The New Man: Twenty-Nine Years a Slave. Twenty-Nine Years a Free Man

York, Pennsylvania: P. Anstadt & Sons, 1895. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good. 8vo. Complete with all 176 pages and frontispiece. See Work p. 311. Sound original binding with intact hinges. Clean pages. Lightly toned endpapers. Owner's info inside front cover. Minor wear to cover. Exceptionally well-written escaped slave autobiography. "Henry Clay Bruce, brother of the first black U.S. Senator Blanche K. Bruce, a Republican, was born into slavery in Virginia to parents owned by Lemuel Bruce. He spent the first years of his life in Virginia before he and his family were sold to Jack Perkinson in 1844, and were taken to Chariton County, Missouri. There Mr. Bruce was rented out as a laborer and also learned to read. Before and after his new master moved him back to Virginia in 1847, he worked at a variety of positions as a rented slave laborer, including tobacconist, rail splitter, and eventually farm hand supervisor. In 1864, Henry Bruce encountered some trouble due to his literacy. The master of Henry's fiancée opposed the couple's marriage because he was concerned that Henry's ability to read and write might spoil his slaves. Henry and his wife risked a great deal when they successfully escaped their masters and fled to Kansas that year. Once in Kansas, Bruce found work as a bricklayer, and several years later the couple bought a house. Mr. Bruce would remain in Kansas for many years, owning several businesses, running unsuccessfully for public office, and serving a term as an elected doorkeeper for the state senate. In 1881, Henry's brother Blanche secured him a job at the post office and he and his family moved to Washington, D.C., where he would spend the remainder of his life." from blackpast.org. Scarce, as of 2016, there are two examples (one recased) in the trade, no auction records at ABPC or Rare Book Hub, and only microform editions held by instituions per OCLC.

        Mothu et Doria. Scènes impressionistes.

1895 1895 - Poster for the sketches tiled "Mothu and Doria". Paris: Impressions Artistique 1893. Published in "Les Maitres de l'Affiche", 1896. Plate no. 46. * Les Maîtres de l'Affiche (The Masters of the Poster) refers to 256 colour lithographic plates used to create a very significant art publication during the Belle Époque in Paris, France. The collection, reproduced from the original works of ninety-seven artists in a smaller format, was put together by Jules Chéret, the father of poster art.By the 1890's the streets of French cities were enlivened by large, colourful posters. The poster had not only caught the fancy of the public, but its best examples were already being regarded as true works of art (specifically, as fine prints) to be exhibited, reviewed in journals, collected and reproduced in a more manageable form. In the last five years of the 19th century, Imprimerie Chaix was to play a great part in codifying, hallowing and perpetuating the ebullient spirit of the Belle Epoque. The renowned set of 256 prints were created by Imprimerie Chaix, forever to be known as a set as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche. Each print was rendered as a separate sheet measuring 11 x 15 inches. [27.9 x 38.1 cm]. The set was compiled in a unique way: Every month for 60 months - from December 1895 through November 1900 - subscribers received a wrapper containing four consecutively numbered prints. On 16 occasions (each of the five Decembers, each of the Junes, and the March and September of the final three years) the monthly wrapper also contained a bonus plate, not a poster reproduction but a specially created lithograph. The compilation of this set of original prints makes up the complete suite known as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche.

He was active for over thirty years during which time he established himself as one of Europe's most import and prolific photographers. Active in every stage of production as well as every popular format, he formed a partnership with the Rome-based Edmund Behles and they exhibited extensively (and successfully) in London (1862), Paris (1867), Vienna (1873) and Nuremberg (1885). Sommers also served briefly as official photographer to the Italian king Victor Emmanuel II. Sommer photographed nearly every aspect of Italian life from museums at the Vatican and Naples, to the ruins at Pompeii, and the streets of Rome, Naples, and Sicily. Indeed, his masterpiece is the album Dintorni di Napoli which documents everyday life in Naples. This is an excellent example of Sommers work, a handsomely presented album including landscapes, architecture and artefacts.

