        Landschaft bei Beetz, 1894

The Poetical Works of Percy Bysshe Shelley

London - Gibbings and Company Limited, 1894. London - Gibbings and Company Limited, 1894 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A handsome set of Shelley's Poetical Works in fine Bumpus bindings with binders stamp to front pastedown. A prizepresentation copy with ink inscriptions to front blank for St. Thomas' Hospital, London dated2 October 1897. In three volumes complete. Percy Bysshe Shelley(4 August 1792- 8 July 1822) was one of the major English Romantic poets and is critically regarded as among the finest lyric poets in the English language. Shelley was famous for his association with John Keats and Lord Byron. The novelist Mary Shelley (ne Godwin) was his second wife. Shelley's unconventional life and uncompromising idealism, combined with his strong disapproving voice, made him a marginalised figure during his life, important in a fairly small circle of admirers, and opened him to criticism as well as praise afterwards. Long after Shelley's death, Mark Twain took particular aim at Shelley indefence of Harriet Shelley, where he lambasted the 22-year-old Shelley for abandoning his pregnant 18-year-old wife and child to run off with the 16-year-old Mary Godwin. Shelley never lived to see the extent of his success and influence; although some of his works were published, they were often suppressed upon publication. He became an idol of the next three or four generations of poets, including important Victorian and Pre-Raphaelite poets. He was admired by Karl Marx, Oscar Wilde, Thomas Hardy, George Bernard Shaw, Bertrand Russell, William Butler Yeats, Upton Sinclair and Isadora Duncan. William Michael Rossetti (25 September 1829- 5 February 1919) was an English writer and critic. He was a son of immigrant Italian scholar Gabriele Rossetti, and the brother of Maria Francesca Rossetti, Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Christina Georgina Rossetti. Condition: In handsome full calf bindings. Externally, smart with only minor wear to extremities and very slight marks to boards. Internally, firmly bound. Generally bright and clean throughout but with slight marginal off setting from binding and the odd spot to endpapers. Overall: VERY GOOD.

The Croonian Lecture: La fine structure des centres nerveux'. Pp. 444-468 in: Proceedings of the Royal Society of London, Volume LV [55] [Fifty-five], January 18 - April 26, 1894. [Received March 1, 1894, read March 8, 1894.]

London: Harrison & Sons, 1894. - Entire volume offered. Contemporary 3/4-leather and marbled boards, rebacked with original spine preserved. Ink stamp on title page and p. iii. Old card affixed to rear pastedown. Ghost of spine label. Else Very Good. The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1906 was awarded jointly to Camillo Golgi and Santiago Ramón y Cajal 'in recognition of their work on the structure of the nervous system.' 'One hundred years ago, the Spanish scientist Santiago Ramón y Cajal delivered the Croonian Lecture (La fine structure des centres nerveux) of the Royal Society of London in which he not only set forth the connectionist approach to central neural processing, but also proposed mechanisms of functional nervous plasticity that were forerunners of recent views' (Abstract of Edward G. Jones, 'Santiago Ramón y Cajal and the Croonian Lecture, March 1894', Trends in Neurosciences, Volume 17, Issue 5, 1994, Pages 190–192). 'A strong believer in willpower and individual initiative, Ramón y Cajal felt that vigorous mental exercise improved one's ability to think by creating new connections among dendritic trees. In his Croonian lecture of 1894, he even went so far as to speculate that intensive thought encouraged the growth of new collaterals. For Ramón y Cajal, the nervous system was a living, dynamic structure that could grow and change so dramatically because it was composed of independent, freely terminating elements' (Laura Otis, Networking: Communicating with Bodies and Machines in the Nineteenth Century, 2001, pp. 67-8). Eric R. Kandel, Psychiatry, Psychoanalysis, and the New Biology of Mind, 2008, p. 230. Marcus Jacobson, Foundations of Neuroscience (Springer, 1993), p. 239. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Directory of Supreme, Grand and Subordinate Lodges of the Ancient Order of United Workmen, For the Years 1894-95

The Supreme Lodge 1894 - 151 p. 26 cm. Grey paper covers with black print. Some chips, small tears, and soiling to covers. Tear in p. 67. A bit of discolouration to pp. 28 & 40. Some tiny holes in pp. 39-41 near bottom. The Ancient Order of United Workmen was a fraternal organization in the United States and Canada, providing mutual social and financial support for its members. Its founding marked the beginning of a network of fraternal benefit societies, the premise of which is that every man is his "brother's keeper" and has a moral responsibility to others. Thus the logo on the front cover asking "Who is my neighbour?" The answer is clearly everyone, or at least other lodge members. As founder John Upchurch was a Freemason, he incorporated various traditions of Freemasonry, including local "lodges" or branches, regalia and initiation ceremonies, into the order. His goal may have been to act as a kind of labour negotiator, settling differences between employers and employees, but the A.O.U.W.'s principal business became providing insurance protection for members' widows and orphans. Eventually it evolved into Pioneer Mutual Life Insurance Company. The operations of the Ancient Order of United Workmen of Ontario were acquired by the Independent Order of Foresters in 1926.Since the A.O.U.W. was founded in Meadville, Pennsylvania, it's not surprising that Pennsylvania comes first in the list of lodges. Index at rear lists officers of the Supreme Lodge as well as those in district lodges from British Columbia to Wisconsin. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

The Memoirs of Jacques Casanova (12 vols.). Written by himself now for the first time translated into English

Privately Printed, 1894. [London]: Privately Printed, 1894. First English language edition. Original white parchment bindings stamped in gilt on the boards and spines and numbered 1 - 12. This set one of fifty from the large-paper edition, each volume numbered 27 on the limitation page. All books Very Good+ to Near Fine, uniformly toned on the spines and with varying degrees of wear at the spine ends. All books with tape-ghosts on the end papers, otherwise internal contents are in excellent condition (if a bit browned/brittle on the rough page-edge). A scarce, uniform large-paper set. & & Casanova's exploits, recorded in his diaries, read like a Dumas novel with sexual conquests dashed in like cayenne pepper. Giacomo Casanova, Chavalier de Seingalt, (1725 - 1798) lived in most European cities, but called Venice home. He wrote the story of his life over the course of three years, 1789 - 1792, and the resulting memoirs are unapologetic, humorous, and extremely enjoyable. "The memoir is considered extraordinary because of its detailed and colorful descriptions of the rich cultural and social life of late-18th-century Europe, including Casanova';s own sexual encounters, duels, visits to royal courts, carriage chases, evasions of arrest and swindles. Along the way he drops the names of his acquaintances, like Jean-Jacques Rousseau." (New York Times, November 28, 2011) The original manuscript for the memoirs is now contained in the National Library of France, where it was put on exhibit for the first time in late 2011.
