Set during the early years of the 19th century, this pre-Civil War satire tackles social commentary issues still being debated today. Twain presents the reader with a light-skinned black mother switching her infant with her white master's in order to prevent her own child being raised as a slave.         Le mouvement.

Paris, G. Masson, 1894 - in-8, VI, 335 pp., 3 planches h.t. ; Garrison & Morton, 643 : "Marey, like Muybridge, was a pioneer in the use of serial pictures as a method of studying the mechanics of locomotion." ; Gernsheim, History of photography, p. 442 : "this work ranks a classic in physiological science and has been somewhat loosely acclaimed as the first book on cinematography." ; L. Mannoni, Who's who of Victorian Cinéma :" in 1894 Marey published an important work, Le Mouvement, which covered all his researches. He exercised a considerable influence on all the pioneering inventors of the cinema in the 1890s. His works, widely reported in the international press, were a strong inspiration for Thomas Edison and Louis Lumière, among others. Marey, the real founding father of cinematographic technique, died in 1904." [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

One People, One Destiny, and Other Poems

Alston, Maryborough, Queensland 1894 - 173 pages with monochrome photographic frontispiece of John James Knight. 275 grams. Book is in good lightly marked condition with some wear to cover and a couple of pages loosening. Gift inscription from E. Knight (presumed relative of author) dated 1918. First Edition. Knight, John James (1863-1927) by H. J. Summers John James Knight (1863-1927), editor, was born on 7 June 1863 at Shelton, Staffordshire, England, son of James Knight, potter and printer, and his wife Louisa, née Blagg. Taken to New Zealand early, he left school at 11 to learn printing on the Bruce Herald, returned to England at 17 and joined William Owen and Henry Broadhurst in starting the Staffordshire Knot, a paper supporting trade unionism. Migrating to Queensland in 1884, he found work with the Brisbane Newspaper Co. Ltd as a printer. He was soon a reporter on the Brisbane Courier and became chief parliamentary reporter in the 1890s. Knight's political and industrial enthusiasm disappeared rapidly. He had won the confidence of Andrew Fisher and Thomas Glassey and when William Lane left for Paraguay in 1893 Knight was offered but declined the editorial chair of the Queensland Worker. During the industrial turmoil of the 1890s he preferred to investigate local history. His works included In the Early Days (1895), Australian Pioneers and Reminiscences (1896), completed after the death of Nehemiah Bartley from Bartley's notes and diaries, and Brisbane: a Historical Sketch of the Capital of Queensland (1897). The historical stream dried up when he became editor in 1900 of the Courier's evening publication, the Observer. Editor-in-chief of all the company's publications in 1906-16, Knight then became managing director and later chairman. His years in command saw such abrasive events as Brisbane's tram strike of 1912, the Labor government's introduction of state enterprises in 1915 and the abolition of the Legislative Council in 1922. The Courier was Labor's fiercest critic on these and other counts, yet the recrimination evoked seemed never to touch Knight personally. Like William Morris Hughes, he replaced his youthful fervour for unionism with an ultra-patriotic Imperialist stance during World War I. He represented Queensland on the Imperial Mission to the War Fronts of pressmen in 1918 and returned to publish The True War Spirit, praising the British role. A founding member and president of the Queensland Aero Club with a belief in the future of aviation, Knight was discussing aeroplanes for medical transport with Rev. John Flynn long before the creation of the Australian Inland Mission and had a company formed to deliver copies of the Courier by air to the country. His sympathy with country people led to practical support of the Country Women's Association and the Bush Book Club. As he grew older, he became very remote from his staff who occasionally saw a white-haired, mild-mannered man wearing rimless spectacles. Regular national and international press conferences which he relished took him on visits to Europe and North America. When he died of pneumonia on 24 November 1927 in his home at Kangaroo Point, Knight left the whole of his estate, valued for probate at £2884, to his wife Kitty, née Dutton, whom he had married at Shelton on 2 August 1884; they had two daughters. Hundreds attended his Anglican funeral at Toowong cemetery. The Labor government which his papers had berated for years was represented by the minister for works at the express wish of Premier McCormack; former Labor premier William Neal Gillies was seen weeping at the graveside.         The Purchase Of The North Pole. A sequel to "From The Earth To The Moon

