        An American Memorial to Keats

Kelmscott Press, (Hammersmith 1894 - Single bifolium leaf folded to make (4)pp. Printed on recto of first page only. This is the program for the 16 July 1894 unveiling of the Keats memorial at the Parish Church in Hampstead, which was printed by the Kelmscott Press. The item being unveiled was the bust of Keats by American sculptor Anne Whitney, which was commissioned by Charles Eliot Norton, and other American literary luminaries. According to the program, the memorial was the first on English soil. There was an earlier version of this pamphlet that stated Bret Harte would represent the nearly 100 donors in presenting the memorial, and that Dr. Alexander Mackenzie would perform on the organ; when Mackenzie cancelled and it was unclear whether Harte could attend, Morris reworked the pamphlet to say that "it is hoped" Harte would be present, and that selections from Mackenzie's "La Belle Dame Sans Merci" symphony would be performed. Printed in Golden type with a ten- and a six-line decorated initial by Morris. The pamphlet is accompanied by the invitation card, also printed at Kelmscott, which contains a six-line initial and is printed in Golden type as well. Peterson notes that Morris generally "disliked job printing," and so ephemeral items not directly related to the output of the press are quite rare. Apart from a tiny spot on the printed part of the program, and light adhesive residue on the very back page, this is a fine example of a fugitive piece of Kelmscott ephemera. Housed in a cloth chemise. (Peterson D4). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Burne-Jones coat of arms bookplate design

1894 - Two designs for Sir Edward Burne-Jones's coat-of-arms bookplate. The first design is done in pencil, with various studies sketched in the margins; pencil notes on the recto and verso by Robert Catterson-Smith, signed and dated 30 December 1927, explain that the design was intended for Catterson-Smith to translate into an ink line drawing. The second sheet features the same design in a rough pen and ink wash. Burne-Jones was offered a Baronetcy in November 1893 on the recommendation of Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone. The title was formalized on May 3, 1894, after which Burne-Jones took the necessary steps of creating a family crest and motto. This bookplate shows an early try at creating that heraldry. In the sketch, the crest is made up of two wings against stylized fire and an estoile, a star with six wavy rays, in the center. Below, the coat of arms has a diagonal band with three sets of wings over a field spangled with seven estoiles and a hand, which represents the baronetcy. A curling banner shows the family motto, also chosen by Burne-Jones, "sequar et attingam," which means "I will follow and attain." The set likely shows an attempt at actually designing the coat of arms, rather than simply transferring the finished design onto a bookplate, as there are several key differences between the sketches and the final, formalized heraldry. In the official design, the hand is absent, and the wavy-legged estoiles are simple straight-legged mullets. Also, the helmet sketches in the margins suggest that Burne-Jones was considering other ideas for the crest before he settled on the wings and fire. This set offers an interesting glimpse into the process of an artist becoming a peer. Light soiling to both pages, and some spotting to the pencil design. (Memorials of Edward Burne-Jones, p. 241; The Art of Heraldry, p. 70; Fairbairn's book of crests of the families of Great Britain and Ireland, p. 309). [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Beyond the Ice. Being a story of the newly discovered region round the north pole. Edited from Dr. Frank Farleigh's diary.

      - London, Sampson Low & Melbourne, Hutchinson [1894]. Octavo publisher's illustrated blue cloth (two small blobs of wax on the front cover, marks on the back). Somewhat canted, not a bad copy of a book guaranteed to respond badly to handling. A signed presentation, dated March 1894, from Murphy to Geelong lawyer Aurel Just, "gentleman, Dremanist and possessor of other titles," with a quote from his character Vernon Dreman. Only edition of this polar utopia and dystopia which Murphy - I suspect simple perversity - took to the opposite end of the world in defiance of the usual Australian practice of heading south. Heaps of scientific advances and flying machines as expected but reform and enlightened progress can only go so far: adult women are enfranchised until they marry, then the possible conflict between husband and wife is not worth the candle. "The chief characters seem to spend a deal of unnecessary time in consuming oysters and brown bread" warned the North Melbourne Courier and West Melbourne Advertiser in an otherwise warm review while suggesting it would be commercially more canny to set the book in central Australia.

