Unreasonable Rhymes Told by Anne Idyott [Cover title]

[California, 1894. 80 original ink and watercolor caricature drawings, with manuscript doggerel verse below; dedication leaf "To the Children", with watercolor heads of 5 winsome children; manuscript index of place names; verso of final leaf with watercolor of stork delivering an infant. 1 vols. Oblong 8vo (7 x 10 inches). Limp green cloth, upper cover titled in gilt. Front blank leaf detached, some minor wear, very clean and fresh internally (marginal tear at foot of leaf 31). Half morocco slipcase and chemise. California Caricatures Unique, unpublished manuscript book of eighty caricature scenes, the boldly colored, deft, busy, and highly detailed work of an amateur artist; the verses are less competent ditties in quasi-limerick form, each associated with a city and one of its eccentric residents (mostly in California but also Baltimore, Seattle, Jersey City, Detroit, Perth, and Shanghai). Some attempts at copy editing, chiefly of punctuation, in pencil throughout. There are scenes of horse races, swimming, trains, cattle trading at Point Reyes, boating, battles, ghosts, undersea corpses, the courtship of a horse and an ostrich at Kankakee, real estate swindles (sand lots at Terminal Island)? family dining, high society at Colusa, the tramway at Del Mar, and many more. The last leaf depicts a balding scribbler with his head in his hands beside a drafting table; the only clue to the author, "who came out here from Britain ... Folks said: It cannot be Lord Lytton". Wildly imaginative and UNIQUE.

        Collection de Costumes Suisses

1894. K?-NIG, Franz Niklaus. Collection de Costumes Suisses tirés du cabinet de Mr. Meyer d'Aarau. 48 pp. Illustrated with 24 hand-coloured aquatint plates. 8vo., 177 x 124 mm, bound in contemporary Swiss straight-grained dark blue morocco, gilt-lettering on spine, a.e.g. Canton de Berne: chez l'Auteur, J.J. Bourgdorfer, D.B. Rätzer, N.D. [1804]. |~||~||~||~||~| First Edition thus and First Edition with the explanatory text. Preceded only by the exceedingly rare large format suite of König's 24 hand-coloured, engraved plates issued in 1802. For this smaller version, known as the "Moyen König" the artist recut his designs and printed them in outline etching and aquatint, heightened with hand-colouring. There was also a "Petit König" published in 1811. The text was issued in either French or German versions, this one being in French. What is most significant about these Swiss costume plates by König is that for the first time the subjects were not only identified by local Canton, but the subjects depicted were actual residents of the village and identified by personal name. As König explains in his introduction, his costume plates were copied and pirated on numerous occasions. He further declares that his editions were all printed and coloured "sous mes yeux." Franz Niklaus König (1765-1832), Swiss painter and engraver, created costume plates that were considered a high point in that tradition. The artist's most productive time was when he was living in the Bernese Highlands between 1797-1809. He worked in the mediums of hand-coloured prints, lithographs, watercolours and small oil paintings, mostly destined for the tourist trade. He is credited with founding the Alpine festivals at Unspunnen in 1805 and 1808, from which he also depicted scenes in paintings and prints. This copy with a proof title in manuscript and duplicated printed titles, half-titles and all prefatory text. Signature removed from top of half-title. Well-preserved and complete edition, which is rare. PROVENANCE: Ex-libris printed label of the artist, Franz Niklaus König, in gothic type "F. N. K." Longchamp 1696. Colas 1644. Lipperheide 902.         The Early Indian Wars of Oregon, Compiled from the Oregon Archives and other Original Sources with Muster Rolls

Salem, OR: Frank C. Baker, State Printer, 1894. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. pp xiv, 719, indexed. Original half calf and black pebbled cloth with red and black spine labels. Scuffing and light soiling to leather; internally clean and sound. Near fine. "The author, one of the best Northwest historical writers, was commissioned by the Oregon legislature to record the history of the early wars with the Indians of the Northwest. Set forth in detail are the causes, the events, and the records of the Cayuse War, the Rogue River Wars, and the Yakima war that occurred during the first ten years of the Oregon Territory. The last 200 pages set forth the detailed muster rolls for each of the three wars, presenting the names of the soldiers and officers, their rank and companies, and the dates of service" (Tweney 79). Neatly affixed to the front pastedown of this copy is the printed text of an Oregon Senate resolution ordering that up to 100 copies of this book be given by the Secretary of State to the Grand Commander of the Indian War Veterans of the North Pacific Coast so that veterans may provide corrections and additions, and "material may thus be gathered while these men live, who made history, that justice may be done to the pioneers and veterans that the whole state of Oregon will in years after be proud of."         Epanaphora Indica [parte I.-VI.] na qual se dà noticia da viagem, que o...Senhor Marquez de Castelo Novo fez com o cargo de Vice-Rey ao Estado da India, e dos primeiros progressos do seu governo; ... [subtitle varies].Lisbon, [Francisco da Silva?], 1746-1752. 6 parts in 1 volume. 4to. With a large folding engraved map of Goa on the west coast of India (32.5 x 59 cm; plate size 27 x 59.5 cm), and woodcut decorated initials. Set in roman and italic types. Blind-tooled tanned sheepskin(?) (ca. 1900?), with a red morocco spine label.

