Oblong album (25 x 34 cm) with 47 silver gelatin photographic prints, many with handwritten captions in French. The photographs vary in size from 8 x 5.5 cm to 27 x 20.5 cm. The 30 panorama photographs measure 5.5 x 17.5 cm. Brown cloth album made by M. Andouard in Paris, with decorated endpapers.

      - A unique set of views from Zanzibar and Madagascar, taken five years after the French military intervention of 1894/95, also called the Second Madagascar expedition. The unidentified photographer can be seen in three of the photographs, wearing a white coat and white pith sun helmet. This was the French tropical style as used by white colonial troops since 1878, suggesting his involvement in the French colonial army. His travel partner is occasionally shown as well. Their visit took place during the final years of Tippu Tip's (1837-1905) notorious slave trading activities in Zanzibar.The photo album opens with a portrait of a young Sakalavan woman in a beautiful dress. Three other photographs show other native women as well, including one family with a baby. The majority of the photographs are panoramic views, showing villages, harbours, coasts and landscapes, the first dated 28 November 1900. The only full-page photograph in the album shows an Arab caravan marching along the beach. Rare are the few photographs taken in Mayotte, giving some highly uncommon scenes of the island nation's pre-development era. Binding somewhat scratched, spine slightly worn. The front endpaper clipped. Only a few photographs slightly faded: in very good condition.

Original blue cloth, spines lettered in gilt, covers blocked in blind; pp. [iv], 225, [3, blank], 8 (advertisements, dated October, 1894); [iv], 215, (8, advertisements); [iv], 225, [3, blank], (8, advertisements); apart from light rubbing to extremities and the occasional spotting to text a very good copy. Extremely rare first edition and a completely overlooked Victorian triple-decker novel by a woman, published under a male pseudonym. The Eccentrics is fortunate in that the title describes not only the main characters of the novel, but also the setting, prose and probably the author, though little public knowledge is available regarding her. In a wonderfully and needlessly dramatic fashion, the story is a classic tale woven of family intrigue, fainting ladies and dark inheritances. Perhaps a mark of a canny eye for satire, or perhaps just a mark of a severe talent deficit - regardless, the prose is as amusing as it is oddly gripping. "Let me pass!" cried Bertha, "I am going to the ballroom!" "Bertha, my dear girl," Renà e put her white hand with soft magnetic touch upon Betty's arm, - "tell me." "I worship him," Betty whispered hoarsely, looking directly into Renà e's grey mesmeric eyes. Typical of novels contemporary to it, the main topic of discussion throughout the volumes is the possibility of marriage for the female protagonists, and how to attract the attentions of the men they desire. The men, however, spend their time threatening to engage in civilised fisticuffs, and glowering at each other, before swooping in to save the heroines from certain death when the hour is most bleak. Perhaps not the most politically correct offering on the market, but a compelling and rare one. This novel is indeed very aesthetic movement, with Moorish lamps burning in open doorways and Renà e sheltering her agitated face with an ibis fan. Subtexts might be discovered by the reader of the book, which towards the end and after a marriage hints that 'when people talk of Mordant's marriage, the ladies bewail his alliance with so masculine a woman, who answers the description of his comrade more than of his wife. The men blame him severly, on the other hand, for his reckless exposing of the woman he pretends to love to so many hardships, and the way in which he denies her luxuries of her staion in the county'.       London: Longmans, Green, and Co.,, 1894. A Narrative of Count Samuel Teleki's Exploring & Hunting Expedition in Eastern Equatorial Africa in 1887 & 1888. By his Companion. Translated by Nancy Bell (N. D'Anvers). 