Tarnier réduisit considérablement la mortalité maternelle liée à la fièvre puerpérale, qui passa de 9,3 % à 1 % cf. GARRISON & MORTON, 5639 : "Tarnier was the first to adopt Listerism in obstetrics" ; Cutter & Viets, p.194 : "Tarnier is best remembered for axis traction forceps, but he also gained fame as the first to adopt Listerism in obstetrics The book on asepsis and antisepsis, with particular stress on obstetrics, was based on Tarnier's lectures at the Maternité, as rearranged by his assistant, J.Potocki. This elaborate treatise of over 800 pages is A LANDMARK IN THE HISTORY OF OBSTETRICS." The Poetical Works

[by Spottiswoode and Co for] Smith, Elder, & Co, London 1894 - Frontispiece portraits in vols. 3, 7, 8, 10 and 16. 17 volumes. Large 8vo. 237 x 157 x 685 mm]. Original tan cloth, the spines printed paper labels, plain endleaves, uncut edges. (Spines darkened, four labels defective and others chipped, some endleaves browned, and a little rubbed and marked). Limited to 250 copies on hand-made paper. There are a few minor spots and the bindings show some signs of wear but it is a decent copy. Browning died in 1889, so these are his final words. Vol.1 is inscribed in ink on the front endleaf: "I gave this set to my mother as it was published. Stanley Baldwin", vols 3 and 17 have pencil inscriptions "Louisa Baldwin from S.B." and all the volumes have the large bookplate of Louisa Baldwin designed by M.D. Johnston and dated 1922. Stanley Baldwin (1867-1947) served three times as British Prime Minister, in 1923-24, 1924-29 and 1935-37. He was the only child of Alfred and Louisa Baldwin, who married in 1866. Louisa (1845-1925) was the youngest of the four remarkable Macdonald sisters. Alice (1837-1910) was the mother of Rudyard Kipling, Georgina (1840-1920) married the painter Sir Edward Burne-Jones and Agnes (1843-1906) married the painter Sir Edward Poynter. Alfred Baldwin was a successful Worcestershire ironmaker and the couple lived at Wilden House, near to the works. Louisa suffered from poor health but read widely and wrote four novels, along with poetry and collections of stories. She encouraged her son's love of literature, although he failed to shine at Harrow, or Trinity College, Cambridge, from where he graduated with a third in 1888. He returned home to work in the family firm and became Managing Director in 1902. He inherited almost £200,000 on his father's death in 1908, and remained engaged in business until appointed to his first ministerial office in 1917.

Paris: Gauthier-Villars, 1894. 314 x 240 mm. Contemporary cloth. Title evenly browned, with small bookplate tipped to it; bookplate also on front pastedown. Presentation Copy, inscribed (probably by a publisher's clerk) on the front free endpaper: "Avec les compliments de l'Auteur."

First Separate Edition of Michelson's paper describing his and Edward Morley's experimental determination of the length of the international meter bar in terms of wave-lengths of cadmium light, providing thereby a reproducible standard. "Adapting his refractometer as a comparator for lengths that could be reduced through spectroscopy and interferometric techniques to nonmaterial standards of length, Michelson found in 1892-93 that the Paris meter bar was equal to 1,553,163.5 wavelengths of the red cadmium line. So elegant were the success and precision of this project that Michelson became internationally famous" (DSB).

In 1907 Michelson, "the man who taught the world to measure," became the first American to win a Nobel Prize in the sciences, receiving the physics prize for his "optical instruments of precision and the spectroscopic and metrological investigations which he carried out by means of them" (Weber, Pioneers of Science [2nd ed.], p. 31). Michelson is remembered today chiefly for the "Michelson-Morley experiment" (1887), an attempt to measure the relative velocity through which the earth moves through the hypothetical "luminiferous ether"-primarily because of the influence this had on the development of relativity theory. It is probable, however, that the above work of 1894 was also highly valued by the Nobel committee in 1907.

Our sources do not show a separate English-language edition of Michelson's Determination experimentale de la valeur du metre, nor do they indicate where, if ever, the English-language version was published. Since Michelson performed his measurements in Paris, it is reasonable to assume that his paper appeared first in French. It comprises Hübner's complete works on exotic butterflies, the 'Sammlung exotischer Schmetterlinge' published from 1806-24 and his 'Zuträge zur Sammlung exotischer Schmetterlinge' published from 1818-37, of which the last part was published by Geyer. Both these two original works are extremely rare and we have not offered copies since many decades. The new edition of these works on exotic butterflies books by Wystman and Kirby is superbly produced. The plates are printed on thick, wove paper and exquisitely handcoloured. Also this edition is a great rarity and the number of copies produced minute. Wystman published 3 issues, one with German text, one with English text and one with French text. Probably no more than 50 copies were published. Mr. Kirby says "In writing letter press to Hübner's 'Sammlung exotischer Schmetterlinge', I have paid special attention to the correct identification of the species figured, and in one or two cases I have found it necessary to propose new names. I have not given descriptions, but sufficient synonymy and explanations to bring Hübner's plates into range with later publication" (Entomological Society News 1911). Pour le coloris, je me suis assuré le concours de quatre artistes, spécialistes dans ce travail" (From the printed wrappers)./Very little is known about Huebner's life. The rarity of his works is due to the great upheavel caused by the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars and the long period of publication. Huebner was a man of modest means, more or less tied to his native town Augsburg. He was a designer in one of the leading cotton factories of the town. His true love and inclination were Lepidoptera. He published a number of beautifully illustrated iconographies on the subject which he published for his own account and he drew and engraved all the illustrations himself. Rara p. 244). A very nice uniformly bound set.//See Horn & Schenkling 10905 & 10908 for the original edition and Nissen ZBI, 2040 & 2041 for the original edition as well as the present issue.
