Preparatory Illustration for Frontispiece of Syr Percyvelle of Gales

(Kelmscott Press), (c. 1895). Near Fine. An original preparatory piece for the Kelmscott Press edition of Syr Percyvelle of Gales from the recently auctioned archive of artist Robert Catterson-Smith. It was created from a photograph of the drawing done by Edward Burne-Jones for the book's frontispiece and then was extensively reworked in ink and gouache by Robert Catterson-Smith in preparation for engraving. It is mounted to a card board with details of the faces in pencil in the hand of Burne-Jones, who has also initialed the card, presumably to indicate that he has approved it for the engraving. Also written on the sheet in pencil are "exactly same size" and "Syr Percyvelle." In his bibliography of the Kelmscott Press, William Peterson provides Catterson-Smith's description of his artistic procedures for converting Burne-Jones's pencil drawings. He describes applying wash to a pale photograph of the drawing to get rid of all but the essential lines, copying those lines in sharp pencil until all traces of the photograph had disappeared. Then came the inking, which was done with a fine brush and very black ink (Peterson Bibliography, p. xxx). The illustration is near fine. The board to which it is mounted has spotting and browning, primarily to the margins and numerous practice black ink strokes. A wonderful example of the illustration techniques used at the Kelmscott Press. ORIG/120216.

        An Island Garden

      - Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1895. First edition, second printing (pp. 126) with pictures and decorations by Childe Hassam. Tall octavo (23 cm) in white publisher’s cloth (scarce), gilt title and decoration by Thaxter’s friend Sara Wyman Whitman (1842- 1904) whose cover designs, an elegant interpretation of the Art Nouveau, enhanced the work of, among others, Oliver Wendell Holmes and Sarah Orne Jewett. The tissue- guarded plates, illustrations and decorations are by the American impressionist Childe Hassam (1859- 1935) whose style seems perfectly suited to the flowered summer retreat on Appledore Island in the Gulf of Maine where Thaxter hosted a famous salon for writers and artists. Here, the frontispiece, title page, various headpieces, and eleven full-page garden portraits exhibit Hassam’s skill depicting light and colour. Celia Thaxter (1835- 1894) was a popular poet of the time (They would have said ‘poetess’). Her work, notable for its intimate familiarity with wild nature combined with conventional subjects and rhyming schemes, appeared frequently in The Atlantic. Her poem ‘The Burgomaster Gull’ is probably the best known. In Hassam’s treatment it’s as though Thaxter herself somehow has become an element in the landscape. This book, an account of her splendid flower garden on Appledore, is rightly regarded as “one of the most elaborate pieces of bookmaking of the period” (BAL). Spine and the cover’s front edge sunned, front hinge re-enforced; the binding becoming a bit dry. A bright, attractive copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

ENTRÜCKT IN DIE ZUKUNFT. SOZIALPOLITISCHER ROMAN

Ferd. Dümmlers Verlagsbuchhandlung, Berlin 1895 - Octavo, pp. [1-4] 1-278 [279] [280: printer's imprint], original terra cotta wrappers printed in black, all edges untrimmed. First edition. A young doctor, Jules Raymont, mysteriously vanishes from Paris. A year later a manuscript fragment is found in which he records his experiences since his disappearance. As the result of a hypnotic experiment, he has awakened in the year 2093, 175 years after the Great Revolution of 1918. After the revolution, the communist and then the Social Democratic governments fall. A new era of universal cooperation takes hold and there is world peace, a utopia. The whole Earth is now the property and home of a united mankind. Paris has been transformed into an idyll in which the residents live a paradisiacal existence. There have been great technological advances, including antigravity airships and expeditions to the Moon. The societal principles are similar to those of the author's earlier novel FREELAND (1889). "In this book he accepts revolution, but attempts to avoid the dictatorship. His classless society is obviously Marxian" - Kretzmann, pp. 123-5. Kretzmann, The Pre-War German Utopian Novel (1890-1914), Ph.D. diss., Brown University, May, 1936, pp. 123-5, 212. Lexikon 1, pp. 119-20. Bloch (2002) 1466. Not in Nagl.         Photographs - Cabinets Cards with Original Envelopes - Portraits of Dr. Witter K. Tingley - Notable Connecticut Surgeon

