        The Problem aof Manflight.

Boston, Mass: W. B. Clarke & Co.,, 1894. Octavo. Original wrappers, titles and an illustrations printed in black to front wrapper. Illustrated plate and several vignettes in the text. Pencilled line of music to margin of page 5. Small chip to front wrapper fore-edge, some very light dust soiling, internally sound and fresh, excellent condition. First edition, first printing, rare presentation copy inscribed, "H. L. Mason, esq, with the regards of James Means" to the front wrapper. James Means was an industrialist from Dorchester MA who left his shoe manufacturing business to focus on the new and exciting field of aviation. He published the Aeronautical Annuals of 1895-7 with the hopes that the material printed there would inspire others to investigate and advance the field. This pamphlet includes a design for a soaring machine which could be used by readers to conduct flying experiments. In 1894, when this was published, the future of aviation was far from assured - but Means had faith, finishing his text with the line "Aerial transit will be accomplished because the air is a solid if you hit it hard enough." Means's works "had a significant impact. Orville Wright, writing as the Wright Brothers, sent a letter to James Means in 1910 acknowledging the part that the Aeronautical Annuals had played in spurring and sustaining their interest in aeronautics... The devotion which James Means had to encouraging aerial experimentation and to documenting the work of others, as well as his own, has secured him a place of importance and respect among those who have pondered the history of flight." ( The pamphlet is well represented institutionally, but is scarce in the trade, and rare inscribed.

      - Ferguson 341; Saalmink, p. 2189; cf. Hill 1894; Howgego, to 1800, W42; O'Reilly & Reitmann 674-692a. Original Dutch edition of William Wilson's account of the first English missionary voyage to the Pacific (1796-1798). The voyage was sponsored by the London Missionary Society for the purpose of establishing a mission in Tahiti. James Wilson, an ex-East India Captain and nephew of the author, was put in command of the Duff, which left the Thames in August 1796, bound for Tahiti. En route Wilson discovered the Gambier Islands, in French Polynesia. In Tahiti a small settlement was formed and befriended by the king of the island, Pomare I, but within two years many of the settlers had made themselves unpopular, and were subsequently sent off the island, fleeing to Sydney.Apart from the missionary interest, the work contains many valuable details about Tahiti, the Fiji Islands, Tongatapu, the Marquesas, and the newly discovered Duff Group. On the outward voyage, the expedition visited Rio de Janeiro, of which a short account is also included. The evocative plates include a view of Rio de Janeiro, several views of Tahiti, as well as a depiction of a cemetery in Tongatapu. Some spotting. Top of spine of second volume damaged. Very good set.

Buenos Aires: Jacob Peuser 1894 - Chromolithograph, dissected into 32 sections and mounted upon original linen, folding into original black cloth covers with title blind-stamped in gilt to front cover (Very Good, map clean and sharp, with some light, neat contemporary manuscript additions in pencil to central area, cover with a little edge-wear and fraying to spine), 59 x 83 cm (23 x 32.5 inches). The rare separately issued first edition of the first scientific cadastral survey of the Gran Chaco region of Northern Argentina, by the esteemed Uruguayan surveyor Melitón González, published in Buenos Aires. This attractive and historically important map is the first scientifically accurate cadastral survey of the Gran Chaco region of Northern Argentina, depicting copious amounts of information related to recent settlement activities. It is predicated on the mapping conducted by the Uruguayan surveyor Melitón González, and published in Buenos Aires in 1894 during a critical period in the area’s early development. The finely chromolithographed map depicts the recently incorporated territories of Chaco and Formosa, featuring the locations of towns, forts and outposts, as well as numbered settlement sections and departmental and territorial boundaries. Of particular interest are the numerous cadastral lots owned by named individual proprietors and land development companies. This information reveals the demographically diverse nature of the settlements, including names of Spanish, Italian, Jewish, British and German origins, amongst others. It is thus one of the seminal historical documents relating to Northern Argentina. The Development of the Argentinian Gran Chaco - The Argentinian part of the Gran Chaco was historically a sparsely populated region, originally home to the Pilagás, Wichis and Tobas native peoples, and from the late 16th Century the site of a few isolated Jesuit missions and European trading posts. Before modern farming techniques, broad-based development of the region was considered nearly impossible due to the arid conditions, indifferent soil and complex relations with the native peoples. During much of the 19th Century, settlement was further hindered by the fact that the region was actively disputed between Argentina and Paraguay. Argentina and her allies annihilated Paraguay during the War of the Triple Alliance (1865-70), with Argentina being awarded all of the land south of the Pilcomayo River. In 1872, Argentina formed its enlarged domains in the region into the Gran Chaco Territory, and opened the area for development. Many settlement schemes, or ‘colonias’ were established, while the city of Resistencia was founded at the site of the fort of San Fernando in 1876, and the city of Formosa was established in 1879. A diverse array of immigrants flooded into the region from Europe, in addition to experienced ranchers from the Pampas, bringing with them knowledge of advanced agrarian techniques that made the Gran Chaco economically viable. In 1884, the territory was divided along the Bermejo River into the separate territories of Chaco and Formosa. Until the mid-1880s, the mapping of the region was of variable quality, as while some fine cadastral surveys of specific grants were made, there were no general maps of any decent quality. This was causing great confusion with the awarding of land grants and the creation of infrastructure. To remedy the situation, the Argentine government commissioned Melitón González, an Uruguayan surveyor and development planner, to create the first scientific cadastral map of the Argentinian Gran Chaco. Commensurate with his surveys, González wrote a book on the region, El Gran Chaco Argentino (Buenos Aires, 1890). This was followed, in 1894, by the separate publication of the present map, finely chromolithographed by the leading Buenos Aires firm of Jacob Peuser. Some copies of El Gran Chaco Argentino that were issued after this time had examples of the map bound in, although the separately issued edition of the ma

Of the Friendship of Amis and Amile Done out of the Ancient French into English by William Morris

London/Hammersmith: Kelmscott Press, 1894. Limited First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. William Morris. Sold by William Morris at Kelmscott Press. One of 500 copies on handmade Perch paper, plus 15 on vellum. 16mo. 5¾" x 4¼" (14.5 x 10.5 cm). Bound in original quarter Holland-backed blue paper boards, with white linen spine, and title printed in black on front cover. [iv], 67, [viii] pp. Woodcut title with double-page vine-leaf border and initials throughout. Printed in red and black Chaucer type, one 13-line woodcut initial and numerous 3-line initials throughout, designed by William Morris. Pages uncut. A story taken from ?Nouvelles Françoises en prose du XIIIe siècle,? written earlier by Morris as ?Amys & Amillion? and intended at first for appearance in the second volume of 'The Earthly Paradise'. Amis and Amile were two medieval knights who were devoted friends and this is the story of their friendship which led Amile to slay his own children for the sake of his friend. Of course, this supreme sacrifice meant that the children were not dead after all. Eventually the two knights were killed in the same battle and a miracle was added to the end of the story as although they were buried apart from each other, the two coffins were found side by side the next morning. Some spotting to front board. Internally clean and tight. No ownership marks, and free from the usual spotting or foxing. Near Fine. [Peterson A23. Sparling 23.]
