        OUR MANIFOLD NATURE

London:: William Heinemann,. 1894.. 8vo. 7-3/4" x 5-1/8". 1st book edition (NCBEL III, 1054; Wolff 2670). Not in Sadleir. INSCRIBED PRESENTATION copy, marked by the author as "Advanced Copy". viii, [2], 271, [5], 20 pp. March 1894 publisher catalogue last 20 pages.. Original publisher's olive-green cloth binding with gilt stamping.. Slight cock, with modest shelfwear. Bookstore stamp to bottom of. front paste-down. Light foxing. Rear hinge starting. A VG copy.. Born Frances Elizabeth Bellenden Clarke, the author, at the young age of 16, married a widowed army surgeion, David Chambers McFall, who was already the father to two sons: Chambers Haldane Cooke McFall and Albert William Crawford McFall. With 20+ years age difference between her & her husband, over the ensuing years of marriage, the marital relationship between the two grew apart, with Grand beginning to express her feminist "New Woman" philosophy through the medium of print, publishing her first novel, Ideala, in 1888. Emboldened by her modicum of literary success, two years later Grand divorced her husband, and not too long thereafter assumed the nom-de-plum that we know today, Sarah Grand, under which she wrote her most famous novel, the strongly feminist The Heavenly Twins [1893]. This work of hers here offered is a collection of stories, which Grand, in her preface, terms an "experiment", by which she means varying from the constraining societal conventions on fiction, and which the magazines of the day imposed changes in order to be published. By 1894, riding the phenomenal success of Heavenly Twins, Grand commanded the literary gravitas with Heinemann to see these stories republished, where they "now appear for the first time unmutilated as well as carefully revised." This copy inscribed by Grand on the half-title page: "To My dear old Boy Chambers / from Sarah Grand [underscore] / 12th March 1894" Toward the bottom of the page, under the printed title, Grand has written: "Advanced Copy". While the exact identity of the "Chambers" noted in the inscription is now lost to antiquity, we would not deem beyond probability the presentation of this 'Advanced Copy', wherein the new name Sarah Grand is emphasized, to be her either to her son by marriage, Chambers Haldane Cooke McFall [whom is refered to by the ODNB as 'Haldane'], or perhaps to her estranged former husband, David Chambers McFall. However, this, we again note, is speculation on our part, and the true identity of this individual remains a question mark. . Photographic frontispiece.

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE. With inscription and original drawing. With a preface by George Saintsbury

George Allen. London. 1894. FIRST THOMSON EDITION. The larger, untrimmed issue. 8vo. (7.9 x 5.4 inches). Beautifully illustrated throughout with 101 fine line engravings by Thomson. Inscribed and with ink drawing of a Woman (possibly one of the Bennet girls) by Hugh Thomson on the blank front endpaper. The inscription reads "To James Kirkwood, Esq., with the kind regards of Hugh Thomson Decr. 1894" The full body portrait shows a young woman in large feathered hat, wearing a full length dress, coat and holding a muff, and measures 3.2 inches high. Overall a remarkable copy of this beautiful book. There are just a couple of spots of foxing to the first and last couple of pages otherwise it is a very clean and bright copy of the scarce first Thomson edition in publishers variant binding of plain green cloth with a printed paper label. Plain white endpapers. The page edges are untrimmed so the book is larger than the more often found issue in the gilt designed Peacock binding. This plain binding was issued on copies intended for rebinding. The spine label is rubbed and chipped. The edges of the boards are a little bumped and rubbed but generally this is a very good copy of the book with an attractive original drawing and early inscription from Thomson making it a unique and special copy of this hugely popular edition.-------- One of the best, and most popular, illustrated books of the late nineteenth century. Thomson illustrated this work for George Allen publishers before going on to illustrate the other Austen books for Macmillan & Co. This is the scarcest of all the Thomson/Austen titles in first edition.