2 volumes, octavo. Original brown diagonal-ribbed cloth, spines lettered and decorated in gilt, blind rules to boards enclosing gilt vignette of native tribesmen to front, black endpapers, edges untrimmed. Wood-engraved frontispiece to vol. 1, map frontispiece to vol. 2, numerous illustrations to the text of which 32 full-page, mostly wood-engravings from photographs, 2 large folding colour maps linen-back at stub as issued. Bookplate of Alpheus Fuller Williams (1874-1953), noted American-born South African mining engineer, to front pastedowns. Headcaps and tips refurbished, faint marking to vol. 2 spine, a few other trivial marks to sides, light bumping to board-edges, very occasional mild foxing. A very good copy. First edition in English of this "excellent work of exploration and sport … African adventure at its finest" (Czech), noted for describing the European discovery of Lake Turkana, "the last of the great lakes of Africa to be discovered" (Howgego). Hungarian nobleman Samuel Teleki (1845-1916) developed an interest in visiting the region north of Lake Baringo in what is now Kenya after learning of Joseph Thomson's expedition, which reported the supposed existence of a large haunted lake further north. He was encouraged by Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria to turn an intended safari into a journey of exploration, and von Höhnel, a naval officer "would equip and arm the expedition to the highest standards, money being no object" (ibid.) The party arrived in Zanzibar late in 1886, crossed to Pangani in January the following year and reached the foothills of Kilimanjaro by June, making an assault on the summit in which Teleki reached a height of 5300 metres (von Höhnel turned back after 4950). They continued north along Thomson's route through the Masai and Kikuyu homelands, though unlike Thomson showed little respect for local customs and endured many skirmishes with Kikuyu tribesmen. They reached Lake Baringo in February 1888, and Lake Turkana the month after. Returning via Baringo, they followed the Rift Valley and passed the future site of Nairobi, arriving back at Mombasa in October with over 400 ethnographic objects and a large collection of plant and animal specimens. Von Höhnel's account was first published in a two-volume German edition between 1891 and 1892. This English translation is also encountered in blue cloth, with no priority assigned. Many of the numerous original photographs taken by Teleki and von Höhnel are believed to have been destroyed during the Second World War, so are only preserved by the line-drawings in the published account.

Chromolithographed pictorial covers, die-cut in the shape of a young American Indian boy wearing a feathered headdress. Unpaginated, (12pp.) plus wrappers. There is one double-page and two single-page chromolithographs to illustrate this poem "about an Indian Brave." There are sepia drawings on all text pages. The condition of this book is incredible. The only flaws that keep this book from being graded Mint, As New are a light pencil inscription on the inside of the front cover, reading "Merry Christmas, to Calvin from, Grama, 1894" and an area on the double-page illustration where the image stuck together and lifted a little bit of the paper. This book is Very Fine. One would be hardpressed to conceive of another copy of this book that has survived in this condition. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Elaborately gilt-stamped brown cloth, gilt title to backstrip, floral endpapers also by Vedder, top-edge gilt. Binding slightly rubbed at edges, minor fraying at corners, internally bright; very good. Gift inscription in ink on recto of frontis, “To Father from George, Annie and Florence. Christmas 1902.” Sweet poem written in contemporary manuscript hand by John W. Chadwick slipped in. This edition first published in 1884. The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám is said to be one of the ten best known poems in the world, and probably the most popular piece of Middle Eastern literature in the Western World. There are hundreds of editions published from Fitzgerald’s various translations alone. American symbolist artist Elihu Vedder (1836-1923) is best known for his illustrations of the Rubáiyát. Vedder met a number of Pre-Raphaelite painters while visiting London in 1876, and attended an exhibition of William Blake’s work at the Burlington Club. Blake’s influence can be seen in Vedder’s idealized human forms. He is also known for his mural work in Collis P. Huntington’s mansion, the Walker Art Gallery at Bowdoin College, and the Library of Congress. Vedder’s illustrations for the Rubáiyát were some of the earliest examples of Art Nouveau in America. This first Houghton Mifflin edition was so popular it sold out in just six days. (See Stillman, and ANB).