[235] advertising three works by Gilbert Parker, and the last page of advertisements (p. [238]) ending with The Land of the Sun, by Christian Reid. Printed on laid paper with horizontal wire marks. Small octavo (7 3/16 x 4 7/8 inches; 183 x 123 mm.). [iv], 233, [1, blank], [4, ads] pp. Title-page printed in red and black.Publisher's pale yellow buckram over boards, front cover and spine stamped in red, black and gilt, tan coated end-papers, laid paper flyleaves, top edge stained yellow. Mild darkening, and very light rubbing to cloth at extremities. With the small leather bookplate of noted collector of Americana, John Stuart Groves, and its feint offset on front end-papers. Front free end-paper with a short tear on top margin and two very small chips on fore-edge. A near fine copy, chemised in a quarter crimson morocco slipcase, spine lettered in gilt."There has been much creasing of brows over this key book in any Crane collection, and for the most part deduction and discussion have focussed on the word congratulated on page 225. According to Merle Johnson, three states exist, indicated as follows: in the first, the half-word lated, in the last line of page 225, is perfect; in the second, the type at this point is mutilated; in the third, the type has been patched and the final letter d is out of perpendicular? Finally, it may be noted that the word bank on page 4, line 11, should be bunk. This mis-print persists in all Appleton editions until 1900." (Williams & Starrett, pp. 19/20).The Red Badge of Courage is a 1895 war novel by American author Stephen Crane. It is considered one of the most influential works in American literature. The novel, in which a young recruit in the American Civil War is faced by the cruelty of war, has made Crane an international success. Although he was born after the war and had not at the time experienced battle firsthand, the novel is considered an example of Realism.Stephen Crane (1871-1900) was an American poet, novelist, and short story writer. Crane began writing at the age of four and had published several articles by the age of 16. Having little interest in university studies, he left college in 1891 to work as a reporter and writer. Prolific throughout his short life, he wrote notable works in the Realist tradition as well as early examples of American Naturalism and Impressionism. He is recognized by modern critics as one of the most innovative writers of his generation. Crane's first novel was the 1893 Bowery tale Maggie: A Girl of the Streets, generally considered by critics to be the first work of American literary Naturalism. He won international acclaim in 1895 for his Civil War novel The Red Badge of Courage, which he wrote without having any battle experience.Williams and Starrett 3; BAL 4071; Grolier, 100 American, 98.

Indrammet på syrefrit karton i lys eg med anti-reflektivt glas med en UV beskyttelse på 70 %. Signature stamp of the artist's signature in the lower right of the work and signature monogram stamp of the artist angle; signature stamp on the back of the workshop. Mention handwritten on the back, in pencil, title, and date: 1895 Very nice condition.. Provenance: the artist's studio, referenced to catalog Atelier Louis Anquetin (Thierry de Maigret, 28/11/08). Louis Anquetin, Étrépagny born in 1861 and died in Paris in 1932, is an important French painter. He began his career with avant - garde artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Henri de Toulouse - Lautrec. With Émile Bernard, he is the inventor of Cloisonnisme. From 1884 to 1893, Louis Anquetin continues to explore new opportunities introduced by the release of Impressionism in French painting. From 1893, after a long confrontation with the "old masters", he adopts a bias pictorial that will line the general art movement, and take away from his friends. Dazzled by the baroque art and its creative force, so he thinks his childhood friends were involved in a pathway leading to the death of painting. He believes in a "perfect painting" which is embodied in the re - remember the lessons of Michelangelo and Rubens among others. His work becomes more conventional, he advocated a return to business by offering to reflect on the a priori conditions of any possible form of art in accordance with the rules of perspective and anatomy, as practiced by the masters the sixteenth and seventeenth century. Leaving only a few works that can be described as monumental, Anquetin turns prolific with its many studies and sketches, who considered that the design was "a very powerful means of expression" compulsory foundation of all arts plastics. Working voluntarily countdown of his time, Louis Anquetin made possible the existence of an original modern figuration. By his obstinacy and his passion for painting, he has indeed prevented is completely closed the way to the great Western tradition. You can admire his works in many prestigious museums such as the Musée d'Orsay or the Louvre in Paris, San Francisco and Detroit, the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, the National Gallery and the Tate London, ... etc. - - - Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.

1895 Wisden Almanack Rebound Like Hardbacks , Special.

This is a very special 1895 Wisden Almanack, rebound by Wisden Almanack in the middle of the 20th Century to mimic an 1896 hardback, a quirky Wisden Almanack that will appeal to some. The similarities to a hardback are that the paste downs are yellow (with a Liverpool cricket club stamp) , the gilt on the covers and spine are identical to that of an 1896. It is slightly smaller by 1/8th inch , smoky top to page block and severe foxing around photo plate, the uniqueness is what will appeal.
