        Pride and Prejudice

'The Peacock Edition' of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, with a preface by George Saintsbury. With Hugh Thomson's gorgeous peacock design blocked in gilt to the dark green cloth, and his delightful line drawings and ornamental initials throughout the text, it's easy to see why this is the most popular edition of any of Austen's works and one of the most popular books ever published. 476 pp. All edges gilt; dark green endpapers. The book is shaken with hinges cracking and guttering exposed in places. Contents mostly clean with light spotting to prelims and end-pages, and very occasionally to other pages. 1894 gift inscription to Margaret Frances Awdry (antecedent of Rev. W. V, Awdry, the Thomas the Tank Engine creator) to verso of fep. Gilt to page edges is mostly quite bright with some soiling to top, and light soiling and wear to bottom. Boards are worn with badly rubbed corners; spine tips frayed with some small losses; cloth starting to split in a few sections on joints; gilt dulled. A well-used but still highly attractive copy of this illustrated edition of Pride and Prejudice.

L.a.f., in francese, indirizzata a ''M.

The Chileans did not finally withdraw till 1885, imposing harsh terms, which helped to secure his election as President in 1886. However, his second election in August 1894 led to a rebellion, the loss of 2800 lives, and his defeat, hostilities ceasing only on the intervention of the British Consul in March 1895, when Cáceres left the country. Henry Michael [or Mitchell] Jones, of the 7th Regiment of Foot, while carrying the Queen's Colour during the Battle of the Alma, received a bullet in his jaw, which was only removed thirty years later when he complained of toothache.         Fine unsigned Tableau vivant photo showing the family dressed in period costume (Mary Victoria Feodore, 1857-1944, Princess, Daughter & Companion of Queen Victoria), ALICE (Princess, Countess of Athlone, 1883-1981, Daughter of Leopold, Duke of Albany, Grand-daughter of Queen Victoria), ALEXANDER ( Albert, Marquess of Carisbrooke, 1886-1960, Grand-son of Queen Victoria) & VICTORIA EUGÉNIE (1887-1969, daughter of Prince Henry, wife of Alfonso XIII of Spain)]

1894 - titled 'Charles I', showing the couple sitting down with their children around them, 7" x 9½", on a 14" x 10" mount, Osborne Isle of Wight, Christmas The practice of the Household performing tableau vivants over the New Year was revived some time after the death of the Prince Consort. There were normally several scenes, each representing a letter or word, followed by a final scene depicting the entire word. The Tableau often reproduced paintings - a particularly successful one being 'La Rixe' (The Brawl) after the painting by E. Meissonier which had been given to the Prince Consort in 1856. The scene was a quarrel in a tavern which Queen Victoria considered 'a truthful presentation of the picture'. They were not always so well received - a biblical tableau of Naomi and Ruth in 1888 was described by the Queen as 'not quite so successful as it might have been, owing to the ladies getting the giggles and shaking'. The Tableau Vivant photo is an unusual form of photography, which Queen Victoria had a passion for from the 1850s. This is one of the later ones which are more difficult to find as the majority of them have remained in Royal Collections. Princesses Helena Victoria and Marie Louise spent much of their year revolved around the Queen, which dates the picture to 1889 as the Princess Marie Louise was married to a German Prince the following year. The marriage did not prove happy and the Queen sent her an open telegram ordering her 'home to me'.

        Aristophanes at Oxford O W

Oxford: J. Vincent,; London: Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent & Co.,, 1894. Octavo. Original skiver-covered wrappers, titles to front wrapper in green. Housed in navy morocco backed bookform slipcase and chemise. Front joint just starting and the spine just beginning to separate at the head, otherwise only light rubbing to the extremities and some mild dust soiling, internally sound and fresh, very good condition indeed. First edition, sole printing, one of 750 copies printed, of this Oxford play satirising Oscar Wilde. "The motive of this production... is an honest dislike for 'Dorian Gray,' 'Salome,' the 'Yellow Book,' and the whole of the erotic, lack-a-daisical, opium-cigarette literature of the day", the student-authors write in their preface, though they confess "We have never met the philosopher in question personally, or seen anything more of him than a distant back-view, and even that obscured by a throng of admiring Adonises." The play is considered a significant analogue for Wildean studies, and as such is represented strongly in institutions: 4 copies in are recorded in UK institutions, 35 in the United States, and one in Dublin. It is however (no doubt because many of the surviving copies of this relatively ephemeral production have been assumed into special collections) rare in the trade - the last copy to appear at auction was in 1982.