Galusha Pennypacker (1844-1916) was a Union general during the War Between the States. He is to this day the youngest person to hold the rank of brigadier general in the U.S.Army and the only general too young to vote for the president who appointed him (or anybody else, for that matter.) A letter dating from the birth year of motion picture exhibition, from the inventor of the medium, Edison, to one of the first motion picture distributors and producers, Norman C. Raff, mentioning a third important figure in the history of film, Otway Latham. In full: "My Dear Raff- I have had a long talk with Latham on the subject of prize f[ight] machines and while I do not know your ideas on the subject It seems to me that if both L & yourself could enter into some understanding mutually beneficial it would be a good stroke, and stop friction all around. Yours Edison" Norman C. Raff (1857-1925) provided a crucial early investment in film when he purchased in 1894 a number of Kinetoscope machines, or "peep-show" boxes, developed by Edison to exhibit his new motion picture technology. In April of that same year he helped open the first Kinetoscope parlour, on lower Broadway in Manhattan, to enormous success. A few months later, Otway Latham (1868-1906) made a crucial technological advancement, increasing the Kinetscope's capacity and reducing the camera speed such that he could exhibit boxing matches through a series of abbreviated, one-minute rounds using specially modified Kinetoscope machines, the "p[rize] fight machines" Edison refers to in the letter. The first fight produced by Latham, between Brooklyn boxers Mike Leonard and Jack Cushing, was recorded in the summer of 1894 at Edison's Black Maria film studio in West Orange, New Jersey; its exhibition that August, in a New York Kinetoscope parlour partly owned by Raff, "drew almost riotous crowds for many days on end, and the police had to be called in to keep order" (Josephson p 395). The success of the film led to Latham purchasing 72 additional Kinetoscope machines at $300 each--a subject that no doubt arose during the course of the "long talk" Edison references in the letter. Sources of the "friction" Edison alludes to would have included Edison's agreeing to sell the prize fight machines to Latham's group exclusively, as well as Raff incorporating as "The Kinetoscope Company," after Latham's group had already been operating as "The Kinetoscope Exhibiting Company." The same month this letter was written, Raff began in earnest to produce films at the Black Maria, including his famous "Joan of Arc" and "The Execution of Mary, Queen of Scots." The next year Latham would develop the Panoptikon and the Eidoloscope, the first motion picture projectors used to show commercial films, which would ultimately render the Kinetoscope obsolete. These and related efforts by Edison, Raff, Latham and a small number of others in 1894 to develop and exhibit Kinetoscope films were of utmost importance to the development of film, as they demonstrated an enormous public appetite for the medium, the ultimate effect of which is difficult to overstate: "The impact that this new entertainment medium was to have upon the minds and lives of hundreds of millions throughout the world was something unforeseen and unimagined-perhaps surpassing the effect of almost all other nineteenth-century inventions, by Edison or anyone else" (Josephson p 395). En 1867, il est nommé médecin en chef de la division des hommes de l'asile Sainte-Anne, à son ouverture. Là, avec Prosper Lucas, Valentin Magnan et Gustave Bouchereau, il organisa un enseignement pratique, ouvert au public extérieur à l'asile qui fit l'objet d'une virulente campagne de presse conduisant à sa suspension. Les leçons qu'il dispensa à Strasbourg sont à l'origine de cet ouvrage. Repoussant la classification étiologique de Morel, il s'appuie sur celle admise par les aliénistes (adoptée notamment par Baillarger et Esquirol). Cette classification est fondée sur l'observation clinique et sur la symptomatologie. Cette troisième édition, profondément remaniée, fait de cet ouvrage une "oeuvre nouvelle". Ce livre eut un succès considérable. Magnan le cite en ces termes "devenu classique, répandu non seulement en France mais aussi à l'étranger, il a servi de guide à plusieurs générations de médecins ; les magistrats, à leur tour, et les administrateurs y puisent de précieux renseignements". These three large portfolios contain reproductions of drawings by Eugène Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc (1814 – 1879), a major French architect and theorist. Born in Paris, he embraced rebellion as a youth, and is said to have built a barricade in the Revolution of 1830. And, although he was drawn to architecture early, he refused to enter the École des Beaux-Arts, thinking it stuffy and his attendence would entail years of uninspiring rote work and copying. So he apprenticed in the architectural offices of Jacques-Marie Huvé and Achille-François-René Leclère. After studies in Italy, Viollet-le-Duc was commissioned to undertake the first of a series of restorations of medieval buildings, when Prosper Mérimée entrusted the young architect with the commission to restore the Romanesque abbey at Vézelay. This led to a series of important similar commissions to restore the glorious architectural past of France, including Mont Saint-Michel, Carcassonne, Roquetaillade, and, of