His instructions were to monopolize trade with East India for portugal, and to exclude both Venetians and Saracens from Indian waters [...] Attacks were made on the Arab ports at Malindi, Hoja, Lamu and Brava, before continuing to Socotra [...] Sailing from Socotra with six ships, Albuquerque coasted the Arabian peninsula, sacked Muscat and Sohar, and then launched an attack on Hormuz during the months of September and October 1507. In spite of the overwhelming forces assembled against him by the island's twelve-year-old ruler, Albuquerque mounted a successful siege, with the result that the ruler become a vassal of the Portuguese crown" (Howgego I, 19ff.). - Signed "A. J. Whittle" on half-titles (but struck out in vol. 1). Slight rubbing to extremeties, fine altogether.

        Shakespeare's England

New York: Macmillan and Company, 1894. 12mo. 274pp. A unique copy with beautifully executed original pen and ink drawings throughout showing the sights and landmarks of Shakespeare's country. Profusely illustrated with hand-drawn vignettes of the thatched cottages of Stratford-upon-Avon, landscape vistas of Warwick and Windsor, and other known British locations. The illustrations are imaginative and romantic: at one point, a flock of birds alights from the rooftop of the Red Horse Inn and wings its way across the open pages to Stratford Church. The text, which is meant to be a guide for the American literary traveler, opens with quotations from Shakespeare and Wordsworth. Fitch has encircled these verses with a set of scenic, cascading post cards, threaded together with a ribbon. Very little is known about the illustrator, E. Fitch: one illustration is signed "E. Fitch Catskill," but no record could be found of an illustrator by that name in the area. Ornately bound in red morocco by the American bindery Bradstreet's. Both covers are decorated with borders of oak leaves and acorns, employing onlays of green morocco and gilt vines. The spine is divided into six compartments, gilt-titled in one, and with gilt roses in the remaining five. Green morocco doublures are decorated with gilt dentelles and a border of leafy vines accented with minute butterflies. Silver moiré silk endpapers bordered with gilt decoration and a rose in each corner complete this sumptuous binding. Extremely fine and housed in a red morocco pull-off case. T.e.g. With a laid-in card bearing a gift note from the Philadelphia rare book dealer A. S. W. Rosenbach; it is speculated that Rosenbach, or another bookseller, might have had this copy specially embellished for an important private client.

        Pride and Prejudice

George Allen Ruskin House 1894 - Beautiful FINE Limited Edition. One of 250 large paper copes for Britain. 476 pages. Decorated title page, frontispiece, and large illustrations (160 in all, printed on special China paper and laid down) by Hugh Thomson printed on unbleached Arnold paper. This copy has been exquisitely bound by Chicago's premier fine binder, Scott Kellar, who was asked to give us his best work. The pristine, crisp, and creamy white handmade paper text block has been bound in full teal morocco leather. It has been decorated with tasteful rule and stamp designs on front and back panels and spine (with title and author), all full gilt. Bottom and fore edge have deckle edge untrimmed as issued, and top and inner edge of boards are cranberry to tie into the full cranberry leather clamshell box made to contain the volume. Both book and box are as perfect as the day they left the binder's hand. The one minor flaw is a slight and quite unobtrusive sun fading to pastedown and front free endpaper, affecting one inch and one half inch respectively on fore edge of each. Overall we could not imagine a more lovely and elegant copy of this edition of Austen's masterpiece. It would make a beautiful gift presentation. More photos available upon request. The Banditti of the Plains, or the Cattlemen's Invasion of Wyoming in 1892

Cheyenne, WY, 1894. First Edition, First Printing 1st Printing. Hardcover. Fair. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Fantastic association copy with signature from Wild Bunch gang member William Ellsworth "Elzy" Lay on front endpaper. Lay was Butch Cassidy's second-in-command, outranking the Sundance Kid. He was indispensable in the execution of the 1897 Castle Gate, UT payroll robbery and the infamous 1899 Wyoming train job. Eventually, he left the outlaw lifestyle and settled down with family as a businessman in southern California. According to the family, the last few pages and endpapers are missing because Lay tore them out on which to write his will. The book itself is no less legendary, with the expose of the Wyoming Stock Grower's Association by a journalist who had come to the state to edit their official publication and eventually took sympathy with the side of the Wyoming settlers. The cattle barons and the WSGA repeatedly attempted to wipe Mercer's book from existence, through his arrest and harassment and arson of his press. Brown cloth boards are frayed along edges, a third of spine is torn away, front board becoming detached and quite fragile. Text is clean and free of markings. Six Guns 1478, Herd 1474, Graff 2750, Howes M522, Six-Score 79.