ORIGINAL ETCHED PORTRAIT OF THOMAS HARDY (Signed By the Artist William Strang, HARDY'S PERSONAL COPY INSCRIBED BY HIM TO HIS CLOSE FRIEND EDMUND GOSSE]

1894. [Hardy, Thomas]. Strang, William, artist. ORIGINAL ETCHED PORTRAIT OF THOMAS HARDY, signed W. Strang in the plate and Wm. Strang in pencil in the margin beneath the image [1894]. 15 x 10 cm (image) on a 24 x 19 cm sheet. One of the iconic portraits of Thomas Hardy by the painter and printmaker, William Strang (1859-1921). What makes this example extraordinary is Hardy's presentation inscription to his close (if not closest) friend Edmund Gosse: inscribed in pencil in the lower margin "Thomas Hardy / to / Edmund Gosse." Sir Edmund Gosse (1849-1928) was a highly respected poet and critic, today best known perhaps for his powerful 1907 memoir FATHER AND SON (adapted in 1976 for BBC2 television by Dennis Potter). Hardy had very few close male friends during the course of his life and after the death of Horace Moule in 1873 (Moule's suicide seems to us quite clearly to have been the defining event which darkened the coloration of Hardy's fiction forever), it seems safe to say that Gosse was also his closest confident until both men met their death within four months of each other in 1928. This etching was surely Hardy's own example and its presentation to Gosse gives credence to the notion that this particular image was one of Hardy's personal favorites. Hardy was an occasionally willing signer of photographic portraits of himself. But this particular artist-signed etching, inscribed by Hardy to the man closest to him, stands alone in its desirability. The etching is loosely affixed with archival tape inside an acid-free mount and apart from a few apparently organic wrinkles to the paper it is in fine condition. . Inscribed By Author. Illus. by Strang, William.

Speeches of the Marquis of Lansdowne, Viceroy and Governor General of India.

Calcutta: Office of the Superintendent of Government Printing India, 1894 - 2 volumes, octavo ( 212 x 131 mm). Contemporary (almost certainly "native") brown morocco, spines with decorative gilt roll tool at head and tail, gilt ruled either side of the raised bands and roll tooled on the bands themselves, sides with concentric gilt panels, gilt Lansdowne arms on front covers, gilt roll tool turn-ins, brown coated endpapers. Covers of volume I just slightly sprung. An excellent set, unopened in places. First and only edition, one of 110 copies, rare: among British and Irish institutional libraries Copac locates only the copy at the British Library; OCLC adds a single copy worldwide, at Bibliothèque de documentation internationale contemporaine at Nanterre (described in a note as "Rel. arm." - presumably "reliure armorial" - i.e. an armorial binding like ours). The printer's note at the end of volume II reads: "G.I.C.P.O. – No. 72 P.S. to V. – 15.2.94 – 110": Government of India Central Printing Office, the date and the number of copies printed (110). This collection of speeches, given while Lansdowne (1845-1927) was governor-general of India (1888-1894), was almost certainly a valedictory publication commemorating the conclusion of his tenure in office, and intended for presentation to a select coterie of friends and officials. In subject matter they range widely from addresses to such bodies as the Bombay School of Art, Mahomedan Literary Society and chambers of commerce, by way of various unveilings, banquets, and durbars, to the opening of hospitals, colleges, water works, and railways. Riddick sums up succinctly the highpoints of his career in India:"[Lansdowne] concluded a boundary settlement with Afghanistan, put down a minor rebellion at Manipur, and ably handled problems regarding Indian currency and control of opium". His speeches give a fascinating insight into the duties of a British viceroy during the heyday of the Raj. "With its remarkable combination of popular, patrician, and imperial elements, his career graphically symbolized the significant political role played by Britain's old aristocracy until well into the twentieth century" (ODNB).