course, the work that would become one of the signatures of his career and his time -- Notre Dame de Paris, for which Viollet-le-Duc became famous all over Europe. His understanding of the scope and nature of "restoration" is not entirely consistent with modern thinking. On one hand, Viollet-le-Duc had a thorough knowledge of period detail, as many of these drawings demonstrate. He knew what the Gothic and Romanesque builders knew and understood the materials available to them and their properties profoundly. But his position was represented by a key passage in his influential 10 volume 'Dictionnaire Raisonné de L'Architecture Française du XIe au XVIe siècle' -- "Restaurer un édifice, ce n'est pas l'entretenir, le reparer ou le refaire, c'est le rétablir dans un état complet qui ne peut avoir jamais existé à un moment donné". [Restoration, goes beyond maintenance, repair and rebuilding, but may bring a building to a finished state, which may in fact never have actually existed at any given time]. In the case of Notre Dame, the application of Viollet-le-Duc's principles of restoration led to something which went well beyond fixing up and cleaning; his "updated" led to the addition of the great cathedral's distinctive third tower, and added many of the fabulous grotesques which enhance the facade. These grotesques grew out of the vast number of notes and drawings, which Viollet-le-Duc made throughout his life -- not only for the buildings he was working on, but also on Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance buildings that were soon to be demolished. The drawings were a source for his great 'Dictionnaire raisonné de l'architecture française ...' and for other books and his high-profile restoration work. But they are also a fine resource in themselves and a window into the developed eye and culture of an epochal figure in architecture. Sir John Summerson wrote in 1948 that "there have been two supremely eminent theorists in the history of European architecture - Leon Battista Alberti and Eugène Viollet-le-Duc." These three portfolios were published by Armand Guérinet, a leading publisher of architectural books in Paris. They are undated, but most instutions assign a range of dates from about 1896 for the first, to 1902 for the final, third series. I: The first series has a note at head of title: "Archives de la Commission des monuments historiques, Musee de sculpture comparee, Bibliotheque." There is an internal title page, four leaves of notes and a list of plates, and two series of plates; A1-A99 [plates A1-A45 depict details of Notre Dame] ; and 100-138. The final twenty plates in the second group are photographs mostly by Aron, of various buildings restored by Viollet-le-Duc; most depict Notre Dame de Paris. II: Is denoted on the title page: "Ensembles." Title page, list of plates and 130 plates. Many of these are larger than the sheets full of smaller detail drawings in the first volume, and quite a few are photographs by Aron, beautifully reproduced in single sheet-fed heliogravure. Several plates are double numbers, on double sized sheets (as is the case with the first portfolio). III: has caption subtitle "Nouvelle série" on p. [3]. Title page, list of plates and 59 sheets of plates. Plates 1-48 contain reproductions of the original drawings which served to illustrate the 'Voyages pittoresques et romantiques dans l'ancienne France by Nodier, Taylor and Cailleux'. The remainder of the plates are drawings of detail, to complement the collection published in the first series: "Détails d'exécution." Condition: The portfolios are intact, integral and original, with cloth spines and printed paper covered boards, and three fabric ties securing each portfolio. The plates and text sheets are loosely laid in the portfolios as issued. The boards of the portfolios display some modest toning and a trace of soiling, one tie (only) is missing from the first portfolio, at the bottom. There is toning to the title pages and the versos of the final plates, a transfer from the glues used in assembling the portfolios -- (particularly true of the first series). Contents are collated and all the plates are present -- [actually, there is one extra plate in the first series, a second plate designated "A39."] A few plates display some very light foxing, mostly in the margins, and a very few have minor scrappiness in the margins or a turned-down corner or two, as is almost inevitable in hundred-year-old collections issued as loose plates in portfolio, but there are no tears, damage, or marks of any sort. A complete set of the three series -- represented in a number of institutional holdings -- [see OCLC Number: 10751973], but are now scarce in commerce. The many fine architectural photographs by Aron, reproduced in the handsome heliogravure which is now very nearly a lost art, help put the Viollet-le-Duc drawings in context, and form a contemporary record of the restorations of Notre Dame de Paris, Mont Saint-Michel, Carcassonne, Roquetaillade, and the Château de Pierrefonds, (a final commission "reinterpreted" by Viollet-le-Duc for Napoleon III, a work which was interrupted by the departure of the Emperor in 1870). These restorations are likely to be debated and studied for the next thousand years. (A heavy and awkward three volume set which will require extra postage for alll destinations, but is worth the trouble). .
