Of the Friendship of Amis and Amile Done out of the Ancient French into English by William Morris

London/Hammersmith: Kelmscott Press, 1894. Limited First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. William Morris. Sold by William Morris at Kelmscott Press. One of 500 copies on handmade Perch paper, plus 15 on vellum. 16mo. 5¾" x 4¼" (14.5 x 10.5 cm). Bound in original quarter Holland-backed blue paper boards, with white linen spine, and title printed in black on front cover. [iv], 67, [viii] pp. Woodcut title with double-page vine-leaf border and initials throughout. Printed in red and black Chaucer type, one 13-line woodcut initial and numerous 3-line initials throughout, designed by William Morris. Pages uncut. A story taken from ?Nouvelles Françoises en prose du XIIIe siècle,? written earlier by Morris as ?Amys & Amillion? and intended at first for appearance in the second volume of 'The Earthly Paradise'. Amis and Amile were two medieval knights who were devoted friends and this is the story of their friendship which led Amile to slay his own children for the sake of his friend. Of course, this supreme sacrifice meant that the children were not dead after all. Eventually the two knights were killed in the same battle and a miracle was added to the end of the story as although they were buried apart from each other, the two coffins were found side by side the next morning. Some spotting to front board. Internally clean and tight. No ownership marks, and free from the usual spotting or foxing. Near Fine. [Peterson A23. Sparling 23.]

New York: D. Appleton and Company,, 1894. [Method and Results; Darwiniana; Science and Education; Science and Hebrew Tradition; Science and Christian Tradition; Hume; Man's Place in Nature; Discourses; Evolution and Ethics.] 9 volumes, octavo (210 x 140 mm). Contemporary red half morocco, marbled sides, raised bands, titles and decorations to compartments gilt, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. Extremities slightly rubbed, occasional minor wear to corners, margins of text blocks faintly toned. An excellent set. Author's edition, one of 1,000 numbered sets collecting works by the British biologist and science educationist Thomas Henry Huxley (1825?1895). "Huxley published over 400 essays, papers, letters, reviews, and books. Many of his papers on invertebrate anatomy and vertebrate palaeontology were amassed by Foster and Lankester into five volumes as The Scientific Memoirs of Thomas Henry Huxley (1898?1903) and Huxley had himself republished his best articles in nine volumes of Collected Essays (1893?4)?a tenth was in preparation but never appeared. For the fast wit, famous irony, suave hectoring, and commonsense cleverness in these essays, Huxley was declared 'perhaps the greatest virtuoso of plain English who has ever lived' (Fawcett, 208). With their reinterpretation of duty, belief, and morality in a secularizing, industrializing culture, they provide a partisan insight into the Victorian move to a naturalistic world-view" (ODNB).

J'Accuse...! Lettre au President de la Republique [The Dreyfus Affair]

