[Click Below for Full Description]

Moore, George
Walter Scott, 1894. First edition. 375, [1], [14 (ads)] pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Inscribed Presentation Copy. Original green cloth. Hinges cracked, spine a little faded and covers slightly rubbed. Gilcher A19. Esther Waters established Moore's reputation as a novelist: 24,000 copies were sold within the year, and many still regard Moore's Zolaesque tale of a servant girl to be his finest and most characteristic novel. Esther Waters, like Moore's earlier books, was banned by Mudie's and Simth & Son circulating libraries. Moore's novels, with his insistence on issuing all of his novels after the first in single-volume format to appeal directly to the book-buying public, were one of the major factors in the collapse of the circulating libraries and the demise of the Victorian triple-decker. Inscribed presentation copies are rare, but the title page of this copy bears the following inscription: "To Evelyn Marshall Field, with many kind wishes, George Moore 1915." Evelyn Field was the wife of Marshal Field, 3rd, grandson of the famous Chicago merchant. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

SOCIETY FOR PSYCHICAL RESEARCH ] , W. F. Barrett, John Beloff, John, et al (editors).
Society for Psychical Research 1894-2008, London. Hardcovers & softcovers. Octavos. 58 hardcover volumes & 46 wrappered issues. Original cloth lettered in gilt on spines; the final 46 issues in original printed wrappers. In a number of instances (particularly later in the run) the volumes are made up from parts, bound up to match the earlier cloth bindings (presumably the SPR stopped issuing bound volumes so the previous owner, Dr. Coleman, had the wrappered parts custom bound to try to match the ealier cloth bindings). The hardcover volumes comprise a complete run of bound issues from the first in 1884 through to Vol.61, 1996-1997 (several years are combined into single volumes, ie. Vol.XXII & XXIII, Vol. XXV & XXVI and Vol. LVI & LVII). Vols. 62 to 72 are represented by sets of individual issues in their original wrappers: 5 issues each for Vol. 62 (July 1997 - July 1998) and Vol. 62 (Oct. 1998 - Oct. 1999), and four issues each for subsequent volumes (Jan.-Oct). Also included are various odd numbers in wrappers: Vol.73, No.894, Jan.2008; Vol.75, Nos.903-905, April, July & Oct. 2011; Vol.76, Nos. 907- 909, April, July & Oct. 2012; and Vol.77, Nos. 911-912, April & July 2013. Occasional b/w illustrations. As is well-known, the Society for Pyschical Research is the most renowned of the various pyschical investigation societies that began to appear in the late nineteenth century. It published both the "Journal" - which was intended for members and associates only - and he "Proceedings" which presented their findings to the public. London: Elkin Mathews & John Lane, 1894. Hardcover. Scarce. One of 650 copies. Presentation copy from the publisher John Lane, inscribed in pencil to the Irish poet and novelist Katharine Tynan Hinkson: "Mrs. Hinkson with the publisher's regards." Presentation and association copies of the two books of the Rhymers' Club are extremely uncommon. The Rhymers' Club, founded in 1890 by the young William Butler Yeats and Ernest Rhys, was a group of London-based poets, Originally it was not much more than a dining club, meeting in pubs, Those who took part included Ernest Dowson, Lionel Johnson, Francis Thompson, Richard Le Gallienne, John Gray, John Davidson, Edwin J. Ellis, Victor Plarr, Selwyn Image, Lord Alfred Douglas, Arthur Cecil Hillier, John Todhunter, G.A. Greene, Arthur Symons, Ernest Radford, and Thomas William Rolleston. Oscar Wilde attended some meetings that were held in private homes. The group as a whole matched quite closely Yeats' retrospective idea of 'the tragic generation', destined for failure and in many cases early death. Along with the social element of the Rhymers' Club, they published two volumes of verse. The first, titled The Book of the Rhymers' Club was published by Elkin Mathews in 1892. The Second Book of the Rhymers' Club, with five poems by Yeats, appeared two years later in 1894, published by the recently merged Elkin Mathews and John Lane. They had print runs of 450 and 650 respectively. By the time Arthur Ransome wrote his Bohemia in London in 1907, the group had long passed into legend." FIRST EDITION, THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE DISCOVERY OF HOMO ERECTUS, PRINTED IN A SMALL PRINT RUN IN BATAVIA, NOW JAKARTA, AND HERE ACCOMPANIED BY A MOST COHERENT GROUP OF 26 VERY RARE PUBLICATIONS BY DUBOIS ON COMPARATIVE ANATOMY. Although hominid fossils had been found and studied before, Dubois was the first anthropologist to embark upon a purposeful search for them. Dubois was born and raised in the village of Eijsden, Limburg, where his father, Jean Dubois, was an apothecary, later the mayor. Interested in all phenomena of the world of nature, Eugène explored the ‘caves’ (‘Grotten’, actually underground limestone mines) of Mount St Peter and amassed collections of plant parts, stones, insects, shells, and animal skulls. From age 12-13 on, he attended school in the Limburg city of Roermond, boarding with a family there and then he dropped out. In Roermond he attended lectures on Darwin’s new theory of evolution given by the German biologist, Karl Vogt. Resisting his apothecary father’s plan to follow in his footsteps, Dubois, encouraged by his teachers, in 1877 decided to study medicine at the University of Amsterdam. While a student … [Click Below for Full Description]

