Engraved title-page, borders and initial capitals. 1 vols. 8vo. The Kelmscott Keats. Keats - especially his "La Belle Dame sans Merci" - was an icon of the Pre-Raphaelites, and how deeply Morris felt about the publication of this book is illustrated by his discovery of some initial mistakes in the text of "La Belle Dame sans Merci." According to Sidney Colvin in his John Keats [1918], p. 470: "I was with him when he happened to open the sheet on which La Belle Dame sans Merci was printed. He began to read it and was suddenly aware of unfamiliar words ...Great was his indignation. He swiftly altered the words and then read the poem to me, remarking that it was the germ from which all the poetry of his group had sprung - The sheet was reprinted and the earlier and better version restored ...". Early Pre-1900 Self-Published 1st Revised Edition (Museum piece). 1894 Life of Maria Beulah Woodworth Very Rare Self-Published Edition from this Pioneer of the Pentecostal Charismatic Movement _____________________________________________________________________ Maria Beulah Woodworth-Etter (1844-1924) was an American healing evangelist. Her ministry style would serve as a model for Pentecostalism. Woodworth-Etter was born in New Lisbon, Ohio as Maria Beulah Underwood. She was born again at the age of thirteen. Maria immediately heard the call of God and dedicated her life to the Lord. Of her calling she would later write, "I heard the voice of Jesus calling me to go out in the highways and hedges and gather in the lost sheep." In 1863, she married Philo Horace Woodworth, whom she divorced for infidelity in 1891. She had six children with Woodworth, five of whom died young. In 1902, she married Samuel Etter, who died in 1914. She studied the scriptures and began preaching the Lord's divine will in healing. It didn't take long to see that evangelism and healing went hand in hand as thousands were won to Christ as a result of seeing others healed. Sister Etter pioneered the way for Pentecostal manifestations that are so common in Charismatic and Pentecostal groups today. In 1912 she joined the young Pentecostal movement and preached widely in Pentecostal circles until her death, helping found the Assemblies of God in 1914. In 1918 she founded what is today Lakeview Church (Temple) of Indianapolis, Indiana. CONDITION REPORT General Condition: Sold 'AS IS' As you can see in the … [Click Below for Full Description]

This set is complete, and in excellent condition internally. Bound in the two volume configuration, in heavy cream cloth stamped in blue with the distinctive yacht design on the front boards. Some soiling and staining to the covers, extremities worn, corners showing, some mild abrasion, back hinge of volume II is cracked but holding. HAMSUN, KNUT. - [THE GOSPEL OF NEO-ROMANTICISM]
København, 1894. Samtidigt slidt halvlæderbd med rygforgyldning. Ryg lidt skæv. Indvendig ren og pæn. Contemporary half calf with gilt spine. Spine worn and a bit cocked. Internally nice and clean. ¶ First edition of Hamsun's masterpiece, generally considered his best work, one of the most important literary productions of the late 19th century, and together with "Hunger", Hamsun's most famous book. "Pan" profoundly influenced the entire trajectory of modern literature and with its brilliant and intimate descriptions of nature, it also pioneered the Pantheism of 20th century literature, as well as creating a new kind of Neo-Romanticist novels. Together with "Hunger (from 1890), "Pan" pioneered modern psychological literature and the techniques now known as "stream of consciousness" and "interior monologue".Few other authors of the period have had the kind of impact that Hamsun had. Ernest Hemingway attempted to write in the style of Hamsun, as did Henry Miller who considered him his teacher. Thomas Mann loved him and considered him the most important author of the period, and Hermann Hesse referred to him as his favourite author. The Russian authors of the period, e.g. Bosris Pasternak, were profoundly influenced by his books, and Andre Gide considered him superior to Dostojevski. Everyone read him, and everyone was influenced by him, Kafka, Brecht, Gorky, Wells...According to his American bibliographer Robert Ferguson (in 1987), Hamsun is "one of the most influential and innovative literary stylists of the past hundred years". Isaac Bashevis Singer called Hamsun "the fathe … [Click Below for Full Description]

