WITH 61 ILLUSTRATIONS BY PAUL AVRIL, comprised of 20 IN THREE STATES: plain, India-proof, and colored, and one in single state, all with tissue guards. Spine faintly sunned, otherwise A FINE COPY, as fresh and bright as one could hope for. Featuring gallant drawings by the very popular illustrator Avril (1849-1928), this luxuriously produced and extravagantly bound novel involves regicide to restore the honor of a queen in ancient Greece. According to Ray, Paul Avril "was a witty and ingenious artist," and a prolific one, as well. His greatest work is considered to be the illustrations he did for the first edition in French of "De Figuris Veneris" (a manual of classical erotology) from the original Latin and Greek edition of 1824 by Friedrich Karl Forberg. A celebrated illustrator of the period, Édouard-Henri (later changed to Paul) Avril studied art in various Paris salons, including the École des Beaux Arts from 1874-78. Théophile Gautier (1811-72) was one of the most popular writers of his time and a famous champion of art for art's sake.

Col. photogravure after Woodville; 17th Lancers charging across plain toward artillery at left, mountains in background.The Charge of the Light Brigade was a charge of British light cavalry led by Lord Cardigan against Russian forces during the Battle of Balaclava on 25 October 1854 in the Crimean War in Woodville's painting 'Relief of the Light Brigade', the visualized the moment the 11th Hussars reached the Russian guns, however, in this print, Woodville shows the 17th Light Dragons (Lancers) at the beginning of the Charge. The central figure is the painting is Private James William Wightman, who was severely wounded and taken prisoner in the Charge. Prior to the charge, the Light Brigade possessed a mounted strength of 673 men. This was reduced to 195 after the battle, with 247 killed and wounded and the loss of 475 horses.

      - "Although closely linked to the Second Viennese School (Schoenberg was his pupil), Zemlinsky was no outright revolutionary. While undisputedly a conductor of the first rank and an interpreter of integrity, he lacked ‘star quality’ and was overshadowed by more domineering personalities. His music is distinguished by an almost overpowering emotional intensity. It took several decades before it became known and began to be appreciated. In 1895–6 Zemlinsky conducted an amateur orchestra, the Polyhymnia, in which Schoenberg played the cello. Their friendship, initially an informal teacher-pupil relationship, became close: Schoenberg composed his D major Quartet under Zemlinsky's supervision, and his op.1 lieder are dedicated in gratitude to his ‘teacher and friend’." Excellent contemporary brown three-quarter morocco by the Knickerbocker Bindery (stamp-signed on recto of rear free endpaper), raised bands, spines gilt in double-ruled compartments, gilt titling, marbled sides and endpapers, top edges gilt, other edges untrimmed and MOSTLY UNOPENED. With 13 plates (mostly portraits), as called for. Spines just slightly but uniformly sunned, but A VERY FINE SET, especially clean, bright, and fresh inside and out. This appealing set contains seven volumes of Whittier's poems, essays, and criticism and the two-volume "Life and Letters" by Samuel Pickard. A Quaker who edited a number of newspapers and spent time as a Massachusetts legislator, John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-92) invested as much passion in his abolitionist campaigning as he did in his poetry. In Day's words, "Whittier won his place in New England literary circles by his genuine poetic talent and his felicity in detailing the homey aspects of New England life. Along with Thoreau, he favored life in the country, and celebrated his rural environment in much of his poetry. . . . The topical poetry that established his fame has lost much of its pertinency, but the wholesome simplicity and convincing vitality of his rural lyrics still attract 20th century readers. . . . For an America ravaged by civil war and, especially in New England, changing from an agricultural to an industrial society," his classic long poem "Snowbound" (1866) is "the definitive picture of a lost world." Samuel Thomas Pickard (1828-1915) wrote and edited a number of works on Whittier, of which the present item was the most popular, going through at least 13 editions. Pickard, a newspaper editor from Maine, married Whittier's niece, and thus had the advantage as a biographer of knowing his subject quite well. He also served as Whittier's literary executor. The earliest draft of THE TIME MACHINE was serialized in THE SCIENCE SCHOOLS JOURNAL in 1888 as "The Chronic Argonauts." After two subsequent drafts (which are lost), Wells rewrote the story as a series of loosely connected articles for THE NATIONAL OBSERVER. Seven of these appeared between March and June 1894, but the series was discontinued when W. E. Henley gave up the editorship of the magazine. Henley took over the editorship of THE NEW REVIEW and arranged for a much revised version of the novel to be serialized there: it appeared in five installments from January to May 1895. At the end of May THE TIME MACHINE was published as a book by Henry Holt in New York and William Heinemann in London. The text of the Heinemann edition is largely, though not entirely, the same as that serialized in THE NEW REVIEW, while the text of Holt edition (which preceded the Heinemann edition) contains a number of significant variations from both THE NEW REVIEW and Heinemann versions. To "Jack", promising to celebrate his birthday that evening, making "all the noise the captain will allow", describing him as a naturalist and explaining that the enclosed poem ('Invocation') is for those interested in the fauna of Australia, as he is, and therefore sending "privately & confidentially" a copy of his "great work" as it stands, mentioning that he has not yet worked in the moa, emu or dodo ("but I am after them"). 'COME, KANGAROO, THE GOOD & TRUE/FORESHORTENED AS TO LEGS/AND BODY TAPERED LIKE A CHURN': The poem was first published in The Mercury in Australia on 2 November 1895. Clemens himself printed it in Following the Equator: A Journey Around the World, 1897, and explained that an English naturalist [presumably the addressee 'Jack'] on board had told him much about the animals of Australia and their origins, particularly the platypus and kangaroo. The Mercury reported that at a lecture Clemens had stated: 'I have a poem. I have written a poem only once in 30 years. I have now written one of four stanzas.I always have an inspiration to write a poem -- once every 30 years.First I thought of Sydney Harbour.Then I thought of the fauna of Australia.I made a list of them and began.I can say now that the most difficult thing in the world to do is to write poetry when you don't know how.'

