[Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Epistola de Contemptu Mundi di Frate Hieronymo da Ferrara dellordine de Frati Predicatori la Quale Manda ad Elena Buonaccorsi Sua Madre, per consolarla della morte del Fratello, suo Zio

[Hammersmith]: Printed Privately for Charles Fairfax Murray by William Morris at the Kelmscott Press 1894 - Edited and illustrated by Murray. First edition thus. One of 150 copies. Publisher's slate blue boards over white cloth, printed in black and red ink. Fine, with just a few faint spots to the otherwise fresh boards, with former owners Lenore and James Marshall's bookplate (an original etching signed by Ernest Roth) to the front pastedown, bright and clean pages. A beautiful copy. This copy of Savonarola's Epistola was formerly owned by American poet and activist Lenore Marshall and her husband James. In addition to her work as an activist boycotting nuclear activity and lynching, Lenore was an editor at Cape and Smith, where she encouraged the publication of William Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury and edited As I Lay Dying. The Marshall's bookplate is an original etching by noted German-American landscape artist Ernest D. Roth. Epistola de Contemptu Mundi is a 15th century religious text by Girolamo Savonarola, an Italian Dominican friar and martyr best known for helping establish democratic order in Florence after the overthrow of the Medici family. This edition was designed and hand printed at William Morris' Kelmscott Press, which produced beautiful with elaborate decorations inspired by medieval manuscripts. Kelmscott's Chaucer, the press' best-known work, is widely considered one of the most beautiful volumes ever printed and is often cited as a major source of inspiration for modern private presses. Notably, Epistola, designed by and printed for Charles Fairfax Murray, was not sold by Kelmscott and represents one of the few occasions where Morris allowed the wishes of his colleagues to influence the press' choice of publications.         The Yellow Book: An Illustrated Quarterly

London: Elkin Mathews & John Lane, 1894-1897 Thirteen volumes. First editions. Publisher's pictorial yellow cloth, illustrated and lettered in black. Near fine, with light wear to the extremities, a hint of toning to the spines, faint scattered offsetting to the endpapers, Vol. II lightly starting at p. 84, Vol. III with minor pencil marginalia to contents page, otherwise clean pages and sturdy bindings. A beautiful set, extremely uncommon in such nice condition. The Yellow Book was an important albeit short-lived serial publication that is largely associated with its first art director Aubrey Beardsley. Over the course of its publication, The Yellow Book included literature by noted authors such as Henry James, William Butler Yeats, Henry Harland, Arthur Symons, and Kenneth Grahame, and artwork by talented artists including Beardsley, Walter Sickert, Charles Pears, and A. S. Hartrick, among others. The title "yellow book" refers to the 19th century practice of French publishers to use yellow wrappers on explicit literature, and indicates the mission of the journal- to publish the artists and authors whose works were too controversial for more mainstream publications. Indeed, when his artwork was critiqued as crass after the first two volumes, Beardsley included artwork in strikingly different styles under the pseudonyms Philip Brouqhton and Albert Foschter in Volume III. Riding the popular success garnered by his illustrations for Oscar Wilde's Salome, Beardsley continued his striking and controversial illustrations in the first issue of The Yellow Book in April 1894, drawing immediate attention to the journal. However, after Wilde was arrested for charges of indecency, Beardsley received negative attention for his association with Wilde and was fired by John Lane after the fifth issue of The Yellow Book as a result. Unfortunately, The Yellow Book was tainted by its association with the scandal, and the publication halted after its 13th and final issue in April 1897. Ironically, though he is linked to its initial fame and ultimate demise, Oscar Wilde was never published in The Yellow Book because of his unfriendly relationship with Beardsley; these two leaders of the Aesthetic movement were often compared for their similarly dark and controversial material, which unfortunately only fueled their animosity towards one another.. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine.

Salome. A Tragedy in One Act

London / Boston: Elkins Mathews & John Lane / Copeland & Day, 1894. Small quarto. First English and first illustrated edition. From an edition of 125 copies on Japan vellum, this copy has been specially bound for the owner and contains three suppressed plates in addition to the ten black & white plates listed at the front of the book. The first, "John and Salome," was replaced in the final book with "The Black Cape." The other two plates are earlier versions of "Enter Herodias" and "Toilette of Salome," which were deemed too risqué for publication and were altered. Bound in gilt-decorated vellum with gilt rolls to the edges of the covers and blue marbled paper doublures and endpapers. Some faint scratches to the vellum on the rear cover, else an extremely fine copy With the engraved bookplate of Dr. Charles Carpenter printed on a bound-in sheet. Although Wilde commissioned Beardsley to illustrate his translation of Salome, he was shocked by the end result and felt that the images overpowered his text. Beardsley mocked Wilde in several of the illustrations, depicting him as the "Woman in the Moon," and as a jester in "Enter Herodias.

Berlin, Lewent'sche Buchdruckerei, 1894. (2),78 pp.

1894 - Contemporary yellow half cloth with slightly worn green label. Marbled edges. Wrappers not preserved. With the signature of the Swedish book collector Thore Virgin, dated 1949, and a dedication from the author to G. Mittag-Leffler. The dedication cut at top with unsignificant loss of text.Zetterlund I:59. All published. First Swedish edition published in 1906. "Antibarbarus" was the result of Strindberg's increasing interest in the natural sciences at the beginning of the 1890's. During his stay in Paris 1894-85 he came into contact with some of the leading practitioners of "modern alchemy" at the time and subsequently started doing his own alchemical experiments. He believed, among other things, that the number of chemical elements was fewer than claimed by the established science, and that one chemical element could be transformed into another, for example gold. Strindberg made considerable effort to win support for his theories in the scientific community, although with limited success. Later commentators has ascribed some poetic value to "Antibarbarus", but failed to see the scientific breakthroughs that the author self confidently laid claim to. Gösta Mittag-Leffler was a distinguished Swedish mathematician and an advocate for increased international cooperation in the field. He was, among other things, the founder of the periodical "Acta Mathematica". Mittag-Leffler and his sister Anna Charlotta had several friends in the artistic community of Stockholm and became acquainted with Strindberg through these circles. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
