        PIKE COUNTY PUZZLE ... VOL. I NO.1

"Camp Interlaken, Penn." 28 August 1894.. [4]pp. Folio leaflet (15" x 12 1/8" ; 38 x 31 cm). Text printed in four columns. Horizontal fold, with small break at margin at fold, slight tanning at edges and along fold faintly in excess of the uniform tan tone of the wove paper stock, faint tidemark at extreme lower corner of top sheet, otherwise an unusually nice copy of a very fragile item. One of the black tulips of Crane collecting, being his second separate publication, albeit with some likely contribution by L. C. Singer, Jr. The ...PUZZLE ... is a 4 page mock newspaper, formatted as a parody of a small town newspaper, written by Crane at an adult camp, Twin Lakes, where he spent part of the summers of 1894 and 1895. The text is based on the experiences Crane and his cohorts had while at the camp, and during their return trip. The paper was set up and printed for them by the staff of the PORT JERVIS UNION. On September 7th, THE PORT JERVIS UNION printed an appreciative notice of the PIKE COUNTY PUZZLE's appearance and content. An account of the circumstances is contained in THE CRANE LOG. Much of the content is jocular in nature, including Crane's identification of himself as "office boy," and in an advert on the last page, as "Drink Mixer." Among the other content is a "stenographic" report of "Dinner-Time Conversations": "Miss Pronk (with a sudden rush of courage). - 'Mr. Crane, dont you like the Lays of Ancient Rome? I think they are awfully sweet. Crane:- 'My uncle had a hen named Ancient Rome, once, and her eggs were popular all over the county. Yes, Miss Pronk, you are undoubtedly right....'" Personal advertisements, "Telegraphic News" from other locales, and similar tongue- in-cheek texts round out the mix. Until a clearly identified facsimile was published in 1967 by THE STEPHEN CRANE NEWSLETTER in an edition of 300 copies, including 70 on white laid paper, this original edition was the sole printing in this format. While not an absolute rarity in the strictest sense -- OCLC locates 19 copies at institutions not likely to have commingled entries for the facsimile with entries for the real thing - - it is scarce in the market place. WILLIAMS & STARRETT 43. Wertheim and Sorrentino, THE CRANE LOG, pp.109-113. BAL 4069. OCLC: 8523158 (etc).

        Pride and Prejudice (Peacock Edition)

London: George Allen, 1894. First edition thus. Near Fine. A lovely, very nearly Fine copy of the famous "peacock" edition of Pride and Prejudice, illustrated by Hugh Thomson. Book with a contemporary signature and the spine ever so slightly cocked, otherwise Fine. All gilt bright, unfaded and unrubbed. Coth without wear or tear, retaining the original publisher's sheen. A highly collectible edition, this copy is the nicest we have encountered. Austen's beloved masterpiece. "Pride and Prejudice" follows the classic relationship between the clever Elizabeth Bennett and the seemingly distant Mr. Darcy. Austen actually finished an early version of the novel, titled "First Impressions," when she was a mere 21. The book received a great deal of praise when it was released, with one well regarded critic of the day saying he "would rather have written Pride and Prejudice, or Tom Jones, than any of the Waverley Novels." The artist, Hugh Thomson, was most famous for his illustrations of Austen's work, as well as the work of Charles Dickens. Known for his attention to detail, he would often spend a great deal of time in museums researching the lifestyles and dress of the characters he was depicting, Thomson started working on his drawings for "Pride and Prejudice" in 1893. They proved an immense success, selling over 10,000 copies in the few years after they were released. He would go on to illustrate many of Austen's other novels as well. Near Fine.

SKULLYVILLE COUNTY, CHOCTAW NATION. KNOWN ALL MEN BY THESE PRESENTS: THAT, WHEREAS [T.G. OVERSTREET] A CITIZEN OF THE CHOCTAW NATION, HAS THIS DAY PETITIONED...ASKING THAT A PERMIT BE GRANTED TO [THOS. GOSSET] A CITIZEN OF THE UNITED STATES, TO REMAIN IN HIS EMPLOY IN THE CAPACITY OF A [FARMER] FOR THE YEAR 189[4]