      Cedar Rapids: T. S. Metcalf, Printer and Binder, 1895. - Later printing. 12mo. Originally printed in Kansas in 1875. Pictorial stapled wrappers, 50 pp., preface, one illustration. A true narrative of the author's experiences on the plains in 1874 and 1875 while a buffalo hunter ranging from the Pan Handle of Texas through Oklahoma and Kansas with much centering on Dodge City. He provides accounts of his experiences with Indians, his narrow escape from death during a severe winter storm, in which all his comrades died and he alone escaped. Due to the storm, he lost nearly all of his fingers and portions of his feet. Because of the severity of his injuries he relied on selling this booklet for the support of himself and his family. Howes V42 says "An episode in the life of a buffalo hunter; includes an account of the Adobe Walls Fight." Old water stain to the front and rear covers, but not affecting the text, lower edge of spine reinforced with cellophane tape, and light wear to the extremities. Text block is in very good condition. A Fine copy of the book with the spine very slightly toned and a pea-sized rub mark on the coated front end-paper where it looks like an early price was erased. Despite these two very minor flaws, this is a bright, sharp, unread copy of the book and about as fine as one could hope to find it in the absence of the very scarce dust jacket. First printing with yellow top-stain, undamaged type on p. 225 and no mention of this title in four pages of ads at the rear. BAL 4071. The author's realistic portrayal of a young soldier's shame after fleeing a civil war battle. It was selected as one of Merle Johnson's "High Spots of American Literature." The author's second book after "Maggie" and easily his best work. Included in "Men at War: The Best War Stories of All Time" by Ernest Hemingway, who wrote that this novel "is one of the finest books of our literature, and I include it entire because it is all as much of a piece as a great poem is."         "The Chinese Must Go". Scribner's Magazine promotional poster for the October 1895 issue