        Le Morte D'Arthur

London: J. M. Dent, 1894. First edition thus. One of just 300 copies of the superior issue on Dutch hand-made paper, complete in three volumes. Bound in early three quarter black morocco over marbled boards. Five raised bands on the spines, gilt top-edges, marbled end-papers; bindings handsome and in excellent condition. Light to moderate foxing on the first and last couple pages, Beardsley plates toned (as usual), several leaves unopened. Malory translated and compiled the legends of Arthur, Merlin, Lancelot, Guinevere, Sir Gawain, and the Knights of the Round Table, using numerous French and English sources. His work was first published in 1485 by William Caxton, the first English printer. It proved immensely popular and became the basis for the countless retellings and adaptations throughout the next five centuries (with a few periods of silence, namely 1634 - 1816). We can think of no other collection of stories that have more fully captured the imagination and passion of the English people than the Arthurian legends. "It is the only true English epic; its matter is 'the Matter of England'. The matchless style, the humour, the magnificence, the magic that takes away the breath, combine in a masterpiece of legendary narrative. Each century has produced its own version of the Arthurian tapestry, but Malory's will never be forgotten." (Printing and the Mind of Man, 29).

Lithographs]: Five Currier and Ives Lithographs of Four Prominent African-Americans and a Portrait of "The First Colored Senator and Representatives"

Currier & Ives, New York 1894 - Five separate lithographs. Small folios. Each measuring 13.5" x 17.75" (untrimmed). Two produced at the Currier & Ives studios at 125 Nassau Street, which they occupied from 1872-1874 (Douglass and Brown); the other three at 115 Nassau Street, where the business operated from 1877-1894. All five lithographs are very good, strong images, with just a few stray scuff marks to the blank background and faint shadowing from an old mat, on the portrait of William Wells Brown.Following the Civil War, American print companies looking for new commercial avenues were intent on marketing to all factions of the Reconstruction economy. *Harper's Weekly*, Louis Prang, Currier & Ives, and others, produced images sympathetic to both white and black Southerners, and to white and black Northerners. Positive print images of African-Americans elicited an enthusiastic response from Frederick Douglass, commenting on an image of H.R. Revels done by Prang he wrote: "Heretofore, colored Americans have thought little of adorning their parlors with pictures. They have had to do with the stern, and I may say, the ugly realities of life. Every colored householder in the land should have one of these portraits in his parlor, and should explain it to his children, as the dividing line between the darkness and despair that overhung our past, and the light and hope that now beams upon our future as people."One of the more well-known groups of images produced by Currier & Ives in this period was the "Darktown Series" of stereotypical comic depictions of African-Americans. The group of images here are in stark contrast to that series, and are dignified works of a fine quality, respectfully done. Depicted are individual images of Douglass, author of the famed slave narrative and leader of the American Abolitionist Movement; William Wells Brown, an escaped slave who authored both the first play and first novel by an African-American; Rev. Richard Allen, the founder of the African Methodist Episcopal Church; George Washington Williams, the first African-American elected to the Ohio State Legislature and the author of the first book on the history of African-Americans in the Civil War; and one group shot of "The First Colored Senator and Representatives" comprised of: H.R. Revels, an AME minister who became the first seated African-American Senator; Joseph H. Rainey, the first African-American to serves in the House of Representatives and the second to serve as U.S. Senator; Jefferson H. Long, Georgia's first African-American Representative; Benj. S. Turner, Alabama's first African-American Representative; Josiah T. Walls, Florida's first African-American Representative; Robert C. De Large, South Carolina's first Representative; and R. Brown Elliott, South Carolina's second Representative.*OCLC* locates no copies of these images except for a smaller version of the group portrait, almost certainly trimmed as was the custom when framed, at three locations: Library of Congress, Harvard, and Library of Michigan; and we have additionally located a fourth copy of that individual print at the New York Public Library.

        Spring - Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema.

SPRINGHeliogravure vervaardigd in 1894 door de Berlin Photographic Co. naar het schilderij (Opus CLXXV) van Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema. Later met de hand gekleurd. H x B: 89 x 39,5 cm. In originele lijst. In a land of clear colours and stories,In a region of shadowless hours,Where the earth has a garment of glories,And a murmur of musical flowers.
