SATTLER (Joseph)
[Click Below for Full Description]

AUSTEN, Jane; THOMSON, Hugh (illustrator).
London George Allen, 1894. First edition, first impression of "the Peacock edition"; 8vo; frontispiece, title vignette and illustrations by Hugh Thomson, facsimile dedication from Thomson, a little minor foxing, hinges pulling slightly with some splitting to endpapers; publisher's dark green cloth cloth with the stunning gilt depiction of a peacock on an urn to upper cover and related gilt decoration to spine, gilt edges, spine with shelf-lean (as often with this title), slight rubbing to corner tips, but overall a very good copy. The first edition of this title to include illustrations with the text since Bentley's edition (first published in 1833) only contained an illustrated frontispiece. Hugh Thomson (1860-1920) renowned illustrator, in pen and ink, of classic titles; he was born in Ireland where his skills as an illustrator were recognised while still a teenager. Consequently Thomson was trained by John Vinycomb, the head designer at Marcus Ward & Co., a prominent Belfast publishing house. He subsequently moved to England, working from 1883 for MacMillan & Co., illustrating all six of Jane Austen's novels and other literary classics. By 1900 he had become one of the most popular illustrators of his time. However, during the First World War there was less demand for his style of work and he took a job with the Board of Trade until his untimely death from heart disease. Attractive signed copy of Dodge's last book, with a anagram in her hanwdriting "written for the purchaser of this book, April 27, 1895" tipped in. The anagram also is signed. While Dodge notes that it is "too simple and anagram to require an answer here", it took our shop staff some little while to figure it out. [Click Below for Full Description]

Edouard VAILLANT & Augustin CABANES
[Click Below for Full Description]

Twain, Mark. (Samuel L. Clemens)
American Publishing Company, Hartford, 1894. First edition, first state of Twain's story about two boys. Octavo, original brown cloth, elaborate gilt titles and tooling to the spine and front panel, frontispiece engraved photographic portrait of Twain with facsimile signature, with marginal illustrations to nearly every page. In fine condition. An exceptional example. "A major part of Twain's Mississippi writings. It resembles Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn in being set before the Civil War in a small Missouri town modeled on Hannibal. However, it has a much more somber tone. While it contains humor, it deals frankly with small-town prejudice, slavery, miscegenation, lost birthright, degenerate aristocratic values and distorted parental love" (Rasmussen, 372). "Includes a series of brilliant epigrams, each the headpiece of a chapter, which are distillations of Twain's wit and wisdom" (Benet, 795). With frontispiece photographic portrait of Twain and copious marginal line-cut illustrations. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Quelques corrections. VOIR PHOTOS ON JOINT : HISTORY OF THE MUMMIES by Octave UZANNE (translated from the french by an anonymous) 16 pages dactylographiées à l'encre violette.