      New York:: Scribners,. 1895.. Very good condition. Bold color poster for an 1895 issue of Scribner's Magazine, depicting the atmosphere of anti-Chinese sentiment in California which prevailed in the 1870s. The October issue of Scribner's included Andrews' 'A History Of The Last Quarter-Century In The United States', as well as "Home Agitations And Foreign Problems", which the poster makes reference to by employing an illustration of the primary target of discrimination, the Chinese. The poster, printed in red, black and gold, portrays a Chinese immigrant standing on the shore, a red dragon circling behind him, holding a black umbrella over his shoulder and a small tool box in his hand. In the distance a masted ship rides the waves at the horizon. The phrase "the Chinese Must Go" was the rallying cry and slogan of Denis Kearney, the most virulent anti-Chinese voice in San Francisco of the 1870s. The Workingmen's Party of California, of which Kearney became president, maintained an anti-Chinese focus and slogans. Kearney also worked for a new state constitution, which was approved by the voters in 1879; its final provisions were very anti-Chinese. The Chinese were deemed harmful to the welfare of California, and the legislature was directed to restrict immigration and settlement. The Chinese could not be employed by corporations or the government and were denied the right to vote. Localities were granted the authority to expel or segregate the Chinese. The effective termination of importation of Chinese workers occurred with the passage of the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882. Marks at corners where the poster was pinned to a wall, with slight loss at lower right only affecting the bottom of the letter 'S' in Scribner's. With one horizontal fold. 12 x 17 1/2". Jaffa and Jerusalem: Howard's Hotel, [1895].Chevalier Alexander Howard, otherwise known as Iskander Awad, was a local proprietor of two hotels in Jaffa and Jerusalem. He became famous for successfully suing the Baedeker company in the High Court in London for making disparaging remarks about his hotel in Jaffa. Baedekers were ordered to remove the remarks in a judgement which is reprinted at the back of the guide. They not only removed the remarks in the next edition, they in fact deleted all references to both his hotels in their guides.This in the end greatly affected Howard's business and he suffered financial hardship. It is interesting to note in the rear of this guide Howard has included several pages of glowing testimonials for all his hotels. A fine copy of this rare early guide book to Jerusalem.

      G. De Malherbe, Paris 1895 - Folio size. Contemporary three-quarter vellum-style boards with handmade marbled paper boards, morocco label on spine as well as gilt designs on spine. TWO STATES OF THE ILLUSTRATIONS: 24 chromotypographed plates, two for each month in succession. The first being before type with month only printed, and the second after type, designed for the 1896 calendar of the Parisian department store La Belle Jardiniere. With original gray wrappers (on thick paper) for the "Imprimever Edition," by Malherbe, Paris bound front and rear. Sheets measure 17x241 mm; 12 1/2x9 1/2 inches, images are roughly 209x159mm; 8 1/4x6 1/4 inches (plates before letters are printed on the sheets, those with text cut and mounted to sheets). In the early 1890s Grasset began experimenting with a new form of printing called chromotypography, an early form of photolithography invented by his friend, Firmin Gillot. This calendar was printed in "Gillotage," a version of chromotypography where the plates are engraved on wood and printed on vellum. Covers slightly discolored with one small square at bottom left marked from a stamp, spine gilt rubbed, scattered marginal foxing. Overall very good and plates fine. A very nice set, extremely rare thus, with the calendar plates. [Attributes: First Edition]

