Cubery & Co n.d., ca. 1894, San Francisco - Flyer for the People's Party, a populist agrarian political party founded in 1891 which merged with the Democratic Party in 1896. Mrs. Carrie F. Young appears to have begun her political career in the early 1880s as a member and lecturer of the Oakland Health and Temperance Club and superintendent of the Scientific Temperance Instruction in the Public Schools of Alameda County. First mention of Young lecturing for the People's Party appears to date around 1894, when she delivered an address on white slavery at a Populist ratification meeting in June, 1894 (see the San Francisco Call, June 24, 1894). Uncommon broadside: OCLC locates one copy as of September, 2016, at Berkeley, giving the date as 1892. Original broadside flyer (30x45cm.) printed in black on off-white stock; faint vertical fold, stock rather brittle and uniformly toned due to poor paper quality, several shallow losses along extremities, none approaching text. Near Very Good overall. [Attributes: First Edition]

Leipsic Karl Baedeker 1894 - Second edition. cxx, 444pp, 17 maps, 44 plans and a panorama of Jerusalem, publisher's red cloth gilt, slightly worn in parts ( 2 tiny holes on upper cover) ; a very good copy. In this edition the views have been eliminated except for the attractive folding panorama of Jerusalem. This is the famous edition which gave rise to a lawsuit brought by Howard ( a hotel owner in Jaffa and Jerusalem) against Baedeker with reference to some disparaging remarks in this volume about his hotels. Howard won the lawsuit and Baedeker was ordered to remove the critical comments. However in the next edition Howard's hotels were omitted and his business suffered greatly as a result.

Prijs: ?1.250,- (incl. lijst, BTW margeregeling).

Cairo, Imprimerie Nationale, 1894. - 8vo. With 19 plates with reproductions of photographs. Modern green cloth. First and only edition of a report on the pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina written by the Egyptian doctor Saleh Soubhy. Soubhy worked as a health inspector at Cairo, and was appointed by khedive Abbas Hilmi II (1874-1944) to investigate the sanitary conditions of the Egyptian pilgrimage caravan to Mecca and Medina. Soubhy travelled to the Hijaz in 1888 and 1892, and published his experiences in the present work. "The French-educated doctor, Soubhy, wrote for a foreign audience in order to show both the sanctity and orderliness of the Hajj, regulated by quarantines and public health measures through which a great number of pilgrims flowed" (Sheehi). With this work, "a carefully composed defense of Islam" (Marmon), Soubhy also tried to portray Islam is as an acceptable religion to his European colleagues. The book also includes some important early photographs of Mecca and Medina, taken by Muhammad Saduq Bey (1832-1902), the first to photograph the holy cities, and al-Sayyid 'Abd al-Ghaffar (active 1880's). - With a bookplate on paste-down. Upper outer corner of half-title restored, tiny piece of the same corner torn off from the title-page, browned throughout, half-title smudged, and a few plates slightly thumbed, otherwise in good condition.         Belle & the Dragon

James Elliott & Co, London, 1894 First edition, first impression.Large octavo. Original brown cloth, decoration and titles to upper board elaborately blocked in silver, titles to spine gilt, top edge gilt others uncut.Browning to first and last leaves, corners lightly bumped but a stunning copy of a tremendous book. One of a number of fantastical works put out by Waite in the 1890s. These stories form an important adjunct to his notable and often definitional studies of ancient ritualism and those more contemporary occultist movements with which he associated. That apart, this marvellous publication stands on merit purely as a book of fantasy. Exceedingly scarce.[53]

Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám, the Astronomer Poet of Persia. Rendered into English Verse by Edward Fitzgerald. With an accompaniment of drawings by Elihu Vedder.

8vo. Boston: Houghton Mifflin at the Riverside Press, 1894. 8vo., [59] photo-lithographed plates (including frontis, title and dedication plates), followed by 61 pp. of text. all on folded pages. Elaborately gilt-stamped brown cloth, gilt title to backstrip, floral endpapers also by Vedder, top-edge gilt. Binding slightly rubbed at edges, minor fraying at corners, internally bright; very good. Gift inscription in ink on recto of frontis, “To Father from George, Annie and Florence. Christmas 1902.” Sweet poem written in contemporary manuscript hand by John W. Chadwick slipped in. This edition first published in 1884. The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám is said to be one of the ten best known poems in the world, and probably the most popular piece of Middle Eastern literature in the Western World. There are hundreds of editions published from Fitzgerald’s various translations alone. American symbolist artist Elihu Vedder (1836-1923) is best known for his illustrations of the Rubáiyát. Vedder met a number of Pre-Raphaelite painters while visiting London in 1876, and attended an exhibition of William Blake’s work at the Burlington Club. Blake’s influence can be seen in Vedder’s idealized human forms. He is also known for his mural work in Collis P. Huntington’s mansion, the Walker Art Gallery at Bowdoin College, and the Library of Congress. Vedder’s illustrations for the Rubáiyát were some of the earliest examples of Art Nouveau in America. This first Houghton Mifflin edition was so popular it sold out in just six days. (See Stillman, and ANB).

Speeches of the Marquis of Lansdowne, Viceroy and Governor General of India.

Calcutta: Office of the Superintendent of Government Printing India,, 1894. 2 volumes, octavo ( 212 x 131 mm). Contemporary (almost certainly "native") brown morocco, spines with decorative gilt roll tool at head and tail, gilt ruled either side of the raised bands and roll tooled on the bands themselves, sides with concentric gilt panels, gilt Lansdowne arms on front covers, gilt roll tool turn-ins, brown coated endpapers. Covers of volume I just slightly sprung. An excellent set, unopened in places. First and only edition, one of 110 copies, rare: among British and Irish institutional libraries Copac locates only the copy at the British Library; OCLC adds a single copy worldwide, at Bibliothèque de documentation internationale contemporaine at Nanterre (described in a note as "Rel. arm." - presumably "reliure armorial" - i.e. an armorial binding like ours). The printer's note at the end of volume II reads: "G.I.C.P.O. – No. 72 P.S. to V. – 15.2.94 – 110": Government of India Central Printing Office, the date and the number of copies printed (110). This collection of speeches, given while Lansdowne (1845-1927) was governor-general of India (1888-1894), was almost certainly a valedictory publication commemorating the conclusion of his tenure in office, and intended for presentation to a select coterie of friends and officials. In subject matter they range widely from addresses to such bodies as the Bombay School of Art, Mahomedan Literary Society and chambers of commerce, by way of various unveilings, banquets, and durbars, to the opening of hospitals, colleges, water works, and railways. Riddick sums up succinctly the highpoints of his career in India:"[Lansdowne] concluded a boundary settlement with Afghanistan, put down a minor rebellion at Manipur, and ably handled problems regarding Indian currency and control of opium". His speeches give a fascinating insight into the duties of a British viceroy during the heyday of the Raj. "With its remarkable combination of popular, patrician, and imperial elements, his career graphically symbolized the significant political role played by Britain's old aristocracy until well into the twentieth century" (ODNB).

"William Bateson read the newly discovered paper [by Mendel] and recognized immediately its relevance to the unsolved problem expounded in his Materials for the Study of Variation... variation is the cause of the evolution of species; but what causes variation, and how does it happen? Bateson was convinced that species evolve as the result of the accumulation of innumerable small changes. His view was that variations occur suddenly and discontinuously. Mendel's paper gave him the clue that he was seeking... [Bateson] became the founder of the modern study of heredity and variation for which he adopted the term 'genetics'" (Printing and the Mind of Man).