Twain, Mark (Samuel L. Clemens)
American Publishing Company, Hartford, CT, 1894. 8vo. 432 pp. Bound in brown cloth with gilt lettering and black decorations on the spine and the front board. Frontispiece portrait of the author with tissue guard, marginal illustrations throughout, full-page illustration preceding "Those Extraordinary Twins". Contemporary ownership inscription (dated 1894) on the first blank leaf. First edition, first state (BAL 3442). The Tragedy of Pudd'nhead Wilson is a novel satirizing small town life, slavery, and racism and is generally regarded as one of Twain's most important later works. The related novella "Those Extraordinary Twins" is perhaps of more historical interest for its insights into Twain's writing process, but is representative of his lighter farce. A very handsome copy of this high spot of American literature. A few hints of rubbing to the extremities, but overall a very bright and clean copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Doyle, A. Conan
Illustrations by Sidney Paget. London: George Newnes, 1894. Original royal blue cloth decorated in black and gilt, beveled, all page edges gilt. First Edition in book form of these eleven Sherlock Holmes cases, ending with his apparent death in a struggle with Professor Moriarty at Reichenbach Falls in "The Adventure of the Final Problem." Other well-known cases in this volume include the adventures of "Silver Blaze," "the Musgrave Ritual," "the Crooked Man" and "the Greek Interpreter." As with the earlier ADVENTURES, the cases were issued in this book form after twelve of them had appeared in monthly issues of The Strand Magazine. However, with the MEMOIRS, one of the twelve cases ("The Adventure of the Cardboard Box") was excluded from the book -- due to its portrayal of either an illicit love affair, a double murder (complete with severed ears in a cardboard box), or both. Doyle so liked his "Cardboard Box" beginning -- in which Holmes breaks into Watson's thoughts -- that for this book he transferred it to the beginning of "The Case of the Resident Patient," along with the corresponding Paget illustration. This copy has the grey floral endpapers (some have an orange peacock-feather design -- priority if any, unknown). The volume is in near-fine condition, with the gilt unusually bright (even the spine panels); there are a few short nicks at the spine ends, but there is scarcely any other exterior soil or wear. The front endpaper is barely cracking and the rear one remains intact (both are firm), and the leaves show occasional (very minor) foxing. Doyle's ADVENTURES and … [Click Below for Full Description]

AUSTEN, Jane; THOMSON, Hugh (illustrator).
London George Allen, 1894. First fully illustrated edition, one of 250 large paper copies 'printed for England and 25 copies for America'; 4to (250 x 168 mm); with the illustrations specially printed on China paper and laid down, a very few, minor marginal marks, browning to fore-edge, else fine; contemporary Venice style binding by J. Weidman of Vienna, the upper cover onlaid with intricate strapwork, enhanced and panelled in gilt, the rear cover blind-embossed with a decorative honeycomb motif, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, as published, rebacked preserving original tree calf spine, near-fine. The first edition of this title to include illustrations with the text since Bentley's edition (first published in 1833) only contained an illustrated frontispiece. This copy would appear to be unique in having such an elaborate and intricate binding by the Viennese binder; J. Weidman 'k.u.k. Kammerlieferant' (gilt embossed inside upper cover), which translates as 'Purveyor to the Imperial and Royal Chamber'. This indicates that Weidman held not only a Royal Warrant (k.u.k. Hoflieferant) but the higher warrant as personal suppliers to the Emperor and the Empress. An Imperial and Royal Warrant of Appointment during the Austro-Hungarian Empire was issued to vendors who supplied goods or services to the Austrian imperial court in Vienna and/or the Hungarian royal court in Budapest. The warrant was normally an official document, which enabled the supplier to advertise the fact and thus lend itself prestige. Suppliers continued to charge for their goods and services. Original full vellum, titles to spine in gilt, decoration palm motif designed by Ricketts to spine and covers in gilt, fore and bottom edge untrimmed. AUSTEN, Jane
London: George Allen, 1894. Octavo. Original green cloth, spine and front board elaborately gilt-blocked with peacock design, green coated endpapers, all edges gilt. Bookseller's ticket to foot of front pastedown, ownership inscription in pencil to half-title. Spine minimally cocked, touch of wear to spine and tips, a couple of faint marks to rear board, occasional faint foxing to contents; a very good copy indeed, gilt to front board notably bright. Frontispiece with tissue guard and illustrations by Hugh Thomson. First fully illustrated edition. This was the first edition to feature illustrations accompanying the text, as Bentley's 1833 edition and subsequent printings had featured only a frontispiece. Thomson's "light touch and feeling for period manners provide a charming and accessible gloss to the author's work" (ODNB). The exquisite gilt peacock design on the front cover has led to this work being known as the "peacock edition", and it is one of the most striking examples of late-Victorian pictorial cloth. The trade edition was issued in two formats: with top edge gilt, others untrimmed, or with all edges trimmed and gilt, in a slightly smaller case, as here. Gilson E78. [Attributes: First Edition]

SATTLER (Joseph)
[Click Below for Full Description]