En 1867, il fut embauché à L'Univers, journal ultramontain et volontiers polémique dirigé par Louis Veuillot. Il subit également l'influence du philosophe catholique Ernest Hello. Buet fit un bref séjour à La Réunion, où il collabora au journal catholique local La Malle et, accusé par des périodiques concurrents d'histoires de mœurs, fut à l'origine d'émeutes qui eurent lieu à la fin novembre 1868, à la suite desquelles il dut quitter l'île. Il publia un ouvrage de souvenirs sur ce séjour (Trois mois à l’île Bourbon, Journal d’un étudiant), ainsi que deux livres sur Madagascar, où il n'était jamais allé. Il voyagea également en Égypte où il rencontra sa future femme, également savoyarde et sœur des explorateurs Ambroise et Jules Poncet. À partir de 1869, il publia de nombreux romans à prétentions morales, des romans historiques, des contes, et fit jouer en 1881 une pièce de théâtre, Le Prêtre, au théâtre de la Porte-Saint-Martin. Profondément catholiques et conservateurs, ses ouvrages sont aujourd'hui souvent oubliés. À Paris, il fréquentait le café Banier, célèbre café littéraire installé alors rue des Saints-Pères et il tenait un salon littéraire avenue de Breteuil (VIIe arrondissement) où il recevait beaucoup d'écrivains catholiques, volontiers polémistes, qui exerçaient sur lui une influence sensible dans ses articles. S'y réunissaient Jules Barbey d'Aurevilly, Léon Bloy (avec qui il se fâcha en 1892 à propos de la tombe de Barbey d'Aurevilly), François Coppée, Joris-Karl Huysmans, Jean Lorrain, Laurent Tailhade, Jean Moréas, l'occultiste Stanislas de Guaïta, la cantatrice sur le retour Roselia Rousseil, mais aussi toute une bohème que ses inclinations politiques portaient davantage vers l'anarchisme, comme Félix Fénéon, Paul et Victor Margueritte ou Oscar Méténier. Sarah Bernhardt y était reçue et Gustave Guiches y a "fait ses classes" d'apprentissage de la vie parisienne. Huysmans, qui a pris Buet comme modèle de M. HANDSOME SCARLET CRUSHED MOROCCO BY ZAEHNSDORF (stamp-signed on front turn-in), covers with gilt triple fillet border, raised bands, spines gilt in double-ruled compartments with anthemion centerpiece in gilt and inlaid black morocco, gilt titling, richly gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. With a folding map of Captain Bonneville's travels, and 28 plates printed on Japon, as called for, all with captioned tissue guards. Text framed in gold. Wagner & Camp 67. Small faintly darkened area at top of front cover of volume II, otherwise AN ESPECIALLY BEAUTIFUL SET IN EXTRAORDINARILY FINE CONDITION, the bindings remarkably lustrous and entirely unworn, and the text and plates pristine. This is an excellent edition, in immaculate condition, of Irving's account of the explorations of Captain Benjamin Bonneville in the American West, offered here in an elegant binding. The French-born Bonneville (1796-1878) obtained a leave of absence from the U. S. Army in 1832 to explore the American West, and he set out from Fort Osage, Missouri, to follow the Oregon Trail. His real purpose, unknown to the Army, was to establish himself in the fur trade, but this objective was frustrated when the powerful Hudson Bay Company refused to do business with him. His party made it to Fort Vancouver in what is now Washington state before turning back eastward. Bonneville did spend considerable time among the Shoshone and Nez Perce tribes, and kept a journal detailing his experiences on the trail. When he returned to New York, he met the writer Washington Irving in the office of his backer, John Jacob Astor, and turned this journal over to the American author. According to ANB, Bonneville's "fame rests largely on the skillful pen" of Irving. "The romantic style Irving employed in 'The Adventures of Captain Bonneville' saved Bonneville from almost certain obscurity and (along with Irving's 'A Tour of the Prairies' and 'Astoria') greatly influenced popular fictional and nonfictional depictions of the fur trade." ANB further observes: "Fundamentally factual, these books, especially 'Bonneville,' romanticize the wilderness, highlighting heroic enterprise, for instance, and adding local color in the form of trappers' stories and Indian lore. All three of the western books were widely read." Irving (1783-1859) was the first American to earn a comfortable living as a writer, and he helped to establish literature as a profession, rather than an avocation, in the new nation. The present edition is attractively printed on luxurious paper and enhanced with illustrations of Western landscapes and life among the Indian tribes.

Corners of the backing board cut away just slightly affecting a couple of corners but not substantially affecting the image, two faintly visible short cracks in the margins, extending into the image a little, overall very good.Shown are eleven players in two rows either standing or kneeling in front of a backdrop of patterned wallpaper. Dressed in jerseys and padded pants, with one player holding the ball, all players are identified in pencil on the verso with their positions: Brady, Walter Lamar, Alex Yargee, John Phillips, John Meagher, Wm. Merrill, W.B. Wilson, Alex Foreland, Ernest McDaniel, Charlie Moore, and Willie McCombs. The Indian Journal of April 12, 1894 mentions Yargee had "...spent Saturday and Sunday in Eufaula in company with Prof. Brown." The Dawes Final Rolls listing tribal members in 1902 in which the names of Yargee, Phillips, Maegher, and Merrill appear.The Indian University was founded in 1880 by Almon C. Bacone in Tahlequah, Indian Territory. According to the Encyclopedia of Oklahoma History and Culture, the school was chartered by the Muscogee-Creek Nation for the purpose of providing a Christian education for American Indians. By 1885, it had been expanded and relocated to Muscogee. Between 1883 and 1895 it graduated 43 students with either bachelor's or master's degrees. It also featured a football team, and played the first Indian Territory football game against Henry Kendall College (later renamed the University of Tulsa). A photograph of the Kendell team exists with the team photographed against the same wallpaper background. It isn't such a large leap to speculate that the portraits were taken at the same time, and mostly likely in commemoration of that first contest. Rare. .

