        Tales of Mean Streets.

London, Methuen. 1894 - First Edition, First Issue. 8vo. 301pp + 32pp ads dated October 1894. Publisher's olive green cloth titled in gilt to spine and front boards. Bumped to frayed spine ends with some scuffing and light wear to extremities and with trifling wear. A very good, clean copy. Edges untrimmed, very light sporadic spotting. Inscribed by Morrison to front flyleaf to none other than Herbert Greenhough Smith; editor of the mighty Strand magazine and one of Morrison's first and most important literary patrons. Inscribed copies of Morrsion's more important works can be difficult to find, he tended towards reclusiveness and had the reputation of being respected rather than loved by his contemporaries, to find a copy inscribed to someone as significant in Morrison's life as Herbert G. Smith is indeed remarkable. A splendid object. Published a couple of years before 'A Child of The Jago' this book is part of Morrison's 'slums of London' cycle that ends with 'The Hole In The Wall' in 1902. With his gritty depictions of the moral and social compromises necessary for survival in such dreadful places, and his unwillingness to take a critical stance regarding his characters and their predicament, Morrison stands out as far superior to the standard crop of God-bothering 'urban reform through fiction' mongers that the late Victorian age spewed forth in their dozens. An interesting copy of a scarce and admirable book. Eric Quayle; Detective Fiction. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Picture Pages For Little Folks of All Ages

London / New York: Ernest Nister / E.P. Dutton, 1894. - With An Early Unrecorded Illustration By Louis Wain[WAIN, Louis, illustrator]. [WEATHERLY, Fred E. and Clifton Bingham, text]. Picture Pages For Little Folks of All Ages. London / New York: Ernest Nister / E.P. Dutton, [1894]. First edition. Large quarto (12 x 9 5/8 in;,303 x 242 mm). [36] pp. Chromolithograph and black and white illustrations throughout. Printed in Bavaria.Quarter blue cloth over chromolithographed pictorial glazed boards. Neat gift inscription dated 1895. A stunning copy with only the slightest hint of wear at corners.Page 10 contains a chromolithograph ("Mr. Milkman") that while unsigned (see below) is clearly by Louis Wain at an early stage of his career and is thus far unrecorded. While others illustrated cats (and imitated Wain) no one's cats were quite like Wain's cats, who invariably possess an unmistakable, slightly insane gleam in their eyes.Ernest Nister (1842-1909) "produced more than five hundred mostly undated illustrated books for children, but from the 1890s the firm's production was almost exclusively toy or movable books and Nister introduced many new mechanical techniques The illustrations in Nister's books—typically featuring affluent, well- dressed, cheerful children at play—were produced by many different artists. The artist's name, however, was often either dropped or missing, while the signature of Nister, as lithographer, was usually found somewhere on the work—thus leading to confusion about attribution. Nister frequently reused illustrations, occasionally adding picture elements that were not in the original work." (The Oxford Encyclopedia of Children's Literature). At the end of the nineteenth century, Louis Wain (1860-1939), the Edwardian cat artist who went mad, became a household name as an illustrator of cats, whom he depicted in all sorts of activities, from skating and playing cricket to driving motor cars, attending dances, and playing musical instruments. "He invented a cat style, a cat society, a whole cat world. English cats that do not look like Louis Wain cats are ashamed of themselves" (H.G. Wells)."From 1883, Wain began to draw cats as they had never been drawn before, cats in humorous guises, in human situations, but always beautifully handled [a]lthough he was sometimes forced to draw dogs before he became well-known!" (Houfe, The Dictionary of British Illustrators and Caricaturists 1800-1914)."The Hogarth of cat life" (Punch). Not in Dale. [Attributes: First Edition]

Thomson observed two patches of light on the photographic plate, which suggested two different parabolas of deflection. Thomson concluded that neon is composed of atoms of two different atomic masses (neon-20 and neon-22), that is to say of two isotopes. This was the first evidence for isotopes of a stable element; Frederick Soddy had previously proposed the existence of isotopes to explain the decay of certain radioactive elements. Thomson's separation of neon isotopes by their mass was the first example of mass spectrometry, which was subsequently improved and developed into a general method by Thomson's student F. W. Aston and by A. J. Dempster. (Wikipedia). [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        ADRIFT IN THE PACIFIC

1894. New and Cheaper Edition. Illustrated. London: Sampson Low, Marston & Company, 1894. Original green cloth pictorially decorated in black. "New and Cheaper Edition," issued five years after Sampson Low's first U.K. edition, in a similar binding (showing Briant diving into the water from a giant kite) and with the same illustrations. In this tale, a dozen young boys are shipwrecked without adults on a desert island, and struggle to survive during the two years they await rescue; they divide into two antagonistic groups, with quite different philosophies. This adventure has often been cited as a precursor to William Golding's rather similar LORD OF THE FLIES (1954).~This tale was first published in 1888 as DEUX ANS DE VACANCES, and in English in early 1889 by George Munro in his cheap wrappered "Seaside Library," as A TWO YEARS' VACATION. In November 1889 Sampson Low published ADRIFT IN THE PACIFIC, a hardbound illustrated ("two parts in one") version, being a different translation.~This copy has been recased within its original binding, preserving the original light yellow endpapers (reinforced at the inner hinges) -- but is otherwise near-fine (very minor rubbing of the spine gilt). Taves & Michaluk V034; Myers 1.
