        THE JUNGLE BOOK

1894. Kipling, J. Lockwood. Decorated by J. Lockwood Kipling, C.I.E. New York: The Century Co., 1894. Original olive green cloth decorated in gilt. First American Edition, published in the same year as the English edition. Many of the illustrations are by John Lockwood Kipling, Rudyard's father. This book and THE SECOND JUNGLE BOOK, along with JUST SO STORIES, constitute Kipling's best-loved work:~For there is a unique magic in the JUNGLE BOOKs from the moment the infant Mowgli enters the wolf's lair, and the moonlight is blacked out at the mouth of the cave by the great head of the tiger Shere Khan, and his roar fills it with thunder. There is magic too in the jungle, so glowingly portrayed, with its danger-haunted thickets, and the monkeys threading its frail liana ways, the enchanted land of which Mowgli is to become the master; and in the animals who are his friends and mentors -- Bagheera, the sleek and terrible panther; Baloo, the wise old bear; Hathi, the elephant; Kaa, the gigantic python who makes a nest for Mowgli in his coils; Akela, the leader of the wolf-pack; and the bandarlog, chattering outcasts of the tree tops, whose only wish is to be noticed, and who immediately abandon every task they have begun. [Birkenhead]~This volume is in near-fine condition (one small droplet-mark on the rear cover, occasional light foxing). Richards A77; Stewart 124.

Dessins inédits de Viollet-le-Duc [Complete three volume set w/ 327 plates] publiés sous le patronage de l’Administration des beaux-arts par les soins de A. de Baudot, J. Roussel

Armand Guérinet, Paris 1894 - 138; 130; 59 plates pages; Complete set of the three series -- undated, but circa 1894-1902 -- OCLC: 6595933. These three large portfolios contain reproductions of drawings by Eugène Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc (1814 – 1879), a major French architect and theorist. Born in Paris, he embraced rebellion as a youth, and is said to have built a barricade in the Revolution of 1830. And, although he was drawn to architecture early, he refused to enter the École des Beaux-Arts, thinking it stuffy and his attendence would entail years of uninspiring rote work and copying. So he apprenticed in the architectural offices of Jacques-Marie Huvé and Achille-François-René Leclère. After studies in Italy, Viollet-le-Duc was commissioned to undertake the first of a series of restorations of medieval buildings, when Prosper Mérimée entrusted the young architect with the commission to restore the Romanesque abbey at Vézelay. This led to a series of important similar commissions to restore the glorious architectural past of France, including Mont Saint-Michel, Carcassonne, Roquetaillade, and, of course, the work that would become one of the signatures of his career and his time -- Notre Dame de Paris, for which Viollet-le-Duc became famous all over Europe. His understanding of the scope and nature of "restoration" is not entirely consistent with modern thinking. On one hand, Viollet-le-Duc had a thorough knowledge of period detail, as many of these drawings demonstrate. He knew what the Gothic and Romanesque builders knew and understood the materials available to them and their properties profoundly. But his position was represented by a key passage in his influential 10 volume 'Dictionnaire Raisonné de L'Architecture Française du XIe au XVIe siècle' -- "Restaurer un édifice, ce n'est pas l'entretenir, le reparer ou le refaire, c'est le rétablir dans un état complet qui ne peut avoir jamais existé à un moment donné". [Restoration, goes beyond maintenance, repair and rebuilding, but may bring a building to a finished state, which may in fact never have actually existed at any given time]. In the case of Notre Dame, the application of Viollet-le-Duc's principles of restoration led to something which went well beyond fixing up and cleaning; his "updated" led to the addition of the great cathedral's distinctive third tower, and added many of the fabulous grotesques which enhance the facade. These grotesques grew out of the vast number of notes and drawings, which Viollet-le-Duc made throughout his life -- not only for the buildings he was working on, but also on Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance buildings that were soon to be demolished. The drawings were a source for his great 'Dictionnaire raisonné de l'architecture française .' and for other books and his high-profile restoration work. But they are also a fine resource in themselves and a window into the developed eye and culture of an epochal figure in architecture. Sir John Summerson wrote in 1948 that "there have been two supremely eminent theorists in the history of European architecture - Leon Battista Alberti and Eugène Viollet-le-Duc." These three portfolios were published by Armand Guérinet, a leading publisher of architectural books in Paris. They are undated, but most instutions assign a range of dates from about 1896 for the first, to 1902 for the final, third series. I: The first series has a note at head of title: "Archives de la Commission des monuments historiques, Musee de sculpture comparee, Bibliotheque." There is an internal title page, four leaves of notes and a list of plates, and two series of plates; A1-A99 [plates A1-A45 depict details of Notre Dame] ; and 100-138. The final twenty plates in the second group are photographs mostly by Aron, of various buildings restored by Viollet-le-Duc; most depict Notre Dame de Paris. II: Is denoted on the title page: "Ensembles." Title page, list of plates and 130 plates. Many of these are larger than the sheets full of smaller detail drawin [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Materials for the Study of Variation treated with Especial Regard to Discontinuity in the Origin of Species

Macmillan, London 1894 - Octavo, xvi, 598, [2] (publisher's advertisements) pages with 209 line illustrations. Cloth slightly rubbed, marked and bumped at the extremities; edges a little foxed and tanned; occasional light foxing (confined mainly to the top margins); trifling signs of handling; a very good copy, uncut and partially unopened. William Bateson (1861-1926), the English biologist who founded and named the science of genetics and whose experiments provided evidence basic to the modern understanding of heredity. In 1900 he translated Mendel's seminal paper into English and became his champion in England, corroborating his principles experimentally. Unfortunately, he misinterpreted some of his results, leading him to refuse 'to accept the interpretation of linkage advanced by the geneticist Thomas Hunt Morgan. In fact, he opposed Morgan's entire chromosome theory, advocating his own vibratory theory of inheritance, founded on laws of force and motion, a concept that found little acceptance among other scientists' (Encyclopaedia Britannica online).         Signed Cabinet Photograph - dated during "a quite wonderful intermezzo of the loveliest of snow landscapes in the middle of summer"

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Cabinet photograph, signed by the German romantic composer and pianist. Sepia-tone, a three-quarters portrait of the famous composer shown seated on a rustic wooden bench in this 1894 photograph by Rudolf Krziwanek, signed in the upper blank area of the image in dark brown ink, "Johannes Brahms / 25/5 95."  10.5 x 15 cm [4.2 x 5.8 inches]. The lower mount trimmed, archivally matted and set under UV plexiglass in a period red crushed velvet frame. Overall in fine condition.<br style="">The composer has inscribed while summering in Bad Ischl in 1895, a year which would be the first since 1872 that he did not release any compositions.  "The lure of Bad Ischl for Brahms was the rather paradoxical combination of the company that he found there and the seclusion that the remote mountain town provided.  The atmosphere of the spa provided the sociability that his melancholy and lonely personality craved as well as the prospect of romantic dalliances.  Although he did not share Strauss's enthusiasm for the sometimes incessant rain and storms, he came to accept the weather and even reveled in a heavy snowfall at the end of May 1895: 'the quite wonderful intermezzo of the loveliest of snow landscapes in the middle of summer.'"  (Ian C. Bradley, "Water Music," p. 138)<br>The letter quoted here was penned to his friend Eusebius Mandyczewski, Romanian musicologist, composer, conductor, on the day following the present example of the composer's signature.  Brahms - though an autograph collector himself - disliked the notion of his signature being collected. He rarely signed photographs (and if so, usually on the verso), signed many letters with his initials only, and the present fully signed example is a rarity indeed.