Fine condition. Numbered ì7î by Muir in the upper right, he first darkly pens, in full, ìIn the strictly Alpine forests there is but little of that sublime wind-waving as characteristic of those of the lower zones. The burly Junipers about as thick as they are high some of them eight or ten feet in diameter are.î There are a few differences between the above and his actual final version published in Chapter 10 A Wind-storm in the Forests: ìLittle, however, of this noble tree-waving and tree-music will you see or hear in the strictly alpine portion of the forests. The burly Juniper, whose girth sometimes more than equals its height, is about as rigid as the rocks on which it grows.î Inverting the page, Muir then works on Chapter 9 The Douglas Squirrel, numbering it ì3.î In full, first describing a thrush reacting to his singing and whistling: ìin the air within 8 or 10 feet of my head sustaining himself in the air for a few seconds like a hummingbird- then light on the nearest branch. Never have I ever spoken or played to a more interesting audience no human audiences could be more attentive. My performance had now lasted half an hour or more. & after whistling Over the Water to Charlie Yankee Dood not one listened more patiently attentively than my first Sq[uirrel] but the moment I began Old 100 he screamed his Ind[ian] name Pil[lillooeet] & darted out of sight in ludicrous haste seeming to say Iíll be ___ if you listen as if he would be dód if he would hear so solemn ñ unforest-likeî

Reminiscences of the Baltic Fleet 0f 1855

Printed not Published, D H Edwards, Brechin, 1894. First Edition Privately Printed; Original very good maroon decorative boards, hardback, open title surrounded by gilt to front board, embellished with a spray of flowers printed in black, bevelled edges, some minor wear. Dark brown endpapers, SIGNED - dedication hand written by the author under the black and white portrait frontispiece. ' To Admiral Alington with the compliments of The Author Nov. 1896.' This book is very smart and clean, vi, 138 pages including index. Illustrated with black and white engravings. There are 10 Full page black & white plates, plus 2 double page maps, and numerous engraved embellishments in the text. The Preface begins 'The following reminiscences have been compiled from a Journal kept by me while serving in the Baltic Fleet, supplemented by recollections which had not and never can fade from my memory ---.' This is a book that is not readily available on the open market. It is interesting because it is privately published and represents the experiences of someone who actually saw what happened. It is printed 40 years after the event and the author feels. After the lapse of forty years I am able to write of these matters, as well as to mention shipmates by name,in a way impossible for the first decade or two following the events described ---.' The author sums up his preface with 'This book is only for my family and friends to whom I feel it will be acceptable ---.' If we look at the Contents it has 14 Chapter headings and an Appendix. To give an idea the headings are Volunteering, Portsmouth, Join the Fleet, Life on the "Duke" (Duke of Wellington.),Routine of a War Ship, Shipmates, Rendezvous at Kiel, Revl and Nargen, Croustadt, Internal Machines, Preparations against Sweaborg, Bombardment at Sweaborg, Post Bombardment, Homeward Bound, Appendix - Some of our Baltic Gun Room Songs, Index. A few pencil annotations that are quite interesting in themselves. Names of ships, liners, commanders and other crew. Plenty of information from the time of the Crimean War. This is a delightful piece of personally documented history. The writer was a ships physician. A real treasure for collectors of Antiquarian Maritime books. Rare and unusual. It is a privilege to look at one man's insight into the Baltic Fleet of 1855.

THE YELLOW BOOK - An Illustrated Quarterly (1894-1897 13 volumi tutto il pubblicato), London, Mathews & Lane, 1894

Volume I April 1894 pp. 272 " II July 1894 pp. 360 " III October 1894 pp. 278 " IV January 1895 pp. 284 " V April 1895 pp. 318 " VI July 1895 pp. 336 " VII October 1895 pp. 320 " VIII Januyary 1896 pp. 406 " IX April 1896 pp. 256 " X July 1896 pp. 344 " XI October 1896 pp. 342 " XII January 1897 pp. 344 " XIII April 1897 pp. 316 La collezione completa dei 13 volumi