Rilke, Rainer Maria, Dichter (1875-1926).
1894. 66 tls. beidseitig beschriebene und 19 w. Bll. Ldr. d. [Click Below for Full Description]

1894 THOUSAND NIGHTS AND A NIGHT CAPTAIN SIR R.F. BURTON TWELVE VOLUMES Description One Thousand and One Nights is a collection of Middle Eastern and South Asian stories and folk tales compiled in Arabic during the Islamic Golden Age. It is often known in English as the Arabian Nights, from the first English language edition (1706), which rendered the title as The Arabian Nights' Entertainment. The work was collected over many centuries by various authors, translators and scholars across the Middle East, Central Asia and North Africa. The tales themselves trace their roots back to ancient and medieval Arabic, Persian, Indian, Turkish,Egyptian and Mesopotamian folklore and literature. In particular, many tales were originally folk stories from the Caliphate era, while others, especially the frame story, are most probably drawn from the Pahlavi Persian work Hazar Afsan which in turn relied partly on Indian elements. THE BOOK OF THE THOUSAND NIGHTS AND A NIGHT Translated from the Arabic by Captain Sir R.F. Burton Published in 1894 Bound hardback with beautiful decorative embossed boards. Light shelfwear and mild foxing. Would make a fine addition to any library. Track Page Views With Auctiva's FREE Counter.

1894. 8vo (184 x 121 mm). 287 pp. Original gilt-lettered navy blue cloth. Slight rubbing to spine edges and extremities, corners bumped with damp stain at lower left on front; neat repairs at gutters to pp 279-82. Presentation copy warmly inscribed on the title page: "To Semen Ilich Bychkov from the author. Anton Chekhov. 25 March 1897. In nice memory." Bychkov was a waiter at the Grand Hotel in Moscow where Chekhov stayed. "I'd been a factory worker, a yard man, worked in a puppet theater, in pantomime and done everything," Bychkov recalled. "Of all the people staying at the hotel only Anton Chekhov spoke to me simply, man-to-man, without pride, with none of that looking down on you. And he gave me his writings, I started reading and at that minute a new light illuminated me . I loved him fervently with all my soul" (Rayfield p 391). The character Nikolai Chikildeev in the highly regarded short story "Peasants" (1897) was apparently based on Bychkov. "You certainly took me as a type, as one of your harmless peasants," Bychkov wrote Chekhov. "You called me Nicholas and my wife Olga" (The Oxford Chekhov, 1968, p 302). The two became so close that Chekhov acted as godfather to Bychkov's daughter. She recalled that her father worshiped Chekhov. He helped the playwright's sister publish his letters and organized numerous events dedicated to Chekhov. See Literaturnoe nasledstvo: Chekhov, Vol 68, pp 265, 268, 884, 890 and 924. - Provenance: Semen Ilich Bychkov (presentation inscription); Emauel Tsypelzon. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
