A large format autograph and friendship album with fine Calligraphy, Autographs and Stamp Portraits of classmates belonging to J. W. Hertzog, Exeter Station PA, from his senior year at Eastman College, Poughkeepsie, New York. 1894.

1894. Unpaginated autograph and friendship album with a perfusion on entries from classmates from across the country, the islands, Mexico, Canada and Japan. A majority of entries include an identified photographic stamp of the classmate. It concludes with a series of stamp portraits identifying the individuals and their state of residence. The book also includes eleven (11) full page examples of fine hand penned calligraphy birds and another works interspersed throughout the book. There are two additional facing calligraphy decorated pages that highlights the faculty for 1894, again with stamp portraits, with large format stamps for Clement and Mrs. Gaines, the president and treasurer of the college. The final area of particular note relates to Eastman not merely being a theoretical school, students gained practical experience in the business arts of the time by actually performing the tasks that would be expected of them in their working careers. Apparently Hertzog was majoring in banking and has a diagram of Assignment of positions E.C. Bank for Tuesday May 10, 1894. The final page has impressions from all of the rubber stamps that were used at the East- man College Bank.

Perhaps most striking amongst her achievements was running for President of the United States in 1872, likely the first woman to do so, and with the former slave Frederick Douglas as her running-mate. She sought further nominations in 1884 and 1892. Later in her life she campaigned with views on abortion, eugenics, vegetarianism, sex education, prostitution, free love, and even short skirts. By 1877 she was living in London and met her third husband, banker John Biddulph Martin, and married in 1883. Under the name Victoria Woodhull Martin she began publishing "The Humanitarian", running from 1892 to 1901. Her husband died that year and she gave up published. She died in 1927, having lived a life with careers as varied as a Stockbroker (first woman on Wall Street to own her own brokerage, with her sister), a newspaper editor, women's rights advocate, and member of the First International. In Britain her chief contribution to public life was through the publication of "The Humanitarian", in which she was helped by her daughter Zula. Size: Octavo (standard book size).         Hoyt's A Black Sheep

New York: The Strobridge Lith. Co., 1894. Original poster. Color lithograph. 38.75 x 29 inches. This beautiful 1894 poster for Charles Hale Hoyt's 'A Black Sheep And How it Came Out in the Wash' an image of features Fanny Da Costa "The Queen of Burlesque". The New York Times called the play a success and a big hit. According to the review "'A Black Sheep' is amusing, and it has an understandable story. It carries as many singing and dancing 'specialties' as Mr. Hoyt ever out into 'The Tin Soldier' or 'The Brass Monkey'; but those specialties are not introduced in the usual 'I'll-sing-a-song-that-will-tell-you-all-about-it' style."Charles H. Hoyt was a popular American dramatist in the late 19th century. He wrote over twenty comedy dramas, often involving baseball. This is a scarce poster for one of his popular work. The poster is in good condition with some wear along the folds. Minor edge wear and toning at places. Large rip on the right hand of the poster, repaired on verso.

This series of etchings was executed by the British engraver and painter Walter William Burgess RE (1856-1908), who exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1874 and 1903, and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers in 1883. The etchings depict historic and picturesque buildings, sites, and monuments in Chelsea, including Chelsea Reach, Swan Walk, the Royal Hospital, Old Battersea Bridge, Cheyne Walk, Lindsey House, the Old Church, the More Chapel, the More Monument, Petyt House, Carlyle's House, Queen's House, George Eliot's House, Turner's House, Leigh Hunt's House, Belle-Vue House, Whistler's House, Franklin's House, the Physic Garden, Glebe Place, and Lordship Place. The text accompanying Burgess' images was written by two young poets who were highly-regarded figures in the 'decadent' literary circles of the 1890s - Lionel Johnson (1867-1902) and Richard Le Gallienne (1866-1947), who were, with W.B. Yeats, Oscar Wilde, et al., early members of the Rhymer's Club and contributors to The Yellow Book. This copy is from the collection of the actor, restaurateur, and bibliophile David Enders, who was educated at Lindisfarne College and Wadham College, Oxford, before he was commissioned into the Welsh Guards in 1942. He was invalided out of the army in 1944 and then pursued a very successful career as an actor, both in the theatre and in radio drama. In 1950, Enders and his partner, the actor John Glen, opened the restaurant L'Aiglon in Old Church Street, Chelsea: 'the food was excellent and cheap enough to make it an economical alternative to eating at home for those living round about. The business expanded when their friend Sir Laurence Olivier suggested they start a restaurant at the Chichester theatre' (T. Pocock, 'David Enders' in Chelsea Society Annual Report (2000), pp. 63-4 at p. 64). Enders lived in Chelsea, latterly in Carlyle Square, for some fifty years, and his obituarist wrote that he 'might be described by a future anthropologist as a splendid example of Chelsea Man. [...] David was tireless in battling what he considered misguided developments in Chelsea; he was an active member of the Chelsea Society' (loc. cit.).