Sampson Low, Marston, & Co. 1894 Contemp. full red morocco, elaborate gilt borders & dentelles, raised bands, gilt compartments. Presentation inscription on original publisher's f.e.p. bound in opposite title: 'To the hero of many adventures [surpassing any accounted here] this book from his affectionate R.D. Blackmore. August 16th, 1894'. Bookplate of Alfredo Pinto Leite. a.e.g. Fine.Sadleir 230; Wolff 529:the first one-volume edition was published simultaneously with the three-volume edition. It seems likely that this was presented in the original publisher's cloth binding and immediately rebound preserving the inscription on the verso of the original free end paper. Sadleir records three copies, all of which had been in the possession of Blackmore's niece, Eva Pinto Leite. Alfredo Pinto Leite, a Portuguese wine merchant, was married to Agnes Maguire, the sister of Blackmore's wife Lucy. They had four children before Agnes died leaving Blackmore and Lucy (who were childless) to adopt the Pinto Leite children as a surrogate family.

Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám, the Astronomer Poet of Persia. Rendered into English Verse by Edward Fitzgerald. With an accompaniment of drawings by Elihu Vedder.

      - Boston: Houghton Mifflin at the Riverside Press, 1894. 8vo., [59] photo-lithographed plates (including frontis, title and dedication plates), followed by 61 pp. of text. all on folded pages. Elaborately gilt-stamped brown cloth, gilt title to backstrip, floral endpapers also by Vedder, top-edge gilt. Binding slightly rubbed at edges, minor fraying at corners, internally bright; very good. Gift inscription in ink on recto of frontis, "To Father from George, Annie and Florence. Christmas 1902." Sweet poem written in contemporary manuscript hand by John W. Chadwick slipped in. This edition first published in 1884. The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám is said to be one of the ten best known poems in the world, and probably the most popular piece of Middle Eastern literature in the Western World. There are hundreds of editions published from Fitzgerald's various translations alone. American symbolist artist Elihu Vedder (1836-1923) is best known for his illustrations of the Rubáiyát. Vedder met a number of Pre-Raphaelite painters while visiting London in 1876, and attended an exhibition of William Blake's work at the Burlington Club. Blake's influence can be seen in Vedder's idealized human forms. He is also known for his mural work in Collis P. Huntington's mansion, the Walker Art Gallery at Bowdoin College, and the Library of Congress. Vedder's illustrations for the Rubáiyát were some of the earliest examples of Art Nouveau in America. This first Houghton Mifflin edition was so popular it sold out in just six days. (See Stillman, and ANB). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

"William Bateson read the newly discovered paper [by Mendel] and recognized immediately its relevance to the unsolved problem expounded in his Materials for the Study of Variation. variation is the cause of the evolution of species; but what causes variation, and how does it happen? Bateson was convinced that species evolve as the result of the accumulation of innumerable small changes. His view was that variations occur suddenly and discontinuously. Mendel's paper gave him the clue that he was seeking. [Bateson] became the founder of the modern study of heredity and variation for which he adopted the term 'genetics'" (Printing and the Mind of Man).         The New Will: "Everything to My Wife Absolutely"

1894. "Everything to My Wife" Sadler, Walter Dendy, After. James Dobie, Engraver. The New Will: "Everything to My Wife Absolutely." London, Paris & New York: Rafael Tuck & Sons Ltd, [c. 1894]. Attractively glazed and double-matted 19" x 16" hand-colored etching in handsome 29" x 26" wooden frame, small brass plaque to center of bottom. Light rubbing to frame, some toning to margins and mat, image vivid. $1,500. * This piece depicts a presumably newlywed couple reviewing the terms of the husband's will with a barrister in his office. The caption reads "The New Will (Everything to My Wife Absolutely." This is an ambiguous scene. The husband, who appears somewhat smug, is significantly older than the wife, who looks rather sad. The barrister appears skeptical. Does the bride regret her choice to marry for money? Was she compelled to enter this union? Is the husband a dying man?
