Ocherk piatidesiatiletnei deiatel’nosti Elisavetinskoi Klinicheskoi Bol’nitsy dlia Maloletnikh Detei [An overview of fifty years of activity of the Princess Elizabeth Clinical Hospital for Small Children], 1844-1894.

St. Petersburg: Tiporafiia Eduarda Goppe 1894 - Large octavo (25 × 19 cm). Recent full leather binding, preserving most of the original presentation binding: the gilt-stamped leather boards, most of the spine, as well as the decorative endpapers; 224 pp. Numerous graphs and charts in the text. Very good, professional repairs to a few corners A lavishly produced and very detailed report issued on the fifty-year anniversary of the first Russian hospital for infants and children under the age of three. In 1918, the hospital was renamed the Louis Pasteur Children’s Hospital. The Elizabeth Hospital for Infants was founded on April 21, 1844 at the behest of Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna, two of whose daughters had died as infants. It was governed by a charitable organization consisting of members of Russian nobility; among the leading doctors were Martin Mandt (1800-1858), K. A. Tillmann and E. Meier. Other members of the staff included Friedrich Karlovitch Arnheim (1845-1893), Talberg, M. L. Abel’man, the surgeon E. E. Anders, Nikolai I. Lunin (1854-1937), and the female doctor A. I. Ekkert, most of which conducted and published research findings while working at the hospital. The report describes the hos- pital’s early development, as well as its buildings and facilities. It contains details about funding and expenses, exhaustive statistics about the hospital’s work, de- scriptions of the various medical departments (such as ambulant care, therapeutic care, surgery and infectious diseases). A special section is devoted to the reasons for the high mortality rate in cases of tuberculosis. The authors give an overview of the dangers of various digestive, respiratory, and infectious ailments, and possible measures against them. Illustrated throughout with reproductions of hand-drawn charts and graphs, as well as countless tables. A tremendous source of information on the development of Russian pediatric care and medical research. The gilt-stamped original leather binding and superior paper quality suggest this was a presentation copy for a donor from the upper nobility, a high-ranking member of the government, or a member of the Russian Imperial family. The print run would have been small, as such reports were not available for sale to the public. Not in KVK or OCLC. Not found at the Russian State or National Library. The only known copy is held by the Omsk State Medical Academy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes

George Newnes, 1894. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good. The book shows wear but still displays handsomely considering its age. The boards are marked, edge-worn and somewhat faded. The spine and the gilt lettering on it has faded somewhat. The spine is also frayed at the top and bottom. Internally the front end, and back end pages have both been removed. The pages have darkened somewhat and appear to have suffered very slight damp damage. There is also slight foxing sporadically throughout the book. Some of the top-right hand pages have crease marks from being folded. The text is nonetheless very well preserved. the condition is given in terms of the book's age.

Pèlerinage à la Mecque et à la Médine.

Cairo: Imprimerie Nationale,, 1894. Précédé d'un aperçu sur l'Islamisme et suivi de considérations générales au point de vue sanitaire et d'un appendice sur la circoncision. Octavo (225 × 150 mm). Black crocodile-skin-textured paper sides, red-brown cloth backstrip, black morocco label lettered in gilt to spine. Photographic frontispiece and finispiece, 17 plates after the photographs of Muhammad Sadiq Bey and al-Sayyid 'Abd al-Ghaffar al-Baghdadi. Extremities lightly rubbed with small area of wear to corner of front board, contents toned, half-title missing, old tape-repair to verso of contents page. Altogether a more than presentable copy of an uncommon publication. First and only edition. Saleh Soubhi was an Egyptian public health official commissioned by Khedive 'Abbas II to write a report on the conditions experienced by pilgrims to Mecca. He performed the Hajj twice, in 1888 and 1891, producing this detailed account, to which are affixed a response to European criticisms of Islam and an appendix making several suggestions with regard to improving hygiene practices en route. The Pèlerinage notably collects the work of the first two men to photograph the holy cities of Arabia. Muhammad Sadiq Bey was a military engineer who had performed the Hajj several times as treasurer of the Egyptian mahmal, or official caravan. His photographs of Mecca and Medina, the first ever, appeared in his work Mash'al al-Mahmal ("The Torch of the Mahmal"), published in Cairo in 1881 and now with only two copies extant in libraries worldwide (NY Public Library and the National Library of Morocco). 'Abd al-Ghaffar was a medical doctor and the first Arab photographer of Mecca. He had been taught the craft by Dutch orientalist Snouck Hurgronje, and his images were first published in Hurgronje's extremely uncommon volume Bilder aus Mekka (1889). Scarce.

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE With a preface by George Saintsbury

George Allen. London. 1894. FIRST THOMSON EDITION. 8vo. (7.3 x 4.9 inches). Beautifully illustrated throughout with 101 fine line engravings by Thomson. Previous owners bookplate to front pastedown endpaper. Neat, and early but undated, four line presentation inscription on the half title page. About 12 leaves, and the front endpapers are affected by some dark ink to the outer edge of the pages, but it only reaches the text block on two pages and the others are only small areas of staining. When the book is closed the fore edge gilt is still bright and fresh but when the pages are fanned the ink stain is visible although it doesn't actually encroach onto most pages. Inner front hinge firm and solid but rear hinge cracked, although still very firm. Aside from the staining this is a very clean and bright copy of the scarce first Thomson edition in publishers highly decorative peacock design binding. Dark green cloth with gilt lettering and decoration to front board and spine. Dark green coated endpapers. All edges gilt. -------- One of the best, and most popular, illustrated books of the late nineteenth century. Thomson illustrated this work for George Allen publishers before going on to illustrate the other Austen books for Macmillan & Co. This is the scarcest of all the Thomson/Austen titles in first edition. ---- More photos avaialable on request.