London, Sampson Low, Marston and Company. 1894, 1894. First English edition, later impression. Publishers bottle green decorated cloth binding, embossed in gilt and black depicting a rather fetching "man meets polar bear" theme. Slight signs of rubbing to corners and head of spine, but very minor, bright and strong. A scarce printing, lavishly illustrated by our old friend M. Rioux, depicting the continued (if slightly less sound) adventures of The Baltimore Gun Club, as they purchase the afore mentioned Arctic and seek to divert the earth from its accustomed orbit to shift the climate zones. This will result in the privately owned North Pole becoming a tropical paradise, allowing the Club to clean up on the cruise ship and pina colada holidays market. A tropical paradise inhabited by polar bears? Who ever heard such a...wait just a minute! Once again Mr.Verne proves that, if it hasn't a some point entered his head, it probably isn't worth thinking about. Presumably if I were an ABC executive I'd consider buying his entire body of work and locking J.J. Abrams in a broom closet with a flashlight until he'd read them all. A splendid book.         Autograph letter

      - Single page, 12mo., on verso of post card; approximately 200 words addressed to Alderman Donald McGregor, Jr. (December 1894) ---- "You shall certainly have one of the spare notes for yourself, on condition that you don't return the compliment. You will assuredly be one of the fifteen ablest candidates. The worst of it is, so will I, even from the business point of view. I heartily wish I had so good an excuse for retiring as that poetic incapacity to see the difference between a ten roomed house and an eight roomed one which you so complimentarily ascribe to me. I know your business man perfectly well: he looks wise, sits tight, sees what was done last time & does it over again, and will let you cheat him in the way he is accustomed to sooner than let you put 1000 pounds into his pocket in a new way. There is about as much intelligent observation done by the average rating committee man in viewing the premises as by the average coroner's juror in viewing the body. If you can shew [sic] me a house harder to judge than an opera or a symphony, I'll eat it: there!" ---- In April 1894, eight months before these lines were penned, Shaw's "Arms and the Man" opened to great acclaim in London. It represented the true beginning of his recognition as a popular dramatist. A wonderful letter capturing Shaw's jocular style and inimitable hand; professionally matted and framed.         JUNGLE BOOK and THE SECOND JUNGLE BOOK

London: Macmillan and Co., 1894, 1895. Together 2 volumes. First editions. With illustrations by J. Lockwood Kipling, W. H. Drake and P. Frenzeny. 8vo, publisher’s original polished navy blue cloth lettered and elaborately decorated in gilt on each volume, a.e.g. 212; 238, ads pp. A very pleasing, very handsome, bright and clean and sharp set, unusually nice copies. Spine ends and corners all very well preserved, with only the very lightest evidence of age. Hinges are very tight and very strong and without defect. IMPORTANT FIRST EDITIONS, FIRST ISSUES OF THIS CLASSIC WORK. The stories of Mowgli, a human child lost in the jungles of India and raised by wild animals, struck a cord with readers who somehow found him and his animal friends easy to relate to despite the bizarre circumstances. Arguably the best loved of Kipling’s many delightful works for children and a true classic of its genre.

The Bostonian [and] National Magazine, Volumes 1-49 (1894-1921)

Boston, Mass.: Bostonian Publishing Company; W.W. Potter Co.; Chapple Publishing Co.. (1894-1921). First. Magazine. A consecutive run of the first 49 volumes from 1894-1920. Octavos (the last three volumes are folios). A long run of monthly issues bound in half calf or full cloth, most with the original illustrated wrappers and advertisements bound in, and including four single issues in wraps. Founded in 1894 as The Bostonian, the magazine was re-named The National Magazine in 1896 to reflect its expanded coverage of American topics and letters. It became the leading national journal of American life and Washington affairs before the rise of TIME and LIFE magazines in the 1920s and 1930s. The earliest issues from 1894-1896 featured articles on the Boston theater, music, women's clubs, and general arts and letters. These topics were covered on a national scale when the magazine expanded its coverage in the late 1890s, along with increasing coverage of international affairs. An ex-library set with bookplates and ink stamps, volumes 1-16 only also have perforated stamps, else overall a good set with a few scattered internal tape repairs. A nice comprehensive assemblage of notable Americana and popular culture. .
