The Jungle Book and The Second Jungle Book

London: Macmillan and Co., 1894-1895 Two volumes. First editions, first printings. The Jungle Book (1894) is illustrated by John Lockwood Kipling, William Henry Drake, and Paul Frenzeny. The Second Jungle Book (1895) is illustrated by John Lockwood Kipling. Both volumes bound in the publisher's navy cloth, spines lettered in gilt, pictorial jungle images based on artwork by the author's father John Lockwood Kipling stamped to the front boards in gilt, all edges gilt, green-gray coated endpapers. Very good or better, with leans to the spines, light rubbing to the spine ends, corners lightly bumped, faint soiling to the boards, Jungle Book with a former owner's 1894 inscription to a front flyleaf, Second Jungle Book with a subscription library bookplate to the front pastedown and a few faint spots to the endleaves, otherwise clean pages. Overall, a very attractive set. The Jungle Books are collections of short stories and verses, the most famous of which relate to the feral child protagonist Mowgli, a "man cub." While they can be read independently of each other, each chapter serves as a fable using animal figures to provide a moral lesson. In each volume, the short stories are both preceded and followed by poems or songs, including the notable "Mowgli's Song" and "The Law of the Jungle." The Jungle Books, based on the author's childhood and later work experience in British India, are indicative of Western Orientalist ideology at the turn of the 20th century, which is somewhat softened by Kipling's fondness for his former home. Both Jungle Books are illustrated by the author's father, John Lockwood Kipling, who was a practicing illustrator and art professor in Bombay.. Illus. by Kipling, John Lockwood. 1st Edition.. Hard Cover. Very Good.

        Autoportrait original

Signed official manuscript from the Viceroy of India, Lord Elgin, to the Begum of Bhopal, 1894

Govt of India, Fort William, Calcutta India 1894 - .A letter written by secretarial hand in palace script on two sides of a bifolium headed with the royal arms embossed in gold, addressed to "Her Highness Nawab Shah Jahan Begam, G.C.S.I.,C.I., of Bhopal" signed "Elgin" Viceroy and Governor General of India, dated Fort William, 8th February 1894. The letter is stab sewn into a simple card folder with some eight pages of untranslated letters in Persian script [these are probably copies of letters sent by the Begum and translations of replies: one is signed and stamped "Political Agent in Bhopal"]. The letter, which begins "My Esteemed Friend", is a fairly formal introductory letter saying that Elgin took over his office [from the Marquis of Lansdowne] on 27th January and that he hopes to take a great interest in the Begum's state. Although such letters would have been sent to all the senior states they seldom come on the market and this one is unique in being addressed to the only female ruler of an Indian state in her own right.         Death Valley in '49. An important chapter in California pioneer history … with foreword by John Steven McGroarty

New York, Santa Barbara: Wallace Hebberd, 1894. Reprint. Illustrated by Alson Clark. [xiv], [524] pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Green cloth. Near Fine. Bookplate of Edward Borein, reproducing one of his drawings. Reprint. Illustrated by Alson Clark. [xiv], [524] pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Inscribed to Western Artist John Edward Borein. Ffep inscribed: "To Ed Borein / Who is leaving a true picture of the West for future posterity by his skill in producing etchings of actual happenings. / Dwight Murphy." Murphy was a noted rancher and breeder of palomino horses. He owned 7,000 acres of Snata Barbara's Rancho San Marcos. John Edward Borein (1872-1945), son of a California deputy sheriff, was sketching Western subjects at the age of five. Encouraged by his family to become an artist, he matriculated at a San Francisco art school, but left after a month to work as a cowboy. In this pursuit he became highly proficient, although, encouraged by his awed fellow cowhands, he continued to draw and sketch in his spare time and, in 1896, began to see his work in print. He eventually developed an enviable competence as a watercolorist, but gave up painting in oils when he compared his work--unfavorably--with that of his friend Charles M. Russell. In 1906 Borein moved to New York to work as an illustrator, and studied etching--which would become a speciality--at the Art Students' League. It was this which set him apart from his peers in Western art, and nearly 400 of his etchings are recorded. Seeped in the history and allurements of the West, he returned to California permanently in 1919, and it is to his native state that much of his work relates. By the 1930s his watercolors, produced with sparkling, vivid colors and conveying a flavor of authenticity without pretension, were enormously popular; they number over 1,000 examples. He is known as an artist "who got the details right" and his readily identifiable personal style sets him apart from others who depict the landscapes, the inhabitants, the history, and the sun-drenched aridity of the American West.