Japan, 1895. Yokohama, 1895. Seven (7) original cabinet card photographs taken by Japanese Photographer Kozaburo Tamamura, each accompanied by the original envelope. Comprises two unqiue images and duplicates of them. Front cover of mailing box has also been retained, featuring the photographer's label completed in manuscript, and Japanese postally used stamps, and ink postmarks dated 7 July 1895. The parcel was addressed to Connecticut surgeon Dr. W. K. Tingley, a notable American physician and the sitter in these portraits, on the Steam Yacht Eleanor, as he was making a world voyage with millionaire William A. Slater. Photographer's printed card mounts measure approximately 13 x 18 cm, the photographs measure approximately 9,5 x 14 cm. Occasional tears to envelopes at corners, otherwise in Very Good Condition, most cabinet cards having never been removed from envelopes. Early original cabinet card portrait photographs by renowned Japanese photographer Kozaburo Tamamura (1856 - ca. 1923), who is regarded as one of the originators of "Yokohama Shashin" (tourist photographs). Tamamura opened his first shop in the district of Asakusa in Tokyo, in 1874. In 1883 he moved to Yokohama and opened a studio where he prospered, and where these cabinet cards were produced by him. He was most active in the 1890s, producing albumen photographs as well as collotypes, often hand coloring them. Popular with foreign visitors, he also made pocket-sized photograph albums of local scenes, bound in lacquered wood boards. He continued his photographic work well into the next century, until at least 1909. It is said that in 1896 Tamamura employed over 100 colorists to produce the hand colored albumen photographs to be tipped into Brinkley's "Japan Described and Illustrated by the Japanese," a multi-volume folio work which was compiled and edited by Captain Francis Brinkley, and published in Boston in 1897-98. He would eventually produce over one million hand-colored albumen prints for the Boston publisher J. B. Millet Company for this title. The sitter in Tamamura's studio, at No 2, Benten Dori, Yokahama is Dr. Witter Kinney Tingley, a respected American physician whose medical career was mostly served in Norwich, Connecticut, where he was also appointed Health Officer of the City. Little is known of his early life, but he was one of only four graduates of Bellevue Medical College in New York in 1886, and subsequently served at Bellevue Hospital as a House Staff Physician in the 3d Medical Division from 1887 to 1888. Dr. Tingley went on to practice general medicine and surgery in Norwich, Connecticut and served as President of the Norwich Medical Association in 1890. In 1891, the Connecticut Medical Society selected Dr. Tingley as a delegate to the American Medical Association. Tingley was one of the incorporators of Backus Hospital which was founded in 1893 by William Wolcott Backus and William Albert Slater. By 1894 he was a surgeon and gynecologist at the Backus Hospital in Norwich. Three of his medical reports, describing surgeries performed by him, were published in the 1895 issue of 'Medical Record: A Weekly Journal of Medicine and Surgery' edited by New York surgeon George Shrady, including a leg amputation, the removal of a fibro-cystic ovarian tumor, and the repair of a strangulated inguinal hernia. A well-connected man, evidently in 1895, Dr. Tingley embarked on the luxurious Pleasure Steam Yacht 'Eleanor' as the hired physician, for the ship's maiden voyage around the world, with plans to visit China, Japan, Hawaii, and so forth, a journey which was to take two years. The $320,000 yacht was owned by his wealthy friend and famous yachtsman William Albert Slater (1857-1919), founder of the Backus Hospital, a textile industrialist, son and heir of the philanthropist John Fox Slater of Rhode Island. When she was launched at Bath, Maine, the yacht received accolades nation-wide. She was a magnificent vessel, described as palatial, and said to be the finest in the country after the 'Vaiant' built for Vanderbilt. [The Lewiston Daily Sun issue of 19 May 1894 features a delightful account of 'Eleanor' and this voyage before its departure. The San Francisco Chronicle, 23 July 1895, also makes an announcement.] It was on this voyage that Dr. Tingley had the present cabinet card photographs taken, to distribute to family and friends upon his return home. Dr. Tingley was also a health officer appointed by the City of Norwich after the passage of the 1897 Act, his appointment of four years beginning on 2 October 1899. He was a highly respected figure in the community, as such his name appears frequently in the Norwich Bulletin Newspaper. Usually praising him, the issue of 27 April 1912 however reports an incident where he was arrested and charged a fine for not reporting a case of tuberculosis. He was a member of the Norwich Board of Trade in 1909, and still very active in the community in 1914. From the from San Francisco Chronicle, July 23, 1895: "The steam yacht Eleanor with a single exception the finest vessel of the sort, owned in the United States gilded smoothly into port last evening and anchored off Clay Street wharf. The yacht is owned by W. A. Slater of Norwich Connecticut, son of the philanthropist who gave $1,000,000 to the negroes of the South, founding the Slater fund. The owner of the Eleanor is aboard with a party of friends who have been with him on an eastward trip around the world. The Eleanor cost $320,000 and is a floating palace in reality". The cabinet card was a style of photograph which was widely used for photographic portraiture after 1870. It consisted of a thin photograph mounted on a card typically measuring 108 by 165 mm (?4 1/4 by ?6 1/2 inches).. Very Good.