        A Series of Albumen Photographs Recording an Ascent and Survey of Mount Rainier in August, 1895 with a Large Party, Believed to be First Pictures taken from the Summit

      [Tacoma, Washington: E.A. Lynn Photographic Studio]. 1895. Twenty-three albumen photos each measuring 6.5" x 4.75", each mounted on slightly larger thick card stock, all with captions in ink at lower fore-edge, notations in pencil on verso, each in numbered order, several identifying the subjects on verso in ink, photo with two small brass riveted holes in the upper foredge and bound together with brass chain, all edges gilt. Modest occasional scuffing and minor rubbing, else a near fine set.In August of 1895, Walter Marsh Bosworth, Ellison A. Lynn, Fred Cowden, Howard Fries, William Love, and Fred Evans climbed Mount Rainier, and were trapped in blizzard conditions. However they managed to survive the storm, trapped at the Camp of the Clouds at 12,000 feet. Bosworth's Survey was reported later to the Secretary of the Interior, and Hartman was instrumental in pushing for the formation of Mt. Rainier National Park.This collection of albumen photographs taken by Lynn records the ascent of Mount Rainier in August, 1895. Bosworth and Evans had spent the month of August exploring and mapping the south side of Mount Rainier. They had organized an ascent to the summit with Lynn, Fries, Cowden, and Love, with Lynn intent on being the first person to bring back photographs from the summit of Mt. Rainier.The party arranged to travel with Peter Hartman, Harry Copeland, and their families to Paradise Valley, Longmire Springs, and then Camp Alta Vista before the ascent party continued on to the summit of the mountain. The captioned images include the mouth of Paradise Glacier; the Hartmans and Copelands in camp and hunting at Camp Alta Vista (7000 feet); Love crossing a crevasse with an alpine pick ax; Love and Fries rounding Gibraltar Rock at 12,000 feet; a view of Liberty Cap on the North side of Mount Rainier; as well as an excellent photo showing Bosworth, Fries, Love, Cowden, and Lynn leaving for the ascent (with an additional ink notation indicating that Bosworth, Lynn, and Cowden succeeded in making the summit).The three photos taken from the top of the crater show Mount St. Helens and Mount Adams; another of the Columbia Crest from the North side; and Mount Adams from the West side of the crater. Of particular interest are the excellent photos of the head of the Nisqually Glacier, the descent down to its mouth, the mouth of the glacier itself, and one of Fries hanging above a crevasse on Nisqually Glacier.The expedition received some notoriety because of their homing pigeon reports received August 5, 1895 that they were nearly frozen at 12,000 feet from a blowing gale, and that Love and Fries were unable to continue the climb, and Bosworth, Cowden, and Lynn would attempt the ascent of the summit. The homing pigeons were delayed by a day due to fires and smoke in the forest below. Bosworth was a noted civil engineer and surveyor who had surveyed and filed plat maps in much of Pierce, Thurston, and Whatcom counties from 1889 to 1893. After his survey and explorations of Mt. Rainier in 1895, he became the Chief Engineer of the Tacoma Interurban Railway. He eventually returned to private practice, and worked as a surveyor until 1924 when he became the Tacoma City Engineer. Hartman was a well-known and well-connected Seattle attorney who was a very influential voice in pushing for the creation of Mount Rainier National Park. He described in his 1935 address to the Washington Good Roads Association how during the 1895 trek with Copeland, their families, Bosworth, and the others to Mount Rainier, they had witnessed vandals purposely setting forest fires which were destroying the majestic trees. He determined then that he would devote his energies to ensuring that he would work towards establishing a National Park to protect the natural beauty of the area. Using the Bosworth and Evans survey, as well as other data, he worked with Washington Congressman James Hamilton Lewis to push a bill through the U.S. Congress. His law firm worked on establishing the boundaries, and specifically drew them to exclude certain sections which were being mined by the Longmire families, or others. Hartman was responsible for assuring the support of the influential Republican Congressman Joseph Cannon, Chairman of the Appropriations Committee - with whom he had a personal relationship. If Cannon allowed the bill to be passed and eventually signed by McKinley, he would not ask for additional funds from Congress to maintain the park until Cannon left office. The bill passed both houses and was signed by McKinley in March, 1899. Hartman also served as the President of the Board of Regents for the University of Washington from 1904-1909, and was instrumental in organizing the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition in 1909.Copeland was a noted architect who was supervising the construction of the State Capitol Building in Olympia. After the project stalled he returned to New York and worked on several buildings there, but did finally return to Washington State in 1912 to supervise the construction of the capitol for Wilder and White. He also designed buildings for Governor Lister, and later the Walla Walla County Courthouse. Lynn Photographic Studios was the successor to I.G. Davidson Studios, for which Lynn had become the manager in 1892, and then established later as his own. He continued to operate for the next three decades in Tacoma as a portrait studio photographer, and even opened a branch in Seattle. In 1910, he became the vice president of the Photographers Association of the Pacific Northwest, Washington. See: San Francisco Chronicle, August 5, 1895; "John P.