Paris: L'Aurore. First edition, First printing. Original wrappers, custom box. Very Good. THE LEGENDARY "J'ACCUSE...!" BY EMILE ZOLA. THE ORIGINAL FIRST PRINTING, FIRST APPEARANCE OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT PUBLICATION ASSOCIATED WITH THE DREYFUS AFFAIR; A CORNERSTONE EVENT IN MODERN JEWISH AND EUROPEAN HISTORY. The Dreyfus Affair "centred on the question of the guilt or innocence of army captain Alfred Dreyfus, who had been convicted of treason for allegedly selling military secrets to the Germans in December 1894. At first the public supported the conviction; it was willing to believe in the guilt of Dreyfus, who was Jewish. Much of the early publicity surrounding the case came from anti-Semitic groups... to whom Dreyfus symbolized the supposed disloyalty of French Jews. "The effort to reverse the sentence was at first limited to members of the Dreyfus family, but, as evidence pointing to the guilt of another French officer, Ferdinand Walsin-Esterhazy, came to light from 1896, the pro-Dreyfus side slowly gained adherents... The accusations against Esterhazy resulted in a court-martial that acquitted him of treason (January 1898). To protest against the verdict, the novelist Emile Zola wrote a letter titled 'J'accuse', published in Clemenceau's newspaper L'Aurore. In it he attacked the army for covering up its mistaken conviction of Dreyfus" (Britannica). "In Paris and throughout France, the impact of 'J'accuse...!' was enormous. Anti-Semitic demonstrations took place immediately in the Latin Quarter, and the unrest increased in the two days that followed. On 17 January, 3,000 demonstrators marched through the streets of Nantes; in the next few days, the disturbances spread to as many as fifty towns and cities, among them Angers, Bordeaux, Dijon, Marseille, Nancy and Rennes, marking the beginning of what Pierre Birnbaum has called the 'anti-Semitic moment', a 'pogrom without fatalities' that continued, to varying degrees, until the summer of 1899. On 18 January, a serious outbreak of violence tool place in Algiers, where the Jewish quarter was sacked and a number of deaths were reported. 'J'accuse...!' was also the catalyst that relaunched and strengthened the Dreyfusard movement. The small core of Dreyfus' supporters regained the confidence it had lost with Esterhazy's acquittal, and the first result was the organisation of two petitions in favour of a judicial review of the Dreyfus case... Many distinguished academics ... signed the petition in the first days as did numerous writers and artists: there were finally 1,482 signatures in 38 lists... The petitions... marked the birth of the modern idea of the intellectual committed, as a member of the group, to the support of a moral or political cause" (The Cambridge Companion to Zola). "Zola was brought to trial on Feb. 7, 1898, and was sentenced to one year's imprisonment and a fine of 3,000 francs after being found guilty of libel. As a result of the new attention focused on the affair, Dreyfus underwent a new court-martial. Although still found guilty, he was pardoned by the president of the republic. Not until 1906 was Dreyfus cleared of all wrongdoing" (Britannica). The Dreyfus Affair was enormously significant in Jewish history. For Theodore Herzl, it was important in giving birth to modern Zionism. "Herzl had been present at the Dreyfus degradation on that January day, as a journalist for a Viennese paper, and if one moment engraved his sense that Jews could never find a safe home in Europe this was it: 'It has been established that justice could be refused to a Jew for the sole reason that he was a Jew.' Dreyfus, the perfect case of attempted assimilation, 'signifies a strategic position which . . . is already lost.' This insight, repeated and made programmatic in the Zionist project, was seemingly vindicated by what happened during the Second World War, when the members of the Dreyfus family, who had fought for France so often and so patriotically, were, like all French Jews, forced into hiding; Alfred's favorite granddaughter, Madeline, a Resistance fighter, was deported by the Vichy state and died at Auschwitz, age twenty-five... "The Dreyfus affair matters not because of the parallel with our time but because it was one of the first tests of modern pluralist liberalism and its institutions-a test that those institutions somehow managed to pass and fail at the same time. In France a century ago, the system finally worked, as they used to say after Watergate. The good guys rallied around, the courts did their job, Dreyfus was vindicated and came home to his family. Yet what the system exposed as it worked was, in a way, worse than the injustice it remedied. It showed that a huge number of Europeans, in a time largely smiling and prosperous, liked engaging in raw, animal religious hatred, and only felt fully alive when they did. Hatred and bigotry were not a vestige of the superstitious past but a living fire-just what comes, and burns, naturally. (Adam Gopnik, The New Yorker, September 28, 2009). IN: L'Aurore, 13 January 1898. Large (18 x 24 inches) folio; four pages (as issued); handsomely boxed. Closed tear at middle horizontal fold, some toning, light chipping to edges; stain around "J" of "J'Accuse"; remnants of early stamps. A rare survival of an extremely fragile item.

The present collection represents five of the eight short stories that appeared in The Exploits of Brigadier Gerard and an extraordinary opportunity to acquire a significant portion of one of Conan Doyle';s most impressive creations. Provenance: By descent from Herbert F. Gunnison "The Medal of Brigadier Gerard", here first titled "The Mission of Brigadier Gerard", with the word "Mission" crossed out and the word "Medal" written above, was written in 1894 and is the first short story in Conan Doyle';s Brigadier Gerard saga. In their account of Conan Doyle';s serial publications, his bibliographers Green and Gibson give both the English title "?How the Brigadier Won His Medal';", and the American title "?The Medal of the Brigadier';", as the story was originally published in the separate English and American issues of the Strand magazine in 1894. Green and Gibson also note that the first American periodical publication was by a Newspaper Syndicate [abbreviation "N.S.", G & G, p. 404], referring to the Bacheller Syndicate. As noted above, the present manuscripts were given by Bacheller to his friend and fellow journalist Herbert Foster Gunnison. Irving Bacheller (1859-1950), author, journalist and editor, began his career as a journalist in Brooklyn in 1882, but a few years later founded the first modern American newspaper syndicate, the Bacheller Syndicate, to provide literature and other articles to Sunday newspapers. Among the authors whose work he represented were Arthur Conan Doyle, Stephen Crane, Joseph Conrad, and Rudyard Kipling. In the 1890s, Bacheller began to write fiction and gave up his career in journalism to pursue literature, becoming a best-selling author with such works as Eben Holden (1900), D';ri and I (1901), The Light in the Clearing (1917), and A Man for the Ages (1920). Herbert Foster Gunnison (1858-1932) was a Brooklyn newspaperman associated with the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, where he worked from 1882, eventually becoming its President in 1924.In 1894, the indefatigable American impresario Major James Pond organized a lecture tour for Conan Doyle, who arrived in New York on October 2 and appeared in thirty cities before returning to England on December 8th. It was on this tour and in this way that Conan Doyle introduced Brigadier Gerard to the public, first in America, in advance of its periodical publication in the Strand later the same year. "Conan Doyle had read it ["?How the Brigadier Won His Medal,'; the new character';s debut"] aloud to audiences in America, whose generous responses encouraged him to think he had a success on his hands. . . . he quickly turned out another seven adventures. These also appeared in the Strand throughout 1895, and were collected in book form as The Exploits of Brigadier Gerard. Thoug [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
