Clare Winsten (1894-1989)
Mid 20th Century - DescriptionThis interesting work is in the same hand as other works by Winsten and painted to resemble the work by her friend, the English poet and artist, Isaac Rosenberg. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers. ConditionInspection under UV light reveals no restoration. There is a minor tear to the right edge.BiographyClare Winsten was born Clara Birnberg in Romania in 1894, but emigrated to England with her parents in 1902, working as an artist at a time when women were not considered serious contenders in the art world. She trained at the Slade School of Art and rose to prominence as part of the circle of Jewish Modernist painters that included Mark Gertler, David Bomberg and Isaac Rosenberg. Winsten soon became the only female member of their Whitechapel Boys group of artists and poets, and was the only female exhibitor at the (1914) post-Impressionist exhibition Twentieth Century Art: A Review of Modern Movements at the Whitechapel Art Gallery in which this group played a major part. Among her sculptures are examples in Toynbee Hall, Whitechapel, and in the garden of George Bernard Shaw's house, Hertfordshire. She also produced portraits of a number of prominent figures including George Shaw, Dmitri Shostakovich, Benjamin Britten and Mahatma Gandhi. Size: X-Large (>60cm) Framed: No Style: Postimpressionism

Harris, Thomas Lake
Fountaingrove [Santa Rosa, CA]: 1894. 218p., bound in red clothbound bevelled boards with gold trim and lettering still bright, decorated free end papers a bit browned as is the titlepage (text block still white),else very good condition. First edition. Written and published at the Fountaingrove Community, where Harris had established a successful utopian community that had, at its high point, some 1700 acres under cultivation. They also ran one of the first vineyards in the Sonoma/Napa county area. Local allegations of free love activities forced Thomas Lake Harris to flee the community in 1896. The early Japanese immigrant Kanaye Nagasawa, one of the founders of the local wine industry, was a member of the community, and typesetting for Fountaingrove was done by another Japanese American, known as Arai, according to Robert V. TESLA, NIKOLA. [MARTIN, T.C.]
New York: The Electrical Engineer, 1894. First edition. RARE FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL CLOTH of Tesla's most influential book in English. "Tesla left Philadelphia by rail at the end of February [1893] for the National Electric Light Association convention in St. Louis. Accompanied by T.C. Martin, who was covering both lectures for Electrical Engineer, they discussed the creation of a textbook based on the inventor's collected writings. The first half would be devoted to the full range of inventions associated with the AC polyphase system, with chapters on motor design, single phase and polyphase circuits, armatures, and transformers; the second half would contain Tesla's three discourses on high-frequency phenomena, which he has presented in New York, London and Philadelphia. With an introduction written by Martin and a few miscellaneous articles at the end, the treatise would run almost five hundred pages.

"Martin had achieved a great coup, solidifying a deal with what many people were saying was 'the greatest living electrician.' The Inventions, Researches and Writings of Nikola Tesla would be a landmark text, becoming a virtual bible for the numerous electricians who read it" (Seifer, Wizard: The Life and Times of Nikola Tesla).

New York: The Electrical Engineer, 1894. Octavo, original rust-colored cloth; custom box. Light general wear to cloth; early reinforcement to hinges. Rust spot on title and extending to Preface and first few Contents leaves. VERY RARE. Very Good.