The sitter in Tamamura's studio, at No 2, Benten Dori, Yokohama is Dr. It consisted of a thin photograph mounted on a card typically measuring 108 by 165 mm (?4 1/4 by ?6 1/2 inches).

        THE ROSE AND THE KEY

Downey & Co. n.d. [1895]., [London] - Octavo, pp. [i-vii] viii [1] 2-432, original decorated dark green cloth, front and spine panels stamped in gold, publisher's monogram stamped in blind on rear panel. First one-volume edition. First published as a 36-part serial in ALL THE YEAR ROUND, 21 January 1871 to 23 September 1871, and first published as a book by Chapman and Hall in 1871. "One of the most interesting of Le Fanu's novels, THE ROSE AND THE KEY concerns Maud Vernon, whose mother commits her to an asylum when Maud is not mentally ill. A study of human avarice and terror, Maud becomes the victim of an alienist, Dr. Antomarchi . The characterization of Dr. Antomarchi and the realistic and believable study of the asylum give a particular horror to the novel. Le Fanu may have been influenced by Wilkie Collin's THE WOMAN IN WHITE. However, Le Fanu creates his own genuine study of human weakness and cruelty." - Gary William Crawford. "There is much in the novel that recalls Charles Reade's treatment of a somewhat similar theme in HARD CASH, and it is hardly necessary to say that the most stirring episodes concern the awful experiences of Maud Vernon at Glarewoods . Like a surgeon who discovers a curious beauty in some physical abnormality he is called upon to remove, Le Fanu seizes on these scenes of horror and no matter how his story may have dragged in the preceding chapters he warms to the occasion with a renewed zest. Every nerve must be thrilled, each harrowing circumstance must be related, and the episode is presented to the excited reader with a kind of cold frenzy." - Nelson Browne. Early private owner's bookplate affixed to front paste-down. A hint of rubbing to cloth at spine ends and corner tips, mild bumps to upper corner tips, a bright, very good or better copy. Very scarce in this condition. (#156343) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Under the Cherry Blossom

1895 - Beautiful Original Kate Greenaway Watercolor GREENAWAY, Kate, [artist]. "Under the Cherry Blossom". [N.d., ca. 1895]. Pen, ink and watercolor drawing. [N.d, c.a. 1895]. Two young girls in a daisy strewn meadow with five geese in the foreground and a tree laden with blossoms in the background. (Image size: 3 3/4 x 5 1/2 inches; 11 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches framed). Matted, framed, glazed. Kate Greenaway (1846-1901). Born in London to an engraver father and a seamstress mother, Kate Greenaway's drawings were to capture forever an idealized image of Regency in childhood and rural life. From the age of twelve, Greenaway studied her craft, first at the Finsbury School of Art and later at the newly founded Slade School of Fine Art. Greenaway got her first commissions through her father and after one of her card designs sold 25,000 copies in just a few weeks, her work became very sought after by publishers. Greenaway's lines were always light, fine and sure, her watercolors delicate in color and application and she used little or no shading in her work. She depicted clothing meticulously and drew her figures, flowers and plants from life. Her enormous popularity spawned hundreds of imitators. HBS 67428. $8,500