All pages and bindings relatively bright and tight. A few pages (mainly among the adverts) were once dog-eared but have been smoothed. Gilt slightly faded. Minimal wear to covers with corners very slightly bumped with small abraisions (< 1/8") to lower corners of volumes II & III exposing boards but not visible unless volumes scrutinized. Another barely noticeable feature is the very slight rectilinear discoloration (about 3" x 4") appearing on each volume's upper cover (caused perhaps by bookends or dividers placed between each volume causing small offset marks). Vol. V has wear along the outer upper & lower joints and paper beginning to split along inner hinges (though not affecting the sewing), plus smoothed once dog-eared upper right corners to pages (i-xvi). Because this is a multi-volume set, additional shipping charges may be necessary.

14 eigenh. Briefe mit U. und 2 eh. Handzeichnungen. Wien, 1894 bis 1898.

Briefkopf.

THE BOOK OF THE THOUSAND NIGHTS AND A NIGHT. Translated from the Arabic by Captain Sir R.F. Burton. Reprinted from the original edition and edited by. (12 volume set)

H.S. Nichols, London 1894 - "Library Edition". Twelve volume set, tall octavos, original black cloth elaborately decorated and lettered in gilt, top edges gilt. Cracked inner hinges neatly repaired with rice paper; some bumps to outer corners; some tissue guards creased, a few chipped or loose, a few wanting; page edges yellowed; nicks and soft creases to spine ends; volume 6 has cloth creases to lower half of spine; else a VG set, no owner names, tight in the bindings, gilt bright, attractive. The original Burton translation was privately published by the Kama Shastra Society in 10 volumes in 1885. (The Society had two members and was a legal device for avoiding prosecution for obscenity. The edition gave Benares as place of publication, but it was in reality published in Britain). The present edition "omits given passages in dreadful taste, whose elimination will be mourned by no one." It was not illustrated. Note: 12 kg parcel, extra postage WILL be required.         Pride And Prejudice

George Allen, London 1894 - 8vo, pp. 476. Original green cloth boards, title and peacock design in gilt to front panel and spine. All edges gilt. Tissue guard to frontispiece. Contemporary ownership signature to half-title. Very slight cocking, a little light foxing to preliminaries, otherwise a beautiful copy with absolutely minimal bumping to corners and spine ends, tightly bound, and with the gilt design to boards still bright. Elegant line drawings by Hugh Thomson throughout. The 'Peacock' edition -- fittingly, the most beautiful edition of Austen's novel ever published. A perfect marriage of object and contents, the book was designed and illustrated by Hugh Thomson [1860-1920]. Following the success of this volume, he went on to illustrate all of Austen's work, as well as books by Dickens, Thackeray and J.M.Barrie.

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE. With a preface by George Saintsbury.

FIRST THOMSON EDITION. Octavo. (7.6 x 5.4 inches). Beautifully illustrated throughout with 101 fine line engravings by Thomson. Finely bound in early full dark blue morocco by Zaehnsdorf. Raised bands on spine, with gilt piping. Compartments ruled, lettered and fully decorated in gilt. Triple gilt ruled borders on boards. Board edges with double gilt ruled lines. Blue silk doublures and free endpapers, elaborate gilt tooled floral roll to turn-ins. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. One of an unspecified number of copies which were issued by the publishers with untrimmed fore and lower page edges, presumably for rebinding as they were issued in a plain green binding with a printed paper label. A small amount of rubbing to the extremities but still overall a very near fine copy and a beautiful piece of book production. One of the best, and most popular, illustrated books of the late nineteenth century. Thomson illustrated this work for George Allen publishers before going on to illustrate the other Austen books for Macmillan & Co. This is the scarcest of all the Thomson/Austen titles in first edition.