Fort Smith, Ar.: J.H. Mayers & Co., 1894.. Broadside, 16 x 10½ inches. Horizontal folds, light spotting and ink offsetting. Very good. A very interesting partially-printed folio broadside concerning the Choctaw Nation in Oklahoma. A rather elegant "work permit" issued to one of the horde of American citizens who flocked to Oklahoma following the opening of the territory to white settlement in 1889. The epic Oklahoma Land Rush and its aftermath settled the future state but also unsettled a good many Native Americans. The need to protect Native Americans against exploitation by would-be "hired hands" or tenant farmers is self-evident. Thomas Gosset sought employment from Thomas G. Overstreet, who at this point, it would seem, could easily take care of himself. By now a prosperous rancher-farmer, Overstreet was a white man from Missouri who married Margaret Victor, of Choctaw ancestry, and came with his new bride to Indian territory in 1871. By marriage Overstreet became a citizen of the Choctaw Nation with the right to own land, which he exercised to the fullest. Overstreet acquired 3000 acres of rich Arkansas River bottomland at the foot of Short Mountain in what is todayLe Flore County, Oklahoma. Skullyville was absorbed into Le Flore County prior to Oklahoma statehood. In 1890, he began work on an elegant 15-room residence which was occupied by his descendants until the 1970s and is today the landmark Overstreet-Kerr Historical Farm. Overstreet contributed to the advancement of regional agriculture and for a time served as president of the first national bank of Warner, Indian Territory. His descendants continued to play a prominent role in the life of the community. ^Skullyville, Oklahoma lies fifteen miles west of Fort Smith, Arkansas. It was settled by the Choctaws in 1832 when they were removed from their homelands. Given that the Choctaw were amongst the first Native American tribes to arrive in the territory, Skullyville was one of the first organized communities in Oklahoma, and served as the first capital of the Choctaw Nation. Today, Skullyville is a ghost town, with only the cemetery remaining. J.H. Mayers, the printer who occasionally worked for the Choctaw Nation, was successor to W.H. Mayers, publisher of the THIRTY- FIFTH PARALLEL, a Fort Smith newspaper published between 1859 and 1861. A rare Native American broadside from Indian Territory, printed over a decade before Oklahoma statehood was granted. No copies in OCLC.

Text illustrations. Paris: C. Reinwald, 1894. 218 x 135 mm. Quarter cloth, mottled boards ca. 1894, moderate wear to edges and extremities, inner hinges cracking. Light toning but very good. Bookplate of neurobiologist Marcus Jacobson (1930-2001). First Edition in French. In 1890 and 1891?"an enormously fruitful period that he referred to as his ?Palm Sunday??"Ramon y Cajal embarked on a series of histological investigations in which he clarified the nature of nerve cell development in the embryo, confirmed the correctness of the neuron theory (i.e., that the nervous system consists of discrete units rather than an interconnected web), established that the nerve impulse is always transmitted from the dendrites to the cell body to the axon (a principle he called ?dynamic polarization?), and clarified a number of important details on the structure of the cerebrum. He published these results in 1892 in a series of papers in the Revista de ciencias médicas de Catalu?a; these were immediately translated into both German and French. The French translation was the work of Léon Azoulay, his friend and official French translator; ?it created a sensation and two editions were exhausted in three months? (Cannon, p. 152). The success of Les nouvelles idées inspired Ramon y Cajal to collect in one work the results of all his researches on the structure of the vertebrate nervous system, which he published as his classic Textura del sistemo nervioso del hombre y de los vertebrados (1894-1904). In 1906 he shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Camillo Golgi for his contributions to our knowledge of the structure of the nervous system.         At Sundown

Boston: Houghton Mifflin and Company, 1894. First Thus. 12mo. Sumptuously bound by by J.F. Grabau (and John Bunce) at the Garret Bindery in 1905, with a full page illuminated presentation on first free endsheet. Exquisitely tooled full dark green crushed morocco with petal and strapwork design on both covers, carried over onto large dentelles, silk moire doublures and endsheets. Binder's gilt pallet rear dentelle, "Bunce & Grabau." John F. Grabau was one of the most noted designer binders for the Roycroft Bindery from 1902-1905, after which he formed The Derome Art Bindery, and then Garret Bindery with John Bunce up until 1905, producing quality bindings from their store in Buffalo, NY. It is likely the present binding was executed in private association, as the intimate and beautifuly illuminated full-page presentaton from Grabau and his wife indicates. Grabau was celebrated as a master bookbinder in his day, as evidenced by his comment in a newspaper article: "Few things have given me the personal joy that was mine when Bishop Wiilliam Turner advised me that the book of testimonials I had bound for His Holiness, the Pope, had brought from the pontiff the statement it was one of the finest things that ever had come into the vatican."