F.C. Danvers, Portuguese in India (1894), II, p. 418; Inocêncio 4, pp. 351-352; S. K. Mhamai, Sawants of Wadi: coastal politics in 18th and 19th centuries, p. 185; Porbase (5 complete & 1 incomplete copies). Rare complete set of the six parts of the first and only edition of a very detailed Portuguese account of Goa during the reign of the Viceroy Pedro Migues de Almeida (1688-1756), who governed the region from 1744 to 1750. Although Portuguese power in India had peaked more than a century earlier, Almeida's rule provided a brief respite from the decline. The present book is especially interesting for its account of the Portuguese government's disputes with the predominantly Hindu Maratha Empire that had taken control of most of Northern India from the Islamic Mughal Empire by this time. The large map "Planta da Ilha de Goa" shows the area around the mouths of the Mandovi and Zuari rivers, with the "Ilha de Goa" between them. With an early owner's signature of the priest Joze Alberto at the foot of the title-pages of parts 1 and 2. In part 6, F1.4 is reversed and quired inside F2.3, so that the pages are out of order. Part 4 is untrimmed and part 2 nearly untrimmed. Part 2 and 1 quire in part 4 are badly browned, the foot margin of the first 3 leaves of part 2 and some marginal chips in the title-page of part 1 have been restored, not affecting the text, and there are holes in the margins of the title-page of part 2, not affecting the text. Further with occasional minor browning, faint water stains in the map (whose left edge has been trimmed close to the border), and occasional minor marginal worm holes. A rare contemporary account of Goa under Portuguese rule.

        Collection of War Triptychs

1894. SINO-JAPANESE WAR. Coloured Woodblock War Triptychs. Twenty colour woodblock triptychs. Folio, each print folded twice to 355 x 233 mm, bound accordion style between Japanese linen-covered boards, Japanese calli-graphic lettering pieces on covers of volume. [Tokyo?], ca. 1894-95. |~||~||~||~||~| A colourful assembly of 20 Japanese colour-printed, hand-finished woodblock triptychs depicting scenes from the Sino-Japanese War, bound accordion style. In addition to being a vehicle for refined and admirable artistry, the war triptych was a vital journalistic and propagandistic medium in the Meiji era. These overtly nationalistic plates convey the heady excitement of a nascent modern military power; they undoubtedly played an important role in molding the Japanese state in the twentieth century. "The patriotic Japanese were eager for news from both the Sino-Japanese (1894-95) and the Russo-Japanese (1904-1905) war fronts, and numerous publishers commissioned artists to illustrate battles won with impressive warships and sophisticated military equipment. Unlike black and white photography that revealed the dismal reality, the woodblock prints could show dramatic scenes in which soldiers and officers fought bravely in the midst of gunfire, explosions, and searchlights, often in harsh weather conditions" (Keene, Japan at The Dawn of the Modern Age, p. 66). The subject matter of these war triptychs lends itself to a remarkable synthesis of two artistic styles: the subdued, traditional Japanese landscape, and the bold, kinetic realism of modern warfare imagery. The images are as stunning as they are varied; night scenes and day scenes, sea battles, firefights, moments of extreme violence, scenes of diplomacy, pomp and ceremony, even a fight underwater, all presented in bold, vivid colours, with some of the coloured woodblocks further highlighted with mica. One of the boards loose. All of the prints are in brilliant condition with superbly preserved colours. See: Nathan Chaïkin, The Sino-Japanese War: 1894-1895. He is still remembered for his interpretations of Bach, Beethoven and Mendelssohn and is credited with reviving the works of Giuseppe Tartini (1692-1770), the Italian composer, violinist, teacher, and theorist who composed numerous works for violin. Joachim was particularly known for his performances of Tartini's Violin Sonata in G minor, better known as the Devil's Trill Sonata because of its technical difficulty. Written on a folded sheet which has been folded once vertically. In addition to signing his full name underneath the quotation, Joachim has added "With best compliments J.J." at the top of the fourth page. Very fine and rare with a quotation from this difficult work. * All our items are sent via Federal Express. Additional postage may be requested. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Zendelings-reis naar den Stillen Oceaan, onder het bevel van James Wilson ... Met eenen brief ... door Jododus Heringa.Dordrecht, Blussé; Amsterdam, Allart, 1801-1803. 3 volumes. 8vo. With large engraved folding chart (30.5 x 44 cm) showing the route of the Duff , a large folding chart of the Fiji Islands (44.5 x 35 cm), a folding chart of the Duff Group, a map of Tahiti and 5 folding plates, engraved by Reinier Vinkeles after M.A. Rooker and William Wilson. Contemporary half calf, sprinkled sides.

Ferguson 341; Saalmink, p. 2189; cf. Hill 1894; Howgego, to 1800, W42; O'Reilly & Reitmann 674-692a. Original Dutch edition of William Wilson's account of the first English missionary voyage to the Pacific (1796-1798). The voyage was sponsored by the London Missionary Society for the purpose of establishing a mission in Tahiti. James Wilson, an ex-East India Captain and nephew of the author, was put in command of the Duff, which left the Thames in August 1796, bound for Tahiti. En route Wilson discovered the Gambier Islands, in French Polynesia. In Tahiti a small settlement was formed and befriended by the king of the island, Pomare I, but within two years many of the settlers had made themselves unpopular, and were subsequently sent off the island, fleeing to Sydney.Apart from the missionary interest, the work contains many valuable details about Tahiti, the Fiji Islands, Tongatapu, the Marquesas, and the newly discovered Duff Group. On the outward voyage, the expedition visited Rio de Janeiro, of which a short account is also included. The evocative plates include a view of Rio de Janeiro, several views of Tahiti, as well as a depiction of a cemetery in Tongatapu. Some spotting. Top of spine of second volume damaged. Very good set.