Ulozhenie Tumura [The Code of Timur].

Kazan: The University Press,, 1894. Octavo (251 × 158 mm). contemporary black pebble-grained paper-covered boards, blind single fillet panel to the boards, spine unlettered, pale green endpapers. A little rubbed, particularly at the extremities, spine creased, corners bumped, small hole to the title page, no loss of text, some browning throughout, heavier to the front and rear, but overall very good. First edition of the first translation into Russian of the legal code of Timur, provided with a scholarly commentary by Ostroumov. Extremely uncommon, just the BL copy on Copac, no copies recorded on OCLC. Nikolai Ostroumov (1836-1930) "arrived in Tashkent in 1877 to take up the post of director of schools in the newly created province of Turkestan. He had been recommended to the Governor General Konstantin Petrovich von Kaufman by Nikolai Ivanovich Il'minskii, the famous Kazan' missionary and Orientalist, whose student Ostroumov had been. Ostroumov had trained in Islam and Turkic languages, and this knowledge very quickly made him a confidant of Kaufman. Ostroumov retained this proximity to power all through the tsarist period. Until 1917, Ostroumov served the state in various capacities. In 1883, he was appointed the editor of the Turkiston viloyatining gazeti, the vernacular official gazette, through which he sought to shape the contours of local cultural debates in the direction of Russian state interests. He acted as a censor for local-language publications, and his opinion on "native" affairs was routinely sought by local administrators. At the same time, he produced a vast corpus of scholarly writing on the ethnography and history of Central Asia, and on Islam. Ostroumov translated the Bible into Chaghatay and wrote anti-Islamic polemics in Russian. His private papers include correspondence with fellow Orientalists in Russia and abroad, and his writings give ample evidence of his involvement in the international enterprise of Orientalism" (Khalid, "Russian History and the Debate over Orientalism" in Kritika, I, 4, Fall 2000, p.691).

      - 1 page. Large quarto. No place or date, but April 3, 1894. Written in black ink.Headed "Hugo Wolf Liederabend" followed by: "unter gefälliger Mitwirkung der Frl. Frieda Zerny Opernsängerin aus Mainz des Herren Ferd. Jäger, Opernsänger u[nd] des Herren Hugo Faisst Conzertsänger. Klavierbegleitung: der Componist" (Recital of lieder with the friendly participation of Fräulein Frieda Zerny, opera singer from Mainz; Herr Ferdinand Jäger, opera singer; and Herr Hugo Faisst, concert singer. Piano accompaniment by the composer).Seven sets of 3 to 5 songs (28 songs in total), all by Wolf, sets numbered "7," "2-6," and "1." Set "7" originally was set "1"; the final set "1" was added last. Each set to be performed by one singer each. Poets credited except in set 6; singers credited in sets 7, 2, 3, and 4 only. With a number of autograph corrections in black ink and corrections in a different hand in pencil.Slightly browned and stained; creased at folds with very minor splits. The document was on display at the 1960 Wolf centennial exhibition in Vienna and Graz. See Hugo Wolf: Persönlichkeit und Werk: Eine Ausstellung zum 100. Geburtstag. Catalogue by Franz Grasberger (Vienna: Österreichische Nationalbibliothek, 1960), p. 64 (item X/5); it was then in the possession of Hilde Wittgenstein, wife of the pianist Paul Wittgenstein. A printed version of the same program, with some changes, at Österreichische Nationalbibliothek; another printed version including sung texts at Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde, Vienna. HWW 114|1.Featured singers included Frieda Zerny (1864-1917), soprano; Ferdinand Jäger (1839-1902), tenor; and Hugo Faisst (1862-1914), baritone, a practicing lawyer from Stuttgart."On 3rd April Frl. Zerny, Faisst, Jäger and Wolf gave a concert in the Bösendorfersaal. This was actually the first concert wholly devoted to Wolf's songs to be given in Vienna. According to the composer himself, its success was a downright sensational one. Frl. Zerny's temperament found perfect opportunities for expression in such songs as Die Zigeunerin; Erstes Liebeslied eines Mädchens; Geh', Geliebter, geh' jetzt! and Das Köhlerweib ist trunken. Nearly half of the songs on the programme had to be repeated." Frank Walker, Hugo Wolf, 2nd edition (London: Dent, 1968), p. 356. Das Köhlerweib ist trunken does not appear on the present draft of the program.

        An American Memorial to Keats

(Hammersmith: Kelmscott Press, 1894. Single bifolium leaf folded to make (4)pp. Printed on recto of first page only. This is the program for the 16 July 1894 unveiling of the Keats memorial at the Parish Church in Hampstead, which was printed by the Kelmscott Press. The item being unveiled was the bust of Keats by American sculptor Anne Whitney, which was commissioned by Charles Eliot Norton, and other American literary luminaries. According to the program, the memorial was the first on English soil. There was an earlier version of this pamphlet that stated Bret Harte would represent the nearly 100 donors in presenting the memorial, and that Dr. Alexander Mackenzie would perform on the organ; when Mackenzie cancelled and it was unclear whether Harte could attend, Morris reworked the pamphlet to say that "it is hoped" Harte would be present, and that selections from Mackenzie's "La Belle Dame Sans Merci" symphony would be performed. Printed in Golden type with a ten- and a six-line decorated initial by Morris. The pamphlet is accompanied by the invitation card, also printed at Kelmscott, which contains a six-line initial and is printed in Golden type as well. Peterson notes that Morris generally "disliked job printing," and so ephemeral items not directly related to the output of the press are quite rare. Apart from a tiny spot on the printed part of the program, and light adhesive residue on the very back page, this is a fine example of a fugitive piece of Kelmscott ephemera. Housed in a cloth chemise. (Peterson D4).
