No. 348. [Dec., 1895], pp. 1075-1076) praises the work, and comments on Wilson's excellent reputation. Yet this review did not appreciate this remarkable synthesis in cell biology -- it failed to comment on Wilson's formulation of the physical and chemical basis of inheritance. See also Jane Maienschein, "From Presentation to Representation in E.B. Wilson's 'The Cell'" in: Biology and Philosophy Vol. 6 [1991], pp. 227-254. PROVENANCE: Faint ink stamp of the "Cambridge Medical School Library" on title-page.

        The Adventures of Oliver Twist

Chapman and Hall, Lon 1895 - Limited edition. VG/G condition. Limited to 500 copies for England and America. With 26 watercolor drawings by Cruikshank and 506 pages of text. The previous owner purchased this book in 1974, the original catalog description is laid in. "Original printed boards, quarter brown morocco gilt, edges untrimmed, head and tail of spine very slightly rubbed, otherwise a fine copy in a lightly torn dustwrapper." The spine ends and corners are rubbed and bumped, with a little loss to the spine heel. That is the main difference now, the gilt is bright, the contents are in great shape, and overall the book is a nice copy well protected by the dust wrapper. The jacket is actually two layers thick. The normal paper jacket found on modern editions, is here fixed onto a mesh paper backing, which is stronger that the paper itself. The jacket in that respect is almost complete, and sits well on the book. However the paper itself is lacking about 25% including almost all of the spine. The rear panel has some loss and the front panel is almost complete. Anyway a nice book, likely very seldom found in it's jacket, in any condition. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