In spite of the overwhelming forces assembled against him by the island's twelve-year-old ruler, Albuquerque mounted a successful siege, with the result that the ruler become a vassal of the Portuguese crown" (Howgego I, 19ff.). - Signed "A.         Autograph entry in the guestbook of the Villa Discopoli on Capri. Capri, 1894-1908.

1894. 8vo. 66 ff. of entries and 19 blank ff. Contemp. calf with corner fittings and clasp. The present guestbook with more than 230 entries of varying length constitutes a fine document of Rilke's sojourn on Capri, where he had been invited as guest of Mrs. Alice Faehndrich, née Baroness of Nordeck zur Rabenau, sister of Countess Luise Schwerin. The poet spent the winter and following spring of 1906/07 on the island, "from December 4 to May 15 [...] living the life of the House of Roses attentively and gratefully", as he penned on the day before his departure. His wife Clara, too, was twice a guest at the glamorous villa: on Jan. 14, on her way to Egypt, she pays her thanks "for being honoured with two beautiful days at the Villa Discopoli as an unexpected present on my journey - between Berlin and Egypt", and after her return she spends the last few weeks there with her husband: "returned from Egypt the 20th of April, I was received and indulged until May 15 in the dear Villa Discopoli". Rilke's brief but grateful entry does not reveal that here he composed his "Improvisations from the Capri Winter", a work that points beyond his "New Poems". Other guests at the Villa whom Rikle must have met during his stay there included Wolfgang von Tirpitz (the son of Alfred von Tirpitz), Ferdinand von Martitz, and Franz von Niebelschütz. The encounter with the with most far-reaching consequences, however, was that with the young Countess Manon zu Solms-Laubach, a niece of the Hereditary Count Friederich (1833-1900). After her departure, a correspondence ensued which by 1913 was to comprise on Rilke's side no less than 19 letters and a calligraphic transcription of what is possibly Rilke's most famous poem, "The Panther". - Rilke and his wife had known the sister of their hostess Alice (called "Alla" in the guestbook), Countess Luise von Schwerin, née Nordeck zu Rabenau, since 1905, when they had met in Dresden. At the beginning of his stay, Rilke had been the only guest, but with the arrival of Alice, Julie von Nordeck ("Nonna"), and Manon zu Solms-Laubach his solitary position ended. "The exploration of Anacapri, the ascent to Monte Solaro, the visit to the grotta of Migliera and to the little church of Sarita Maria a Cetrella unlocked a countryside similar to Greece [...] During the evenings, the ladies were an attentive audience, when they sat doing their needlework or peeling him an apple, ready to hear his day's work [...]" (cf. Donald A. Prater, Ein klingendes Glas. Das Leben R. M. Rilkes, Hamburg 1989). - Apart from the entries of the Rilkes, the guestbook contains an autograph pencil portrait by Pauline von Kalckreuth, as well as the two-page poem, "Le tombeau du poete" ("d'apres Henry Heine") by Camille du Locle, who was soon to end his life on Capri. Other entries are by Vera Amerongen, Julia and Eugéne Bonnard, Réne and Gilbert Clavel, Emmy and Ernst Gumppenberg, Baroness and Baron Alice and Walther von Falkenhausen, Hanns and Margarethe Floerke, Leonie and Marie Fontaine, Eberhard Hardeck zur Rabenau (Count of Schwerin), Heinrich and Elise Lützow, Richard Mackensen, Ferdinand von Martitz, Julie Baroness Nordeck zu Rabenau (née von Wallenberg), Baron Friedrich von Oppeln-Bronikowski (fine, 1½-page dedication with a 14-line poem), Emmy von Radetzky, Prince Heinrich XXX. zu Reuss, A. von Röder, Auguste Schepp, Leopold von Schlözer (with a half-page, coloured pencil drawing), Luise Schwerin (wife of Count Karl v. Schwerin), Count Friedrich von Schwerin, Countess Manon zu Solms-Laubach, Baroness and Baron Mathilde and Arthur von Stackelberg, Wolfgang von Tirpitz, Baron Jakob and Gabrielle von Uexküll (twice), Hermann Vierordt, Anna von Wallenberg, Wanda von Wallenberg, Elisabeth Wegeli, Baroness Adele Wolff, Count and Countess von Zieten Schwerin, and Ernst Zitelmann (with a fine quote from his "Radierungen und Momentaufnahmen", published the same year). - Wants spine; covers rubbed and with signs of splitting; binding loosened.
